Montgomery’s is a long-standing South Dakota tradition, founded in 1888, by George Montgomery in Alexandria,

South Dakota. Over the years, it has remained in the care of Montgomery family members. Growth in the business took Montgomery’s to area towns; first to Howard in 1962. That store was moved to Madison in 1980.

Current owners Clark and Connie Sinclair established the Sioux Falls location in 1997, and the company also has a third store in Watertown.

All three locations of Montgomery’s offer complete design centers with everything from furniture, mattresses and accessories to flooring and window treatments. They also offer

complimentary in-home design service. The Sioux Falls location alone has at least 20 designers on the team who are eager to help bring their customers’ ideas to life.

They feel that by offering a unique selection of quality products, top notch customer service and fashion forward styles, Montgomery’s is big enough to excite their customer base, but not too big to be able to evolve and change. They have a commitment to keeping up with the latest trends, styles and colors, as well as continually updating their vast showroom floor to highlight a variety of styles ranging from traditional to contemporary.

The sheer size of the new expansion may seem a bit overwhelming at first, but the friendly staff will help you navigate

through living room settings, bedroom furniture, dining room options, a huge selection of area rugs or whatever else you might be looking for.

The expansion has allowed them to provide a large area devoted to contemporary styles. According to the designers, customers have said for quite some time that they were looking for contemporary styles in this area, but weren’t really finding what they desired. Now, though, they have it with Montgomery’s Modern.

Montgomery’s has also added a lighting area to showcase the many beautiful styles in lighting options that they offer. Pendants, chandeliers, modern, traditional…they have it all!

Mattress 1st is their new mattress department, with over 40 beds on display including the full line of iComfort and iSeries mattresses by Serta and beds from Tempurpedic and Aireloom. They offer a 365-night sleep guarantee along with a 30 day price match. Their experienced sleep specialists will help you find the bed that fits your personal needs and preferences and one you’ll love for years to come.

Whether you’re a diva looking for accessories with “bling” or more of a down-home type who appreciates rustic wood and rawhide, Montgomery’s has something for you. The company prides itself on providing a diverse collection of accessories, many one of a kind, to help you finish your room. They carry one

of the largest selections of unique accessories in the area and are constantly renewing the selection. You’ll find everything from an antique-look clock, wall sconces, watercolor paintings, pop art or even a unicorn head to enhance your space. And, as you wander through the store, you may see a wall color or finish that you like. Anticipating customers’ questions, Montgomery’s provide small signs with the exact wall color displayed in that area of the showroom so you can take note of it.

The flooring department is located on an upper level and is filled with flooring options from well-known companies like Karastan, Shaw and Mannington. Here you’ll find a huge selection of quality carpet, beautiful hardwood, laminate, tile and faux tile options.

A grand staircase from the upper level brings you down to the new Design Center, with walls and walls of books holding fabric samples. Here you’ll find custom fabrics and leathers to choose from to personalize your new sofa or chair, wood samples for case goods, books with fabrics and trims for window treatments or custom bed coverings and even wallpaper books.

The rest of the room contains several high glass tables and stools to provide space to ponder your choices and work with a designer to pull it all together.

Whether you have a design scheme in mind or not, the talented designers take time to sit down with you and listen to your likes and dislikes. They will even visit your home to get a feel for your style – and your lifestyle – to help you pick the perfect furniture,

lighting, window coverings and more.Do you like clean lines with a contemporary look, perhaps

in whites, greys and metals? They can do that. Prefer a more traditional look with wood, upholstered fabrics and warm lighting? They can do that, too.

Every department at Montgomery’s allows customers the chance to indulge their own inner designer and customize their selections.

Companies like Simply Amish are featured at the store, with the chance to hand-pick your wood and stain color and then add hardware, fabric and other options to create everything from cupboards to bedroom sets.

If you want to design your own furniture settings, companies like Flexsteel, Huntington House, Bernhardt and lots more have a menu of design options to choose from. Options may include arm styles, seat cushion and back cushion style, leg styles and of course fabrics, trim and wood.

Montgomery’s Furniture is an authorized Hunter Douglas dealer for window coverings and offers a full-service drapery department to help with everything from free measuring and price quotes to professional installation. They even have a Drapery Workroom where expert seamstresses create custom draperies, bed coverings, bench cushions, cornice boxes and pillows.

When customers come to Montgomery’s, says Sinclair, they can expect not only exceptional customer service, but also

exceptional value.Montgomery’s is a member of Furniture First, which is the

nation’s largest furniture buying group with over 375 member stores. When you couple this buying power with the numerous market buying trips their team travels to each year, Montgomery’s is confident they can provide the best values in home furnishings every day.

Over the last year, Montgomery’s celebrated its 126th anniversary. With family members and staff who are personally invested in providing excellent service and high quality furnishings, they are already dreaming of what the next 126 years will bring.

If your trips to the Black Hills of South Dakota usually include a stop at Prairie Berry Winery in Hill City, you can now sip, savor

and enjoy all the flavors of their wines close to home, at Prairie Berry East Bank.

Located in the East Bank area near downtown, the business opened this summer to bring all the great tastes of Prairie Berry to the Sioux Falls area.

“We really appreciate the support for Prairie Berry from residents across the state,” says owner Sandi Vojta. “It is exciting for us to have this opportunity to expand our business to Sioux Falls. The East Bank is just the right location for us.”

Sandi is a fifth generation winemaker (hence the name of their wine club, Generation 5). Back in 1876, Sandi’s Great-Great Grandma Anna Pesä Vojta, who had emigrated to the United States from Moravia, Czechoslovakia with her husband Jon, first made wine from the “prairie berries” she found growing in Dakota Territory. Today, Sandi incorporates those passed-down family recipes to handcraft Prairie Berry Winery’s award-winning wines.

etc. for her | October 2014 17

There are many other ways the past is connected to the present at Prairie Berry. One line of wines is named for Sandi’s Great-Great Grandmother – the Anna Pesä Zinfandel, Anna Pesä Cabernet Sauvignon and the Anna Pesä Chardonnay.

And then there is the actual location of the business in the historic Frank Transfer & Storage building, which is also now home to Queen City Bakery and residential lofts. The wood floors, stone walls and high ceilings create a beautiful environment to grab a seat at the Fermentation Bar for a glass of wine or a pint of craft beer from their Black Hills Miner Brewing Company, which Prairie Berry added to their business last year.

“It has been a lot of fun adding the beers to our offerings,” says Sandi. “We produce all of them in small, 15-barrel fermenters, allowing us to keep each batch small enough to maintain microbrew quality and a close attention to detail.”

If you have trouble making up your mind from the ample craft beer and wine selections, you can sample several of them as a flight. Prairie Berry Winery is the first winery in the state to offer wine on tap, and growler fills are available for those who want to take the Miner Brewing craft beer experience home with them.

Here are just a few wine and beer descriptions to tempt your taste buds:

• Red Ass Rhubarb (Prairie Berry’s most award-winning wine) – A semi-sweet rhubarb/raspberry wine. Serve lightly chilled.

• Lawrence Elk – A semi-sweet black currant wine. Serve lightly chilled.

• 3Rednecks Cabernet Sauvignon – A dry cabernet sauvignon best served at a cool room temperature.

• Pheasant Reserve – Merlot and chokecherries play well together in this South Dakota take on a traditional European wine. A dry wine best served at a cool room temperature.

• Miner Irish Red Ale – A fine creamy head highlights toasted barley and caramel notes with a soft, hoppy finish.

• Miner Wheat – Made with South Dakota-grown wheat from Brewmaster Sandi’s cousin Leo. Rich, hazy, honey tone with a mousse-like head and persistent lacing. Young banana and clove are highlighted by a hint of citrus in the finish.

• Miner Oatmeal Stout – A fine toffee-colored head tops a deep molasses-toned brew. Delivers flavors of espresso, bittersweet cocoa and a bright hoppiness. A creamy body is enhanced to velvet by being pushed through a nitrogen tap.

Whatever your flavor preference is, they’ll have a wine or craft beer to make you happy.

The Generation 5 Wine Club offers three membership options. Individuals can choose to join the Legacy Cru, which has added exclusive benefits, or the Cellar Cru, where you can join as either a Dry or Sweet member. The wines that Gen5 wine club members receive are hand-selected by Sandi and are specifically tailored to the Cru level you select. The Gen5 wine club also organizes yearly events and offers special discounts.

Prairie Berry East Bank’s Epicurean Bar is set to open this fall and will showcase select cheeses, sliced meats and fresh baked bread. Each day, they will feature a wine and cheese or craft beer and cheese pairing, along with other tasty items.

After you’ve discovered your favorites at the Fermentation Bar

or Epicurean Bar, be sure to stop by the Marketplace for bottled wines or South Dakota-inspired gourmet goods, like a jar of Prairie Berry’s own Red Ass Jam or Kick Ass Compote.

POET-DSM Advanced Biofuels, LLC, a joint venture of Royal DSM and POET, LLC, proved its revolutionary technology

that converts agricultural residue into renewable fuel at the Grand Opening of its first commercial cellulosic ethanol plant in Emmetsburg, Iowa, in September.

The plant, named “Project LIBERTY,” was formally opened in the presence of His Majesty Willem-Alexander, King of the Netherlands, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, Deputy Under Secretary Michael Knotek of the Department of Energy, Governor Terry Branstad and Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds of Iowa, other dignitaries and thousands of guests.

Project LIBERTY converts baled corn cobs, leaves, husk and stalk into renewable fuel. The plant has now officially started up, processing its first batch of biomass into cellulosic ethanol and is moving forward toward continuous operation. At full capacity, it will convert 770 tons of biomass per day to produce

ethanol at a rate of 20 million gallons per year, later ramping up to 25 million gallons per year.

“Some have called cellulosic ethanol a ‘fantasy fuel,’ but today it becomes a reality,” said Jeff Broin, POET Founder and Executive Chairman. “With access now to new sources for energy, Project LIBERTY can be the first step in transforming our economy, our environment and our national security.”

This first commercial-scale cellulosic ethanol facility marks a huge step forward in the wider adoption of biofuels, both in North America and elsewhere. It is also a victory for the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), which prompted increased investment into advanced biofuels that accelerated development of this new technology. The RFS is a critical tool in moving the U.S. beyond 10 percent ethanol use to allow this new technology to expand to other parts of the country.

Lori and Butch Oseby grew up in the same town, knowing of each other, or at least knowing siblings of each other. As they

got older, each got married and started a family. However, life is full of ups and downs and twists and turns, and

both of them ended up single again and reconnected at The Crow Bar in Sioux Falls.

“I actually stood him up the first time he asked me out,” Lori recalls laughing. “But, thankfully, I got a second chance. He asked me to dinner and invited me to see his place, so our first date was going to Roskens Pizza/Critters (just across the street from his house) and taking pizza home to enjoy in his little living room sitting by the wood-burning stove.”

Nine years of marriage later, that wood-burning stove is still

there. In fact, two wood-burning stoves supply the majority of their home’s heat.

This is no ordinary home, though. The building’s first use was the small town lumber business in the 1930s. Butch and a friend opened a storage business there in the 1990s, and that’s also when Butch moved in, using a small part of the building for living space and the rest for….well….his “finds” that he has collected over the years.

From his work in construction, rock and gravel and cleaning up around farms, Butch has amassed a wealth of items that would raise the eyebrows of the guys from American Pickers.

“At first, I think my friends thought I was crazy moving out here,” says Lori, admitting she was a bit more of a “city girl.”

“But, it has been so much fun living here in a small town and traveling around to different places with Butch – antique stores or just finding things along the road.”

The couple embarked on a remodeling project about three

years ago in the front of the house. Although everything from the interior walls to the wood beams overhead was created new, every bit of it looks like it could be original to the building.

The front room is a warm, inviting space. Literally warm, as

the other wood-burning stove is there. An old root beer keg and metal Hamm’s beer cooler sit side by side. A pop art image of John Lennon hangs above the arched entryway by a hand painted peace sign and one word: Imagine.

Could This Change The Way You Bank?

Down a short hall is the “new” bedroom, with an arched doorway but no door and walls that don’t go all the way to the ceiling, leaving the hand-made wood beams exposed up above.

“I remember coming home one day,” says Lori, “and the guys were just beating the tar out of these boards. They distressed and stained them to give them that old look that fits with everything else here.”

Most of the furniture pieces in the bedroom were finds from one place or another. Some of it was even “rediscovered” when Lori and her sister went hunting through the storage area in the back part of the building. An old photo of Lori’s great-grandmother hangs near the bed, helping to connect the past and present and highlight the old-meets-new charm of the house.

The Osebys covered the cement floor with wood laminate and added coils in the bathroom floor to create a little more warmth.

Lori admits the bathroom is one of her favorite spots in the home, with its sunken jacuzzi tub and walk-in shower. A custom-built curved wall made of glass blocks and tile frames the shower. Every glass block came from Butch’s storage area.

A farmhouse style kitchen cabinet, which is new but looks old, serves as the vanity with his-and-hers stainless sinks and fixtures. In the corner of the bathroom above the tub hangs an old pharmacy sign, dated 1841, that says, “Frederick Dutcher Druggist. Fine Toilet Goods.”

The Osebys also added a new main floor laundry room, with plenty of storage including built in cubbies and hanging racks. Even this space features some of Butch’s collectible tin pieces and old advertisements hanging on the walls.

A small room connects the updated front of the house to the back. This room is filled with antique toys, like an old pedal plane, crayon-created pictures from their grandchildren, a penny “select-o-vend” candy machine and a huge wood table with drawers that Butch thinks came from an old school or library. Not one to overpay for his finds, Butch admits laughing, he recalls that he paid “about 30 bucks” to take that off someone’s hands.

Off to the right from this room, you can see into the extensive storage space that is part of the building. It’s a collection of furniture, tools, bicycles, an enormous old Hamm’s beer billboard from a South Dakota highway and posters from Crazy Horse. These posters are likely pre-1950s, depicting what the monument would one day look like. Lori and Butch had met the Ziolkowski family through mutual friends, so when they stumbled upon the poster during a trip to the Deadwood area, Butch knew they had to have it.

Going back into the house, you arrive in a space that requires just a minute – or two – to let it all sink in.

“Butch calls this his 401K room,” laughs Lori. This room used to be the lumber storage and pick-up area,

complete with a sloped incline where cars would drive through to pick up their lumber. To try to describe it in a few written words does not do it justice.

Beer signs, Nascar signs and arcade games...glass cases of antique toys...political memorabilia...glassware...historical artwork....in other words, the mother lode for a “picker.”

“This represents about 40 years of collecting,” says Butch. “I have done carpentry work here, and I have put this collection of

Page 42: 2014 10 etcmagazine volume13 issue11

things together. I guess this is art in a sense, and this room in particular is my canvas.”

This area of the house also includes the kitchen, dining area, a lofted bedroom (which had been “the” bedroom until the new addition a few years ago)….and the little living room where Lori and Butch had their first pizza dinner together.

“There was no kitchen here when we first dated,” says Lori. “Butch had a microwave and that’s about it. He used the bathroom sink to wash his dishes.”

Butch put his construction skills to work, creating a new kitchen that looks old. He hand-pieced boards together to create cabinet doors. What used to be an old parts counter is now a

“real” kitchen sink. The couple has paired an antique icebox with a cabinet with punched-tin doors they found at Alco in Lead, SD. Along the outside wall is a long counter covered with aluminum and finished with copper nails to make it look old – another of Butch’s creations. He also built cabinets below the counter for additional storage.

An old milk glass cake plate sits on the counter, and large red letters spelling E A T hang above it. The building didn’t have windows on this wall originally, so they put some in, along with brickwork on the walls.

A large S&H Green Stamps sign covers the back side of the stove so that it isn’t visible from the dining space, which is comprised

of a diner-style laminate top table and orange-cushioned chairs. It’s no surprise that family, friends and neighbors like to gather

here. From Butch’s days long ago working at Woodlake Fitness Center (teaching aerobics), he collected a cabinet from the center’s old snack bar with a working beer tap. That sits next to the pinball machine, stereo and nostalgic bowling game with the steel puck

and the hanging pins that flip up when you slide the puck down the lane. Butch thinks the bowling game was from the 1930s.

maps – the kind that used to hang in classrooms.A long metal staircase takes you up to the lofted room with

Butch and Lori created a patio area out back with a fire pit, hot tub and grill area. They enjoy sitting out back there together or

with friends and look out into the rural farm fields or watch a train pass by just a stone’s throw away.

Life has ups and downs and twists and turns....and the latest curve in the Osebys’ journey has been Butch’s cancer diagnosis. This couple is resilient and faith-filled, but they are also pragmatic. They know their current space is too big for them to take care of

now, so they are preparing to move to a smaller house – and to auction off a great deal of their collection. Sticky notes identify the most special items that will make the move.

A rather poignant stop along the tour was the top of the loft staircase where there are a couple of old pictures from Arnold’s Park in Okoboji, Iowa, including one featuring the old wooden

roller coaster as it enjoyed its final season at the park The caption reads, “The End of an Era.”

Their upcoming move is an end of an era for Butch and Lori, but their positive outlook and their love of a good find is sure to set the stage for a new blank canvas on which they can celebrate both the past and each day forward.

My beloved and I eat restaurant food way more than normal people. Not just fine dining, but takeout, delivery, fast

food, slow food, you name it. And in my career, I work with many restaurants doing advertising and marketing for all sorts of eateries. A big chunk of my business comes from the hospitality industry. Between my work and our dining habits, I talk to a lot of restaurant owners and workers. Lately, my conversations with them tend to end up on the same topic, not what to eat but the need for more good employees. At a pizza place near my office, I saw a sign on the door saying they needed to hire wait staff and kitchen help. Reader boards all over town say “NOW HIRING” or “HELP WANTED.” Restaurants all need more employees.

So why the shortage of restaurant workers? I think there are a couple of factors that contribute to the problem. First, our city is blessed with a darned good economy. When a hard

recession crippled most of the country, Sioux Falls didn’t get hit nearly as badly as many areas. Our unemployment rate grew, but nowhere near the levels of Detroit or Las Vegas. In June of 2014, our unemployment rate was a low 3.2%. Compare that to our neighbors in Sioux City at 4.5% or Omaha at 4.2%, and you start to see how a shortage of employees can happen. As the job market rebounds, opportunities for people to switch jobs to get an increase in wages become common. Add in growth of major job sectors, like healthcare and financial services, and the competition for workers here is getting fierce.

Another reason? We have a LOT of restaurants. The Sioux Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau claims 650 eateries in Sioux Falls, so we’ll go with that number (even though the city health department inspects more than 700.) With the metro area population at about 230,000 that gives our fair city about 28

There were many nights tending bar when I would bring home well over a hundred dollars in tips, in addition to my wages. And that was 30 years ago; trust me, that was great

money for a college student back in the ‘80s.

establishments for every 10,000 people. Is that a lot? Yes. For comparison, New York City has about 20 restaurants per 10,000 humans, San Francisco has about 21, and Chicago only 16. When you have that many restaurants competing for the same cooks and servers, a shortage can develop. When a new restaurant comes to town, they start to cannibalize staff from other places. A vicious cycle begins.

Is there an upside to this problem? Yes, opportunity. With so many jobs open an eager employee can find a great job in the service industry. If you’re a mom looking to pick up a part-time job while the kids are at school, there are restaurants looking for people like you to work the lunch shift. Want a second job to put a little extra money away? No problem. There are lots of places that would let you pick up a few extra shifts. Are your kids looking for work? Great jobs are waiting for them and it is fantastic experience. Many of my best employees at the ad agency have worked as waiters or waitresses in the past; I think it’s a good background. It builds customer service and communication skills and teaches you how to think on your feet. If you can deal with drunken hungry customers at three in the morning, the challenges we face every day are a piece of cake.

I worked my way through college with a variety of food service jobs. I was a bartender, a short-order cook, did kitchen prep and even spent some time making fried chicken and a vast array of salads behind the deli counter at a HyVee store. I understand that working in a kitchen or serving customers can be hard work, but I also know it can be very rewarding. It’s great to see a happy customer scarfing down the meal you just made. It is immensely satisfying to put out several plates of food at the same time, with a dozen eggs cooked differently; each plate with the right combination of sausages, toast and scrambled or over-easy. And I must say, the money is pretty good too. There were many nights tending bar when I would bring home well over a hundred dollars in tips, in addition to my wages. And that was 30 years ago; trust me, that was great money for a college student back in the ‘80s.

This isn’t a problem we can solve overnight, but it does make me appreciate the people all over Sioux Falls who do great work making and serving food, and it makes me think I should stop to say thanks to those folks more often than I do. And the next time I hear someone whining about there not being any good jobs out there, I’ll probably get on my soapbox and tell them to get off their butt and go apply for a job at just about any of the 600-plus food establishments here in town, because most of them are looking to hire. Who knows, I might even have to tie on an apron and help out in the kitchen.

Do yourself a favor, eat something good today.

While he’s no longer working as a short-order cook, Jim’s company ADwërks handles the marketing and advertising for dozens of restaurants in the upper Midwest.

“THE WAR” took six years of research through films, photographs, interviews and documents to tell the tale of “The Greatest Generation.”

Discover why KEN BURNS chose Luverne, MN as one of the four communities featured in his 2007 epic documentary that told the story of WWII both at home and abroad!

The HERREID MILITARY MUSEUM picks up the story where the documentary left off! Luverne native Quentin Aanenson served as a P-37 fighter pilot during the war. His story, featured in Burns’ documentary, and the story of countless other Rock County veterans who served from the Civil War through WWII are detailed in the

museum’s exhibits that feature artifacts, photographs, videos, memorabilia and written testimonies.

Work is currently being done to expand the exhibits to capture the history of Rock County veterans from the Korean War to the present! Free and open to the public, the HERREID MILITARY MUSEUM was created to honor the stories of sacrifice and service by all veterans who have served this country.

Some Free Advice on Wine

A company’s machine breaks down. The company’s owner, an old school chum of Niels Bohr, calls in the physicist for

help in fixing it. Bohr examines the machine. He draws an “X” on the side and says, “Hit it right here with a hammer.” The company’s mechanic hits the machine with a hammer. It springs into action. The company’s owner thanks Niels Bohr profusely and sends him on his way. A few days later, the owner receives an invoice from Bohr for $10,000. Shocked, the owner phones Bohr. “Niels! What’s this $10,000 invoice? You were only here for 10 minutes! Send me a detailed invoice.” Bohr agrees to send

IN ASSOCIATION WITH VANCE THOMPSON VISION

A New Vision for Transformed Skin

At Artisan 57, we know the science of skincare. Our medical skin & laser practice was born out of the highest standards in surgical eye care. Our team, led by Dr. Alison Tendler, utilizes the most advanced laser technologies and skin therapies to enhance not only how you use your vision but how you feel about your skin.

the invoice. A few days later, the company’s owner opens a new invoice reading: Drawing “X” on the side of your machine $1, Knowing where to put the “X” $ 9,999, Total $10,000.

Knowing the value of your work is important. As a Level I Sommelier, and a former wine distributor, I’ve gained some knowledge that allows me to know where to draw the “X” on a wine list (I know I’m comparing myself to a physicist, but there are some physics involved in opening a bottle of wine!) The following should help you out, hopefully in the near future, when you are wondering what to order from a wine list.

1. ASK. Sounds like simple advice, but one of easiest ways to discover something new is to ask your server or bartender. Asking a simple question like, “What would you drink?” will illicit a few choices for you to ponder over.

Page 62: 2014 10 etcmagazine volume13 issue11

62 nest | vino

2. POINT. A technique that works really well when you’re looking for a suggestion is to hold out the wine list to the server and point to a wine that’s in your price point and then ask, “What would you recommend that’s similar?” Your server will know what price range to stay in and will recommend something you didn’t even know you were looking for.

3. SHARE. Share with your server wines you usually drink so that he or she can make an educated recommendation. “I usually drink KJ Chardonnay, what would you recommend?” or “I drink Louis M. Martini Cabernet all the time, I’m looking for something different.”

4. OLD SCHOOL. When in doubt, choose a red wine with red meat, and a white wine with seafood. But don’t forget one additional rule: Pinot Noir with salmon!

5. INVENTORY CHECK. This is one of my favorites that I use all the time. Ask your server, or preferably the manager, if they have anything “in the back” that’s not on the list. It’s a great feeling to have the manager look around, lean in, and say, “I actually have a Syrah that we just brought in and hasn’t made the list yet. I’ll go get it for you.” A lot of restaurants will have wine in stock that does not appear on their wine list. Use this technique to discover a restaurant’s best kept secret. Another version of this, if you’re only looking for a glass, is to ask if the restaurant has any open bottles that are not on the By-The-Glass list. You might be in for treat if your timing is right!

6. SERVERS KNOW BEST. “What grape or region are you excited about right now?” is a great question to ask your server. Servers and bartenders will typically know what’s hot right now, or what new wine they just tasted at a pre-shift meeting, or what region is releasing wine from a stellar vintage. Servers and bartenders are your liaison to making a good wine decision at a restaurant. Use your tableside resources.

In the ever-expanding world of wine, it is helpful to have some of these tips and tricks tucked away when you’re out to eat. Don’t be afraid to use them. Remember, the more questions you ask, the more suggestions you’ll get. My favorite question I love to hear is, “What do you recommend tonight?” One time, as a joke, I said, “The most expensive bottle on the list.” The gentleman, without missing a beat, said, “Great, we’ll have that.” One of my most memorable, and easiest, wine sales ever.

Next time you’re out, bring this magazine with you, try using one of my tips, and see what happens! Carpe Vino!

Tucked between the beautiful mountains of Southeast Tennessee and along the Tennessee River, you will find

the breathtaking city of Chattanooga, Tennessee. One of the South’s top travel destinations, this scenic vacation destination has been named by the New York Times to be one of the “Top 45 Places to Go” in the world, and is one of only four US destinations named as being so. There is so much to do in Chattanooga, especially in the fall. The brilliant changing colors and fall foliage, the crisp outdoor adventures, and the festivals offered in October are worth making the trip to this wonderful city.

The gorgeous fall colors in and around Chattanooga are some not to miss, and there are several ways to experience them. Rent a bike from the Chattanooga Bike Share System and ride along the 13-mile paved Riverwalk along the Tennessee River and through the Bluff View Art District. There are also hundreds of mountain trails to explore on the nearby Signal and Lookout Mountains. If you’d rather relax and put your feet up while taking in the foliage, the Tennessee Aquarium’s River Gorge Explorer or Southern Belle Riverboat offers cruises into

the Tennessee River Gorge. Live entertainment, tour guides, and delicious meals are also offered along the way. The River GORGEous Fall Color Cruises offer a 3.5 hour fall foliage cruise through the entire 34 miles of Tennessee River Gorge during peak color, and the Southern Belle Riverboat’s BOO’ZE Cruise offers a Halloween costume party with a DJ and drinks. You can also tour the fall colors via train, with the Tennessee Valley Railroad. The Summerville Steam Autumn Leaf Specials offers an all day trip through the historic route from Grand Junction Station in Chattanooga to Summerville Georgia aboard a steam locomotive. The Halloween Eerie Express is a ride aboard a spooky vintage train through the Tennessee Valley to the Funhouse Station, where families will enjoy the Eerie Fun House, storytelling, black-light mini golf, hot cider, and more.

of visitors each year, and is located over 1,120 feet beneath the surface. It is the nation’s largest and deepest waterfall open to the public, with hundreds of gallons of water rushing over by the minute. After visiting the cave, you can enjoy the view from Lookout Mountain Tower, or head over to the ZIPstream Aerial Adventure Course for an amazing view of the scenic city from the tree tops at Ruby Falls. There are suspended obstacle courses built in the trees, including bridges, walkways, tunnels, zip lines, and more. Also a part of ChattaBOOga is Rock City’s Enchanted MAiZE at Blowing Springs Farm in Flintstone, GA, just 3 miles from Chattanooga. Referred to as Blowing Screams Farm in October, this outdoor haunted attraction features hayrides, bonfires, a critter corral, a pumpkin patch maze, and the Coca-Cola Playground. 10 acres of Enchanted MAiZE is in the design of a crop circle. Another ChattaBOOga attraction is Lake Winnie Amusement Park’s WinnepeSPOOKah, with haunted rides, magic shoes, parades, and a Train of No Return. The annual Chattanooga Zoo’s Boo in the Zoo includes costume contests, games, trick-or-treat stations, and more family-friendly fun. The Tennessee Aquarium offers ODDtober during this month,

Chattanooga Ghost Tours are available nightly in October, and were named one of the top ten ghost tours in the U.S. by TripAdvisor. A tour of downtown Chattanooga’s most haunted spots will bring you through some very historical parts of town with some exciting storytelling along the way.

There are also some seasonal activities that are less related to the Halloween holiday, including RiverRocks and Rocktoberfest. RiverRocks is a 10-day festival attracting some of the nation’s top athletes who compete in what has become the region’s premiere adventure sports competition. The RiverRocks Adventure Games has trail running, mountain biking, stand-up paddle board racing, rock climbing, and several other thrilling sports games. It is one of the most anticipated events of the year for many people, and there is also live music to enjoy every weekend in October. Rocktoberfest takes place at Rock City Gardens, which is located atop Lookout Mountain in Georgia. It is a celebration of harvests and fall foliage, with German music and food filling the atmosphere and live performances by **Certified Am Board of Plastic Surgery and Am Board of Surgery, *Certified Am Board of Plastic Surgery.

Just after a breast cancer diagnosis, women often feel shocked, afraid of the unknowns, or caught up in a blur of unwelcome

news. Yet after that brief season, they’re ready to face their disease and fight.

“It’s cool to see women make that transition,” said Tricia Merrigan, MD, fellowship-trained Breast Surgeon with Avera Medical Group Comprehensive Breast Care. “Each woman who has breast cancer is different. We encourage them to be involved in the decision-making process and take ownership of how they will be treated.”

Part of that decision-making process is getting more than one medical opinion. “Breast cancer treatment is all about the team approach. We’re learning more and more about breast cancer, and understanding that the best approach is based on the biology of the disease. So different treatment decisions are made for different patients,” Dr. Merrigan said.

Courtney Haverdink of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, was diagnosed with breast cancer in May, just after her 43rd birthday. Not being able to get an appointment to see a surgeon right away was unnerving, so she turned to Avera’s Breast Cancer Consult Clinic, where she could talk with multiple experts at one appointment.

“I had worked for 14 years in cancer research, so I knew what

breast cancer, and understanding that the

I would probably hear. But it was important for me, and also for my husband’s sake, to be presented with my options, see it all mapped out on paper, and have all my questions answered on the same day,” Courtney said.

Because a breast MRI had shown suspicious areas in both breasts, Courtney made the decision to have a bilateral mastectomy. The treatment plan was that if the cancer was at all invasive, she would have follow-up chemotherapy. After surgery, Courtney was thankful to hear that the cancer was confined to the milk ducts (DCIS), so there was no need for chemotherapy. “Based on the tumor markers, there was no need for biologic therapy either,” Courtney said.

Dr. Merrigan says it’s natural for women to turn to the Internet to learn more about breast cancer after a diagnosis. “Googling will get you the most common treatment plan,” she said. But before settling on a decision, it’s important to learn more about your specific case.

“We test each breast cancer for estrogen, progesterone and HER2 receptors,” Dr. Merrigan said. Breast cancer can be estrogen- or progesterone-receptor positive, HER2-positive, a combination of the above, or none of the above – also known as triple negative.

“The most common scenario is that we do surgery first,” Dr. Merrigan said. However, in some cases, having chemotherapy first can be beneficial. “If we can shrink the tumor or even make it go away and then do surgery, surgery is easier and it provides the patient with more time to make a decision about her surgery or to get genetic testing, if it’s indicated.”

Understandably, women want to be on the “safe side” after a cancer diagnosis, and may only consider a mastectomy. Yet for certain early-stage breast cancers that are confined to one breast, lumpectomy with radiation therapy yields the very same high outcomes as mastectomy. Recent technology known as IOeRT provides a radiation boost at the time of surgery, shortening the course of radiation after surgery.

“Breast-conserving surgery is a very safe choice for women with early-stage cancers. Sometimes patients make a decision to have more extensive surgery, thinking they will do better long term, when there’s no difference in the outcome data. We don’t want patients to make decisions out of fear,” Dr. Merrigan said.

In Courtney’s case, with suspicious images in both breasts, she agreed with cancer care experts that a bilateral mastectomy was the way to go. “I knew what I wanted to do, but it was reassuring to have that decision confirmed with a second opinion.”

Sisters Use Farming Background to Build a Plan for the Future

Growing up on their family’s South Dakota farm, sisters Lara and Leah Rommereim developed a love for agriculture and

respect for farmers and livestock producers. Like many other young people in South Dakota, they are combining their early experiences on the farm with education and internship opportunities to build their own career path in food and agriculture.

Lara and Leah are the daughters of Steve and Charlotte Rommereim. The Rommereims own and operate a fifth-generation, diversified livestock and crop farm a few miles outside of Alcester, South Dakota. They raise corn and soybeans, have a beef cow/calf herd, and raise pigs in a 2,400 head finishing barn. Pigs are raised in the climate controlled barn after they are weaned from sows.

The sisters both helped with farm work, including with corn and soybean harvest, managing yield comparison trials, feeding livestock and caring for pigs. After high school, both girls continue to help their dad during busy times of year.

“We helped out wherever we could. Whether it was helping with calves or in the hog barn, mowing or during harvest, there was always something that needed to be done,” said Leah.

The Rommereims were involved in 4-H from an early age, then also joined FFA in high school. They raised cattle and pigs throughout the year and showed them at fairs and took advantage of leadership opportunities in both 4-H and FFA programs.

Lara’s experiences as an intern at Ag United for South Dakota and South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association strengthened her decision to go into agriculture as a career. She is earning a degree in Ag Communications at South Dakota State University.

“Being able to work with people and my family that are passionate about the values and traditions of farmers and advocating for the farmer has influenced my choice of a degree,” said Lara. “It also gave me an opportunity to learn different ways that I could be involved in the agriculture industry.”

During her internship at Ag United, Lara coordinated summer open houses at dairy and pork farms, helped with Days Out tours that took moms and food industry professionals to farms,

and worked on programs that helped connect South Dakota’s farm and ranch families with consumers.

“I enjoyed talking to people who wanted to learn more about how their food is produced. As a farm girl, that is something I had taken for granted,” she said.

Leah is a senior at South Dakota State University. She will graduate in December with degrees in Agriculture Leadership and Animal Science and a minor in Agricultural Business. She is active in several campus organizations, including serving as president of the SDSU Swine Club and playing on the women’s rugby club. She has also attended the Agriculture Future of America Leaders Conference in Kansas City.

This summer, Leah completed a production internship with the Pipestone System. She worked in Pipestone barns in both Pipestone, Minnesota, and Independence, Iowa, where she gained hands-on experience in all phases of raising swine, from how sows are cared for during gestation, then after piglets are born and cared for as they grow and mature.

“The internship really expanded my knowledge. Since our farm focuses on finishing pigs, I’d never worked with sows and nursery barns before,” said Leah. “The experience helped me decide that I really want to work in the pork industry after graduation.”

Leah also interned at Ag United, which gave her insights on how farmers can reach out to their communities to explain how they produce food and livestock.

“I improved my communications skills and working with other farm families only strengthened my passion for sharing information about what today’s farmers do and why,” she said.

Both Lara and Leah are excited about their opportunities after college graduation and look forward to careers that will help farm and ranch families succeed. They also see a bright future for agriculture in South Dakota.

“Whether it is returning to the family farm or taking a job in one of the many business that help the state’s farmers succeed, it is an exciting time for young people who are passionate about farming and food production,” said Lara.

I’m comfortable feeding my family the food we grow.

You can be, too.

More than 95 percent of South Dakota farms are family farms, like ours. Using technology such as biotech seed has helped us reduce weed and pest control product use — and we’re committed to continuing improvement. There’s no doubt in my mind the food we grow is safer than ever.

The Science of Spitting UpWhy It’s Okay for Your Baby

Officially, it’s called gastroesophageal reflux, but you probably know it better as “spitting up”. Despite its

uncomely appearance and usually inopportune timing, it can be a perfectly normal and natural process that is common in healthy infants. In fact, a large cross-sectional study showed that two-thirds of 4-month-old infants spit up on a daily basis.

Reflux is the process of emptying the stomach’s contents into

the esophagus and then often out of the month. When an infant with reflux spits up, it is generally effortless and non-projectile. However, some may have more forceful vomiting. Reflux most often occurs after the baby eats, but infants with reflux may also spit up in between meals as well. Many infants with reflux are described as “happy spitters”, and will appear happy and normal despite frequently spitting up.

While reflux can be completely normal for a child, occasionally it can bring about more troublesome symptoms or complications. It might cause feeding refusal, poor weight gain, extreme fussiness, or respiratory problems like pneumonia or apnea. This combination of symptoms is referred to as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). Your child’s physician will be able to diagnose if your child has GERD based on the

infant’s history and physical exam. They will determine if there are any warning signals like vomiting blood or bile, consistent forceful vomiting, lethargy or any other abnormal exam findings that would be suspicious of an alternative underlying diagnosis.

Testing is not routinely needed for the diagnosis of reflux, but may be considered for select infants, particularly in cases where another diagnosis is suspected. Some tests that may be considered include upper gastrointestinal series, abdominal ultrasound, impedance pH study or endoscopy.

To help reduce the amount your baby spits up, there are a few tips you can implement into your routine. Start with conservative measures like keeping your infant calm and in an upright position after feeding, avoid overfeeding and avoid exposure to tobacco smoke. Your pediatrician may recommend thickening the formula with baby cereal or a commercial brand thickener, or trying a formula specifically designed for infants with reflux. There may be consideration to try medications to decrease acid production, like H2 blockers or proton pump inhibitors. Giving your baby special milk free formula may also be an option because some babies have a milk protein intolerance that can present with symptoms similar to reflux. As long as your baby doesn’t have any life-threatening complications related to reflux, conservative medical treatment is recommended with anti-reflux surgery being reserved for infants who have significant life-threatening complications proven secondary to reflux.

And although it might feel like the stream of spit-up will never end, reflux in the majority of infants will improve on its own with time. You can expect to see a change around 6 to 7 months of age when only 20 percent of babies will still have daily episodes of reflux. Some of this improvement is related to infants starting to eat solid foods and spending more time in the upright position, along with normal growth and maturation. Infants with ongoing reflux further improve as they get older, and by one year of age, only 5 percent of babies continue to reflux on a daily basis.

If you have any questions or concerns, you are encouraged to speak with your child’s pediatrician.

I love Halloween! Everything about it makes me excited. When Halloween is on the door step, it means it is finally fall and I

adore fall. I love how over the years Halloween has graduated from a child’s holiday to a family celebration. From the food, to the wild decorations, the neighborhood haunted house and the spectacular costumes; Halloween has turned into a wicked festival of fun.

Halloween parties just kind of evolve with frozen ice hands sulking in spooky dry ice punch. Cookies have minds of their own with fangs, fur, and bright green eyes. Every plate is covered with finger sandwiches made of green cucumbers and almond sliced fingernails. Apples aren’t just for bobbing, they are for

making monster mouths and covering with creepy caramel. Deviled eyeballs will be all the rage and the best thing...it’s all homemade.

My children start dreaming of their costumes after the fourth of July. We have been famous characters like Shrek, the queen of hearts, Bat Girl and Captain America, but the best costumes were handmade. I have been making Halloween costumes for my kiddos for ten years and I will never forget that first little Snow White costume. I made it out of fleece, sewed on bright yellow netting and hot glued my heart out. It was a masterpiece! Ever since the first time her eyes lit up, I knew I would spend hours every year manifesting their creative vision.

Kickin’ It!

We have glued fluff stuffed tails to the back of striped footed pajamas to transform into a “ballerina kitty”. I have hand sewn on piles and piles of tulle to a glittering tutu to make a glamorous butterfly fairy. I have shopped hours on Amazon to find nude body suits to then puffy paint on a mermaid top and then piece together fabric for a whimsical tail. Gallon sized zipper bags of shimmering stones taunted me night after night to stone a rodeo queen and a medieval princess all made with a soft purple velour. I have retired many hot glue guns over the years and with my fear of sewing my fingers together, my hours are spent peeling glue off my fingertips while stitching fabric together with a needle and thread.

This year will be no different as I have pre-planned my crazy-craftiness with my own board on Pinterest. I am planning on making a sassy mad hatter with a darling little hat and a super easy petti-tutu. I found at least three tutorials on Pinterest and YouTube that were simple to follow. I am also creating, with the help of little hands, a glitter witch, because we love anything that sparkles as you can tell. We will use the same idea for the mad hatter hat, except give it a wicked point. The broom is going to be made out of an old wrapping paper roll with heaps of hot glue and glitter. My oldest is going to rock out some footed pjs with a pacifier, pig tails and a bib. I love how my kids are now helping make their own ideas into cool costumes.

Page 96: 2014 10 etcmagazine volume13 issue11

Once costumes have been created, and make-up has been decided on, it’s time to get spooktacular with our decorations and carved pumpkins. There is nothing like pulling the guts out of the carcass of a ripened squash. Nothing. Sometimes a Sharpie face is just as good as a traced design. Either way, everyone enjoys the pumpkin parade on display in their neighborhoods. Stringy spiderwebs, ghoulish sounds and lights can surely set the mood yet I prefer a fun wreath or lawn stake. I have also been known to stalk Pinterest for wreath ideas, and there is a vault of secrets for making the perfect wreath, so I am definitely doing that this year.

We carefully pick out safe prizes for all and then my kids take turns handing them out. They especially enjoy seeing the other kids’ costumes, but they adore the little ones that toddle up to the door. Halloween is a night when all the joy I experienced when I was young, has now come full circle, and I can now see that joy in my children’s eyes. I keep a watchful eye on them as they go door to door for treats or frightful displays of fog machines and spooky sounds. It’s just another reminder of what’s worth celebrating and how important it is to make memories like these. May your Halloween overflow with frightfully fun friends, ghastly glorious designs and spooky sweet surprises.

Materials needed:

Rectangular shaped

burlap, one large

apple half, fabric

paint, a foam paint

brush, a painter pen,

twine, flexible metal jump rings, and a large piece of

cardboard.

Instructions:

Make sure you have as many burlap pieces as you want

for your garland, all in the same rectangular size. Using

a large piece of cardboard, empty out a glob of fabric

paint in your choice of fall color. Cut a large apple in

half, then use a foam paint brush to spread a little bit

of paint onto the apple half. Carefully stamp your apple

onto the middle of your piece of burlap. Repeat this

step in your color choices, until all of your burlap pieces

are stamped. Once they are all stamped with the apple

halves, use a painter pen to draw on a stem, some seeds

into the middle, and any other apple features you want

to include. Once completely dry, hook some flexible

metal jump rings into the banner pieces, then loop those

through a piece of twine.

CAndy Corn Art

Materials needed: Ruler, glue, marker, and construction paper in white, yellow, and orange colors.

Instructions: Draw a large triangle on white construction paper, then using a ruler, divide the triangle into three even sections. Next, cut two inch squares from orange, yellow, and white construction paper, then roll those squares into balls. Glue the orange balls onto the bottom section of the triangle, the yellow balls onto the middle section of the triangle, and the white balls onto the top section of the triangle. Let the candy corn art dry, then it’s ready to hang for display.

Materials needed:

Glue, white paper, scissors, and some fall

leaves in a variety of sizes.

Instructions:

Go on a nature walk and collect as many

shapes, sizes, and colors of fall leaves that

you can. When you get home, spread the

leaves out and decide which ones would

create certain animals. Larger leaves

could serve as the body of a fox, while the

skinnier leaves could be its legs, a wider

leaf could be its bushy tail, and so on. Get

creative with the scissors if you must, and

have fun creating several animals from

the leaves you found on your walk. Glue

them in place on the white paper, and let

dry. Frame these pieces for a year-round

display in your home.

FAll trees

Materials needed: Paper towel tubes, brown craft paint, paint brush, glue, dot paint markers, white card stock or poster board, some artificial fall leaves from any craft store, and scissors.

Instructions: Paint the paper towel roll brown, then let it dry completely. Using the scissors, cut into the bottom of the paper towel roll creating four sections, then glue those sections onto the paper. Once dry, cut the top of the paper towel roll into pieces that look like branches when bent downwards. Glue the artificial leaves onto the tree branches. Using dot paint markers, decorate the white paper, creating what looks like fallen leaves.

stuFFed pAper Apple

Materials needed: Brown paper bag, manila file folders, paint, pencil, scissors, sponges, stapler or hole punch, yarn, newspaper for stuffing, brown and green construction paper, and glue.

Instructions: Using the scissors, cut an old paper shopping bag so that it lays flat. Draw a large apple on a manila file folder or other sturdy paper, then cut it out to make an apple tracer, making sure it is symmetrical. Trace two apples on the brown paper bag, one on the front and one on the back. Once traced, cut the apples out from the paper bag. Lay out some newspaper or other surface you don’t mind getting paint on, then put your paper bag apples on top. Using sponges, dip them in paint and dot the apples with your choice of fall colors. Have fun with different color combinations if you’d like. Set the paper bag apples aside to dry. Once completely dry, take the front and back of your apple shapes and attach them together by either stapling around the edge or punching holes and lacing yarn around the edges. Be sure to leave a small hole in the apple’s edge so you can stuff the inside with newspaper or other stuffing choice. Once you are finished stuffing the apple, close the hole the same way you attached the edges previously. Cut out a brown stem and a green leaf from construction paper, then glue them to the top of your stuffed apple. You can choose to attach more yarn and hang them around your house for fall, or display them next to your fall decor on your entry table.

Halloween has become one of the favorite holidays in America.

It’s the one day a year we get to dress up like who we would like to be for a few hours. It is so popular that we even include our pets. I am not sure they fully acknowledge the

fact that they have become a bumble bee or a super hero, but many seem to enjoy the activities that are involved.

If you plan to dress up your pet, use a few common sense tips to keep them safe and happy. It is important that the pieces of their costume are not edible. Or at least not being able to be chewed or swallowed. We have had to surgically remove wire, string and fake fruit from the stomachs of our patients.

It is also important not to leave them alone once the costume has been placed on them. I always worry about strings or collars that could cause strangulation or get wrapped around their legs, tail or ears. It does not take very long for some of those “Houdinis” to get out of their costumes.

If they are going along Trick or Treating, make sure they have lights or reflective tape just like your children. It is too easy for them to get to the end of their leash and end up on the street. People are very distracted while driving during Halloween and may not see your pet. The LED light up leashes are a very good idea for not just Halloween but any time you walk in the dark.

Securing the candy is the most important safety tip for Halloween. Those goodies that kids and adults like can be harmful for your pets. Chocolate is always a bad idea and can cause vomiting, diarrhea, seizures and even death if enough is consumed. If your pet does consume a lot of chocolate, induce

vomiting and call your Veterinarian. Some chocolates are worse than others with bakers chocolate being the most concentrated and dangerous.

The other candy will also cause them to be hyper and get a tummy ache just like kids. Some dogs are such thieves that they swallow the candy and its wrapper. So make sure you keep it up and secure from the pets.

Cats are not immune from getting into trouble during the holiday. Keep candles out of their reach and never leave a lit candle unattended with your cat. They can be burned, come in contact with the hot wax and worse, knock it over and start a fire in your home.

The curiosity of cats can also get them into trouble. Make sure they are in the home and in a secure area to keep them from getting outside. There is a lot of danger outside during Halloween and they should avoid it. In addition, many of the decorations involve long string-like material than can be eaten. Although they look fun, if consumed, it can get caught up in their stomach or intestines and cause severe problems.

If your pet has a great costume, bring them on Thursday or Friday, October 30 or 31st to Horizon Pet Care for prizes and $5 is donated by the clinic to the food pantry for every pet in a costume.

Decorative Roller ShadesLight control and privacy are achieved with the modern roller shades that echo the warm neutrals of the walls. A fabric-covered cassette finishes the look at the top while the decorative hem and bead trim tie the shades to the drapery fabric and save them from an industrial look.

Draperies & HardwareThe neutral colors of the walls, floor and upholstery are enhanced by the punch that comes from the window seat. The color story begins with the drapery panels, worked in the Lunar Sky fabric, a large multi-colored pattern that's bold but without getting pushy. Hung on a wood pole with rings, the look is a little bit traditional and a little bit modern. They're the perfect frame to the windows and window seat, making it a focal point in the room.

Window Seat & PillowsThe frame is completed with the seat cushion and pillows, done mostly in solids compatible with the draperies. The deep orange of the cushion has some pop but it's balanced by the purples and blues in the pillows. Varied sizes, shapes, and trips--plus the two patterned pillows--keeps the look from becoming static.

Twin Mounds

110 friends & family | Historical marker

A continental ice sheet covered this area tens of thousands of years ago. The glacier flowed here during the glacial stage, which lasted from about

302,000 to 132,000 Y. B. P. (Years Before Present). Part of its leading edge stretched from Garretson to Dell Rapids.

As the climate warmed, the glacier began to thaw, and meltwater streams formed on top, within, and under the ice. Well-sorted sand and gravel was dumped into a fanlike shape at the margin of the glacier.

The small hills nearby are the deposits that remained after the ice sheet retreated. Geologists call such glacial hills, kames. Directly south of this location is a kame with sand and gravel with matching twin mounds on its east and west flanks.

In the late 1870s and 1880s oxen- and horse-drawn covered wagon trains carried new settlers into this area. Few landmarks existed to guide the wagon masters or to break the monotony of the tall grass, treeless, and gently rolling prairie, but the kame with two mounds was easily recognized. It became a point of reference for incoming pioneers who named it Twin Mounds.

the late Wisconsin Ice sheetThis map of South Dakota illustrates the Coteau des Prairies, the flatiron shaped area on its eastern edge. The white area is the ice sheet which flowed into the state from the northeast. It was divided by the Coteau. The two arrows represent the direction of flow of the two lobes which resulted from the divided ice sheet. The diagonal lines represent the ice-free areas of the state. Image owner: Dennis Tomhave.
