COMMUNITY GUIDE 2014-15

The city has seen many new and revitalized institu-tions over the last decade. Those institutions include, social, business, educational, religious, and financial entities that are making continuous efforts to grow and prosper. As one looks back on the events of the past few years, it is evident that the Alliance community and its citizens demonstrate a resilience that has en-dured over the course of the city’s history.

Alliance is at the center of the eastern Stark County region, which provides goods and services as well as quality-of-life elements that attract people to our city from a regional perspective. Statistics indicate that more than 40,000 people live within a five-mile radius of the center of Alliance. Being at the juncture of Stark, Columbiana, and Mahoning counties makes Alliance

the center of commerce for the region.The business community has led the way - particular-

ly retail establishments. The most recent developments have included at the plaza containing the Kohl’s de-partment Store, Maurice’s, and Famous Footwear. Also along State Street, the Chipotle Restaurant, Sprint and Aspen Dental are housed in one facility and nearby the new Panera Bread and Dairy Queen restaurants have been added to the landscape. Additionally, Frank’s Family Restaurant, total refurbishments of both McDonald’s restaurants in the city, as well as the refur-bishment of the Burger King restaurants give the public many choices of eating establishments.

Market Street and the Farm Girls Pub & Grub on Main Street add to the dining options located in the city’s historic arts and culture dis-trict. Also new to downtown is Paris Studios, an active workspace and display area for local artists.

The educational com-munity has seen continued growth as well. The leader has been the University of Mount Union. The University has grown, expanding its offerings in graduate studies and soon will be offering a bachelor’s degree in nursing and a doctorate in physical therapy in a new building under construction on Union Avenue. Also under con-struction is a new theater to replace Rodman Playhouse on the campus located on Simpson Street.

Stark State College pro-vides technical and career-oriented programs and soon will be starting on their new facility located on the grounds of and in collaboration with Alliance Community Hospital.

Area attractions include the international headquar-ters of the Cat Fanciers’ Association and their associat-ed CFA Foundation museum that is open for touring on Main Street. The Downtown Farmers’ Market has been a tremendous success on summer Saturday mornings, as has the Downtown Summer Concert Series on Friday nights. Arts in Stark has chosen downtown Alliance as a focus for renewal over the next decade in the areas of art, culture, entertainment, and retail. The Troll Hole, with the world’s largest collection of trolls, is also locat-ed on Main Street. For many decades, the Carnation City Players have performed live theater at the Fire-house Theater on Market Street. The renovated Martin Luther King Bridge stands out as a major connector and tribute to Dr. King as well as being Alliance’s histori-cal link to the railroad. The future is bright for the renais-sance of the downtown region.

Attractions in other areas of the City include the World War History and Art Museum, a world class facil-ity dedicated to preserving memorabilia created by soldiers that endured the World Wars located at the College Plaza. The Haines House offers visitors the opportunity to explore a “station” used on the Under-ground Railroad routes to aid slaves on their escape

north. The Mabel Hartzell Home, located at the corner of Park and Vine, is operated by the Alliance Historical Society and allows visitors a glimpse into the Victorian era. A major attraction is the Glamorgan Castle, located on Union Avenue in the heart of the City, which offers tours every Friday during the year.

The city’s park system con-tinues to be a mainstay for recreation in Alliance.

On the south side is the city treasure of Silver Park, home to the Fourth of July fireworks celebration as well as the site for many of the Carna-tion Festival events in August, touting Alliance as the “Car-nation City” home of the Scarlet Carnation, the Ohio state flower. Soon Silver Park

will be the home for the 9-11 Memorial, a moving display of artifacts from the World Trade Center. Each sum-mer the Hot Stove League hosts their local, regional, and state tournaments at Butler-Rodman Park

located on State Street, an annual occurrence in the

city for over sixty years. The Alliance Area Senior

Center (AASC), located on West Vine Street, is a busy place and hosts many activities for the area’s senior citizens. On the other side of town, on West. Beech Street in Washington Township, the Beech Creek Botanical Garden & Nature Preserve attracts visitors, who can participate in a variety of activities year-round, including visiting the popular butterfly house in the sum-mer and hand-feeding chickadees in the winter.

Besides the museums to attract people there are many sporting, music, art and theatrical events year round in the City.

The University of Mount Union, besides offering na-tionally recognized football teams, has a full range of spectator sports including new lacrosse programs. This is in addition to their wide range of musical entertain-ment, art exhibits, plays and musicals, and learning opportunities geared toward the public. In the same respect, all manner of sports and artistic entertainment can be utilized through the local public school pro-grams of Alliance and Marlington schools.

THE CITY OF ALLIANCE EMERGED FROM A HISTORY OF DIVERSITY AND COOPERATION.

Before it was formed from the union of several small villages in 1850, the land was occupied by Hopewell Native Americans, a group of indigenous people famous for their mysterious mounds, craft work and pottery.

A great way to unearth the town’s history is to take a tour of Alliance City Cemetery. The grounds, lo-cated on Vine Street, are the resting place of several significant Alliance natives, which local cemetery his-torian W. John Gross said provides a unique look inside the Carnation City.

After all, as Gross explains, “If you really want to know your community, start at the cemetery.”

Haines, whose estate is now a historical site open

to the public thanks to the Alliance Area Preservation Society, was an

active abolitionist who transformed

his home into an Underground Railroad

site in the 1800s. The property is now open for

weekend tours.Other important natives, such as Col. William Henry

Morgan, the president and former owner of Morgan Engineering Co., still have a presence in the Alliance community.

Morgan was the builder of Glamorgan Castle, an estate built on a 50-acre plot of land in Alliance. In its heyday, the Castle had bowling alleys, a billiard room and a large swimming pool in the basement. It was built from 100 tons of structural steel and 96 train car loads of Vermont marble.

The property, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, currently houses the central admin-istrative offices for Alliance City Schools. Still, the Castle

Due to its railroads, which served as the crossroads that became the nucleus of the city’s future, Alliance quickly gained an industrial base. However, it was a kind gesture of respect courtesy of Dr. Lamborn, which proved to be the most influential.

In 1886, Dr. Lamborn propagated a Scarlet Car-nation from French seedligns and presented William McKinley, whom he was opposing for the 18th Con-gressional District, with a Lamborn Red boutonniere before each debate.

McKinley regularly spoke of these carnations as his good luck charm, one that eventually led him to the White House.

On September 14, 1901, moments after removing the flower from his lapel and giving it to a young ad-mirer at the Buffalo Exposition, President McKinley was struck down by an assassin’s bullet.

Following years of lobbying by Lamborn, the Ohio General Assembly passed a joint resolution naming the scarlet carnation the state flower February 3, 1904.

And more than 45 years later, the Ohio Legislature rec-ognized Alliance as the “Carnation City,” which eventu-ally gave birth to the Greater Alliance Carnation Festival, an annual tribute to the city’s Carnation legacy. n

From A to ZANIMALSOhio state law requires any dog over the age of three

months to have a license within 30 days of ownership. Any license purchased after 30 days of ownership (or renewed after the annual renewal period) must include a penalty equal to the cost of the license. Stark County tags cost $14 for an adult license if purchased by Jan. 31 with duplicate licenses for $5.

Founded in 1999, the AAD, formerly the Alliance Area Development Foundation, focuses on positively impact-ing retention of companies and their expansion, as well as attracting new companies.

AAD is led by president Tom Pukys, a certified eco-nomic developer. In the spring of 2013, Pukys earned the designation of Certified Economic Developer (CEcD), a recognition that denotes a mastery of principal skills in economic development, professional attainment and a commitment to personal and professional growth.

He also chairs the city’s Technology Accelerator Al-liance (TA2) and Early Childhood Education Alliance. He also serves with the Alliance Rotary, United Way and Junior Achievement as well as vice chairman of the Alli-ance For Children and Families.

Pukys, a Stark County native, foresees a positive future for business in the Alliance area. “Companies in this area are really growing,” he said. “Part of my job is to talk to shop owners and gauge if their business is growing. Over the past year, 68 percent said sales are increasing and 32 percent said they are stable.

“There are $19 million in capital expenditures for the manufacturing and industrial sector over the next three years. There is also a Union Ave corridor project that is in the planning stages. It is a project that many partners are coming together on that includes Mount Union as well as the AAD, the Alliance Chamber, GAF, Alliance Community Hospital, the City of Alliance as well as many interested business owners.”

Pukys also works to improve the image of the Alli-ance area, a task, he says, that should be shared by all Alliance residents.

“We are all advocates here. We are all involved in economic development. What I am doing, you all are also doing. We’re collaborating and getting things done.”

Pukys is particularly involved with the Technology Ac-celerator Alliance project, an incubator program that seeks to assist technology companies in locating in the Alliance area. Three such companies received fund-ing in 2013 and more will be accepted in 2014 and the years to come.

Most recently, the AAD has provided instrumental assistance in further developing the manufacturing, service and retail industries in Alliance as well as look towards ways to utilize oil and gas growth, which is ex-pected to generate 204,000 jobs by 2015.

For almost a century, the Alliance Area Chamber of Commerce has made its business to advance commer-cialism within its coverage area.

Chamber president R. Mark Locke explained that since 1915, the chamber’s job has been to help busi-nesses succeed.

“Whatever that may be, including networking, legislative concerns or offering educational seminars, our members dictate our agenda,” he said. “Lately networking has been the focus, especially during the tough years. Members see it as free marketing opportu-nities.”

Marketing seminars are offered quarterly, ranging from utilizing social media to dealing with the media for crisis communications.

The chamber membership is made up of more than 400 business and professional leaders whose purpose is advancing the economic, industrial, professional, cul-tural and civic welfare of the Alliance area.

Among its divisions is one dedicated to women, the first of its kind in Ohio, which raises more than $1,000 an-nually to support area nursing homes and shelters.

Committees focus on economic development, busi-ness education, legislative, membership recruiting and project development. The Presidents’ Club consists of a group of past chamber presidents who oversee the public relations arm of the organization.

Locke said the chamber encourages the growth of existing industries and businesses while giving proper

assistance to any new firms or individuals seeking to locate, to support all those activities beneficial to the community and to oppose those which might be detri-mental and to promote the welfare of all area citizens, always following those policies intended to accomplish the greatest good for the greatest number.

The Alliance chamber is a member of the Canton-Stark County Convention and Visitors’ Bureau, handling city tourism.

In both the chamber’s downtown location as well as a visitors’ bureau located in a kiosk in the center of the Carnation City Mall, tourists can find maps and brochures

on various venues of interest within the city, such as Glamorgan Castle, the Cat Fanciers’ Association Founda-tion’s Feline Historical Museum and the University of Mount Union, as well as promoting events such as the Hot Stove League baseball tournaments and Carnation Festival.

Locke said the office also provides information to in-dividuals who are interested in relocating to the Carna-tion City, including general information on Alliance and local realtors.

“Most people contact us in preparations to visiting a family in the area or class reunions, which attract a lot of out-of-towners,” said Locke. “However, others do con-tact us when looking to move to Alliance for job-related relocation or coming back to take care of a parent.”

The chamber also plays an important role, when companies are considering relocating to Alliance.

“Most communities are offering the same package, especially in regards to county and local packages, so it isn’t surprising that quality of life plays such a huge role into giving a community the edge,” Locke said.

While Alliance has its community development ben-efits through its Urban Development Action Grant loan programs and tax incentives, Alliance’s park system is second-to-none, Locke said. “Mount Union is a huge asset and a big draw.”

When a group of business leaders decided 15 years ago to establish an organization geared towards philanthropic work in the greater Alliance area, a movement was born. The Greater Alliance Foundation awarded more than a half million dollars in grants last year.

Since the organization was founded to match chari-table intentions with specific needs of the community through carefully managed endowments, the Greater Alliance Foundation’s assets has grown to exceed $10 million and also helped more than 70 organizations with $4 million-plus in grants.

One of this past year’s major projects was the Al-liance YMCA’s $3.2 million dollar capital campaign program, which was supplemented by a $450,000 grant by the Greater Alliance Foundation.

The grant was the largest gift received for the project and the largest ever awarded by the Foundation.

According to Greater Alliance Foundation Executive Director Doug Schwarz, the $450,000 grant will be paid over three years.

“We do not know of any other opportunity in our city that will have more of a positive impact on our children

and their families more than that the building col-laboration between the YMCA and the Stuckey Fam-ily Interfaith Development Center. This is why trustees made such a large financial commitment to the YMCA Capital Campaign,” he said.

The foundation’s many successful programs have included efforts such as the Robert T. White School of Practical Nursing, which under the umbrella of the Al-liance Career Center offers a two-year LPN course of study and offers day and evening classes, and the Early Childhood Alliance Inc., which promotes and creates dynamic learning environments for children.

Organization endowment funds also have supported charity and capital improvement projects for the Alli-ance Symphony, Alliance Historical Society, Alliance Domestic Violence Shelter, Alliance YWCA, Alliance Neighborhood Center and Castle Crusaders.

Out of the $668,004 in grants awarded by the Greater Alliance Foundation in 2011-2012, approxi-mately half of those went to community causes with the remainder going towards educational causes, including scholarships and early childhood education.

park is the central location for many of the festival’s events, including Days in the Park, a three-day event that fea-tures booths by local organizations, craft-ers and food vendors. A balloon lift off, which brings dozens of hot air ballooners to Alliance, departs from Silver Park during the festival. Several local bands and musical groups energize the bandstand and generate a crowd of dancers. The Alliance Symphony Orchestra performs in the evenings at Days in the Park, and a pet show allows Alliance’s youth to parade their critters. Another popular portion of the Carnation Festival is the Rib Fest, a gathering of many rib vendors from far and wide who sell countless rib varieties to foodies in the parking lot of Carnation City Mall. Local bands perform and children’s booths are set up. Perhaps the crown-ing jewel of the Carnation Festival, the annual Queen’s Pageant is held on the first Sunday of the festival. Doz-ens of local young women vie for the title of Carnation queen, an honor that grants them VIP access to all of the festival’s events, several hundred of dollars’ worth of prizes, and the honor of representing the Carnation City. Locals participate in contests during the weeks of the Carnation Festival, including an amateur photography contest, a flower show, a youth sports event and a vin-tage base ball tournament, where the Alliance Crossing Rails compete against other Vintage Base Ball teams at Glamorgan Castle. Babies born at Alliance Commu-nity Hospital during the days of the festival are dubbed Carnation Babies and are given gift bags filled with gifts. Other events, ranging from parades and ice cream socials to a Pump-In and Muster are popular. Visits to some of Alliance’s most unique landmarks, ranging from Glamorgan Castle and Alliance City Cemetery, or hours sifting through various used books at Rodman Public Library’s annual sale are also Carnation Festival favorites. The Greater Alliance Area Carnation Festival has some-thing for everyone, kids and adults, sports fans and art connoisseurs. Yearly festivities are planned by the Festival Board, which consists of community members serving

in various positions. Each year the festival board president, vice presi-

AMERICA’S LARGEST CAT MUSEUM

Despite being in existence for more than two de-cades, the Cat Fanciers’ Association Foundation finally found a physical home in downtown Alliance.

With the goal of preserving the history of the cat, the CFA Foundation opened its Feline Historical Museum in the ground floor of the former Midland-Buckeye Fed-eral Savings and Loan building in downtown Alliance in 2010, when its sister organization, the Cat Fanciers’ Association, purchased the building at 260 E. Main St.

None of this would have been possible had it not been for a bequeathal from the estate of Wilton E. Wheeldon and her mother, which also included a gen-erous donation as well as an enormous collection of cat figurines, collectibles and artwork.

pouring in, including in the form of teapots, dolls and other types of memorabilia.

After hearing about the opening of the museum, the Foundation was contacted by Donald Hargrove of Memphis, who volunteered to donate his entire collec-tion of Maneki Nekos, numbering approximately 165 of them in all shapes, sizes, colors patterns and materials.

The walls of the museum are covered in a variety of artwork in all mediums: photographs by well-known cat photographers, paintings by CFA judges such as George Summerville and Bob Bryan, prints of Yearbook covers by Govinder Nazran and Jamie Perry, intaglias by Mel and Jan Fleck, paintings and prints by a pleth-ora of recognized artists, and an 1846 hand block print from Germany. A highlight of the artwork is a full-size photograph of the 100 Cats Scroll presented to CFA during their centen-nial year, according to museum manager Karen Lawrence.

In addition to plenty of rare treasures, like a bronze by renowned sculptor J. Clayton Bright of a silver tabby Persian, the only cat that he has ever produced, the museum occa-sionally is visited by live cats. In the past, visiting Maine Coons and Ragdolls have run the museums, delighting visitors with hugs and play. And, Egyptian Maus and Japanese Bobtails have also showed off their feline agility skills.

Also not to be forgotten is the museum’s non-lending library and research room, which contains more than 1,400 books cataloged by title and available for on-site review.

Amidst its offerings, the library houses books from CFA, TICA and ACFA, including studbooks, as well as periodicals, breed newsletters and foreign publications.

Alliance Historical Black History Museum - “To know where we are going, we need to know where we are coming from.” This was the purpose be-hind the opening of this museum, which houses showcases on black residents from the Alliance area, including the city’s first black physician K.T. Thompson; Curvis Rhyne, whose 48 years on city council made him one of Ohio’s longest-serving public servants; and Charlie Everett, whose flamboyant style of directing traffic on State Street became a national sensation, earning him a stint on “Candid Camera.” Tributes to inventors, music, authors as well as state and national politics also can be found within this museum’s walls. World War History and Art Museum - The World War History and Art Museum features World War I and World War II relics, original art by those who served, newspaper archives, a display honoring the legacy of local veter-ans, war-era toy soldiers, an exhibit featuring women in the war and photographs. Guides give the contextual significance of the soldiers, battles and circumstances behind each artifact. The museum is located at 1300 E. State St. in Alliance, within the College Plaza. HISTORICAL SITES

Alliance City Cemetery - Alliance City Cemetery is a perfect place to learn Alliance’s buried history. Tours are given by cemetery historian John Gross, who focuses on cemetery architecture, burial customs and the great tales of the people who developed the city of Alliance. Glamorgan Castle - Built in 1904 by Col. William Henry Morgan, Glamorgan Castle is one of Alliance’s most well-known landmarks. Tours, given by the Castle Cru-saders, are offered to the public and highlight rooms decorated in Italian Renaissance, French Empire, Louis XV, Elizabethan and Japanese styles. Named after the birthplace of Morgan’s father, Glamorgan County in Wales, U.K., the castle sits on 50 acres with 100 tons

of structural steel and 96 train car loads of Vermont marble. Though the estate is now home to Alliance City Schools, tours are offered by the Castle Crusaders.

Haines House - The Alliance Area Preservation Society maintains the Haines House, an Underground Railroad site located in Alliance. The house, owned by Jonathan Ridgeway Haines and Sarah Grant Haines, provided a safe haven for fugitive slaves but also served as a meeting place for many abolitionist gatherings. A well-documented young people’s meeting was held there in 1859 along with several other abolitionist conventions throughout the 1860s. The preservation society offers tours to visitors who will see a traditional 1800s home, arefuge area where slaves were hidden and several pe-riod toys, including a doll that was used to signal danger to entering slaves. Mabel Hartzell Historical Home - The Mabel Hartzell Historical Home was the home of Mabel Hartzell, a signifi-cant woman in Alliance who helped to found the Alli-ance Historical Society. Hartzell bequeathed her home and its contents to the Historical Society to be maintained as a museum for future generations. The Victorian-style home offers a glimpse of life in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and the society has many more photographs,

And, the Friends of Alliance Parks is a key supporter of the parks system, annu-ally donating time and money to support special parks and recreation programs and projects, such as an annual Easter Egg Hunt

In addition to its parks, the Alliance City Cemetery provides

PARKS & RECREATIONThe Department of Parks, Recreation and Public

Lands maintains 220 acres consisting of 24 parks and parklands, ranging from small neighborhood green spaces to the 60-acre Butler-Rodman Park complex.

Butler Rodman is located in the 2200 block of West State Street and has a vast array of picnic shelters avail-able thanks to the generosity of the community’s social organizations. However, its athletic fields are a popular draw for local teams as well as tournament play. Base-ball, softball and soccer players enjoy their top notch fields and the volleyball courts also are a popular draw.

The hard work of city’s park employees also are re-flected in parks like Maple Beach and Earley Hill parks, where their beautifully maintained athletic fields and basketball courts get a lot of play.

That trend continues at Memorial Park, which greets visitors across the street from McDonald’s as they first enter the city limits on U.S. Route 62. While it, like the oth-ers, includes the venues for the traditional park favorites, Memorial also features community additions of a disc golf course and the Rotary skate park.

Silver Park, which is located in the 2000 block of South Union Avenue, is considered the crown jewel of the Alliance parks’ district with its rolling hills and vast green landscape that serves as the perfect site to either picnic or watch the city’s annual fireworks dis-play. Some of the more unique rental facilities within city parks can be found there, including a cozy shelter positioned next to a public amphitheater or a log cabin perched upon a hill looking down towards Kidwell Lake.

Despite all the other city green spaces brighting up the somewhat urban landscape of the Carnation City, one cannot help by be amazed when watching the evolution of Thompson-Snodgrass Park, positioned in one of the oldest areas of the city.

This “Little Park That Could” has evolved into one of the city’s most unique and welcoming stops within the sys-tem. Brightly colored murals and playground equipment provide an exciting diversion from enjoying a nice picnic under the roof of the large pavilion, which serves as a reminder of community commitment.

Stark Parks — Stark Parks, the park district maintained by Stark County, preserves a dozen area parks and sixteen trailheads. The parks surrounding Alliance, Deer Creek Reservoir, Walborn Reservoir and Molly Stark Park, provide parklands perfect for hiking, fishing and sightsee-ing. Molly Stark Park in Louisville was purchased in 2009 and is the site of a former hospital. The park offers picnic areas, hiking trails and open areas. The Rodman Public Library can no longer be called an undiscovered gem, as more members of the public are utilizing its services than ever before.

This past year, the library system was honored as the Large Business of the Year by the Alliance Area Chamber of Commerce — not too bad for a library system that was born out of a room in Alliance High School in 1900.

Clarence J. “Bill” Rodman’s support more than 50 years ago gave the Alliance library, which emerged in the early stages with the help of Andrew Carnegie, gave the impetus for expansion and for a facility that has served the community well.

Ground at the current location was broken in 1961, and the library system has continued to grow, adding public computers, a bookmobile and even-tually its branch location for patrons on East State Street as the city contin-ued to develop around it.

Rodman has a significant children’s room, which was created in 1927 to allow patrons under the age of 14 to have their own, separate area. Now, as society continues to evolve and create a niche market for teen patrons, the library’s staff hopes to add a special area for them.

However, adults still continue to be important patrons of the library, enjoy-ing access to Braille books, books on CD, tape, music CDs, magazines, DVDs and audiovisual materials as well as a fax machine, notary public, photo-copier and even important forms for voter registration and filing local, state and federal taxes.

For those who have trouble making it to the main or branch libraries, Rod-man employees can bring the library to you via its Bookmobile, which makes regular stops at local schools and scheduled locations through its rotating two-week route, or its home delivery services. Founded by a patient, the Planetree Model is com-mitted to enhancing healthcare from the patient’s perspective. It empowers patients and families through information and education, and encourages “healing partnerships” with caregivers to support active par-ticipation. Through organizational transformation, the Planetree Model creates healing environments in which patients can be active participants and caregivers are enabled to thrive.

A non-profit hospital founded in 1901, ACH is licensed for 204 beds, including 78 nursing home and transition-al-care beds that are found in the attached long-term care facility, Community Care Center. ACH is fully accredited by The Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program and offers a medical staff of more than 150 active and covering physicians.

ACH has centers in cardiopulmonary services, sleep disorders, digestive health, pain medicine and critical care. However, its emergency services department probably sees the most regular visitors.

Karen Abraham, ACH’s emergency room clinical coordinator, explained that physicians and nurses are specially trained to assist with all types of emergencies 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Wednesdays and weekends are notoriously busy as doctors’ office tend to be closed, so personnel sees everything from minor to life-threatening injuries.

Upon arrival at the ER, patients first encounter triage, which is a system of prioritizing order for treatment based on the seriousness of their injuries. It is not first-come,

first-served but instead assures that emergency experts work as efficiently as possible. There also is a Clinical Decision Unit, which provides a 24-hour observation for patients not ready to be discharged but not required to be admitted.

“Emergency work is what we love; but we anticipate with the changes in health care, there will be continued increase in non-urgent care,” Abraham said. However,

she said the hospital is constantly expanding and im-proving to provide the best possible health care, which allows its patients to truly “experience health caring.”

While most hospitals have a 90-minute average turnaround in time for ER treatment, Alliance hospital patients usually get in 20 minutes quicker. “Our average is in the 70s,” Abraham said.

Abraham is particularly proud of Alliance Community Hospital’s ability to diagnose

and deal with heart attacks. “They do a phenomenal job with this. It is a top

priority when your heart is in trouble. We need to take action quickly after they come in to stabilize and send them to Canton if need be.”

She acknowledges that a great deal of the hospital’s ER clientele is out of work and out of money, but she said that doesn’t affect one’s

ability to get treatment. Alliance Community Hospital eventu-

ally is compensated through the Hospital Care Assurance Program (HCAP), which is

Ohio’s version of the federally required Dispro-portionate Share Hospital program. The program

The hospital recently improved its treatment of neu-rological and gastrointestinal issues. However, Abra-ham acknowledged that some of the hardest cases to handle are addiction-related.

“With pa-tients involved with drug and alcohol issues, you worry about their safety. We don’t have a social worker assigned to our ER; however, our nurses often end up becoming those social workers. We cannot take a chance something will happen when you are dealing with people who are suicidal, but the family is crucial to our work with the chronically ill,” Abraham said.

In regards to the superusers, she believes educa-tion plays a large role in improving the system. “Patient education is needed to help them understand illnesses, whatever they may be.”

That also is part of the Planetree patient culture: look-ing at the patient as a whole instead of just his or her ill-ness. Educational services include diabetes education, community support groups, community seminars and individualized patient education.

Alliance Community Hospital also specializes in long-term, outpatient, surgical, senior and wound care as well as offering more non-traditional therapies, such as aromatherapy, deep-tissue massage and Reiki.

Alliance High School students earn post-secondary opportunities through the district’s numerous agreements with entities like the University of Mount Union, Stark State College, Kent State University, The University of Akron, Youngstown State University, The Art Institute of Pittsburgh and Hocking College.

For those who choose a voca-tional career path, in addition to the Broadcast Arts program, the district offers tech-prep programs for fields like automotive technol-

ogy, automotive collision repair, computer support and services,

construction trades, cosmetology, financial services and risk manage-

ment, health services and athletic training, horticulture and landscape design, integrated

media, welding and fabricating. This is in addition to its offerings of vocal or instrumen-

tal music, including one of Stark County’s only orchestra programs; more than 18 varsity and junior varsity athlet-ic programs, and award-winning Academic Challenge and Destination Imagination teams.

And, early on Alliance City Schools concentrate on transitioning its littlest students at the Early Learning School (preschool and Kindergarten) to one of the dis-trict’s three elementary schools (Northside, Parkway or Rockhill) and into its middle school facility for grades 6-8 with a team focus. The goal is a collaborative educational approach assisted with parental input, which will allow students to adjust to the ever-chang-ing world while growing into the best citizens they can possibly be.

The Alliance City School District competes in extensive interscholastic athletic programs under the directives of the Ohio High School Athletic Association in grades 7-12. These programs include track, cross country, wrestling, football, basketball, golf, volleyball, and cheerleading in high school and middle school. The Marlington Local School District has a unique story, emerging as the creation of one school district to educate young residents of three townships in eastern Stark County (Marlboro, Lexington and Washington).

“A Tradition of Excellence, a Commitment to the Future” is the focus of the school district, which has a combined middle and high school campus, and an elementary school in each of the three townships.

The district has developed a tradition of being a high academic performer, which has repeatedly reflected excellent ratings on the State of Ohio report cards in comparison to other school districts.

In 2013, Marlington schools completed its third year in the Race to the Top grant program funded by the Ohio Department of Education, which helps to trail-blaze effective reforms through adopting standards and as-sessments for post-secondary success, measure student growth as well as recruit and retain exceptional teach-ers and administrators.

Ultimately, the state looks to increase graduation rates while reducing graduation rate gaps, reduce perfor-mance gaps (especially between the State of Ohio and the best-performing states in the nation) and double col-lege enrollment among those at ages 18 and 19.

The district strives to adhere to its mission statement, which says: “In collaboration with staff, community, parents and students, the Marlington Local School District will develop lifelong learners who understand and apply knowledge, and demonstrate excellence in pursuing the highest standards with effective interven-tion to challenge every student.”

This past year, Marlington schools added technol-ogy that allows them to text parents’ homework on a nightly basis as well as students to use their own devic-es, such as iPods, laptops and tablets in the classroom.

Orville Nelson Hartshorn had a vision for the future. He saw an institution that focused on providing great opportuni-ties, emphasized both the sciences and humanities and welcomed diversity amongst all of its constituents.

In 1846, Hartshorn made this vision a reality as he took the lead in establishing a place where exceptional begins.

On October 20, 1846, with just six students, Hartshorn organized and taught the first class of this new institu-tion. By 1858 the institution was chartered and incor-porated under the laws of the State of Ohio as “Mount Union College.”

Mount Union has seen exponential growth over the

years while remaining true to its heritage and tradition. To better reflect the Mount Union of today and all of the opportunities that the institution offers to its students, a change was made from a “college” to a “university” designation in 2010.

The beautiful 123-acre campus in Alliance, Ohio is conveniently located between Cleveland and Pitts-burgh and more than $100 million has been invested in the construction and renovation of modern facilities throughout the course of the past decade. The new Gal-laher Hall facility, being built on Union Avenue, will house Mount Union’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program, as well as possible future health-related programs. In addition, it will become the new home to the University’s master’s program in physician assistant studies, currently located in Bracy Hall, which enrolls more than 60 stu-dents and welcomed its fifth cohort in May 2013.

Work has also started on the University’s new Performing Arts Center. Students majoring and/or minoring in art, theatre, music, music education and music per-formance as well those partici-pating in the arts at the

co-curricular level will ben-efit from this modernized and renovated facility. The center will include a new lobby, proscenium theatre, black box theatre, green room, scene shop, costume shop, dressing area, art gallery and choir room as well as a renovated band room.

The University also includes the Huston-Brumbaugh Nature Center, located six miles south of campus. The Nature Center provides education-al opportunities for Mount Union students as well as community outreach through program-ming and partnerships with local school districts.

With a current enrollment of 2,096 under-graduate and 91 graduate students, the University maintains the small school atmo-sphere that so many students and alumni have cherished during their time spent at Mount Union.

Mount Union faculty, staff and students continu-ally work to help enhance the Alliance community, volunteering to assist numerous community partners including the Alliance Community Pantry, Interfaith Childcare, the Early Childhood Education Alliance, the United Way of Greater Stark County, Alliance Commu-nity Hospital and the Alliance Salvation Army, to name a few.
