Botanical art and illustration is the well-established tradition of portraying plants for scientific purposes, recording vanishing species for historical record or rendering the beauty and inspiration we experience in the flora of the world around us.

Denver Botanic Gardens’ School of Botanical Art and Illustration is designed to offer a comprehensive series of classes in botanical illustration, providing participants the drawing and painting skills required to render accurate and useful depictions of the plant world with a focus on detail. This program is for the dedicated illustrator, as well as the devoted amateur. It culminates in a certificate for some students and offers an ongoing program of botanical classes for others.

13. Botanical Illustration in Watercolor I 14. Botanical Illustration in Watercolor II 15. Portfolio Preparation Course

*Students are responsible for taking note of required prerequisites and determining if they are eligible for the course. Class sizes are limited and seats are meant for those with required experience to enjoy the experience.

WINTER/SPRING 2013 CATALOG OF COURSESSCHOOL OF BOTANICAL ART AND ILLUSTRATION

It is with great pleasure we announce a change in name for the home of botanical illustration at Denver Botanic Gardens. To better reflect the rigor and quality teaching within the program, it has been renamed the School of Botanical Art & Illustration. Much remains the same, but students pursuing a Certificate in Botanical

Illustration will now have access to a portfolio preparation class – a capstone to their experience here. Much has been said about the modern need to fuse art and science in order to expand economic development and enlightenment, but few programs are as direct in their impact as botanical illustration. Enjoy the varied offerings the School of Botanical Art & Illustration has to offer in this session.

GUEST WORKSHOPS

Italic Variations - Making Your Own Script Building on an understanding of script structure, this workshop will introduce the various changes or variations that can be made to the italic script to produce a wide range of effects. We will first focus on weight, height, compression and slope. Next, we’ll examine variables such as branches and serifs along with an exploration of the smallest changes that can drastically affect the appearance of letterforms. The emphasis will be on creating the maximum amount of differences between scripts while retaining defining characteristics. Gaining a deep understanding of italic will allow you to go beyond copying

a script and to use the calligraphy in a far more flexible and expressive way. At the end of the workshop you will produce a sample booklet of Italic variations and a finished example of flourish italic script. Fee: $310 member, $370 non-member. Entry level knowledge of Italic hand is required.

Maurice Pillard-Verneuil

Drawing on Tradition: Drypoint Printing (Intaglio Print) – Maurice Pillard-Verneuil Maurice Pillard Verneuil (1869 – 1942) was trained in the classical tradition of fine art and later on became deeply involved with the Art Nouveau movement.

He was strongly influenced by Grasset but developed his own personal style for decorative patterns and typography. In 1908 he demonstrated the decorative possibilities of natural forms in “The Study of the Plant and its Applications in Art Industries”, showing how plants themselves could be transformed into sophisticated designs for lace, embroidery, printed textiles, ironwork, carved wood, stained glass, porcelain and wallpaper. Learn about his style and make your own interpretation using the printmaking process called drypoint or intaglio. Group tangle from the 2012 Botangle class

Botanical Zentangle®

Based on the worldwide doodling craze called “Zentangle®” started by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas, we will learn and practice repetitive strokes that form intricate decorative botanical patterns. Learn to relax and focus as you express your style through intricate, decorative

drawings that are simple to render, but look amazing and complicated. We will practice strokes consciously and deliberately, observe botanicals and mock their natural designs to make our own “botangles” or repetitive strokes based on plants. Using keen observation and contour drawing techniques combined with ability to translate plant forms and textures into patterns you will create your own special botangle. Fee: $210 member, $265 non-member. No prerequisites.

• Fri. – Sun., Jan. 11 – 13, 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Instructor: Annie Reiser, CZT

From the 2012 Botangle class

Advanced Botanical Zentangle®

This continuation of Botanical Zentangle® aims to polish your skills of creating “botangles”: translating plant forms and textures into Zentangle-like patterns. Skills include drawing more fluid lines,

better understanding and control of light on form using line and shading, and developing botanical Zentangles with a step-out method. We will explore “tanglations” (variations of existing

tangles) and using tangles within other tangles to create new ones. You will share your new designs with classmates and we will create a small portfolio of 12 completed tangles incorporating new designs into familiar ones. Fee: $210 member, $265 non-member. Prerequisites: Entry level Zentangle®.

Gold Leaf Gilding Techniques for IlluminationThe methods of gilding used today are rooted in ancient Egypt and were later refined during the Renaissance. It is documented that gilding with gold leaf was carried

out around 3000 BCE to 2100 BCE using procedures little different from those being used today. In this two-day class, we will explore a variety of the traditional and contemporary gilding methods. Our main focus will be on acrylic mediums, including acrylic gesso, gloss and matte mediums. These non-toxic materials produce reliable results, and are probably the easiest gilding sizes available. We will also explore other options, including Jerry Tressor Gold size, gum ammoniac and even a few non-traditional methods. Each student will leave our class with a number of different samples, instructional handouts, small quantities of various gilding mediums and some patent gold leaf for further personal projects or experiments. Fee: $210 member, $265 non-member. Materials fee $30. No prerequisites.

The Belles Heures of Jean de France (1405-1408)

Art of Illumination: Belle Heures of Jean de FranceThe “Belles Heures” (1405–1408/9) of Jean de Berry, a treasure of The Cloisters collection, is one of the most celebrated and lavishly illustrated codices of the Middle Ages and it is the only manuscript executed in its entirety by the famed Limbourg brothers who were at the time of this work only between 16 and 19 years of age. The luminous scenes depicting the

legends of the saints, the Hours of the Virgin, and the like, many with elaborately designed borders, exemplify the transcendent splendor of the Limbourg brothers’ talents. After examining the literature and library resources you will be guided to develop a miniature illumination in the style of the famous Dutch miniature painters. You will work with composition techniques and create a border or frame incorporating gold gilding into the decorated border pattern. You have the possibility to apply new techniques, such as creating a parchment-look with watercolor paper or even try the real calfskin parchment. With plenty of individual guidance from an expert you’ll create an impressive Gothic miniature illumination in the style of the Limbourg brothers. Fee: $210 member, $265 non-member.
