INTRODUCTION

Vision and goals

In October 18th 2012, the IPN SPIE Student Chapter was established, after two years the name was

changed to IPN – Azcapotzalco SPIE Student Chapter in order to allow other IPN branches to form

their own chapters.

Most of our members are PhD and Master Students from the Centro de Investigación e Innovación

Tecnológica (CIITEC – Azcapotzalco) in Mexico City. The other members are postgraduates and

undergraduates from Escuela Superior de Ingeniería Mécanica y Eléctrica (ESIME – Azcapotzalco

and ESIME - Zacatenco), and Universidad Autónoma del Carmen (UNACAR).

Our objective is to keep together the student community from IPN – Azcapotzalco who are

interested in image processing, optics and photonics research fields. Our activities are categorised

into two groups:

Social and networking activities.

Educational activities.

Twice a month (2014): Tea Time.

Tea time is a social event organized by the student chapter where chapter members and students

from other fields are invited to enjoy some snacks and beverages. This is a great opportunity to

interact with other departments in order to create future collaborations, and it is also a great

opportunity to invite those students to join our chapter.

Figure 6. Advisor and student members in the Tea Time.

November 2014: Mexico City and Teotihuacan day trip.

This is the first time that members of our chapter take the visiting researcher to meet some places

from Mexico City. The places visited by the members were: Iglesia de San Hipólito, Alameda

Central, Palacio de Bellas Artes, Sanborns de los Azulejos, Calle Madero, Catedral Metropolitana,

Palacio de Nacional, Zócalo Capitalino, and Museo del Templo Mayor. Also, the members brought

the visiting researcher to eat Mexican food such as Pozole, Chicharrón, Sopes, and flavoured

water.

After show some sights from Mexico City, our guest wanted to know the Teotihuacan pyramids, so

the next day we take the visiting researcher to meet and climb the Temple of the Feathered

Serpent, and the pyramids of The Sun and The Moon. This experience provides a great opportunity

as chapter members to interact in a relaxing atmosphere with one of the best researchers on

Optical Fibre Tapers, practicing the English Language when we tried to explain the astronomical

phenomena of equinox, and a valuable networking opportunity at the Optoelectronic Research

Centre from the University of Southampton, United Kingdom.

This was the first international event to Ernesto González-Ocaña, who presented his research work

titled “Analysis of samples of crude and refined oil by fluorescence and micro optical fibres”. On

the other hand, he also attended the social and cultural events involving in the congress. This

experience was fantastic for him because he knew a lot of students and also had the opportunity

to listen some well-known researcher from Latin America.

February 2014: Short talks with Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional (SEDENA)

The aim of this talk was to create a link between SEDENA and CIITEC, through the explanation of

our research work and the chapter activities.

Figure 24. SEDENA in the laboratory of photonics.

March 2014: Short talks with MSc Lizbeth Martinez Ramirez at CIITEC

The aim of this talk was to learn something about money administration. This was the first time

our student chapter include this kind of talks. During the exposition, Lizbeth provide us useful

information and gave us some tips to develop a good financial report.

October 2014: Short talks with institutions from Mexico and El Salvador.

Our student chapter has a special meeting with the Mexican Scientific Police. The Scientific Police is a committee conformed by some Mexican and foreign institutions, such as Centro de Investigación en Cómputo (CIC – IPN), División Científica and University of El Salvador. The best part of the meeting was when all the members of the chapter explained their master or doctoral projects which were interesting for the committee of Mexican Scientific Police. At the end, we were together to have a dinner and we received a feedback from our projects.

Southampton.

Professor Gilberto Brambilla was invited by the OSA to give a talk in the Latin America Optics &

Photonics Conference in Cancun, Mexico. For that reason, IPN – Azcapotzalco Student Chapter

decide to invite him to give a scientific talk. Professor Brambilla talked about the goals of the

company in which he is the director, as well as his research working in Optical Fibre Tapers (OFT),

devices and sensors based on OFT, and the possibility to create an agreement between the ORC

and the Mexican Universities.
