TIDEWATER KNITTING GUILD OF VIRGINIA March 2014 A message from our president WOW! I was running through my mind everything the Guild has on the calendar for March, and we are going to be busy. Starting with our Guild meeting on March 3, the program is making a knitted bunny from a square. The pattern is on Ravelry (Knitted Bunny by [email protected]); however, the important point is that if you want to participate in the program you need to come with a knitted six-inch square. We also will be doing a brown bag exchange. For those that want to participate, put a skein of yarn in a brown lunch bag and at the meeting all the bags will be put on a table and you will randomly pick one. The idea is for you to knit something incorporating the yarn in the bag you picked and present your project, such as a derby hat, at the May meeting. I will have extra bags at the meeting. You need to provide the yarn and creativity. At the end of the week we are headed to Corolla, N.C., for our annual retreat. The committee has finalized the plans and I think we are ready. Though there is a lot of instruction scheduled for the weekend, there is plenty of social and knit time as well. Check your email for a listing of homework and class supplies and don’t forget your flower. It will be a nice getaway weekend and I can’t wait. The following weekend (March 14-16) we have the Spring Craft Fair at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. Check the signup schedule at the March meeting and try to give a couple hours. Volunteers will get in free, and you’ll have the opportunity to walk around and see all the vendors and other guilds. After all that, I don’t know about you, but I am going to be ready for a little break. Would this be a bad time to mention that I am still looking for help with the Scavenger Hunt at the end of May? Charity Knitting: Organizations to knit/crochet for in 2014 By Chris Goudeau ! We have several organizations that we can knit/crochet for this year: !• Birthright of Norfolk provides help for pregnant women. They will accept any baby items:

blankets, sweaters, hats, booties, etc. !• Lighthouse Center at the Oceanfront. This organization provides day services for the homeless.

They need blankets, hats, mittens, etc., as well as toiletry items.!• Samaritan House. This is a domestic violence shelter for women and children. They would like

hats, scarves, cowls, slippers for the women, as well as their children. This organization will be our focus for the year.!

! Please bring your items to be donated locally to the next meeting and we’ll see that they are distributed. If you have items that you have given to an out-of-town charity, you should notate that on the charity log. Remember to sign the charity knitting log each month when you attend our meetings or email me at [email protected]. Thank you.!!From the knitter’s bookshelf: The Knitting Series, by Maggie Sefton By Molly Larson This is a delightful series of mysteries revolving around a young woman who has inherited a beloved relative’s house immediately next door to a innovative yarn shop. Our heroine, Kelly Flynn, is a successful financial consultant who at first figures she will clean out the house and sell it so she can return to her career. On learning that her aunt was likely murdered and not an accident victim, Kelly is intent on solving the mystery. The nearby yarn shop, The House Of Lambspun, and its regular knitters and spinners help Kelly unravel the crime.! There currently are nine books in the series. Each is suspenseful and informative about knitting skills and has just enough romance to sweeten the story. These books are in the Virginia Beach Public Library Overdrive (eBooks) catalog and one can sample at least one book without any expense.!!Looking for a fiber festival? Check out the comprehensive schedule at http://www.knittersreview.com/upcoming_events.asp.!

It's appropriate that March is known for coming in like a lamb and going out like a lion, because it's the month when all the new spring and summer yarns start arriving. This season's yarns promise to delight and tantalize. New from Reywa is Bloom, a lace weight with 50 percent yak down and 50 percent silk. There are eight great colors and natural. There are two new yarns from Isager: Alpaca Merino 2 and Plant Fibre, both fingering weights. Made in Peru, Alpaca Merino 2 is 50 percent baby alpaca and 50 percent merino, with 270 yards. Plant

Fibre, from Italy, is 70 percent ramie, 15 percent bamboo, and 15 percent hemp, with 165 yards. I'll be stocking an independent dyer from New Mexico, you can check out Wooly Wonka on Ravelry to get a preview of all of her yarns. I'll have Ceridwen Sock, Aerten Sock and Freya DK. I'm starting with 17 of her colorways. Lucci Yarns from New York will be sending Iris, Mini Magic, and Lucatape. The Loom, in Bangkok, creates a 100 percent silk yarn with a matte, raw texture. The sport weight yarn uses a size 3 to 5 needle and will have 164 yards, retailing at $8.50. I can't wait to knit a summer accessory with it. Also arriving will be new yarns from Juniper Moon Farm, Noro, Louisa Harding, Tahki Stacy Charles, Cascade and Classic Elite.
