In his eighth season, head coach Kyle Kepler is tasked with preparing his squad to compete with some of the nation’s top teams. “The big picture and story is we are in the Pac-12 . We now have a full understanding of what that is and what it means,” Kepler said. “We have to continue to raise our level of energy and passion to that level each time we step on the track . Our athletes need to compete with confidence and expect to place well in the conference. The pundits picked us to score nine points at the Pac-12 championships meet last year and we put up 21 because we had kids fighting and scraping for any points they could get. This year we have to enter that meet expecting to score more points and expecting to finish higher as a team . With a veteran team I like our chances to improve upon our finish a year ago.”

With the loss of only two seniors from the 2012 team, the Utes have the experience and talent necessary to make some noise in 2013 . With the return of NCAA Qualifier Langley Iverson from injury, this year’s Utah team will be one to watch out for . After taking a whole season off with a leg injury, Iverson returns to high jump more determined than ever to achieve All-American status . In 2011, Iverson qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships by clearing the barrier of 6-0 .75 feet, just shy of breaking

the school record. Iverson went on to finish 17th at the national meet, but injury forced her to sit out in 2012. Under the careful watch of assistant coach Andrew Levin, Iverson has improved her skills and strength to finally get over the bar and become a top jumper in the country . “The anticipated return of Iverson will be welcomed this season,” Kepler stated. “Iverson (a four time NCAA qualifier) redshirted a year ago. She will be joined by a talented newcomer Kailey Hansen who has looked good this fall .” Senior Klaudia Rokossa will also be a valuable asset to Utah’s jumps group . During the indoor season, Rokossa improved steadily and capped off the season with a career-best pole vault mark of 12-10.75 feet finishing 11th at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships. Unfortunately, injury prevented Rokossa from competing

during the outdoor season. With time to prepare, Rokossa is set to improve her on her personal-best mark and score team points during the Pac-12 Championships . “Our pole vault athletes are healthy and looking to contribute this year as well,” Kepler continued. “Rokossa and junior Theresa Waybright were plagued by injury a year ago, but look to have fully recovered and are jumping well thus far .” Coming off a historic cross country season where the Utes finished eighth in the Pac-12 and beat in-state rival BYU for the first time in program history at the NCAA Mountain Regional Championships, the Utah distance group features several elite athletes including All-American Amanda Mergaert . Mergaert is a four-time NCAA qualifier who will not only boost the team in the distance events, but also on relay teams . Mergaert was a member of the school-record setting distance-medley team the previous two seasons and will again be a solid anchor for the group . During the indoor season in 2012, Mergaert was the MPSF Champion in the mile breaking her own school record with a time of 4:39.29. The outdoor season featured Mergaert earning 14th in the 1500m race at the NCAA Championships . Entering the 2013 track season, Mergaert is fresh off an All-American performance at the NCAA Cross Country Championships where she finished 14th overall. The distance group will also be strengthened by the addition of junior transfer Giselle Slotboom . Transferring from Jacksonville State, Slotboom earned

Ohio Valley Freshman of the Year honors and boosts an already talented distance squad. Slotboom enters the 2013 track season fresh off representing the Netherlands at the European Cross Country Championships . Her experience and speed will play a pivotal role in the success of the distance runners . Sophomores Susannah Hurst, and Andrea Chavez will also be vital to the distance runners . Both athletes qualified for the NCAA First/Second Rounds in 2012 and look to build upon that success this year .

2013 SEASON OUTLOOK With a successful inaugural season into the Pac-12 Conference behind it, the University of Utah women’s track and field team is ready to build upon its success as it competes in the toughest conference in the country.

With a plethora of talent to choose from, the Utes are bound to continue their success in the distance medley relay . The relay team has broken the school record in each of the previous two seasons and was just shy of qualifying for the NCAA Championships in both seasons . Under Kepler’s watchful eye, the relay is determined to continue its success and make it over the peak to qualify for the 2013 NCAA Championships . “After one of the best cross country seasons in school history, I expect our distance runners to continue to improve on the track,” Kepler said . “Amanda is obviously the leader of that group, but Susannah, Giselle, and Andrea have all produced at this level early in their careers and will look to continue their development.”

“We have some other young women on the verge of having a breakthrough season . Kate Stringfellow had a solid cross-country season and was more consistent than she has ever been which is always a good sign . Nikki Rietz could also step up in the mid-distances . Newcomer Charlotte Kuzminsky brings a lot of talent to that group as well . Hopefully, we will be able to add Rebekah Winterton and AuraLea Fain back into the long distance group . They sat out cross-country due to injury, but rehab has been going well .” Under the watch of associate head coach Burke Bockman, the Utah sprinters and hurdlers have developed into an important piece for the team . The 2012 season featured the breakout year of senior Stephanie Jolley and junior Rosalie (Griffin) Waller . In her second season under Bockman, the former walk-on Waller led the Utes in the 800m, finishing seventh at the Pac-12 meet and qualifying for nationals. Jolley rose as one of the top hurdlers in the conference and finished

the season as a qualifier for the First/Second Rounds of the NCAA Championships . Jolley not only shined in the hurdles, but also anchored the 4x400m relay with teammates Lauryn McKay, Alyssa Johnson and Ali Eisenbeiss that finished with a top time of 3:41.12, which was just shy of qualifying for the national meet. With all four runners returning in 2013, the Utes 4x400m relay has sights set on making noise not only at the Pac-12 Championships, but also the NCAA Championships . “The sprints and hurdles groups have looked as good as they ever have,” Kepler commented . “Jolley had a breakout year as a junior and has carried that over into fall practice. Senior hurdler and school-record holder Angela Kaplar is rounding into form nicely .”

“We also have a nice quartet of 400m and 800m runners that are very fit right now,” Kepler continued. “Senior Lucy Yates, a three-time NCAA qualifier, returns to headline that group . Waller, Eisenbeiss and true-freshman Allison Aafedt have practiced together all fall and look poised to make some noise at the conference and national level in the 800 meters .” The throws group, under the direction of assistant coach Tapio Kuusela, will be one to watch this year . Senior Anneli Stahl has a chance to crown her college career by qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the hammer and weight throws . Along with Stahl, senior Cynthia Sanchez has the potential to surprise many in the weight throw . Junior Destanae Howerton-Davis has emerged as the top discus thrower for the team and will be contending for a spot at the outdoor national meet . In her freshman season, Kaitlin Urmston broke the school record in the javelin throw . Now with a year of experience, Urmston will look to improve on that mark and establish herself as a top javelin thrower in the conference . Sophomore transfer Aoife Hickey will be a strong addition to the already talented group of throwers. Hickey’s marks during practice give her a strong chance of going all the way to the NCAA Championships in the hammer throw . “This is probably the best throws team I have had at Utah,” Kuusela said . “There is a chance that all the school records will fall with the exception of the hammer throw. I expect Hickey, Stahl, Howerton-Davis, and Urmston to place higher than last year in the Pac-12 Championships .” The 2013 schedule will also favor the Utes to record top performances . Utah will host two meets in April and give the athletes a chance to compete at their home facilities, McCarthey Family Track & Field. “We have a terrific schedule this year,” Kepler said. “Both the indoor and outdoor schedules should provide a balance of great competition and excellent venues. We wanted to host two meets this year to give our large

group of seniors a couple of opportunities to compete in front of their family and friends .” “The initial meet on April 6 will come after our West Coast swing and a bye weekend for most of our team,” Kepler continued. “The April 12 meet should be outstanding as we have the local Utah schools along with Boise State, Wyoming and Idaho State committed to attend. Like our meet a year ago, it will be two hours of excitement due to the shortened schedule and excellent teams . We wanted to create a track meet that both the athletes and fans could get excited about, and that happened a year ago when you look at the marks . The early Friday evening time frame and knowing the meet only lasts two hours is a big plus for everyone .”

Kyle Kepler is heading into his eighth year as the head coach of the University of Utah women’s cross country and track & field programs. Kepler’s organization and attention to detail have allowed him to develop a solid foundation and create a competitive program that has steadily improved each year.

In 14 years of coaching at the NCAA Division I level, Kepler has seen 33 conference champions, 146 all-conference athletes, 50 NCAA qualifiers, 28 NCAA finals qualifiers, and 10 NCAA All-Americans. Kepler’s influence on his athletes is not just visible on the track, but also in the classroom . The women’s cross country squad has been honored by USTFCCCA as an All-Academic Team six out of the previous seven seasons, including the 2011 team which had a GPA of 3.308. The track and field team has been a USTFCCCA All-Academic team during five of the previous seven seasons with the 2012 team posting a GPA of 3 .236 .

2012-13 Under Kepler’s direction, the 2012 women’s cross country team posted a monumental season . Senior Amanda Mergaert qualified for her third consecutive NCAA Championships and became the first All-American from Utah in 25 years. Kepler also coached the Utes to a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Mountain Regionals, which marked the second highest finish for the Utes in school history, as well as the first time in program history that Utah has beaten in-state rival BYU at the regional meet .

2011-12 In the inaugural Pac-12 Conference season, Kepler led Utah into the most elite cross country conference in the country . During the year, the Utes outperformed expectations and finished eighth at the NCAA Mountain Regionals. Kepler also coached Mergaert to a second consecutive NCAA Qualifying performance and to becoming the first Utah cross country athlete to earn All-Pac-12 accolades . Not only did Kepler’s

attention focus on the athletic sphere, but his persistence for achievement in the classroom helped the Utes earn the second highest GPA in the conference with a 3 .308 . During the 2012 indoor track and field season, Kepler coached Mergaert to the school’s first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation individual title in the mile, shattering her own school record performance with a time of 4:39.29. Kepler also oversaw the development of the distance medley relay which finished the season ranked 15th and setting a new school record time of 11:05.78 for the second consecutive year. The Utes found a great deal of success in its inaugural Pac-12 outdoor track and field season. Kepler coached the Utes to a 10th-place finish with 21points. Earning the 21 team points were seven different individuals and one relay

KYLE KEPLERteam. Senior Brianna LeRoy became the first Utah track athlete to earn All-Pac-12 honors with her performance in the high jump. LeRoy went on to qualify for the NCAA Championships, finishing 22nd overall to earn third-team All-American accolades. Kepler also helped Mergaert to a 14th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, earning second-team All-American honors in the 1500m, breaking the school record and missing the finals by .15 of a second. Kepler coached nine athletes to the NCAA qualifiers (six were first-time qualifiers). The six first-time qualifiers featured one junior, two sophomores and three true freshmen, all of whom finished in the top-50 at the NCAA Championships in their respective events. Mergaert also finished the year meeting the U.S. Olympic Trials ‘B’ qualifying standard .

2010-11 In the 2010 cross country season, Kepler led a very young Ute squad to a fifth-place finish at the Mountain West Conference Championships . Kepler served as meet director last season when the Utes hosted the 2010 NCAA West Regional, which received great reviews from critics and coaches from around the region . Under Kepler’s guidance, Mergaert took advantage of her home course and ran to a ninth-place finish and qualified for the NCAA Championships, where she finished 45th overall . The 2011 indoor track and field season, saw the Utes finish fifth at the MWC Indoor Championships. Junior Langley Iverson finished second in the high jump at the conference championships and qualified for the NCAA Championships with a mark just shy of a school-record . Iverson cleared the six-foot barrier twice throughout the season en-route to a 17th-place finish at the NCAA Championships. The distance medley relay team comprised of Alyssa Abbott, Alyssa Johnson, Lucy Yates, and Mergaert ran a new school-record time of 11:11.71 and earned a second-place finish at the Alex Wilson Invitational. That quartet was 13th in the country and just missed qualifying for the NCAA Championships . Throughout the indoor season, Kepler oversaw the Utes break three school records, including the mile three different times by Mergaert. The success the Utes experienced during the indoor season carried over to the outdoor season where Kepler saw his athletes break three more school records: including the five-

kilometer (Abbott), which had not been touched in over 23 years, as well as Angela Kaplar (100m hurdles), and Abbott and Mergaert (1500m). Mergaert qualified for the NCAA Championships and finished 14th in the 1500m race. At the Drake Relays, the Utah distance medley relay earned the school’s first ever Drake Relay championship with a school-record time of 11:17.09. Abbott and Mergaert finished second and third in the 1500 meter run with Abbott’s time (4:19.73) breaking the 30-year-old school record . Mergaert would go on to break that record with her winning performance of 4:16.57 at the NCAA Regional Championships. LeRoy scored in five events (Heptathlon, 100m hurdles, Long Jump, Javelin, and High Jump) at the conference meet to lead the Utah effort in its final appearance at the MWC Outdoor Championships .

2009-10 During the 2009 cross country season, Kepler guided one of the youngest teams in the country to a sixth-place finish at the MWC Championships, with two freshmen finishing in the top 30 . At the NCAA Mountain Regional meet, four of Utah’s five scoring runners were freshmen. Kepler not only coached the young athletes with a high level of performance, but emphasized the importance of academics with five of his cross country athletes achieving academic all-conference status . At the MWC Indoor Championships, the Utes finished fourth overall for the second consecutive year. In outdoor track and field, Utah finished sixth overall at the conference meet, but scored 70 or more points for the second straight year .

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING ABOUT KYLE KEPLERCHELSEA DIGRAZIAFormer University of Utah Track/Cross Country Athlete

“I was a walk-on my freshman year when we were under the supervision of a different coach and was introduced to Coach Kep my sophomore year . Under the excellent coaching and supervision of Kep I dropped my mile time by 25 seconds, broke the school record in the mile and ran my way to an all region spot in cross country . Kep had the ability to assess each runner’s individual talents and devloped appropriate workouts accordingly . I trusted my training from Coach K and knew that if I did what he was asking, I was going to run fast. He was always attentive to each individual runner’s needs and spent time coaching each girl on the team . I feel that Kyle has a great ability to take any runner, assess their strengths and weaknesses and then train them into the best shape of their lives . He is attentive to injury and does not force training through ailments, which is key in sports like cross country and track where overuse and abuse is so common . I know that I am not alone in these opions about his coaching and have had many successful teammates who would agree . Kep took a cross country team (my sophomore year) who could barely finish a workout and turned them into a 3rd place finisher at the conference meet (my senior year) with two runners making all region and one runner making nationals. Even after my running career finished, I have watched Kep’s cross country and track programs continue to improve each year with more athletes making it to big caliper meets like Nationals every season.”

CODY KRENKAHead Cross Country Coach/Head Track & Field Coach • Elko High School (Nev.) “Coach Kepler is a great coach who has an amazing ability to take a young athlete fresh out of high school and turn her in to a competitive NCAA Division 1 athlete. He realizes that each athlete has different potential and works hard to get each girl to that potential. As a distance coach for 11 years, I have had more than my fair share of athletes compete at the next level and I can honestly say that the distance program under Coach Kepler at the University of Utah is usually my highest recommendation for my female athletes .”

The interior of the track has a 75 x 125-yard AstroTurf field, along with areas for the throwing and jumping events.

The McCarthey Family Track & Field can be illuminated for night use by four banks of permanent lights. There is a lawn-style spectator seating on the berm along the east side . The facility was designed by Losee Architects’ Sports Division and the general contractor was Big D Construction. During designated times when it is not reserved for use by Utah athletics, campus recreation and club sports, the track will be open to the public. The University of Utah officially dedicated the McCarthey Family Track & Field on Oct . 23, 2010 . Honored at the proceedings were philanthropists Tom, Phil, Sarah and Maureen McCarthey. Representing their late brother Shaun was his widow Ning. The McCartheys, longtime Utah athletics supporters, provided a generous lead gift of $2 million. The University of Utah’s Campus Recreation Services and Administrative Services departments funded the remaining $600,000 of the $2 .6 million project . “The McCarthey family has always been very generous throughout our community and the country, for that matter,” said Utah Director of Athletics Dr. Chris Hill . “We are very excited that they were so charitable to our program and made this long-awaited track a reality. The addition of the McCarthey Family Track & Field comes at a great time for the University of Utah. It will not only serve our student-athletes, it will also benefit many other groups and individuals throughout the campus .” “We believe that students and people of all ages need to have a place to run and jump and play games,” said Phil McCarthey . Until the McCartheys stepped forward with their gift, the University of Utah had gone 28 years without an on-campus track and field. A track in old Rice Stadium was removed during an expansion of the stadium back in 1982 and the Utah track team has been training at off-campus sites ever since. “The McCarthey Family Track & Field is monumental in so many ways,” said Kepler. “As the new home for our track and field program, this facility will give our student-athletes a world-class training and competition venue. In addition to the competitive advantage it offers us, we will now have a more flexible practice schedule, which will enhance the academic opportunities for our student-athletes . The McCarthey Family Track & Field will also send a very clear message to prospective recruits about the vision of our program’s future, which includes developing some of the best track and field student-athletes in the country. We will be forever thankful to the McCarthey family for its generous support of this facility and our program .”

The Pac-12 championship tradition includes 451 all-time team titles won by league institutions, with 306 men’s titles and 145 women’s championships. Utah brought 20 national championships to the league. The Pac-12, by far, leads all conferences with nearly 200 more championships than the next closest conference (Big Ten) . The moniker “Conference of Champions” has been earned by the number of titles, but also the depth of success. Pac-12 teams have won championships in 27 of the 37 Division I sports the NCAA sponsors and has reached double digit titles in 19 of those sports. Pac-12 institutions have won 10 NCAA titles in women’s cross country, seven in women’s indoor track & field, and six in women’s outdoor track & field. The Learfield Director’s Cup, presented annually to the country’s top intercollegiate athletic program, was awarded to Stanford for a record 18th consecutive year in 2011-12. The Pac-12 placed four institutions in the top 10, with UCLA (4th), USC (6th) and California (7th) joining the Cardinal . The Pac-12 Conference won nine NCAA titles during the 2011-12 academic year, the most by any conference. It marks the 11th time in the last 12 years—and the 46th time in 52 years—the Pac-12 has led or tied all conferences in NCAA championships won . California swept the men’s and women’s swimming titles, Stanford won the women’s soccer and women’s water polo crowns, and USC captured NCAA championships in men’s water polo and men’s tennis . Other NCAA crowns came from Oregon in women’s indoor track & field, UCLA in women’s volleyball and Arizona in baseball .
