Andersen, who won the Big Ten Medal of Honor in 1982, was arst-team All-Big Ten selecon at Michigan State and also garneredAcademic All-Big Ten accolades as a senior in 1981, a year in which herecorded the Big Tens longest eld goal with a 63-yarder. His successat Michigan State earned him a spot on the Walter Camp All-Century

Team. Andersen was draed in the fourth round of the 1982 NFL Draand went on to become the NFLs all-me leading scorer with 2,544points. In his NFL career that spanned from 1982 to 2007, Andersenwas a three-me All-Pro, a seven-me Pro Bowler and a member ofthe NFLs 1980s and 1990s All-Decade teams.

Looking he Legends Division: Michigan State

has reached the halfway point of its Big Ten

slate, standing atop the division standings with a

4-0 conference mark. Each of the Spartans

remaining conference games will be intra-divi-

sion showdowns, including matchups with

Michigan and Nebraska, which are tied for sec-

ond in the standings with 2-1 Big Ten records.

The Wolverines visit Michigan State this weekendwhile Nebraska returns home to face

Northwestern. Iowa and Minnesota are tied for

fourth in the division standings, holding 2-2 con-

ference marks and two games back of the

Spartans.

Leders Division Brekdown: Ohio State is in

first place in the Leaders Division with a 4-0

mark, while Wisconsin stands one game back at

3-1. The Buckeyes defeated division foe Penn

State last weekend to remain perfect in the con-

ference, and three of the Buckeyes remaining

four contests will be division contests. The

Badgers head to Iowa this week following a bye

last Saturday. Ohio State holds the head-to-head

tiebreaker over Wisconsin following the meeting

in Columbus earlier this season. Penn State and

Indiana are tied for third in the division race at

1-2, with the Nittany Lions hosting Illinois and

the Hoosiers welcoming Minnesota on Saturday.

Tweny nd Couning: Ohio State improved the

countrys longest active winning streak to 20

consecutive last Saturday following its win overPenn State. It is the second-longest winning

streak in program history, trailing only the 22

consecutive victories during the 1967-69 sea-

sons. It is tied for the seventh-longest streak in

Big Ten history. Conference programs have com-

bined for eight stretches of at least 20 or more

wins, with the 1901-03 Michigan squads holding

the conference record of 29 consecutive victo-

ries. Ohio State is one of only four teams nation-

ally with an 8-0 record and one of eight pro-

grams who enter the week undefeated.

Big Ten universities provide over $141 million in direct financial aid to more than 8,200 student-athletes

playing on more than 300 teams in 43 different sports.

Going Bowling: Minnesota became the fourthBig Ten team, and third Legends Division squad,to reach the six-win standard and achieve bowleligibility. The Gophers knocked off nationally

ranked Nebraska last weekend to reach the

landmark for the second straight season.

Minnesota has been to 15 postseason contestsin program history, having last appeared in the2012 Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas. The

Gophers join Michigan, Michigan State and OhioState as the Big Tens bowl-eligible programs.

Iowa, Nebraska and Wisconsin each have fivevictories and could become eligible for postsea-son play with one more win.

Where We Rnk: Four Big Ten teams appearedamong the top 25 in the latest BowlChampionship Series (BCS) standings, withMichigan State and Wisconsin making their first

appearances this season. Ohio State improvedto 8-0 overall and won its 20th straight game tohold steady at No. 4 in the BCS poll, whileMichigan had a bye and moved up to No. 21.The Spartans moved to 7-1 on the year andwere ranked No. 22, their first BCS ranking since

Dec. 4, 2011, while the Badgers had a bye on

Saturday and were slotted at No. 24, their firstappearance since Oct. 21, 2012.

Division Mchups: Four conference conteststhis weekend will be division matchups, includ-ing two within each division. In the LegendsDivision, Michigan travels to face first-placeMichigan State and Northwestern heads to

Nebraska. In the Leaders Division, Purdue hostsdivision-leader Ohio State and Penn State wel-comes Illinois. As part of divisional play, the BigTen has instituted a tiebreaker to determine the

Big Ten Football Championship Game partici-pants, if necessary. After head-to-head match-

ups, the next tiebreaker is records within thedivision, which makes winning divisional gamesan important part of the Big Ten title chase. See

Page 11 of this release for the full tiebreaker.

Fory is he New 30: With five teams rankedamong the top 16 in scoring offense, and theconference as a whole second nationally at 33.46points per game, Big Ten offenses are among

some of the most prolific in the nation. With

Ohio State and Michigan State both scoring more

than 40 points last weekend, conference teamshave combined to score 40 points or more 36

times this season, already surpassing last years

total of 27 such instances. Seven conferenceteams have crossed the 40-point barrier at leastthree times in 2013, with Ohio State leading the

way with six such outings. Michigan has scored atleast 40 points five times, Wisconsin and Indianahave done so four times and Illinois, MichiganState and Minnesota have three 40-point perfor-mances. Ohio State, Indiana, Michigan, Nebraska

and Wisconsin are among the nations top 16 inscoring offense, each averaging 39.9 points ormore per game this year.

Efficien Cook: Michigan State quarterbackConnor Cook now ranks among the conferences

all-time single-game leaders in completion per-

centage with his effort against Illinois last

Saturday. Cook completed 15 of 16 passes, a93.8 completion percentage, for 208 yards andthree touchdowns. His 93.8 percentage is sev-enth on the Big Tens single-game list and he

joins Northwesterns Kain Colter as this yearsadditions to the chart. Colter was a perfect

12-for-12 against Ohio State on Oct. 5, which istied for first in B ig Ten single-game history.

Trophy Time: Two rivalry trophies will be on theline this weekend when Iowa hosts Wisconsin

and Michigan State welcomes Michigan. The

Hawkeyes and Badgers first competed for the

Heartland Trophy, a brass bull statue, in 2004,with Iowa holding a 4-3 edge in the series.Saturdays Michigan-Michigan State contest fea-

tures the battle of the Paul Bunyan Trophy. It is

the 61st time the teams will meet with the trav-eling keepsake on the line, with Michigan holding

the all-time edge in the series, 35-23-2. In 1953,then-Michigan Governor G. Mennen Williamsdonated the four-foot wooden statue to mark

Michigan States acceptance into the Big Ten.

Four-Million Srong: Thanks to the attendancefigures following last weekends games across

the conference, Big Ten stadiums have wel-comed more than four million fans through the

turnstiles this year. It is the 21st straight season

the conference has crossed the four-million

mark in total attendance and the 24th yearoverall. The all games average of 70,932 fansper contest would rank sixth on the confer-ences all-time chart, and the conference games

only average of 73,675 is on pace to be thehighest in Big Ten history.

The winner of the Legends Division will meet the winner of the Leaders Division, with the games victor earning the Big TenChampionship and a chance to play in either the Rose Bowl Game or Bowl Championship Series Naonal Championship Game.

The Big Ten will continue to honor its past while recog-

nizing its current standouts at the conclusion of the 2013

campaign. The Big Tens enhanced football awards pro-

gram presents 18 individual trophies in addition to theBig Ten Championship trophy, bearing the names of one

or two former standouts. The distinguished names on

these football awards honor just a small sampling of the

countless student-athletes and coaches who have con-tributed to the conferences rich and storied history.

Seventeen of the honors will be awarded immediatelyfollowing the regular season, including awards for the

best quarterback, running back, receiver, tight end,offensive lineman, defensive lineman, linebacker, defen-sive back, kicker and punter. Each of these individualposition awards features the names of two former stu-

dent-athletes.

The Big Ten will also continue to honor the conferences

top coaches, offensive and defensive players and line-men and freshmen with end-of-year trophies. Big Ten

coaches have the opportunity to claim two awards.

Media voters will continue to select the Dave McClainCoach of the Year, which has been awarded since 1972,while coaches vote for the Hayes-Schembechler Coachof the Year award. The top offensive player will receivethe Graham-George Offensive Player of the Year award,the best defensive player will be awarded the Nagurski-Woodson Defensive Player of the Year award and thebest first-year standout will receive the Thompson-Randle El Freshman of the Year award.

The winner of the Big Ten Football Championship Gamewill receive the Amos Alonzo Stagg ChampionshipTrophy, while the most outstanding player in the game

will be awarded the Grange-Griffin Championship Game

MVP award. The conference also created two postcolle-

giate awards - the Ford-Kinnick Leadership Award andthe Dungy-Thompson Humanitarian Award.

The Big Ten leads all conferences with nearly 3,900 female athletes, and more than 550 televised or streamed womens athlec events.

The Big Ten football championship will be decided by a game played between the

two division champions. A team or teams that are not eligible to parcipate in apostseason football bowl game as a result of NCAA and/or Big Ten sancons shallnot be eligible to parcipate in the Big Ten football championship game. Thewinner of the Big Ten football championship game will represent the Conference

in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) unless a conference team other than thechampion is ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the nal BCS poll.

The following procedure will determine the representave from each division inthe event of a e:(a) If two teams are ed, the winner of the game between the two ed

teams shall be the representave(b) If three or more teams are ed, steps 1 through 7 will be followed unl a

determinaon is made. If only two teams remain ed aer any step, thewinner of the game between the two ed teams shall be the representave.1. The records of the three ed teams will be compared against each

other

2. The records of the three ed teams will be compared within theirdivision

3. The records of the three teams will be compared against the nexthighest placed teams in their division in order of nish (4, 5, and 6)

4. The records of the three teams will be compared against allcommon conference opponents;

5. The highest ranked team in the rst Bowl Championship Series Pollfollowing the compleon of Big Ten regular season conference playshall be the representave in the Big Ten Championship Game,unless the two highest ranked ed teams are ranked within onespot of each other in the BCS poll. In this case, the head-to-head

results of the top two ranked ed teams shall determine therepresentave in the Big Ten Championship

6. The team with the best overall winning percentage [excludingexempted games] shall be the representave

If one or both of the Big Ten division champions is ineligible to play in the Big Tenchampionship game, then the parcipant(s) in the Big Ten championship gameshall be determined by the following procedure:

a) If the ineligible team is ed for the division championship, then the teamit ed with shall be the Big Ten championship game representave.

b) If two or more teams are ed with an ineligible team for the divisionchampionship, then the ineligible team is removed and the remainingteams revert to the e-break procedure.

c) The division runner-up shall be the Big Ten championship gamerepresentave.

d) If there is a division runner-up e, then the ed teams shall revert to thee-break procedure.

If the championship game cannot be played (due to any reason beyond thecontrol of the Big Ten Conference), the two division champions (using divisionale-breakers as set forth above) shall be declared co-champions and the followingprocedure will be used to determine the Big Ten Conference representave tothe Bowl Championship Series:

a) Teams ranked either No. 1 or No. 2 in the nal BCS poll will automacallybe placed in the BCS championship game.

b) If the two divisional representaves met previously in the season andneither is ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the nal BCS standings, the teamranked highest in the nal BCS standings shall be the representaveto the BCS, unless the other team is ranked within ve or fewer places ofthe higher ranked team. In this case, the head-to-head results of the two

teams shall determine the Conferences BCS representave.c) If the two divisional representaves did not meet previously during the

season, the team ranked highest in the BCS standings shall be the BCS

representave.d) If the two teams are ed in the BCS standings, the team with the best

overall Big Ten record shall be the BCS representave.e) If the two teams remain ed aer d), the team with the best combined

record of the ed teams against all common Big Ten opponents eachteam played that season shall be the BCS representave.

f) If the two teams remain ed aer e), the representave will be the teamwith the best overall winning percentage.

g) If the two teams remain ed aer f), the representave will be the teamfurthest removed from BCS parcipaon.

h) If the two teams remain ed aer g), the representave shall bedetermined by a random draw.
