Welcome to The Mikado, the most translated opera ever!In addition to an evening of great fun, our production of The Mikado showcases a winning combination of talent, featuring accomplished international opera stars along with some local Kansas City talent. This dynamic mixture is one we will continue to see next season as well.

In our production of The Mikado, two of the most colorful roles, Katisha and The Mikado, are performed by two immensely talented and highly esteemed singers, each with distinguished national and international careers. We welcome Denyce Graves (Katisha) and Dale Travis (The Mikado) to our stage. Adding to this talent, we bring Robert Gibby Brand, a jewel of the Kansas City community, performing the role of Ko-Ko. Other visiting guest artists reflect Lyric Opera of Kansas City’s commitment to providing opportunities for young artists with ascending careers. Next, we liberally add a nice representation of Lyric Opera Apprentice Program artists, Chris Carr, Etta Fung and Elizabeth Tredent in our production. The final cast ingredient is our own remarkable chorus, conducted by our renowned chorus master, Mark Ferrell, who conducts this show as well. All of these elements are stirred by our superb artistic director, Ward Holmquist.

As we move forward and continue to grow, this winning talent formula will continue – a combination of the finest singers available working with our own best of the best.

Next season’s casting will illustrate this as well with a dazzling array of artists. Each production features a blend of artists at the zenith of their careers, young talent on the rise, and the finest Kansas City has to offer. What a wonderful opportunity for artistic discourse. Spring Break and Summer Opera CampSThere are no ghostly tales shared around the campfire, but oh, the stories they will tell after Lyric Opera Camp!

Nine through eighteen-year-olds are invited to attend these fun, music-filled day camps. Daily schedules include singing and movement, dramatizing and listening to music from upcoming main stage operas, and visits from Lyric Opera artistic staff and singers. Professionals from the Lyric Opera teach children in elementary grades how to work together to stage a successful production. Singing, acting, and creating costumes and sets are all part of the fun! Participating schools may choose one of two operas: Born To Freedom, a story of young people discovering and paying tribute to the contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. or Never Lost A Passenger, the story of Harriet Tubman and the underground railroad.

GinGer Frost HiGH scHool Honors ArtistsYoung singers receive voice lessons, master classes, and scholarships.

Lyric Opera provides opera instruction for high school students chosen to audition by their vocal music teachers. These gifted students receive training in Italian, German, French, and English diction, singing technique, acting, audition preparation and stage etiquette.

lyric operA expressElementary school students sing and act in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ Spelling Bee.

Participating classrooms are visited by professional singers who help the students prepare for their opera debuts. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ Spelling Bee is an adaptation by Joseph and Paula Winans, with music by Mozart, Bizet, Rossini, Verdi, and Gilbert & Sullivan. Simple costumes are created, and the class of new opera stars and four Lyric Opera Express performers take the stage to perform for the rest of the school. Teachers, assisted by Lyric Opera educators, design their own package for their students based upon the production areas they want them to learn. Choose from an array of opera singers, make-up artists, scenic designers and wig specialists to visit a school. Depending upon the workshop design, students can become familiar with the sound of trained opera singers’ voices, learn about voice production with a group mini-voice lesson, experience a make-up or wig demonstration, and learn about scenic and costume design, careers in opera, and audience etiquette. The ebullient, new setting of The Mikado you see before you represents an important part of the Lyric’s mission – to create new physical productions that will captivate, thrill and engage you. The dynamic forces that gave rise to the great edifice in which you now comfortably sit also flow through us, emboldening us to strive for equally great and moving new stagings, sets and costumes.

We hope that the variegated, witty new R. Keith Brumley set and William Theisen’s acclaimed comedic direction will bring this masterwork of pithy rhyme and genial melody to audiences old and new, in the great tradition of its original presentation.

Our opening, new production of next season, The Capulets and the Montagues, by the Italian romantic composer Vincenzo Bellini, has never been presented in Kansas City. Our dramatic concept will introduce you to the expanded boundaries of contemporary, operatic presentation. The theme of forbidden love attempting to bridge the chasm of interfamily enmity remains as current today as ever, and we seek to show that the operatic art form can reflect and provide a viewpoint of contemporary conditions on the operatic stage.

Our second new production next season, Die Fledermaus, will present the glories of old Vienna in all its traditional, opulent elegance. Although my year as a young music student in Vienna did not include participation in the venerated social ritual of Ball season, I came to love the glorious waltzes and other dance pieces that form its backbone, and I deeply admire that incomparable music’s most famous creator, Johann Strauss, Jr.

Opera remains for us a living, breathing life form, enjoyed and appreciated by a broad cross section of people. We share your enthusiasm for what it has been, is, and can be in the future, and we want you to join us as we follow our mission to present the best work to you, our beloved audience.

Every time I prepare to direct one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s operettas, I find it fascinating to look back and see what was happening at the time they were actually creating the piece. The circumstances surrounding The Mikado are especially interesting.

Immediately following the opening of their latest work, Princess Ida on January 5, 1884, Gilbert and Sullivan were barely speaking to each other. In fact, Mr. Sullivan decided that he would no longer compose music for comic operas. After all, just a few months earlier, Her Majesty the Queen of England had honored Sullivan by making him a Knight, “in recognition of his distinguished talents as a composer.” Many of his friends and colleagues felt that “Sir” Arthur must now apply his gifts to a serious opera on some subject of abiding human or natural interest.

However, Sullivan had forgotten about the five year contract he and Gilbert had signed with D’Oyly Carte, and if they didn’t write a new opera, they could be liable for any losses that might result from their default. Gilbert offered numerous possibilities for the plot of their next collaboration but Sullivan dismissed them all.

One afternoon, as Gilbert was angrily pacing his library, a heavy object hanging on the wall suddenly clattered to the floor. Gilbert bent down to pick it up – it was a Japanese sword – and as held it in his hand the idea came to him. In Knightsbridge, which was a wide street running along the south edge of Hyde Park in London near Buckingham Palace, there was a Japanese Exposition, complete with exhibitions of costumes, pottery, paintings, Geisha girls serving tea and Japanese businessmen. London had gone Oriental; Japanese fans whirred here and there, and vases of Nippon dominated many a British mantelpiece. London’s unreserved adoration for everything from that exotic land struck Gilbert’s sense of the absurd. Sullivan was so delighted with the idea of a perfectly real Japanese world that he immediately agreed to collaborate. The declaration against another comic opera was completely forgotten.

The Mikado, which opened on March 14, 1885, proved to be the most popular of all the Gilbert and Sullivan operas, running 672 consecutive performances, a record that was not to be broken for thirty-five years. One of the first-night critics enthused, “It is the greatest triumph of light opera, foreign or British, that has ever been presented.”

In preparation for this production that critic’s quote kept coming back to me. Certainly I wanted some of the tradition of the original The Mikado, but what twist could be

The Mikado: The sToryAct I – Nanki-Poo, the son of the emperor of Japan, is in love with Yum-Yum, the ward of a former tailor named Ko-Ko, to whom she has been betrothed. When Nanki-Poo learns that Ko-Ko is sentenced to death for the crime of flirting, he flees the court disguised as a wandering minstrel. He arrives in Titipu, and inquires from the gentlemen of the town the whereabouts of Yum-Yum. He soon learns from the noble Lord Pish-Tush that Ko-Ko has been appointed to the post of Lord High Executioner, on the principle that he cannot execute any man before decapitating himself. Pooh-Bah, the Lord High Everything Else, demands a small fee to inform Nanki-Poo that Yum-Yum is returning from school to wed Ko-Ko that day.

Ko-Ko arrives and reveals his “little list” of people who would not be missed if executed. He tries to discuss the cost of his impending wedding with Pooh-Bah, who will not advise him because of various conflicts of interest. Yum-Yum appears with her schoolgirl friends, Pitti-Sing and Peep-Bo, and is greeted warmly by Ko-Ko. However, she is more interested in Nanki-Poo, who arrives to reveal his love for her to Ko-Ko. Nanki-Poo is led away, but as all depart, he finds himself alone with his beloved. He reveals himself as son and heir of the Mikado, and explains how he has fled the court to avoid marrying the elderly Katisha, who mistakes his courtesy for adoration. As he begins to flirt with Yum-Yum, the two lament their situation.

Meanwhile, the Mikado has decreed that an execution must take place within a month, or the town will be reduced to the rank of village. Pish-Tush and Pooh-Bah suggest Ko-Ko as the obvious choice for beheading; however, Ko-Ko rejects the idea for its danger and difficulty. He then discovers that, in despair, Nanki-Poo has resolved to commit suicide. The two strike an agreement that Nanki-Poo will marry Yum-Yum, and after one month he will be publicly executed. After this, Ko-Ko will be free to marry the widowed Yum-Yum.

And then it struck me… traditional Japanese Kabuki theatre mixed with American Vaudeville to present a British operetta! The parallels I found between all of these forms of entertainment were amazing. Everything fit together like it was meant to be. As the town celebrates this news, an infuriated Katisha appears to claim that Nanki-Poo is rightfully betrothed to her. The townspeople refuse to hear her and she is drowned out by the crowd’s shouting. She swears revenge.

Act II – While preparing for her wedding, Yum-Yum’s friends remind her of Nanki-Poo’s impending execution. The groom arrives to find Yum-Yum in tears, and tries to cheer her up. Ko-Ko enters with unhappy news: the Mikado’s law decrees that when a husband is beheaded for flirting, his wife must be buried alive. Yum-Yum refuses to marry under these conditions, and Nanki-Poo implores Ko-Ko to execute him on the spot. The Mikado is expected to arrive at any moment. Unable to perform the violent act, Ko-Ko decides to produce a false affidavit acknowledging the execution. Nanki-Poo and Yum-Yum are secretly rushed out of town.

When the Mikado and Katisha arrive, Ko-Ko, Pitti-Sing and Pooh-Bah describe the execution in elaborate detail. However, the Mikado has only come in search of his son. Katisha sees Nanki-Poo’s name on the death certificate, and the Mikado, though understanding, insists that the three conspirators must be punished for their part in his death.

The only solution to save these three is for Nanki-Poo to return and reveal the conspiracy. He fears that Katisha will insist on his execution, and proposes that Ko-Ko attempt to woo and marry Katisha himself. In the face of certain and painful death, Ko-Ko agrees. He finds Katisha, still angry and now devastated by news of Nanki-Poo’s death, and begs for mercy. He confesses harboring passionate feelings for her, and she soon accepts his proposal. Katisha entreats the Mikado to take mercy on her new husband and his conspirators. Nanki-Poo and Yum-Yum make their reappearance, much to the shock of Katisha and the Mikado. Ko-Ko quickly explains that as the Mikado’s word is law, it is reasonable to claim a man condemned to death as dead already. The Mikado is satisfied and the town celebrates with song and dance.

The Lyric Opera of Kansas City apprentice program offers selected students at the University of Kansas and University of Missouri-Kansas City valuable experiences in training to become a professional opera singer. Participants in both programs have numerous opportunities to gain performance experience through chorus, comprimario and principal roles and with community outreach and activities.

The Lyric Opera has a proven track record of casting apprentice program alumni in leading roles when appropriate. Lyric Opera of Kansas City Apprentices have appeared with opera companies small and large from around the world, some who are on the stage for The Mikado.

When asked what was the first opera he watched Mr. Carr said, “...the first opera i saw was the Magic Flute, when i was probably 12 or so. Funny thing is i hated it!” as part of the Company’s 10 Questions series with artists, Mr. Carr shared about how that early hate of opera has disappeared and why he believes opera has been unjustly stereotyped. read excerpts from his interview below.

The opera role you haven’t performed, but would like to perform the most?chris: Pelleas from Pelléas and Mélisande and Macbeth from Verdi’s Macbeth.

What is an average day like for you? Do you have a set routine? chris: an average day for me consists of just a few key things. rehearsals/practicing, workout, and keeping social. i have no set routines, but i consider it an good day when all three of those things happen.
