Men’s soccer head coach Brad Hauter

recently sat down with Tiger Weekly to offer insights on the 2013 season.

TW: Last year, you won the NCAC

Championship, ended the season ranked 20th in the nation and lost a

heartbreaker in OT in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

What is the outlook for 2013?

BH: The potential of this year’s team is unlimited. Part of the journey to

winning a national championship is be-lieving it is possible. Our talent this

year is off the chart and this is the first year where every guy walking in the door believes we can win it all.

TW: What can we expect from the

2013 recruiting class? Are they ready to play right away?

BH: I think this is the strongest and

deepest recruiting class we have had.

There are 6-8 guys ready to make an

immediate impact and another 6-8 that are on the doorstep. If this group is as

strong in their character, chemistry and mental approach as they are in talent,

it’s going to be an amazing four year run.

TW: What are you expecting from

your returning players this season? Any standouts?

BH: It would be tough to nail down

only a handful of players who have im-proved as I really liked what I saw from

most everyone last spring. We had a lot of guys invest a great deal in their development after last season and we

will see the benefit of that in the com-ing months.

TW: Will coaching the 2013 team

present any significantly different chal-lenges than previous teams?

BH: Two of our challenges include 1)

Do we have the “TEAM FIRST” guys that can put personal agendas aside for

the good of the group and 2) Compla-cency is always a concern when you

have a team this talented.

TW: DePauw’s record seems to help opponents elevate their game and rais-

es expectations for ever-greater achievement. How do you help the

players address the pressure?

BH: Handling the pressure is a gradual build as every game we play we are a

“disliked” opponent. Beating DePauw is often the benchmark used by other teams to measure the success of their

season and so every game comes with a tremendous amount of pressure. We

try to create heavy pressure and high expectations in our training and in com-

petition for starting spots to help our players organically understand the de-

mands of conference and NCAA play.

Five questions with Coach Brad Hauter

Pre-season training started bright and early for the Tigers on Saturday, August 17th as players and staff gathered for the requisite

fitness test at 5:30 am. A quick break for breakfast followed and then training began in earnest with a “Returners vs. Newcomers” scrimmage. The incoming recruits held their own through most of three 30 minute periods, but in the third session the experience of

the Returners began to pay off. Level of play was competitive and aggressive as participants enjoyed their return to the pitch.

DePauw Men’s Soccer plays differ-

ently than most. While the majority of

soccer teams in the US use the 4-4-2

system and opt for zone defense, De-

Pauw turns to a 3-4-3 with man cov-

erage.

Within the system, certain posi-

tions call for players with distinct per-

sonality types and skill sets, according

to head coach Brad Hauter.

Below is a primer on what

the team looks for to make

the 3-4-3 work.

The system: Tiger offense is

based on finding shape quickly

and creating both depth and

width on the field to manufac-

ture scoring opportunities.

The midfield plays in a dia-

mond shape., with an attack-

ing mid, a defensive mid and

two wide mids. While every-

one has defensive responsibil-

ities, two marking backs, a

cover back and the goalkeep-

er serve as the final line of defense.

Forwards: The finishers and playmak-

ers. “We need the ability to do both

through some combination of person-

nel,” comments Hauter. “They must

come with an assassin’s mindset and

should be thinking ‘just give me half a

touch in the box and I will score”.

Attacking mid: The quarterback.

This player needs to know how to best

utilize the different attacking pieces

around him. “The attacking mid needs

to float in the seams of the zones, un-

derstanding where the space is and

how to attack it,” says Hauter.

Defensive mid: The team’s engine.

To play this position requires someone

with the mindset that the middle of the

field is his and his alone, says Hauter.

“The defensive mid should expect that

no one comes through the middle of

the field without his permission.”

Wide mids: The thoroughbreds.

We need these guys to cover a lot of

ground quickly, explains Hauter, add-

ing, “We expect them to be very ag-

gressive and to attack whenever possi-

ble. They should always be on go. On

the flip side, they are totally accounta-

ble for their space defensively. The

outside mid defensive mindset should

be that their mark will have no impact

on the game.”

Lockdown marking backs: The

warriors. “These guys need a boxer’s

mentality, They should feel that if they

were in a ring with an opposing for-

ward only one of ‘em would come out

still standing...and it wouldn’t

be the forward! They need

the mindset that the oppos-

ing forward needs to ask per-

mission before doing any-

thing in our defensive third.”

Cover back: The thinkers.

“Cover back is a very cere-

bral position. If played cor-

rectly, the cover back may

not break a sweat but he will

have a headache after the

game. He must problem

solve and communicate solu-

tions quickly while keeping us

organized and pushed to the

next available free man.”

Goalkeeper: The rock. This player

needs to be “mentally tough X 2” ex-

plains Hauter, a former goalkeeper.

“Our goalkeeper must be able to stand

in goal and deal with amazing amounts

of mental pressure. He must be men-

tally tough, physically dominant and a

clear communicator. He must be able

to keep us shaped and motivated to

defend.”

The Home of DePauw Men’s Soccer Alums Everywhere

Where Are They Now? With 1987 grad Jon Dill

Jon Dill, a four year soccer letterman at DePauw (1983-1986), is 10th in Tigers All-Time Career Leaders for goals

scored with 29. A forward, Dill’s name also appears on the All-Time Career Assists list with 11, All-Time Points list

with 69 and was the Single Season Goals Leader in 1986 with 14 .

When asked his favorite DePauw soccer memory, however, not one of those achievements makes the list. Instead,

Dill tells the story of travelling to Washington University in St. Louis for a game that DePauw considered critical in

their quest to make the NCAA tournament. As a senior, Dill felt the importance of the game. The Tigers, definitely

underdogs, had lost to WashU in their last three meetings.

Says Dill, “I don’t remember all the details, but I believe it was tied 0-0 at halftime. Shortly into the second half, Tim

Graham put the game winner in the back of the net. I don’t even remember if it was a header, volley or breakaway.

Game over… 1-0 victory!” What Dill does remember even after 27 years is the image of Graham running like crazy

down the sideline, chased down and tackled by the team. “It’s a very vivid image. Almost like yesterday,” he com-

ments

The experience of playing soccer at DePauw influenced Dill in multiple ways. “Obviously, I love to compete, just

like all of us. But soccer at DPU was balanced. It wasn’t all about soccer. It was also about the friends you made for

life, like my wife. And it was also about the academics, which led me to my various professional experiences,” says

Dill.

Today, Dill lives in Cincinnati with his wife and three boys. He works as CFO at Ampac Packaging LLC, a company

he has helped grow from a single site, single product enterprise to a firm with 14 sites across the US, Europe and Asia.

Personally, he lists his greatest achievements as his faith and his “awesome” boys and “incredible” wife. His current

passion is coaching soccer for his kids. “I love seeing them grow, see them make the same mistakes I did and helping

them learn,” he explains.

Do you have a favorite DePauw soccer memory you’d like to share? Want to reconnect with former team-

mates? Do you know of a Men’s Soccer alum whose story should be told? Tiger Weekly is taking names and

making contacts for our WHERE ARE THEY NOW? feature. Please email us with suggestions for alumni you’d

like to read about. If you don’t have a current address for the player, send along the name and graduation

year and we’ll do our best Sherlock Holmes imitation to try to track them down.

A Message to our Men’s Soccer Alumni ... DePauw Men’s Soccer continues to build on the tradition of excellence that has been our trademark for almost 50 years. Over the last five years, we have made back-to-back NCAA appearances, won back-to-back NCAC Tournament Championships and put

together a record of 64-16-15 for a winning percentage of .752. Not bad. But, as impressive as the statistics may be, these achievements would not be possible without the coaches and play-

ers who preceded us. We stand on the shoulders of all those who came before, and our accomplishments are firmly rooted in the foundation of excellence you helped build.

It is important to us that we stay connected to those who built our legacy. We want to celebrate your contribution to our pro-gram, learn where your journey has taken you and hear how your soccer experience may have impacted you as a person. We

want to reconnect you to your program, and share your stories with current players, parents and recruits. We want you to contin-ue to be a part of DePauw Soccer — as an alum and as a fan.

There’s a lot we want you to know. A new stadium and a new athletic website are under construction. Old Gold will feature many soccer-related activities this October. But mostly, we want you to know that this space is for you. So take a minute to email

us and share what you’d like to see here. We’re all ears. Find us at [email protected] OR @depauwsoccer on Twitter. Looking forward to hearing from you and seeing many of you at Old Gold!

Change is in the air at DePauw

The soundtrack around campus this summer has been the steady drone of heavy equipment and construction crews. The payoff? A new turf field at Blackstock Sta-dium and a newly resurfaced track to be completed shortly. New athletic parking lots are being paved and grading is underway on the new soccer/field hockey fields. And at last, DePauw has a beautiful main en-tryway worthy of welcoming students and visitors into campus.
