President’s Report

It is with pleasure that I present the President’s Report for the 2014-2015 Institute of Quarrying annual report.

The Australian economy is slow, with the mining boom a distant memory, but we do see some bright spots in the construction industry, with an expected long term high demand for constructions materials in New South Wales. Steady growth in Victoria and Queensland is being encountered, however the other states are not experiencing the same growth rate unfortunately. We have also seen continued restructuring occur in our industry, with mergers and acquisitions happening and changes to our management, both in the office and at the “quarry face”. This has impacted on our capacity to attend training courses, PDP’s etc, with actual numbers down compared to previous years. We are all in the productivity drive, with the pressures of change upon us.

Meanwhile the membership of the IQA has continued to grow past 1600 at the time of writing this report, and especially good to see people committing to renewing their subscription.

Our National Office team, have been working hard to support our members, branches, sub-branches, the Young Members network (‘YMN’) and now also Women in Quarrying. A highlight this year was the restart of Branch meetings in Darwin. I sincerely thank you all for your hard work and volunteered time to make that dinner meeting happen for all. It’s all about the people of our industry.

The IQA has been working on developing and implementing our Education products and services to our members and industry partners, with some new PDP’s, booklets and products either launched or in the development phase. Our education products are soon to be rolled out in New Zealand in the spirit of professional sharing with other Institute of Quarrying. The IQA’s suit of webinars (wPDPs) continues to meet the needs of the professional development market all achieved through support the participants receive from Ryan Spence and our IQA Facilitators. We have seen the highly successful Safety Seminars, started out in Brisbane some 13 years ago, now spread to other branches. Safety is the first thing we should think about whenever a task is planned.

Our premium industry event, the 58th IQA Conference in Adelaide, has a program of speakers that I am sure will “hit the mark” and another Quarry Demonstration visit, plus we have our Industry awards. I hope delegates enjoy this conference, please make sure you thank our valued Sponsors, IQA GM Paul Sutton, Branch Chair- Andrew Wilson and the organizing committee for their hard work, backed up by our PCO All Occasions Management. It’s easy to attend these events but there’s a lot of hard work that goes on in the background.

I would like to highlight and thank the AIQEF and its board for continuing

to support the Industry as a whole with further funding for development of Education products/services and funding to assist in the delivery of specialist technical talks at both seminars and meetings. We could not operate at the level we do without their ongoing support.

The board , advisory council, and national office have continued down the path of reviewing management structures, policies, governance, administration, auditing and the overall “How we do things” to ensure we are as streamlined as possible but compliant to the company and corporation laws. I thank our hardworking company Secretary Rod Lester, for guiding us through this workload. It was especially pleasing to hear that our new MYOB cloud system is working, with the accounts and budget process streamlined, and our Institute budget in the black, thanks to the efforts of Paul Sutton, John Olive, Gemma Thursfield for managing the accounts. The National

team is here to support “you the members and branches”. In this report you will see a summary of what your branch has been doing. I encourage you to stay engaged.

In closing I would like to thank and acknowledge the many

sponsors and suppliers, year after year the IQA has benefited from your support, and this cannot be highlighted enough.

My term as President is coming to an end, I would like to thank the board, advisory council, national office, branches, sub-branches and members for your support. I would also like to recognise the board/ advisory council members who are standing down at this year’s AGM. I should acknowledge my place of work, Atlas Copco Australia, in allowing me to carry out the role of President. It’s been an honor to represent the IQA and I think we should be proud of our industry, an industry where everyone uses the products we make, everyday.

Stay safe!

John StantonIQA President

According to legend, Thomas Edison made thousands of prototypes of the incandescent light bulb before he finally got it right. And, since the prolific inventor was awarded more than 1,000 patents, it’s easy to imagine him failing on a daily basis in his lab at Menlo Park.In spite of struggling with “failure” throughout his entire working life, Edison never let it get the best of him. All of these “failures,” which are reported to be in the tens of thousands, simply showed him how not to invent something. His resilience gave the world some of the most amazing inventions of the early 20th century, such as the phonograph, the telegraph, and the motion picture.

It’s hard to imagine what our world would be like if Edison had given up after his first few failures. His inspiring story forces us to look at our own lives – do we have the resilience that we

need to overcome our challenges in the quarrying industry? Or do we let our failures derail our dreams?

I believe the members of the IQA are demonstrating the same level of resilience as that of Thomas Edison. Times are very tough but our members continue to fight on doing the best they can with the available opportunities and resources. It is because of this resilience that the IQA has continued to grow in membership, increase membership networking opportunities and expand on our suite of education programs and publications.

I take this opportunity to thank each and every IQA member who has supported the IQA in any capacity during the 2014-2015 year. The only aim I have for my role is to always ensure value and relevance of the IQA to our members and potential members. Without value and relevance to our current and future members, I have failed in my duties. If you have a suggestion on how I can improve the IQA, please do not hesitate to contact me. I would love to hear from you. Please join me now to celebrate some of the successes of 2014-2015.

NEW MEMBERSHIP MILESTONE FOR THE IQA

By 30 June 2015, the IQA achieved a new membership milestone by having 1,622 financial members officially recorded on our database. Please accept my sincere thanks to all who joined the IQA during this period. It is a very big thank you to all who continue to renew their membership on an annual basis.

2014 CMIC14 CONFERENCE

Congratulations to the IQA’s Queensland Branch for hosting a very successful conference in Brisbane in September 2014. The conference was well attended with excellent feedback received from conference delegates. This conference even made the front page of the Financial Review!

2014-2015 IQA NATIONAL PLATINUM SPONSORS

I take this opportunity to thank and acknowledge our national platinum sponsors. The IQA certainly values your ongoing support and contributions to our industry.

I wish to thank the Australian Institute of Quarrying Education Foundation (AIQEF) for their continued financial support in developing new products for our members and industry.

In conclusion, thank you IQA membership for a fantastic year. You are a joy to work for and I look forward to taking on the future challenges with you all. For those of you who have tirelessly committed time and energy to the success of the IQA, I sincerely thank you.

Adam BertramACT Branch Chair

Early this year our Chair, Glen Catanzariti, left our shores to work in the United Kingdom. On behalf of the IQA’s ACT Branch I wish to convey my thanks to Glen for the excellent leadership and support he provided to our Branch. I accepted the challenge as the new Chair in early March 2015 and am fortunate to receive valuable support from my committee.

We successfully scheduled two events on the calendar for this financial year. In September 2014, we held a well-attended and successful dinner meeting in Canberra. This event was well-received by our members given the quality of the key note speaker in regards to the impact of new legislation. In May 2015, the Branch hosted the Introduction to Quarry Products PDP at the Coomera Quarry. The PDP was well attended and the feedback was excellent.

On behalf of the committee of the IQA’s ACT Branch, I would like to thank everyone for their support and encouragement during the past year. I am always on the lookout for new ideas to promote member engagement and look forward to any feedback provided.

Australian Capital Territory Branch

It is with great pleasure that I report that the IQA’s Northern Territory Branch was resurrected in late 2014. The quarrying industry is alive and well in the Northern Territory and through the encouragement and support of Paul Sutton, IQA’s General Manager, we were able to breathe life into a pre-existing IQA Branch.

To date we have held three very successful dinner meetings in Darwin. Each dinner meeting has had good attendance with the audience composition made up of industry, supplier and regulatory personnel. The feedback from delegates has been extremely positive with most appreciating the opportunity to get together socially to receive a combination of professional development and industry networking in a supportive and encouraging environment.

The IQA’s Northern Territory Branch is canvassing the industry, suppliers and regulatory body on ideas for future events to enhance the foundation work of the refurbished Branch.

New South Wales BranchThe NSW Branch consists of five sub-branches. At the state level, we hold three distinct events. Each of the sub-branches hold up to four events per year. Hence, across the NSW Branch region, up to 23 events are held each year, on behalf of the IQA, not including PDP courses. As a volunteer not-for-profit organisation, this draws on a lot of volunteer’s time and effort. While we frequently pat ourselves on the back for holding successful functions, we frequently forget to acknowledge all the effort that has gone into a function.

The Executive Committee have attended events in each sub-branch, over the past year.

The NSW Weekend Seminar returned to Coffs Harbour, this year. While attendance numbers were lower than the inaugural event, five years ago, the seminar was still well received and quite informative. A visit to a recently completed local civil infrastructure project was very enlightening. On the social front, the evening shooting and driving golf balls (golf balls into the lake, and laser guns), with pre-dinner drinks and canapés was a refreshing alternative to our usual sit down alternate drop style evening.

The Health & Safety Seminar, held once again in Newcastle, was a very successful follow up to last year’s seminar. Numbers grew marginally. A change of venue proved challenging, but all the feedback has been very positive. It will be difficult to maintain a similar level of presenters.

The Graduates Night goes from strength to strength. We had a much broader range of graduates, including our first from one of our independents. As always, the majors supported us strongly.

Last year’s annual report spoke glowingly of our “combined” annual Construction Materials Industry Dinner. On a personal note, as the sole member of the organising committee, throughout our association with CCAA on this event, I have to express my disappointment at the IQA being disinvited, to this event. The NSW Branch has held a Construction Materials Dinner for decades, and many felt the change to the above name was, in essence, taking one of our branded events off us. We accepted the change and had worked hard to cooperate on this event. To have our involvement withdrawn after a number of years of cooperation has caused some concern (and confusion) amongst a number of our members.

We are blessed by Nikki Huthnance’s assistance and patience in our endeavours.

Finally, I must acknowledge (as we have forgotten to, a few times) the support of the AIQEF. In the past year, the NSW Branch has been generously supported by funding from the AIQEF at each of our state functions. While we always acknowledge this verbally at these functions, we have been remiss, on more than one occasion, in publicly acknowledging this in our reports submitted to the Quarry magazine.

7

Central West Sub-Branch

After an extremely busy year in 2013/2014 with all the great work that our members did launching the Participatory Ergonomics program, the last 12 months has been a chance to catch our breath and focus on a range of non-safety related matters. Three well attended meetings were held during the year, as follows:

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Our AGM was held on 19 September 2014 at the east Guyong Quarry, with the majority of the committee renominating and being returned. The position of Treasurer was relinquished (to be looked after by Nikki Huthnance, the NSW Admin Support guru).

In its place, Alasdair Webb nominated for and accepted the position of Deputy Chair of the sub-branch. The Technical meeting included a site inspection of the newly commissioned East Guyong Quarry. Pere Rinii, manager of the quarry, then lead an interesting discussion on the trials and tribulations of obtaining development approval for the quarry, including the extraordinary lengths that Hanson has gone to ensure that naturally occurring asbestos that occurs on site is appropriately managed.

DINNER MEETING

Our second meeting on 17 March 2015 focused on industrial relations, with Senior Deputy President Jonathan Hamberger of the Fair Work Commission taking time out from hearings in Orange to share his wisdom on what works (and what does not!) when negotiating an enterprise bargaining agreement with your workforce. In summary, his advice was:• for both sides to be well informed; • to have clear goals and outcomes in mind from the outset; • to approach the negotiations with respect and honesty; and• to allow plenty of time for the negotiations.

Continuing the regulatory theme, the NSW EPA presented an overview of the then soon to be rolled out Risk-based Licencing scheme.

SITE TOUR

The final meeting for the year on 17 and 18 June 2015 was a little bit different, with the IQA teaming up with our mining cousins as part of the annual MEET (Mining and Extractive industries Environment Team) meeting in Mudgee. The meeting included a mine site tour of the

Ulan Cola Mine north of Mudgee and a day of presentations focusing on rehabilitation and mine/quarry closure. The meeting was timed to coincide with a PDP Mine Planning course in Orange on 19 June 2015.

CONCLUSION

Finally, I would like to acknowledge our fantastic committee:• Alasdair Webb (Deputy Chair),• Ron Dillon• Chris Cooke• Pere Rinii• Andrew Commins• Shane Burtonwho have provided invaluable service to the Sub-branch and support to myself. I would also like to acknowledge the support of the DPI who have been unwavering in their support for the Sub-branch, providing their meeting room on numerous occasions free of charge and enabling us to keep the registration costs down to a minimum.

8

Illawarra Sub-Branch

The Illawarra Sub – Branch had another successful year with the mighty Illawarra surpassing the 100 member mark, proving again to be one of the strongest identities of the IQA. This year we were very proud to upgrade several of our finest members to the rank of Fellow. For 2015 our members and guests were treated to three dinner meetings and our famous annual golf day.

DINNER MEETINGS

Our dinner meetings were held at three fantastic locations including Addison’s Seafood Restaurant, The Links Shell Cove and Mittagong RSL. Each venue offered both a comfortable atmosphere and a delicious meal that was enjoyed by all.

At each dinner meeting we were fortunate enough to have three terrific guest speakers that delivered high quality presentations on various topics. These speakers included James Moule from Honeywell Safety who discussed new innovations in safety equipment in the quarrying industry. Our mates from Statewide Bearings pulled all stops and delivered an informative PowerPoint on the goods and services that their company offered. This included a selection of “toys” that were available for all to play with on the night. Lastly Meg Bennett from Talis Training Services delivered an informative presentation on mental health in the workplace. Meg shared valuable information, statistics and available resources on this very important topic.

GOLF DAY

The annual golf day held at The Links was again the highlight for the Illawarra’s calendar year. A beautiful day with perfect conditions greeted all the excited golfers, who displayed some outstanding golfing abilities and others who would rather not discuss. Regardless everyone enjoyed the day’s events and networked well into the evening with a beverage of choice.

SPONSORSHIP

Lastly we would like to thank our generous sponsors from throughout the year’s events. Your contribution was a key element in the success of not only our events but also our sub – branch. We all sincerely thank you for your support and we look forward to continuing our relationship into the future.

Scott Tipping and Paul Mandeno maintained their positions as Chair and Deputy Chair respectively while Chris Hamilton replaced Danny Duke as Secretary.

• February 2015 Sydney jointly hosted a site visit to Gosford Sandstone dimension quarry. This included a tour of the facility followed by an onsite dinner and networking session.

• May 2015 seen the last tour of Penrith Lakes as an operational quarry. 34 people attended. A site tour was followed by a presentation on the rehabilitation and site operations by Penrith Lakes Operations Manager, Robert Golaszewski. Dinner and networking followed.

SUB-BRANCH HOSTING OF NSW BRANCH ACTIVITIESIn addition to conducting its own activities the Sydney Region Sub-branch hosted the 2014 NSW Graduation Dinner.• The Graduation Dinner was held

at Novotel Parramatta on 18 June with 64 members and guests in attendance. Certificate III and IV, Diploma and Advanced Diploma graduates received their certificates and acknowledgement from those in attendance. The evening was sponsored by Hitachi and the guest speaker was Brett Dunstan who was last year’s winner of the Alex North Over Award.

The SA Branch again had a very productive and successful year and our strategy to provide a relevant, well informed and respected forum for our members and industry partners to participate in networking, education and the development of the Young Member Network has paid off with our membership base remaining stable and all our planned functions well attended.

TECHNICAL SEMINAR

Our annual Technical Seminar was held in August at the Hackney Hotel and had over 40 members and guests attend. This event was again able to be undertaken with the financial support of the AIQEF and

our presenters who kindly donated their time and expertise.

The following topics were presented:• Drill and blast technology – Graham Gordon (Orica Quarry

Services)• Regulatory compliance – are you legal? – Ashley Watson (Piper

(MAQOSHC)• Latest crushing and screening equipment – Adam Gordon (Astec

Australia)• Off-line (static) motor diagnostic testing – Ryan McMurray (SKF

Victoria)• CPCMS promotion and education overview – Paul Sutton (IQA)

AGM DINNER

The AGM Dinner followed the Technical Seminar and was well patronized with over 80 guests in attendance.

A special presentation was given to Roger Rose upon his retirement from Cavpower. Roger has been a great supporter of our industry for many years and with the generosity of Cavpower, has been a major sponsor of the SA Branch and this support has gone a long way to ensuring that our branch remains viable. Roger was presented with a 20 year membership certificate, IQA tie and lanyard.

The SA Branch welcomed three new Committee members: Ben Davis (Boral), Darren Dunn (Holcim) and Michael Close (Southern Quarries).

The SA Branch welcomed three new Committee members: Ben Davis (Boral), Darren Dunn (Holcim) and Michael Close (Southern Quarries).

Outgoing tributes were given to both Andrew Graetz (former SA Chairman) and Neil Schlein as they were both stepping down from the SA Committee after many years valued service. A special presentation was also given to them both.

Matthew Clarke a former AFL player was the guest presenter for the dinner and gave an insightful presentation on his former AFL clubs and in particular the Adelaide Crows.

NOVEMBER BRANCH DINNER

Our regular November dinner meeting was held at the National Wine Centre and was the last function for 2014. Ali Clarke, a local Adelaide media celebrity was the guest presenter and engaged everyone with her inside look at the cut throat world of Breakfast Radio.

Xavier Montaner from Impact Drill & Blast availed himself of this opportunity and capped it off with several videos of complex blasting projects that had been undertaken by their company.

Fellowship badges were awarded to Peter Duffy and Andrew Geue who were most appreciative of this initiative.

MARCH SITE VISIT

Our first function for 2015 was a site visit to Cavpower’s new Component Rebuild Centre and had in excess of 50 attendees. The Facility was designed to service the full Cat product range, as well as equipment from other manufacturers. The workshops operate in a controlled air environment to ensure the highest contamination control levels. The Centre has the capability to test engines from all manufacturers with its dual 3,000hp and 6,000hp engine dynamometer test rigs, including high pressure gas engines. A 450hp hydraulic test bench has the capability to test all Cat and other makes of transmissions, torque converters, hydraulic pumps and motors. The new facility cost $25 million and the company expects it to support about 40 Jobs.

MAY BRANCH DINNER

The IQA SA Branch held their first dinner for the year at the Adelaide Oval in May 2015. A strong representation from members, sponsors, partners and invited guests enjoyed the dinner with over 95 in attendance.

The highlight of the night was a very informative presentation given by Clay Butler from BxF Consulting on the “Ice” epidemic that is now affecting workplaces, families and communities. Clay’s discussion which included graphic pictures and videos of the impacts of “Ice” on users was somewhat confronting but was very well received by the audience and a myriad of questions were asked by the attendees. The SA Branch would highly recommend this presentation to other Branches to host.

One of the SA Branch’s key sponsors, Impact Drill & Blast, took the opportunity to show the audience the advancements they have

made with the use of mobile communication devices to upload field data to a central point to alleviate some of the onerous paperwork trail. They also kindly donated some door prizes which well received by the winners.

Membership certificates were presented by Branch Chairman Andrew Wilson to:

• Matthew Williams – Student (Groundwork Plus) (left photo below)• Andrew Attwood – Associate (Lab SA) – (right photo below)

YMN UPDATE

The SA Branch continues to have a strong and active YMN under the guidance of Coordinator Ben Davis. Chairman Andrew Wilson accompanied Ben and several YMN members to two site visits throughout the year.

CONCLUSION

As Branch Chairman I would like to again thank the hardworking and enthusiastic group of volunteers who make up our “Committee”. This group of likeminded individuals generously donates their time to assist with the running of the SA Branch and I must also thank their respective employers for allowing them to do so.

The committee has focused very hard this year to keep the SA Branch up to date and relevant for our members and supporters. Thanks also go to our Branch Secretariat Marie Cunningham who pulls it all together and makes sure that everything we do runs smoothly. Increased attendances to functions, growing member numbers and positive feedback are a good measure of how well the SA team is doing.

A very special thank you to our Branch sponsors whose time and generosity enable us to continue to provide a quality forum for our members to learn, network, educate and participate.

STUDENT PRESENTATION NIGHT

Close to one hundred Members, students and their families gathered on 21 May at the Boulevard in Kew to celebrate one of the key events on the Victorian Branch calendar the annual Student Presentation Night.

The evening was an opportunity to recognise and celebrate students who have successfully completed Certificate 4 and Diploma qualifications in extractive industry. We were delighted to have seventeen students attend. We were also pleased that a number of students who were non members took up the offer of IQA membership.

Our guest speaker was Collingwood Premiership Captain Nick Maxwell. Nick gave an engaging and well received presentation on his journey from a struggling teenager who was knocked back by a number of AFL clubs before finally being drafted as a rookie in 2002 and eventually become an All Australian Premiership Captain. Nick’s story demonstrated what determination, persistence, courage, mental toughness and getting the best out of oneself can help achieve. His ability to remain mentally strong and focused through the initial setbacks is a strength he has carried throughout his AFL career and life. Nick also spoke of his current role as the Leadership Development Coach at the Melbourne Storm and how these skills can be applied to help be successful in any job.

Our appreciation is extended to Landair Surveys, Kinder & Co and the AIQEF for supporting the evening.

CHRISTMAS FUNCTION

Members celebrated the festive season at CUB BrewHouse which included a tour of the brewery. Thank you to Delta Rent for once again supporting our event.

MEMBERSHIP

Our membership remained steady, pleasingly we have a number of new young members.

VIC SUB BRANCH/VICTORIAN YOUNG MEMBERS NETWORK

Our appreciation is extended to Adrian Bull (Chairman) and Craig Staggard (Secretary/Treasurer) for their hard work in ensuring successful running of the Victorian Sub Branch and to Dru Oxley for running the VYMN.

19

Western Australia Branch

With the need to keep business profitable in what has been a fairly torrid year, the Committee once again had to work hard at getting members along to various functions throughout the past financial year. We have had record attendances at our functions this year and I would like to thank them all for the efforts they have made.

MEMBERSHIP:

At the end of the 2014/2015 financial year, WA membership was 175, which is identical to last year despite losing a few members who have moved interstate or left the industry. We continue to get keen new members joining which shows the

reputation of the IQA and our branch is still as strong as ever.

TECHNICAL, EDUCATIONAL AND SOCIAL FUNCTIONS:

Annual General Meeting 19th August 2014 – 109 members and guests attended the AGM at Lapa Brazilian Restaurant. The evening was a great opportunity for networking as well as providing mountains of meat to feed the hungry followed by an energetic salsa dancing display. This was proudly sponsored by Rocla and WA Limestone.

PDP August 2014 – The Mine Planning for Operators of Extractive Sites was held on 28th August. 9 people attended this course.

PDP – October 2014 – The Electrical Awareness for Quarry Managers and Supervisors was held on 28th October. 15 people attended this course.

Gateway Site Visit 22nd October 2014 – 43 members and guests attended a presentation by Tim Orpen from the Gateway WA Alliance, followed by an interesting tour of the project works. This was kindly sponsored by WesTrac.

IQA National Conference 3-6th October 2014 – A small contingent of members from the Western Australian Branch attended the IQA conference in Brisbane. Matt Hardy from Boral was presented with the Southern Cross Engineering – Rocktec Innovation Award which recognises an individual’s contribution to excellence and innovation in the quarry industry.

Annual Golf Day November 2014 - 216 Players took to the field in high spirits and as per usual it was not all about the standard of play (for most) but about how much fun you have. This highlight of our IQA WA calendar once again hit the mark. Following on from last year, Craig

Pedley at Striker Australia generously donated a $10,000 all expenses paid, luxury trip to Malaysia as a hole in one prize. Unfortunately for the golfers, nobody achieved this goal. This is one event we never seem to have a problem filling and it was a very successful day, generating a profit in excess of $20k, thanks to the numerous sponsors we have each year.

The “Bowling Stone” Lawn Bowls Challenge & Sundowner 27th March 2015– The Inaugural “Bowling Stone” Challenge was held on 27th March at South Perth Bowls Club. As this was the first event on our 2015 calendar, the members were obviously keen to attend an event to catch up with their colleagues and friends in the industry and try their hand at a bit of lawn bowls. 77 people registered for the bowls and a few others decided that the Sundowner/networking component of the evening was more their style. The winners on the day were The Komatsu ‘Bedrock Bowlers’ who were presented with a handcrafted trophy donated by Italia Stone Group. This event was kindly sponsored by OzTrac.

CLOSING COMMENTS

The IQA Western Australian Branch has again enjoyed a successful year with a wide variety of events that were well supported by the members and increasingly non-members. A successful branch cannot exist without a strong branch committee and supporting sub-committees and secretarial support. Accordingly I would like to thank the branch committee and our branch secretary Celia Pavri for their commitment and support throughout the year.

Finally, I’d like to thank all of our sponsors, who are always willing to do their bit for the industry through the Institute of Quarrying. Without their support we would struggle to offer regular, relevant and successful functions for our members.

AUGUST 2014 – AGM & GENERAL MEETING

The 2014 Annual General Meeting and General meeting was this year held in Deloraine preceded by a tour of Tony and Cheryl Creswell’s Deloraine based operations. The site tour included an inspection of the fertilizer mixing and distribution operations on site and also the workshops and a viewing of their latest build, a fully mobile crushing and screening plant for use in various areas around the state. Specifically for crushing Limestone to Ag grades. Members were very impressed with the high build quality of this new machine which was equal to anything available currently on the market and had been designed and built entirely in-house to fill a specific need.

Following this tour the AGM was held at the Mountain View Hotel where members gathered to listen to the report on the previous year’s branch activities and financial result. As no nominations were received from the floor or prior to the meeting all committee positions remain for another year. A short general meeting was held at the conclusion of the AGM with several ideas from the floor on possible site visits and meeting venues for the coming year.

OCTOBER 2014 – SAFETY DAY SEMINAR

Once again this year the branch’s safety day seminar was held in conjunction with the CCAA with a ‘Mock Court’ held in the Magistrates court in Hobart. This year the theme was based around our obligations to maintain safe systems of work not only for our own staff but also the contractors who attend our sites to undertake work on our behalf. The take away from this safety seminar was that whatever we are currently doing in relation to safety on our sites, it can be improved and just because we may have had no incidents up until now this may not always be the case. The attendees were taken through a very realistic scenario and it hi-lighted the need to have practical and simple health and safety procedures and to be pro-active around hazard identification and corrective actions. This year’s Safety Day is planned for the 28th October and will be based around the delivery of construction materials.

NOVEMBER 2014 – TECHNICAL & SOCIAL WEEKEND

This year the Technical and Social weekend was held at the White Sands Resort at Iron House Point on the east coast. The weekend was very well supported with several “mainlanders” also making the trip across to attend. This resulted in a very successful weekend and managed to break the record for our largest attendance ever. Members were once again treated to an informative and interesting “Rocks are Us” tour led by Ron Bugg with a tour of some old mining sites and points of interest in the surrounding area. Those who attended reported that it was an excellent weekend and no doubt next years event will fill up fast so a reminder to everyone to get their registrations in early.

MAY 2015 – GENERAL MEETING

The May meeting was preceded by a tour of Boral’s Bridgewater quarry. The quarry has a basalt resource and is a large plant for the island state with a capacity for up to 400tph. Members were shown around the site and were able to look over the crushing plant and were also given an overview of the electrical and automation upgrade currently underway. The meeting was held at the local Brighton hotel where the upcoming branch events were discussed along with promoting the IQA Awards currently open for nominations, the annual conference to be held in Adelaide in October, and the upcoming local IQA/CCAA Golf day.

JULY 2015 – INFORMATION NIGHT

This year the idea of an information night was taken up with the first of these held at William Adams in Hobart. Members were treated to an enjoyable night hosted by the William Adams crew and led by the branch manager, Paul Hart. Paul gave a very interesting insight into the importance of contamination control when undertaking repairs or servicing on any hydraulic parts and systems on today’s machines. An inspection of the workshop and stores area was undertaken showing how contamination control is put into practice on their site. A very informative and interesting discussion and slide show was also given on the equipment that Cat supply to the various Antarctic bases and how these machines have evolved over time. Members attending were also able to view a tractor fitted with rubber tracks that was currently on site awaiting delivery.

Once again I am pleased to report that our membership numbers have remained stable over the year and we are poised to exceed our target of more than 50 members in the Tasmanian branch.

I would also like to encourage everyone to continue to provide support to the branch by attending meetings whenever they are able, and also to invite prospective members to join us whenever possible.

21

GENERAL

The Young Members Network had another successful year of participation. Most states made good use of the last year of seed funding, with many events being held across the national network, consisting of site visits, PDP learning, presentations, an overseas study tour and more.

The state coordinators have once again done an awesome job of getting the young members involved and developing stronger industry knowledge and relationships through learning and networking. There is already a number of exciting events in the pipeline for the year

ahead.

Current Young Member Membership sits at around 262 young people and growing, an increase of approx 17% from last year. Young members make up approximately 20% of the IQA membership.

YMN ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL STUDY TOUR – APRIL 2015

This years YMN International Study Tour was kindly hosted by the South African Institute of Quarrying. Two young members, Blake Ardrey and Craig Potts from Boral, accepted the challenge of this amazing once in a life time opportunity. The tour was split into two locations with the first leg being held in South Africa’s largest city Johannesburg, and the final leg in the picturesque Cape Town.

Both young members benefited, coming home with some great experience and ideas that they’ve taken back to their own operations.

Keep your eye out for the October issue of Quarry magazine for a full article on the trip.

VICTORIA YMN

The YMN in Victoria continues to go well. The highlight for 2014/2015 was the ‘Pit to Road’ event held in November. Eight young members attended Fulton Hogan operations for the day, touring a hard rock quarry, and asphalt plant and a road surfacing job watching a paver operate. This event was written up in Quarry Magazine. Young Members are also encouraged to attend functions early with the express purpose of catching up with one another before the event proper.

Historically VYMN events have been very low cost, thus it is not anticipated that the loss of a guaranteed National budget will adversely affect activities.

The only key item to flag is that Dru Oxley turns 35 in mid-2016 and thus the search will be on for a new Victorian YMN Coordinator. The YMN National Chair and General Manager will be involved with that hand-over process when the time comes.

22

SOUTH AUSTRALIA YMN

The SA YMN has had another great year, with Ben Davis as the state coordinator, taking over from James Rowe.

SA YMN has continued the emphasis in training and professional development of its member group. The group attended a ‘Fit for Duty’ Professional Development Seminar provided by the IQA.

In November YMN personnel attended a Site Tour of Boral Construction Materials - Para Hills, including visits to the Concrete Plant to focus on recycled water use, Logistics Site Visit to focus on logistics efficiencies and a Quarry Site Visit to focus on progressive rehab projects. The group also visited Bridgestone Earthmoving Tyres at Edinburgh to focus on SME tyre handling & Bridgestone’s Business model.

QUEENSLAND YMN

QLD YMN has welcomed on board Luke Payne as the Northern QLD YMN coordinator. Luke is working hard to develop a local network and start to hold events to benefit the young members of NQ.

Two events were held in the 14-15 financial year for the Brisbane Young Members Network.

On 25th September 2014 a group of 17 attendees visited Boral Ormeau Quarry and Fulton Hogan Blue Rock Quarry. The tour highlighted best practice management of new extraction areas as well as stormwater management using high efficiency sediment basins.

On 2nd June 2015 a group of 12 attendees travelled to Toowoomba

to visit the Wagners Brisbane West (Wellcamp) Airport and the adjacent Boral Wellcamp Quarry. The tour highlighted how various construction materials are utilised in building major infrastructure as well as good community consultation and environmental performance. The Brisbane YMN has a strong following with good attendance at events and hopes to provide similar opportunities for professional development and networking in the 15 - 16 financial year

NSW YMN

The NSW YMN had yet another strong year, with the coordinators doing a great job.

On Friday the 17th of April 2015, eight people from the NSW IQA Young Members Network had a terrific day of education, networking and fun. With a visit to the Singleton Coal Centre, where they received a 45-minute briefing on the coal mining activities of the Hunter Valley by an expert guide, prior to our coal mine tour. Following on they visited Rix’s Creek mine and were met by one of the mine’s engineers, who enlightened them for about an hour on the open cut coal mine’s daily and strategic functions and challenges!

Another event in Newcastle on Friday November 14. Nineteen people from a whole host of suppliers and operations attended the three tours and lunch. For the first tour, they visited Daracon Buttai Quarry, featuring conglomerate and sandstone, gaining a general overview of the quarry, its operations, and its challenges and how they are addressing them. From Buttai, they went to the Port Waratah Coal Services’ Kooragang Island facility. This is an enormous bulk handling operation, shifting in excess of 200 million tonnes per year of coal. The host and guide, Ron Dove, volunteered his time and was enthusiastic and knowledgeable, and was excited to see so many hi-vis outfits in one tour, to the extent that we ran almost an hour overtime before needing to cut the tour short! The up-close tour of the site’s operations, including the enormous stackers and reclaimers, was a tour highlight. After a lunch break, we headed off to our final tour for the day at the Woodburys Haulage and Earthmoving quarry at Black Hill. Greg Thompson of VGT generously donated his time to provide us with geological insights into the quarry. This rounded out our day of operational focuses with interesting technical.
