Robert I. Parks, Jr., MD was born in Silsbee, Texas and attended public schools in Silsbee. He attended and graduated from Baylor University where he was on a 4-year football scholarship. After college he spent 4 years at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas, graduating in 1972. Following an internship at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, he did his anesthesiology residency at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas under Dr. M. T. “Pepper” Jenkins. His interest in anesthesiology began after his second year in medical school when he spent eight weeks in a Preceptorship under Dr. Jenkins. After this experience, Dr. Parks said he never considered another specialty. It was Dr. Jenkins who emphasized involvement in organized medicine at the local, state, and federal levels.

After his residency, Dr. Parks served two years in the U. S. Air Force at the U. S. Medical Center Keesler in Biloxi, Mississippi. He felt these two years were a nice transition from Parkland’s “knife and gun” Club to semi-private practice.

In 1977, after his discharge from the Air Force, Dr. Parks and family returned to Dallas to join Dr. Roy Simpson and his newly formed group at Baylor University Medical Center. Dr. Simpson was considered one of the world’s experts in halothane hepatitis and had spent one year on sabbatical from the London Hospital in London, England at Parkland Hospital. Dr. Parks had worked with Dr. Simpson his last year at Parkland, and respected him a great deal. In addition to Dr. Simpson, Dr. Peter Walling, Dr. Michael Ramsay and Dr. Colin Blogg had come to the U. S. from Dr. Simpson’s staff in London. Dr. Catherine Blakeney came to the U. S. from a sister hospital in London. The only U. S. graduate in the original group was Dr. Donovan Campbell, who had recruited Dr. Simpson to be the new chief of anesthesiology at Baylor. With 5 Brits and 2 Yanks, the new group was known as the “British Group.” Over the past 35 years the group has grown much larger and is now part of Pinnacle Partners in Medicine.

Dr. Parks became active in the staff leadership at Baylor University Medical Center serving as President in 1999 and Chairman of the Medical Board in 2000. He also sat on the Board of Trustees for Baylor’s Heart and Vascular Hospital for 3 years. TSA involvement began in 1982 as an Alternate Delegate, Delegate, District Director, Treasurer and President in 1992-1993. He has served as Alternate Delegate and Delegate from the TSA to the ASA House of Delegates. He also spent three years as Texas Alternate Director to the ASA Board of Directors. In the ASA, he has been on the ASA Standards Committee and the original Practice Parameters Committee on the Use of Pulmonary Artery Catheters. This 1 ½ year appointment resulted from a disagreement with Dr. Jim Arens who chaired the Practice Parameters Committee. He certainly was repaid from a difference of opinion with “the boss.” Dr. Arens has always been a great role model for Dr. Parks and many, many others in anesthesia.

In 1998, Dr. Presley Chalmers, a former DSA recipient from Houston and a founding Board of Trustees member of the Texas Medical Liability Trust, asked Dr. Parks to serve on a claims review committee of TMLT, which is the med-mal insurance company that TMA formed in 1975, when physicians in Texas couldn’t get insurance from the other med-mal companies. It currently insures over 16,000 Texas physicians. Dr. Parks sat on the TMLT Board of Trustees for 10 years including being Chairman of the Board for the last 18 months of his tenure.

Dr. Parks is very appreciative to his partners in Physicians Anesthesia Practice and now Pinnacle Partners in Medicine, for their support for his activities of medical staff, TSA/ASA, and TMLT.

Dr. Parks has been married to Gretta for 45 years, having met at Baylor University. They married two weeks before she started her teaching career and three weeks before Dr. Parks started medical school. She taught until they started their family. Early in Dr. Parks’ residency, Dr. Jenkins’ wife, Betty, encouraged Gretta to be involved in organized medicine and to support Dr. Parks in his participation. She has done that very graciously and willingly. They have 3 children: Julie, a Baylor University grad who is married to William Seale, an SMU grad and a Senior Vice President of Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty group in Dallas. They have two children: Parker, 12 and Charlotte 10; Robb, a UT grad and co-founder and partner of Moran Capital, LLC, a real estate investment and development company in Dallas, is married to Allison, also a UT grad. Their children are Lauren 6, and Ben 3; Megan, another Longhorn grad with a Masters in Education from SMU and a 5th grade teacher in Highland Park, Dallas, is married to Thad Beckner, a grad of the College of Charleston, Charleston, South Carolina and Assistant Vice-President for Henry S. Miller Brokerage, LLC in Dallas. They just celebrated their second wedding anniversary and currently have Oliver, a King Charles Spaniel. Gretta and Bob are very happy to have their three children, their spouses and 4 grandchildren living in Dallas.

The practitioner of anesthesiology must possess the scientific background for clinical practice; maintain state-of-the-art knowledge of not only the specialty, but also of all additional related disciplines which may impact it; maintain an up-to-the-minute armamentarium of knowledge and skills for the selection and use of complex equipment, pharmacological agents, and procedures necessary for the provision of quality patient care; manage self and colleagues to function toward common goals in the clinical setting, the clinical and educational institutions, and the community in which the practice resides; serve as an expert in matters involving health care delivery; serve as an informed manager of clinical and educational services provided, including the acquisition and distribution of resources necessary in meeting professional goals; and provide assistance with and support of other service providers, departments, institutions, and organizations dependent upon the professional expertise of the practitioner. The activity is intended to provide the most recent information on issues that affect the day-to-day practice of the physician. •Discussperioperativemanagementandgoalsfor:patientswithischemiccardiomyopathy, myocardial ischemia; interpret how management of the early septic patient in the OR can predict patient outcome.

•Recognize the current controversy regarding management of patientswith traumaticbrain injury (TBI);discussoptimalfluidmanagement inpatients with TBI; and describe new approaches to managing patients with TBI.

•Describeincidenceandimpactofheartfailureonanestheticmanagementfor non-cardiac surgical cases, and discuss perioperative management of patients with left ventricular assist devices for non-cardiac surgical cases.

•Formulate a management plan for transfusion avoidance; recognizethe differences between consent and assent associated with providing anesthesia to adolescents; and examine the intersection of competing ethical, moral, legal, and medical interests in the anesthetic care of a Jehovah Witness child, and develop a practical approach to avoiding pitfalls.

•Realize the implications, complications, and physiologic effects ofradiation in regard to anesthesia management.

•Compareperioperativestrategiesforthepreventionofstroke.

•Discussimpactofvariousanesthetictechniques(general,regional,TIVA)on incidence POCD; utilize the various techniques available for use in regional anesthesia including ultrasound; and predict adverse anesthesia outcomes in obese patients.

•Discuss the most recent recommendations in airway management;gain experience with the latest available airway devices; and apply appropriate preoperative history and physical examination to assess and identify strategies to facilitate ventilation and oxygenation in difficult pediatric and adult airways.

•Extrapolate criteria for themanagement anddisposition of subsets ofpatients from the post anesthetic care unit, and formulate an inpatient or outpatient (if appropriate) anesthetic plan.

Hyatt’s Wolfdancer Golf Course (Recently named by Golfweek as one of the “Best Resort Courses” in 2012.)The 21st Annual TSA Golf Tournament begins with a shotgun start at 7:45 a.m. Meet at the Pro Shop at 7:15 a.m. for pairings. The tournament fee includes green fees, shared cart, practice balls, box lunch and refreshments on the cart, and prizes for first, second, and third place teams, longest drive and closest to the pin. Cost per player: $175.00 (Advance purchase required.)

PLEASE NOTE: All players shall abide by the rules and regulations of the golf course. Individuals shall be responsible for damage to golf cars, the golf course, clubhouse, and other facilities caused by their participation.
