Traditionally, these first pages of our annual report have offered a message of gratitude from our board chair, thanking you for your support of the GSA Foundation and the SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities (SCGSAH) this past year.
This year, our opening and closing messages of appreciation come directly from the young, artistically talented artists we are able, honored and committed to serve because of your support.
We are pleased to share their stories of success, repeat their words of appreciation for the artistic community in which they thrive, and to let you know that your commitment to support the Governor’s School for the Arts is meaningful and appreciated.
Simply said, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

The following was written by
Shawn McClary (Visual Arts, 2015)
to Max Metcalf, BMW Community
and Government Relations
Director, expressing gratitude to
BMW for the meal plan scholarship
support they provided last year.
Shown here with some of his automotive design drawings, after graduating in May, Shawn McClary was a featured speaker at a STEAM program
presentation at the Williamsburg County Library.
The offering was funded by the SC State Library with a goal to enlighten school children
about science, technology, engineering, art and math.
Shawn continues to serve as a terrific ambassador for SCGSAH.
February 10, 2015
Dear Mr. Metcalf,My name is Shawn McClary, and I’m a visual arts senior at the S.C. Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities
here in Greenville. And I’m something else: an aspiring automotive designer. Since I was a kid growing up in the
little town of Kingstree, S.C., I’ve wanted to be involved in creating the design of a car. Thanks to you and the
Governor’s School, I have my chance.
With your support, I’ve been able to develop my passion for the automotive industry and my love of art and
design. At the Governor’s School, I’m challenged daily to work to my greatest potential. And I just wanted to
take this opportunity to thank you and BMW for helping me and others in our school follow our dreams. Frankly,
without the support of corporations like BMW, I might not be able to attend a place like this. Thank you for being
a flagship corporation for funding here at Governor’s School.
Here’s the good news… with your help, along with the intense training I get here, I’ve been accepted into the
College for Creative Studies for Transportation Design in Detroit. Hopefully, it’s just another step on the way to
my dream of automotive design, a step you helped make possible.
I’ve learned that it’s important to keep working, studying, drawing and balancing my academics along with my
arts classes. The Governor’s School has truly educated me, not only in design, but in the discipline I need to be
successful. I’m lucky that BMW has been a partner in my journey.
Thank you again.
Sincerely,
Shawn McClary
PS More good news! I just found out I’m a semifinalist in the 2015 Detroit Autorama Design Competition. I’m
heading to Detroit soon! Thanks again.

The newest addition to the Governor’s School campus was completed in
December of 2014. Guests to our campus are now welcomed into the lobby
of the Visitor’s Center and will find an impressive collection of alumni artwork
and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking beautiful Falls Park.
The street level of the building houses the Office of Admissions, the Outreach
Department, Marketing & PR, and the Foundation. The terrace level solved
an urgent need for storage space for dance costumes, drama stage props, and
the costume shop with its sewing machines and fabric dyeing facilities.
Connecting the original campus to the Visitor’s Center is a lush garden
and walkway constructed of namesake bricks. Bricks are still available for
purchase on the GSA Foundation website www.gsafoundation.net.
If you haven’t stopped by to see this new building, please do. We would love
to give you a tour!

The Governor’s School for the Arts Foundation hosted Artists in Bloom,
on Wednesday, April 22 at the ONE Building in downtown Greenville.
Presented by TD Bank, Artists in Bloom replaces the GSA Foundation’s
long-standing spring fundraiser, Leadership Tribute. Broadly supported
across the state, the cocktail event celebrated the talents and
successes of current Govie students and featured music, dance and
drama student performances, as well as exhibits of work by the school’s
creative writing and visual arts students.
Two acclaimed Governor’s School alumnae were present to accept
the President’s Young Alumni Award, presented by Governor’s School
president Dr. Bruce Halverson.
Actress Nicole Beharie, class of 2003 from Orangeburg, is a 2007
graduate of the prestigious Juilliard School’s Drama Division. Beharie’s
most recent roles include Abbie Mills on the Fox television series Sleepy Hollow and Jackie Robinson’s wife, Rachel, in the film 42.
Violinist Maggie Gould is a Greenville native and 2008 Governor’s
School graduate. Since graduating from the music program at
Northwestern University in 2012, Gould, who resides in New York City,
claims an impressive professional resume, including gigs with Stevie
Wonder in Madison Square Garden and NBC’s Late Night with Jimmy
Fallon alongside Elvis Costello and The Roots.

Class of 2015 Pays it ForwardWhen the 2015 seniors learned of Dr. Bruce
Halverson’s plan to retire as President at the end
of the school year, they were inspired to consider
how they might show their appreciation for him.
Motivated to pay tribute to both Dr. Halverson
and their school, the Class of 2015 resolved to
establish a scholarship fund in Dr. Halverson’s
honor as their senior class gift.
Inspired by the students’ fundraising initiative
and their heartfelt intention to “pay it forward,”
the community responded generously. It wasn’t
long before the minimum was met to establish
the named endowed fund in GSA Foundation’s
endowment. By the end of the fiscal year, gifts
and pledges exceeded $100,000.
The Class of 2015 established a lasting legacy to
their school in acknowledgement of the incredible
experiences they each enjoyed as students.
Their generous gift will provide for future
Governor’s School students who may require
financial assistance to pay their meal plan fees,
the only cost to attend the school.
In May, Nancy & Erwin Maddrey hosted a beautiful garden receptionhonoring Dr. Halverson. The evening was a wonderful occasion for current and past school and foundation board members and friends to toast Dr. Halverson and honor his outstanding 8-year tenure as President of SCGSAH.

T H R O U G H I N S T R U M E N T S O F T H E PastThanks to the generosity of Lillian Darby and others, GSA Foundation’s new Tom and Debra
Strange Endowed Fund was established in 2014.
Tom Strange has a long practiced hobby of refurbishing, rebuilding and restoring antique
keyboard instruments. His passion for historic keyboard instruments compelled him
to become a collector, and now he owns 25 antique pianos and five harpsichords. The
instruments comprise the Carolina Clavier Collection, the largest collection of historic
keyboard instruments in the southeast.
The Strange endowed fund helps assure that piano students at the Governor’s School have
the opportunity to learn about historical instruments from guest artists and to perform
on the Carolina Clavier Collection. In addition to this unique study opportunity, the
endowment will also provide scholarship assistance for the school’s piano students in need.

Bob Hughes has a passion for enriching the quality of life for citizens across South
Carolina.
To that end, Bob understands the unique, remarkable significance that the Governor’s
School offers, not only to the students it serves, but to the whole Palmetto State.
Beginning from the school’s very infancy, Bob’s visionary leadership, an entrepreneurial
mindset, and his enthusiasm for the arts were hallmarks of his service and dedication to the
remarkable campus and programs that embody the Governor’s School today.
Always placing the students at the center of his commitment, Bob used his experience and
wisdom to continuously move the school forward, devoting countless hours serving on the
SCGSAH Board of Directors while generously supporting the programs of the foundation.
In July 2015, after serving more than 9 years as Chair of the SCGSAH Board of Directors,
Bob made the decision to pass the school board’s leadership gavel to Dick Elliott. We
join the school board in expressing our sincere, heartfelt gratitude to Bob Hughes for his
exceptional service and commitment to the Governor’s School.
Thank you for everything, Bob.

….in closing2014-2015 was an amazing and exciting year for the Governor’s School and GSA Foundation, and we see a very bright future ahead for 2015-2016.
We are privileged to work alongside you as we strive to provide opportunities for the next generation of South Carolina’s young artists, assuring that our future leaders will be disciplined, accomplished and creative thinkers.
Special thanks to our dedicated board members, volunteer advisory board members, event sponsors, our faithful donors, generous grant makers, and staff. We appreciate the strong partnerships we enjoy with students, faculty, parents and school staff that make our work meaningful and fun.
If you are still wondering if your support of the Governor’s School and GSA Foundation makes a difference, we conclude our report with this note received recently from one of our alumni, Charleston native Dr. Ashley Jordan Ferira (2003, Music):
“I am indebted for my invaluable SCGSAH education. I can confidently say that it was the unique combination of stellar music training and academics that allowed me to rise above the competition to be accepted to and excel at The University of Pennsylvania and beyond, in both my professional and personal endeavors. When taken advantage of, an education from SCGSAH organically equips you and propels you up for a successful, professional trajectory. For that, I am truly grateful.”
Meet the new P R E S I D E N T
After completing a national search, in
July 2015, Dr. Cedric Adderley was
selected as the new President of the South
Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts
and Humanities by unanimous vote of the
SCGSAH Board of Directors.
Not only is Dr. Adderley a distinguished
educator, but he is also a well respected
musician and composer.
As an accomplished arts and academic leader,
Dr. Adderly will help continue the excellence
of SCGSAH as the nation’s premiere public
residential high school for the arts, while
leading SCGSAH to grow its reputation as a
leader in arts education.

“Through Dr. Farmer, I have been exposed to
a new art: the art of science. For the first time
I see science not as a subject to be learned,
but an art to be explored.” Alexis Bass, Music,
Class of 2002
Mike Farmer was part of the SCGSAH
campus from Day One. When Virginia
Uldrick was building her dream team faculty
for the Governor’s School in 1999, she knew
exactly the right man for the job as Chair
of the Science Department. Throughout
his tenure, Dr. Farmer was known for
incorporating the arts into his classroom in
ways that were relevant to the needs of our
artistically talented students.
Dr. Farmer is greatly missed. His legacy will
live on through the hundreds of Governor’s
School students he taught and the staff and
faculty who enjoyed his friendship.
Ashley Jordan Ferira, PhD, RD is currently working in Irvine, CA as Principal Scientist at Arbonne International, where she is a leader in nutraceutical product innovation and formulation, cutting edge nutrition research and wellness communications. Dr. Ferira was one of 10 nutrition professionals chosen to serve at the 2015 Special Olympics as a Healthy Athletes volunteer, providing health promotion services to the 7,000 athletes competing in Los Angeles. After graduating from U Penn in 2007 with a BA in Biology and double minor in Nutrition and Music, Dr. Ferira completed her PhD in Nutrition at the University of Georgia in 2011, where she researched the role of vitamin D on cardiometabolic risk for her dissertation research as part of the largest pediatric vitamin D intervention trial in history.
