So where did all the ad cash go? ‘Hush, not now’

A city councillor’s attempt to find out exactly how $90,000 of taxpayer money was spent on an ad campaign promoting the lease and sale of city golf courses was stifled on Thurs-day.

Coun. Paula Havixbeck had hoped to bring a motion forward to the city’s finance committee, of which she is a member, but was not allowed to bring it up in new business.

Havixbeck’s motion asked for a detailed breakdown of

the campaign spending. She plans on bringing it

up at the May 29 city council meeting and expects it will be referred back to the finance committee.

The campaign, which in-cludes a website, bus boards, and print and radio ads, has ignited a firestorm at city hall.

When it was first launched, there was no indication of who was behind it. As media and councillors began inquir-ing, it was revealed the fund-ing came from the executive policy committee’s policy de-velopment and communica-tions office, which was creat-

ed as part of the 2013 budget to the tune of $722,000.

Finance committee chair Russ Wyatt said Havixbeck should have provided 24 hours notice to her fellow committee members.

The city’s report on the golf courses, which was ap-proved by the executive policy and alternate service delivery committees, recommends leasing out four courses — Kildonan Park, Windsor Park, Crescent Drive and Harbour View — and declaring a fifth, John Blumberg in Headingley, as surplus, which would bring it a step closer to being sold.

Western University’s John P. Wiebe has turned up hormones that could change the way some breast-cancer patients are treated. AngelA Mullins/Metro in london

Breast cancer. Ont. researcher explains breakthroughThe lead researcher of a West-ern University breast-cancer study says he has identified new hormones that “may sup-press breast cancer and stimu-late the regression of breast tumours.”

Prof. John P. Wiebe’s work was recently published in the Breast Cancer Research journal.

“Basically, we’ve got the first explanation of what causes receptor-negative breast can-cer,” said Wiebe, who works in

London, Ont. There are two types of breast

cancer: Receptor-negative and receptor-positive. Receptor-negative cases, which Wiebe says have the higher mortality rate of the two, do not respond to hormonal therapies such as tamoxifen. That means patients are forced into chemo or radia-tion therapy immediately.

Wiebe’s discovery, however, could turn the tide. JOhn Matisz/MetrO in LOndOn

drone strikes necessary in fight against terror: Obama

U.S. President Barack Obama on Thursday defended America’s controversial drone attacks as legal, effective and a necessary linchpin in an evolving U.S. counterterrorism policy. But he acknowledged the targeted strikes are no “cure-all” and said he is haunted by the civil-ians unintentionally killed.

The president also an-nounced a renewed push to close the Guantanamo Bay de-tention centre in Cuba, includ-ing lifting a moratorium on prisoner transfers to Yemen. However, shutting the prison will still require help from Republicans reluctant to back Obama’s call to move some de-tainees to U.S. prisons and try them in civilian courts.

Obama framed his address as an attempt to redefine the nature and scope of terror

threats facing the U.S.“Neither I, nor any

president, can promise the total defeat of terror,” Obama said in remarks at the National Defence University. “What we can do ... is dismantle networks that pose a direct danger, and make it less likely for new groups to gain a foothold.”

The highly secretive pro-gram of unmanned spy drones has faced criticism from con-gressional lawmakers who have questioned its scope and legality. the assOciated press

The federal government is threatening “retaliatory meas-ures” against the United States in a dispute over meat-label-ling rules that Ottawa and the World Trade Organization con-sider discriminatory.

The U.S. government has an-nounced new regulations on so-called country-of-origin label-ling that would track beef and hogs through the meat process-ing and distribution systems.

Canada objects to the label-ling system on the grounds that it is costly, burdensome and

will lead to the “disintegration” of the North American supply chain.

“Canada is extremely dis-appointed with the regulatory changes put forward by the United States today,” Agricul-ture Minister Gerry Ritz and Trade Minister Ed Fast said in a joint release Thursday.

“Canada will consider all op-tions at its disposal, including, if necessary, the use of retalia-tory measures,” said the gov-ernment release. The Canadian Press

Bangladesh probe faults swampy land, poor materials for collapseThe defects and errors that led to the world’s deadliest garment-industry accident ex-tend from the swampy ground the doomed Rana Plaza was built on, to “extremely poor quality” construction materi-als, to the massive, vibrating equipment operating when the eight-storey building col-lapsed, a committee appointed by Bangladesh’s government concluded.

The committee recom-mended life prison sentences

for the owners of the building and the five garment factories

that operated there, though the charges they currently face carry a maximum seven-year term. Their report, submitted to the government Wednes-day, says nothing about the role that an inadequate regula-tory system played in the April 24 collapse, which left more than 1,100 people dead.

The disaster highlighted the hazardous working condi-tions in Bangladesh’s $20-bil-lion US garment industry. The assoCiaTed Press

Take a hike, GoogleThis giant tortoise appears mightily unimpressed with the blue-headed human — a.k.a. Googler Karin Tuxen-bettman — collecting imagery with a street View Trekker at a tortoise breeding centre run by the Galapagos national Park service. Google Maps sent crews armed with backpack-mounted cameras and underwater gear to trek around the Galapagos, and the imagery will be available on street View later this year. Many of the archipelago’s volcanic islands — which inspired Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution — remain closed to tourists, so the footage will offer a first look at their natural wonders. Importers of popular electron-ics such as big-screen TVs and MP3 players are ramping up their fight against federal tariff changes, accusing the govern-ment of misleading them by offering tariff breaks that it planned to claw back later.

Importers of televisions are already on the hook for about $16 million in retroactive dut-ies from 2011 after last year’s crackdown on a particular tariff exemption that has become a political football.

Electronics brought to Can-ada under exemption 9948

are supposed to be used con-tinuously for four years while hooked up to a computer, and importers are required to pro-vide an “end-user certificate” proving that’s how each device was used.

No such end-user certifi-cates for consumer electronics exist, something officials at the Canada Border Services Agency have acknowledged in internal emails.

Now a coalition of import-

ers says it has documents that prove border officials allowed them to import products duty-free, knowing the government would claim the tariffs and pen-alty costs at a later date. The Canadian Press

electronics importers say feds duped them over tariff breaks

NDP reaction

• New Democrats, whom the Conservatives accused of planning an “iPod tax” in 2010, jumped on the latest revelations.

• “It’s now clear that despite repeated denials, the Conservatives have been meticulously planning to impose a tax on iPods and other electronic goods and apply it retroactively,” Murray Rankin, the NDP critic for national revenue, said in a release.

The flap over electronics tariffs hasalso involved iPods. On Wednesday,Finance Minister Jim Flaherty was asked at a committee hearing aboutexemptions for iPods. GeTTy imAGes File

Could crash test dummies stand in for the cast of Fast & Furious 6? HANDOUT

Richard: Mark, this is the cul-mination of the previous five. A greatest hits — literally, there are some wild crashes here — featuring characters from most of the films in the series. All the old faves are back — drug lord Braga, Hobbs and even Letty who was presumed dead in the last instalment — in a story that doesn’t make a great deal of sense, but if it was supposed to make sense it would be

called Sedans and Sensibility or maybe Of Miatas and Men. But no, this is a Fast & Furi-ous movie that plays fast and furious with believability but still delivers a pretty good time at the movies. What’s your take?

MB: SPOILER ALERT: THERE ARE CAR CRASHES IN THIS MOVIE. Richard, I’m so glad we got a sixth instalment of the franchise because somehow there were just too many unexplored nuan-ces in the first five. But if it’s action you’re after, you won’t be disappointed. You’re right; the story is secondary; in fact, almost irrelevant. But the relation-ships among the characters also seem unimportant here. There seemed to be

more emotional connec-tion in Fast and Furious 2, 3, and 5 — or was it 1, 3, and 4? Anyway, you get my point. But things certainly go boom.

RC: They sure do. The action scenes here feature the fan-ciest stunt driving this side of Evel Knievel. To quote the movie, “We’re talking ve-hicular warfare!” And that’s what people want to see from these movies. Sure the talk of friendship and loyalty is the overriding theme, but that wouldn’t mean much if cars don’t become air-borne before they burst into flames. What did you think of Vin Diesel?

MB: SPOILER ALERT: THERE ARE FIST FIGHTS IN THIS

MOVIE. Richard, Vin Diesel has less personality than some of the cars. And Paul Walker must have been cast ages ago to make him look like a trained actor. The truth is, I’d watch these movies if they used crash test dummies in the leads. The pyrotechnics are dazzling and the cars are great to look at. Toward the end of the film there’s a stunt that’s so breathtaking it tran-scends the actors involved. So Diesel is as good as the film needs him to be.

RC: I liked how every line he speaks sounds as though he’s dragging it through sand-paper.

MB: If there were ever a guy who needed auto-tune, it’s Vin Diesel.

Fast & Furious medleyNothing new. Now at the half-dozen mark, auto action series’ latest fi lm is more like a greatest hits mashup than its own creation

Comedy

The Hangover Part III

Director. Ami Ayalon, Avi Dichter

Stars. Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis

• • • • •

The first Hangover movie was a dark, hilarious look at a bachelor party gone horribly wrong. After an unfunny carbon-copy se-quel the series ends with a heist film, sans the monkey and, unfortunately, most of the laughs. This time the Wolfpack are coerced by a gangster into tracking down Mr. Chow (Ken Jeong) and gold bricks worth $21 million. Part three is as vulgar as the first two, but the story is stuck in limbo somewhere between heist flick and comedy. richard crouse

Animation

epicDirector. Chris Wedge

Stars. Colin Farrell, Josh Hutcherson

• • • • •

Parents, get ready for an epic disappointment. Though colourful and excit-ing enough for the kids, most of the celebrity cast phone in lacklustre voice performances, and the computer animation just isn’t spectacular enough to compensate. The story — about little forest people battling an evil corrupter of nature — ends up feeling like a low-rent FernGully (if you remember that one), without the environmental message. Funny guys Aziz Ansari and Jason Sudeikis stand out, and bring the only laughs for the over-10 crowd.colin mcneil

Documentary

The GatekeepersStars. Ami Ayalon, Avi

Dichter

Director. Dror Moreh

• • • • •

The Gatekeepers examines 45 years of fruitless peace-making in the Israeli-Pales-tinian conflict from those directly responsible for its security, the heads of se-cret agency Shin Bet. The Oscar foreign-language nominee certainly creates a chilling atmosphere with its secret footage and seemingly futile outlook, but ultimately that dispar-ate account leads to what may be missing in most of the movies we see that deal with the subject from a victim’s perspective. steve Gow/metro

Is World War Z worth missing a summer night for? handout

The summer movie season has begun on theatre screens across the country. September will mark the beginning of Oscar season, but from now until August our minds are free to turn to sun-bleached mush —

Metro World News in New York

What’s hot this summer

This is the End

What: The Apatow boys play “themselves” at a Hollywood party taking place during the apocalypse.

Why: Michael Cera and others get amusingly offed.

Why not: The Apatow clan has been running a bit on fumes lately. A self-referential, valedictory romp after a string of bombs seems a bit desper-ate.

The Bling Ring

What: Sofia Coppola returns with her version of a crime saga about girls, led by Emma Watson, who use the Internet to track celebrities’ where-abouts and rob their homes.

Why: Sofia Coppola has her problems, but they’re often the same as her gifts. No one makes movies like her, which is to say that no one is mak-ing films about the insularity of privilege with the actual insight into the insularity of privilege.

Why not: Paris Hilton.

Berberian Sound Studio

What: Toby Jones plays a sound designer hired by ques-tionable Italian producers to work on a “giallo” — sleazy Italian thriller film prevalent during the ’70s.

Why: Director Peter Strick-land ably captures the “giallo” mood .Why not: This isn’t for every-body. Is that a negative?

White House Down

What: Remember that movie that just came out where 1600 Pennsylvania Ave was in-vaded? This is totally different.

Why: Channing Tatum as a secret service agent.

Why not: Roland Emmerich last made a movie about how Shakespeare didn’t write the works of Shakespeare.

Much ado about nothingWhat: Hot off directing the third highest grossing film ever (The Avengers), Joss Whedon turns to Shakespeare, the second greatest writer ever (after Stan Lee, of course), with some of his usuals (Nathan Fillion, Amy Acker) filling out the Bard’s comedy of errors.

Why: Even if everyone’s terrible, it’s still Much Ado About Nothing.

Why not: Some of the cast are reportedly terrible. And even with Keanu Reeves, it would be hard to top Kenneth Branagh’s 1993 version.

sudden Impact (1983)Clint Eastwood first embodied rebel cop “Dirty” Harry Callahan. The five-film series has mostly been helmed by genre directors of varying quality. For the fourth, East-wood — a more laid-back and filmmaker — took over. The result is a slower film than the rest where Harry is unusually empathic with the murdering female character whom historically he would have gunned down. Regardless, it’s the series’ biggest grosser.

Sequels — or suck-quels — come in few flavours. Some — like Star Wars — continue a storyline; some — like Home Alone 2 — hit repeat. Others, like the James Bond and the Fast and the Furious films, help a franchise endure by adapting for the times and swapping out stars as they age or move on. Very few com-

pletely change course midstream. With The Hangover Part III not being about a hangover, we round up films that messed with the formula, and some failed. matt prIgge

Babe: pig in the city (1998)There could have easily been endless nice films about Babe, the talking pig, on his farm with other talking animals. But the first sequel killed this prospect by taking our pig into a mega-metropolis and going dementedly creepy and wonderfully dark. Parents famously freaked, and the film tanked, but most kids would adore it.

Universal soldier: Day of reckoning (2012)When few were looking, Universal Soldier — a modest hit for Jean-Claude Van Damme back in 1992 — lived on as a direct-to-video mainstay about a cyborg fighter. Anyone who caught up with its sixth entry would have been shocked to find that it barely resembles the original. Now Van Damme is the bad guy and the star is some guy (Scott Adkins) on a rou-tine revenge mission. Most different of all, this John Hyams film is very well-made and a lot of fun.

Halloween III: season of the Witch (1982)John Carpenter originally envisioned that his series would boast new villains in every film. But even though the first sequel brought back Michael Myers, the third adhered to this vision, thus confusing everyone when the baddie turned out to be 62-year-old Dan O’Herlihy, playing the owner of a Halloween costume manufacturer hell-bent on domination.

evil Dead 3 - army of Darkness (1992)Evil Dead goes medieval! Bruce Campbell’s Ash, the survivor of The Evil Dead and its comic sequel/sorta-remake, was suddenly whisked to the Middle Ages for no reason other than, “Wouldn’t that be kind of awesome if a gorefest series did that?”

Rucker rides Wagon Wheel to top of the country music charts

Darius Rucker is a fan of Old Crow Medicine Show, but says he didn’t really get what was so infectious about the string band’s signature hit Wagon Wheel at first.

Then he heard the faculty band at his daughter’s school play the song and it all start-ed to open up for him.

“I’m sitting there listening to it and I say to myself what I always say to myself, ‘I want to cut this song,’” Rucker said.

“I say it all the time but I never end up cutting any-thing. But with this song it was, ‘All right, let’s try it.’ I didn’t know how big it was until after I cut it, until after it was a single. I didn’t know that every college student south of the Mason-Dixon Line in the last eight years knows this song. I had no idea. I thought it was just another Old Crow song until I recorded it and realized it wasn’t just another Old Crow song.”

So far, Rucker’s version of Wagon Wheel is the most successful song of his country career. The cut from his third Nashville-recorded album, True Believers, out this week, has sold nearly 1.2 million copies and sat atop the coun-try charts for three consecu-tive weeks earlier this year. The AssociATed Press

Old Crow

It’s another interesting chapter in the history of a song that’s slowly working its way toward American classic status.

• Popular. It’s now a pop song with a long back story that tantalizingly trickles out before you reach the wellspring.

Michael Douglas as Liberace and Matt Damon as Scott Thorson in a scene from Behind the Candelabra. handout

Michael Douglas taking on the face of Liberace’s lifestyle

Michael Douglas shared his thoughts on Liberace and Steven Soderbergh as his film Behind the Candelabra is set to air on HBO Canada this Sunday.

On his memories of LiberaceI met him once, briefly, when I was 12. At the time, my father (Kirk Douglas) owned

a house in Palm Springs, close to Lee Liberace’s home. One sunny day, this Rolls Royce stopped in front of the house and Lee stepped out. He was wearing lots of gold and the sunlight was reflect-ing off his jewelry... He was a sort of pre-Elton John. He invited that style. He was a charming man.

On Soderbergh’s offerIn 2001, when we were filming Traffic, Steven (Soderbergh) asked me, ‘Have you ever thought of doing something about Liberace?’ I wondered how that char-acter could possibly make him think of me… I was a bit paranoid at the time, so I tried to thank him and slip away!

“But then, years later, Steven came across this book, Behind the Candel-abra. Richard LaGravenese, the scriptwriter, showed it to Matt Damon, telling him he would be (Liberace’s lover) Scott (Thorson) and I, Lib-erace. This happened right after my cancer, and offering me this role was a great gift. I will be eternally grateful to Matt and Steven for waiting until I got better.”

Interview. The Traffic actor plays eccentric pianist Liberace in Steven Soderbergh’s flashy biopic Behind the Candelabra

Kristen Stewart

Stewart wasn’t so Swi to seek out Taylor’s sympathy

OK, so maybe Kristen Stewart didn’t seek breakup advice from Taylor Swift after all. Despite reports earlier this week, sources insist to E! News that the Twilight ac-tress did not in fact hightail

it to Swift’s Beverly Hills home in the wake of her split from Robert Pattinson. “They know each other and they are friends, but they didn’t see each other,” a source says of the young women.

Moore than a number: Would you

ask the men these

questions?Julianne Moore is getting tired of the double standard for women when it comes to getting older in Hollywood. “Men aren’t asked about age. Men aren’t asked about their children,” she tells DuJour magazine. “Not that these things aren’t important, but I do feel like it becomes reduc-tive when a woman’s life becomes, ‘Talk to me about your kids and how you feel about plastic surgery.’” Still, Moore doesn’t want to sound like she’s complaining, as she’s thrilled to have had the

career she’s already had: “If I saw myself sitting here at 52, talking about my career and how I’ve been doing it for the last 30 years, I’d be like, ‘Are you kidding me? It happened?’”

Amanda Bynes

Bynes boils over allegedly altered photos

Amanda Bynes is not happy with how In Touch Weekly has been portraying her, and who can blame her when the cover story on her gets a “De-stroyed by fame” headline? But that’s not why Bynes is up in arms. The magazine apparently used “fake altered photos” with the story “be-cause they f—ing hate me,” Bynes explained on Twitter. (The magazine also claimed

to have photos taken inside Bynes’ New York City apart-ment.)

“They used an old shot of me on the cover with a bad angle of my old nose before I had surgery to reshape my profile and to remove the webbing from my eyes,” Bynes tweeted. “I have to sue because that’s not my apartment, those aren’t my clothes!”

Top chefs share their ideas for making over everyone’s favourite build-it-yourself meal

Taco, the next generation

Cali VegetarianSanta-Barbara-based food and garden blogger Valerie Rice (Eat Drink Garden) uses lentils as the base for her taco, simmering them with tomato, garlic, red pepper, and a dash each of cumin and smoked paprika. The lentils get packaged in a soft corn tortilla and topped with items such as roasted tomatillo salsa and guacamole. “My first go-round with these I wasn’t sure how it would go over with my meat-loving hus-band and sometimes picky daughters,” Rice wrote in an email. “But they were a total hit and now are part of our dinnertime rotation.”

Persian-InspiredToss shredded chicken in a sauce of pomegranate mo-lasses, lime juice and honey. Stuff the meat into a taco shell (or wrap it in a flour tortilla or even Middle East-ern flatbread) and top with yogurt, fresh basil, mint, scallions, tomato, cucumber and plenty of sumac. “This is a classic combination of Persian ingredients,” Louisa Shafia, author of The New Persian Kitchen, wrote in an email. “Crushed purple sumac berries are tart and salty and a must have for conjuring the authentic flavour of Middle Eastern cuisine.”

Pig-in-a-TacoStick a pork tenderloin in the slow cooker until it practically melts, suggests Marie Simmons, author of the new cookbook, Taste of Honey. Shred the meat, then toss it with a sweet-spicy barbecue sauce made by simmering honey, chipotle peppers packed in adobo sauce, ketchup, soy sauce, cumin, chili powder, garlic and a swig of cider vinegar for about 10 minutes, or until thick. Top the taco with avocado, thinly sliced radishes and a shredded jicama-and-carrot slaw dressed with chopped cilantro and lime juice.

Steak House Season a flat-iron steak with salt and pepper, then sear it on the grill, suggests Washington, D.C. chef Spike Mendel-sohn, who plans to open a steak frites restaurant called Bearnaise this summer. Wrap thin slices of the steak and pickled red onions inside a soft corn taco and serve with warm bearnaise sauce for dipping. “I love the idea of eating a steak without sharpening my knives,” Mendelsohn said via email. Counting calories

I never thought I’d see the day when calorie-counting would be the latest wine trend.

After all, the belly-expanding issue with booze comes from its sugar and alcohol. Wines tend to have low quantities of both, with the average white or red containing about 140 cal-ories per five ounce glass.

I guess when you’re watching your weight even that can equal lots of squats. Who came to the rescue? Why, a former real housewife of New York City.

Bethenny Frankel, real-ity star and business mogul, started her Skinnygirl line of adult beverages so she could enjoy a guilt-free Mar-garita. After her company sold for bags of dough, the concept was unleashed on wine lovers.

At 100 calories per five ounce serving, the Skin-nygirl 2011 California Red ($14.99) hasn’t downplayed the alcohol (a respectable 12 per cent) in its freshly crushed blackberry fruit flavour that ends with a bright, juicy finish.

While it’s a chillable red that will match with most summer-time menus, the skinny on this girl is that she may taste best all by herself. PRICES REFLECT THE RANGE ACROSS THE COUNTRY. SOME PRODUCTS MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE IN ALL PROVINCES.
