Welcome to Sikkim.

Fair

This border state o India is located in the

majestic Himalayan Mountains. Its diversity

in geography, its ascinating culture, the

sceneries it ofers and its biodiversity make

this landlocked state a popular tourist

destination. Kanchenjunga, the worlds third

highest peak, is located on Sikkims border

with Nepal. A state majorly influenced by

Hindu and Buddhist cultures, Sikkim also

warmly embraces other religions.

Sikkims many migrants have their own

special names or this charming state. The

Tibetan name or Sikkim is Denjong, which

means valley o rice. While the Lepcha

people, the original inhabitants o Sikkim,

call it Nye-mae-el, meaning paradise. In

Hindu religious texts, Sikkim is also called

Indrakil, the garden o the war god Indra.

Sikkim with its diversity, welcomes the

adventurous and the pleasure seekers with

Nathu means "listening ears" and La means

"pass" in Tibetan. The pass is 54 km (34 mi)

east o Gangtok, the capital o Indian state

o Sikkim on JN Marg and only citizens o

India can visit the pass, ater obtaining a

permit in Gangtok. Heavy snowall makes

the roads impassable between December

and February and the pass is closed

to travellers.
