Gospel John 9:1-41

As [Jesus] walked along, he saw a manblind from birth. 2His disciples asked him,"Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his par-ents, that he was born blind?" Jesus an-swered, "Neither this man nor his parentssinned; he was born blind so that God'sworks might be revealed in him. aWe mustwork the works of him who sent me whileit is day; night is coming when no one canwork. 5As long as I am in the world, I arnthe light of the world." 6When he had said

this, he spat on the ground and mademud with the saliva and spread the mudon the man's eyes, Tsaying to him, 'Go,wash in the pool of Siloam" (which meansSent). Then he went and washed andcame back able to see. 8The neighborsand those who had seen him before as abeggar began to ask, "Is this not the manwho used to sit and beg?" eSome were say-ing, "It is he." Others were saying, "No, butit is someone like him." He kept saying, "I

am the man.' roBut they kept asking hirn,"Then how were your eyes opened?' lrHeanswered, 'The man called Jesus mademud, spread it on my eyes, and said to me,'Go to Siloam and wash.' Then I went andwashed and received my sight." 12They

said to him, "Where is he?" He said, "I donot know."

rsThey brought to the Pharisees theman who had formerly been blind. IaNow

it was a sabbath day whenJesus made themud and opened his eyes. l5Then thePharisees also began to ask him how hehad received his sight. He said to them,"He put mud on rny eyes. Then I washed, and now I see.' roSome of the Phariseessaid, *This man is not from God, for hedoes not observe the sabbath." But otherssaid, 'How can a man who is a sinner per-form such signs?" And they were divided.tTSo they said again to the blind man,"What do you say about him? It was youreyes he opened." He said, *ffe is a proph-et."

lsTheJews did not believe that he hadbeen blind and had received his sight untilthey called the parents of the man whohad received his sight reand asked them,"Is this your son, who you say was bornbtind? How then does he now see?" 20His

parents answered, "We know that this isour son, and that he was born blind; 2rbut

we do not know how it is that now he sees, nor do we knowwho opened his eyes. Askhim; he is of age. He will speak for him-self." 22His parents said this because theywere afraid of theJews; for theJews hadalready agreed that anyone who confessed

Jesus to be the Messiah would be put outof the synagogue. 23Therefbre his parentssaid, "He is of age; ask him."

2aSo for the second time they called theman who had been blind, and they said

to him, 'Give glory to God! We know thatthis rnan is a sinner.o ?5FIe answered, 'Ido not know whether he is a sinner- Onething I do know, tJlat though I was blind, now I see." 26They said to him, "Whatdid he do to you? How did he open youreyes?" 27FIe answered them, "I have toldyou already, and you would not listen. Whydo you want to hear it again? Do you alsowant to become his disciples?" 28Then

they reviled him, saying, *You are his dis-ciple, but we are disciples of Moses. 2eWe

know that God has spoken to Moses, butas for this man, we do not know where hecomes from." mThe man answered,'ffereis an astonishing thing! You do not knowwhere he comes from, and yet he openedmy eyes. 3rWe know that God does not lis-ten to sinners, but he does listen to onewho worships hirn and obeys his will.5T.{ever since the world began has it beenheard that anyone opened the eyes ofaperson born blind. 33If this man were notfrom God, he could do nothing.'84Theyanswered him, *You were born entirely insins, and are you trFlng to teach us?" Andthey drove him out.

3Jesus heard that they had driven himout, and when he found him, he said, *Do

you trelieve in the Son of Man?" 56fle an-swered, *And who is he, sir? Tell me, so thatI may believe in him." Jesus said to him,"You have seen him, and the one speakingwith you is he." sHe said, *Lord, I believe."And he worshiped him. Jesus said, "Icame into this world forjudgment so thatthose who do not see may see, and thosewho do see may becorne blind." aoSome ofthe Pharisees near him heard this and saidto him, *Surely we are not blind, are we?"aJesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would not have sin. But now that yousay, 'We see,n your sirt remains.'
