Eddleman led the Big Ten in punng in 1948 and also punted for the Illinois team that played in the 1947 Rose Bowl Game. Eddleman also holds the school records for longest punt and punt return. Beyond the football eld, Eddleman was a Chicago Tribune Silver Basketball winner as the Big Ten MVP , a two-me NBA All-Star, and competed in the high jump in the 1948 Summer Olympics in London. His name appears on the Big Ten’s Eddleman-Fields Punter of the Year award. The Spartans improved to 6-0 in the Big Ten and 9-1 overall to regis- ter their second division crown in the last three sea- sons. The Spartans won the outright Legends Division title in 2011 to advance to the inaugural Big Ten Championship Game. Big Ten schools have produced more than 1,450 Academic All-Americans, more than any other conference,

including 46 in the last academic year.

Keep Rolling: Ohio State tied a program recordwith its 22nd consecutive victory last Saturday,which is tied for the fifth longest streak in Big Tenhistory. The Buckeyes hold the nation’s longestactive-winning streak and the longest winningstreak by a conference team in more than 40years. Ohio State is among a group of six unde-feated teams in the nation and one of just four

squads in the country with a 10-0 mark. In addi-

tion, Buckeye coach Urban Meyer’s 22 straight vic-tories are the fifth-most by a coach to begin histenure at a school, behind Pop Warner’s 30 atPittsburgh, Fielding Yost’s 29 at Michigan, WalterCamp’s 28 at Yale and Larry Coker’s 24 at Miami.

Four in he BCS:  Four Big Ten teams appear inthe latest Bowl Championship Series (BCS)standings, with three teams moving up in thepoll and Minnesota making its first appearancesince the 2008 season. Ohio State held steadyat No. 3 in the BCS rankings, the Buckeyes’ high-est placement since ending the 2007 campaignat No. 1 overall. Michigan State rose three spotsto No. 13 in the BCS poll, the Spartans’ highestranking since being slotted at No. 13 on Nov. 27,2011. Wisconsin also climbed three slots to No.

19 in the BCS standings, the Badgers’ first top-20 rating since ending the 2011 season at No.10 overall. Minnesota moved into the BCS pollat No. 25, the Gophers first appearance sincebeing ranked No. 17 on Oct. 26, 2008.

Division Mchups:  Saturday features a full slate

of conference matchups, which includes four intra-division contests. In the Leaders Division, Purduewelcomes Illinois and Ohio State takes on Indiana,while Iowa hosts Michigan and Northwesternentertains Michigan State in Legends Divisiongames. As part of divisional play, the Big Ten hasinstituted a tiebreaker to determine the Big TenFootball Championship Game participants, if nec-essary. After head-to-head matchups, the next tie-breaker is records within the division, which

makes winning divisional games an important partof the Big Ten title chase. See Page 11 of this

release for the full tiebreaker.

Hyde Tide:  Ohio State running back Carlos Hydehad a career day against Illinois on Saturday,rushing for 246 yards and combining for fivetouchdowns in the Buckeye win. Hyde rushed forfour touchdowns and was on the receiving end

of another to become the first conference player

to score five touchdowns in a game since Illinois’Mikel Leshoure achieved the feat on Nov. 6,2010. Meanwhile, his 246 rushing yards are themost in the conference this season.

Running Seson: The month of November hasbeen highlighted by superb rushing performancesas six of the season’s top eight single-game effortshave come in the last three weeks. Ohio State’s

Carlos Hyde ran for a Big Ten-best 246 yards andWisconsin’s James White finished with 205 yardslast Saturday, two of the five 200-yard efforts byconference performers this season. In addition,Wisconsin rushed for a conference-high 554 yardsagainst Indiana last Saturday, which ranks eighth inBig Ten single-game history. Indiana’s TevinColeman (215) and Bill Belton (201) also surpassedthe 200-yard marker in November games, whileMinnesota’s David Cobb and Ohio State’s BraxtonMiller rushed for 188 and 184 yards, respectively,to rank among the conference’s top eight single-game efforts of 2013.

Trophy Time: Two more annual trophy gameswill be contested this week as Wisconsin andMinnesota battle for Paul Bunyan’s Axe, while

Illinois and Purdue compete for the PurdueCannon. The nation’s longest-running series isrenewed Saturday as the Badgers and Gophersbattle for Paul Bunyan’s Axe, with Wisconsinholding a 39-23-3 advantage with the keepsakeon the line. After a 1948 Gopher victory, theWisconsin lettermen’s group presentedMinnesota with the axe which has been award-ed to the winner of each game since. The

Boilermakers hold a 32-27-2 advantage in theseries for the Cannon, which began in 1943. Agroup of Purdue students brought the Cannonto the game in 1905, but it did not reappear atthe annual contest until 1943. The Cannon waslast fired in 2001, and has since been replacedwith a replica trophy.

Thnks o he Fns: For the ninth consecutiveyear and the 11th time overall, the Big Ten sur-passed the five-million mark in total attendanceamong all games. After welcoming better than

350,000 fans to five contests last Saturday, theconference has seen more than 5.2 millionpatrons attend its games this year. In 74 gamesthis season, Big Ten stadiums are welcoming an

average of 70,615 fans per game, which is onpace to rank sixth in conference annals.

Through the Big Ten’s media agreements with CBS Sports, ABC/ESPN, FOX and the Big Ten Network (BTN),

nearly 1,000 Big Ten events are produced and distributed naonally on an annual basis.

The Big Ten football championship will be decided by a game played between thetwo division champions. A team or teams that are not eligible to parcipate in apostseason football bowl game as a result of NCAA and/or Big Ten sancons shallnot be eligible to parcipate in the Big Ten football championship game. Thewinner of the Big Ten football championship game will represent the Conferencein the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) unless a conference team other than thechampion is ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the nal BCS poll.

The following procedure will determine the representave from each division inthe event of a e:(a) If two teams are ed, the winner of the game between the two ed

teams shall be the representave(b) If three or more teams are ed, steps 1 through 7 will be followed unl a

determinaon is made. If only two teams remain ed aer any step, thewinner of the game between the two ed teams shall be the representave.

  1. The records of the three ed teams will be compared against eachother

  2. The records of the three ed teams will be compared within theirdivision

  3. The records of the three teams will be compared against the nexthighest placed teams in their division in order of nish (4, 5, and 6)

  4. The records of the three teams will be compared against allcommon conference opponents;

  5. The highest ranked team in the rst Bowl Championship Series Pollfollowing the compleon of Big Ten regular season conference playshall be the representave in the Big Ten Championship Game,unless the two highest ranked ed teams are ranked within onespot of each other in the BCS poll. In this case, the head-to-headresults of the top two ranked ed teams shall determine therepresentave in the Big Ten Championship

  6. The team with the best overall winning percentage [excludingexempted games] shall be the representave

  7. The representave will be chosen by random draw.

If one or both of the Big Ten division champions is ineligible to play in the Big Tenchampionship game, then the parcipant(s) in the Big Ten championship gameshall be determined by the following procedure:a) If the ineligible team is ed for the division championship, then the team

it ed with shall be the Big Ten championship game representave.b) If two or more teams are ed with an ineligible team for the division

championship, then the ineligible team is removed and the remainingteams revert to the e-break procedure.

c) The division runner-up shall be the Big Ten championship gamerepresentave.

d) If there is a division runner-up e, then the ed teams shall revert to thee-break procedure.

If the championship game cannot be played (due to any reason beyond thecontrol of the Big Ten Conference), the two division champions (using divisionale-breakers as set forth above) shall be declared co-champions and the followingprocedure will be used to determine the Big Ten Conference representave tothe Bowl Championship Series:a) Teams ranked either No. 1 or No. 2 in the nal BCS poll will automacally

be placed in the BCS championship game.b) If the two divisional representaves met previously in the season and

neither is ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the nal BCS standings, the teamranked highest in the nal BCS standings shall be the representaveto the BCS, unless the other team is ranked within ve or fewer places ofthe higher ranked team. In this case, the head-to-head results of the twoteams shall determine the Conference’s BCS representave.

c) If the two divisional representaves did not meet previously during the  season, the team ranked highest in the BCS standings shall be the BCS

representave.d) If the two teams are ed in the BCS standings, the team with the best

overall Big Ten record shall be the BCS representave.e) If the two teams remain ed aer d), the team with the best combined

record of the ed teams against all common Big Ten opponents eachteam played that season shall be the BCS representave.

f) If the two teams remain ed aer e), the representave will be the teamwith the best overall winning percentage.

g) If the two teams remain ed aer f), the representave will be the teamfurthest removed from BCS parcipaon.

h) If the two teams remain ed aer g), the representave shall bedetermined by a random draw.

Big Ten universies provide over $141 million in direct nancial aid to more than 8,200 student-athletes

playing on more than 300 teams in 43 dierent sports.

A three-sport standout in football, basketball and baseball, Pat Richter earned

the Big Ten Medal of Honor in 1963. He was a consensus All-American in 1962,leading Wisconsin to the Big Ten Championship and the Rose Bowl Game. Alsothat season, he was an Academic All-American and was part of the Academic All-America Hall of Fame Class of 1995. He played for the Washington Redskins from1963-70 aer being selected in the rst round in 1963. Richter later assumed therole of director of athlecs at Wisconsin, serving from 1989-2004. His name ap-pears on the Big Ten’s Richter-Howard Wide Receiver of the Year trophy.

Drew Brees ended his collegiate career holding numerous school and conference

records en route to winning Big Ten Medal of Honor laurels in 2001. He was not onlyan All-American and a Maxwell Award winner on the eld, but was named AcademicAll-America of the Year his senior season. He guided the Boilermakers to the Big TenChampionship in 2000 and their rst Rose Bowl Game berth since 1967. Draed in2001, he played ve seasons with San Diego before moving to New Orleans in 2006.He became one of the many faces of the New Orleans community following the Hur-ricane Katrina tragedy by establishing numerous charitable foundaons to help thearea in its recovery.

Purdue’s Drew Brees

Awarded the Big Ten Medal of Honor in 1992, Mike Hopkins started in the Illinidefensive backeld as a sophomore, junior and senior. His teams went to fourconsecuve bowl games, capping his career as a captain for the 1991 squadthat went to the Sun Bowl. Hopkins was an Academic All-American in 1991 andgraduated with a degree in aerospace engineering. He will realize a childhooddream later this month when he climbs aboard a Souyz spacecra on Sept. 25for his rst spaceight. Hopkins will rendezvous with the Internaonal Space Sta-on and assist with several hundred experiments during his six-month mission.More informaon on Hopkins and his expedion can be found on nasa.gov.

Illinois’ Mike Hopkins

Dungy was Minnesota’s recipient of the 1977 Big Ten Medal of Honor, following

a standout career as the Gophers’ starng quarterback. He ended his career asthe school’s leader in pass aempts, compleons, touchdown passes and pass-ing yards. He was twice named the team’s Most Valuable Player before movingon to a successful career as a player and coach in the Naonal Football League.Dungy’s life has been marked by many community service iniaves. He alsosupports numerous non-prot organizaons such as Big Brothers/Big Sisters,the Boys and Girls Club, Prison Crusade Ministry and Family First, leading to hisname gracing the conference’s annual Humanitarian Award.

Minneso’s Tony Dungy

A four-year starter for the Hawkeyes from 1982-85, Staon nished his careerwith nearly 500 tackles, leading Iowa in the category in each of his seasons.He ended his career by winning the Big Ten Medal of Honor in 1986. Staonrecorded 125 or more tackles as a sophomore, junior and senior, years in whichhe earned rst-team All-Big Ten accolades. He cemented his status as a CollegeFootball Hall of Famer aer earning rst-team All-America accolades in 1984 and

1985. In the classroom, Staon earned Academic All-Big Ten honors as a sopho-more, junior and senior, and was an Academic All-American in his nal season.

Iow’s Lrry Son

Hammerstein was Indiana’s Big Ten Medal of Honor winner in 1996. He is theonly two-me Academic All-American in Indiana football history, earning thehonors following his junior and senior seasons. A four-year leerwinner, hestarted at defensive tackle his nal three years and was team captain as a seniorin 1995. Aer compleng his undergraduate work in biology, Hammersteinaended the IU School of Medicine before compleng his orthopedic surgery

residency at Michigan State. Currently he is a spinal surgeon in Bloomington.

Indin’s John Hmmersein

Winner of the 1997 Big Ten Medal of Honor, Fitzgerald was one of the mostdecorated linebackers in college football history. He was a two-me consensusAll-American, earning the honor as a junior in 1995 and a senior in 1996. Hewas the rst repeat winner of the Bednarik Award and Nagurski Trophy andwas inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008. Now in his seventhseason as the head coach at his alma mater, Fitzgerald has guided the Wildcatsto ve straight bowl games, including last year’s Gator Bowl victory, their rstbowl win since 1949. His name graces the conference’s annual Butkus-Fitzger-ald Linebacker of the Year Award.

Norhwesern’s P Fizgerld

Winner of the 1999 Big Ten Medal of Honor, Jansen was a two-me All-Big Ten

performer at Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to a naonal tle in1997. Serving as captain during his junior and senior seasons, Jansen earned AllAmerica status as a senior, while also garnering Academic All-Big Ten accoladesin 1997 and 1998. Following his collegiate career, Jansen was draed in thesecond round of the 1999 NFL Dra by the Washington Redskins and becamea model of consistency during his 10-year career. He started 125 of the 137games in which he played and was named a second-team All-Pro in 2005.

Michign’s Jon Jnsen

Urschel, who claimed the Big Ten Medal of Honor last May, was a rst-teamAll-Big Ten honoree in 2012, starng all 12 games at right tackle and helping theNiany Lions lead the Big Ten in total oense during the conference season. Acandidate for the 2013 Naonal Football Foundaon Naonal Scholar-AthleteAward, he earned his bachelor’s degree in less than three years on campus. Heearned his rst master’s degree last May and is currently working on his secondmaster’s. This semester, he is teaching Integral Vector Calculus and researching

mulgrid methods and computaonal mathemacs.

Penn Se’s John Urschel

Andersen, who won the Big Ten Medal of Honor in 1982, was a rst-teamAll-Big Ten selecon at Michigan State and also garnered Academic All-Big Tenaccolades as a senior in 1981, a year in which he recorded the Big Ten’s longesteld goal with a 63-yarder. His success at Michigan State earned him a spot onthe Walter Camp All-Century Team. Andersen was draed in the fourth round ofthe 1982 NFL Dra and went on to become the NFL’s all-me leading scorer with2,544 points. In his NFL career that spanned from 1982 to 2007, Andersen wasa three-me All-Pro, a seven-me Pro Bowler and a member of the NFL’s 1980sand 1990s All-Decade teams.

Winner of the 1984 Medal of Honor, Frank set school records for recepons andyards by a ght end during his career. Finishing with 121 recepons and 1,481yards, he was a two-me All-Big Ten honoree, earning the disncon as a juniorin 1982 and a senior in 1983, and was named team MVP his nal season. Frank’ssuccess extended beyond the eld as he was named an Academic All-Big Tenselecon and an Academic All-American his junior and senior seasons and was aRhodes Scholar nalist. Aer two Super Bowl tles with the San Francisco 49ers,Frank returned to Ohio State and received his doctorate in June, 1992.

The Big Ten is celebrang 100 years of the Big Ten Medal of Honor. The conference’s most presgious award, the Big Ten Medal

of Honor was rst awarded in 1915 to one student-athlete from the graduang class of each university who had “aained the

greatest prociency in athlecs and scholasc work.” In the 99 years of the Medal of Honor, over 1,300 student-athletes have

earned this disncon. Throughout the course of the season, the conference has highlighted previous Big Ten Medal of Honor

recipients in the sport of football, and those honorees appear below.
