Steve Browning, the director of athletics at South-ern Arkansas, en-ters into his fourth season as head baseball coach. A former player

at SAU himself, Browning has been part of the Mulerider baseball program since 1998. After his playing days were through, Browning went into the coaching ranks as he served as a student as-sistant, graduate assistant, and assistant coach for the perennial powerhouse program. Since taking over the helm of the Mulerider baseball program in June 2010, Browning has kept the winning tradition at SAU alive and well as his teams have captured a conference champion-ship in each of his first three years as the skipper, including the last two Great American Confer-ence Championships. In addition to the con-ference championships, Browning has led the Muleriders to a NCAA Regional Tournament ap-pearance in each of his first three seasons as well. Overall, the Muleriders have earned six consecu-tive regional tournament berths and have won four of the last five conference championships. Racking up conference championship rings and regional tournaments appearances are not the only note-worthy accomplishments un-der Browning’s tenure. In his three years as head coach, the Mulerider baseball program has had five players drafted into Major League Baseball, including three draftees this most recent season. He has also coached 15 first-team all-conference players, nine all-region players, three all-America selections, two conference freshmen of the year, one conference pitcher and one conference player of the year.

This past spring was Browning’s best at SAU as his team went 42-17, marking SAU’s 13th consecutive 30-plus win season and 22nd in the past 23 years. The team also made their eighth overall NCAA regional appearance, and finished the season ranked 13/25 in the two respected Division II polls. Individually, Browning was named the GAC coach of the year in 2012, and in his career, Browning has compiled a 115-50 record in his three years as head coach. After two seasons (1997-1998) at Crowder Community College (now Crowder College) in Neosho, Mo., Browning transferred and played in 1999 and 2000 for Southern Arkansas. He was a two-year starter in the outfield and co-captain of the 2000 team, hitting .314 with 17 doubles, four home runs and 52 RBI in his two seasons for the Muleriders. Browning received his B.S.E. in health, kine-siology and recreation from SAU in 2001, and holds three M.Ed. degrees from the university in kinesiology (2002), education administration and supervision (2005) and special education (2007). A graduate of Sheridan High School, Brown-ing is married to the former Brandy Nicholson of Strong and they have two sons, Cade and Mason.

The Great American Conference is one of the newest in NCAA Division II, first taking the field in the fall of 2011. Entering its fourth year of competition, the GAC continues to establish itself on the field of play against the very tough Central Region/Super Region 3. The NCAA announced on March 9, 2011 that the Great American Conference was officially accepted as the 23rd NCAA Division II athletics conference. Although the new league was new, it was a concept that had been informally discussed since the early 1990’s between institutions from Arkansas and Oklahoma.

Nine charter members (Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, East Central, Harding, Henderson State, Ouachita Baptist, Southeastern Oklahoma State, Southern Arkansas and Southwestern Oklahoma State) agreed to form a new NCAA Division II athletic conference in July 2010 and notifi ed their respective leagues of the decision. In November of 2010, the league was stamped as the Great American Conference and an-nounced in March of 2011 that it would become the 23rd active member conference in NCAA Division II. Will Prewitt, previously an associate commissioner of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC), was selected as the first GAC Commissioner and appointed to his post one month before the league had officially been named. He is joined on staff by Associate Commisioner for Compliance Audra Tope, Assis-tant Commissioner for Communications Eric Moyer and Assistant Commissioner for Operations Stephanie Pre-witt. The nine founding members began active membership within the NCAA Division II ranks on September 1, 2011. Earlier that summer, Southern Nazarene was accepted into the NCAA Division II membership process and they were extended a provisional invitation to join the GAC. Northwestern Oklahoma State also received a pro-visional invitation after being accepted into the process in the summer of 2012. Southern Nazarene becomes an active championship member of the GAC for the 2014-15 season while Northwestern Oklahoma State will do the same the following year. In July of 2014, Oklahoma Baptist was accepted with provisional membership into NCAA Division II and will become a member of the GAC in 2015-16.
