2014 - 20152016 - 2017

Dear Students, Parents and Carers,

Making choices to support future educational and career pathways is an important stage of school life. The Government has made it clear that the majority of students should follow what they consider to be an ‘academic’ route whenever possible. At Harrop Fold, we are excited about the new Progress 8 measure and will do everything we can to help students achieve the best possible outcomes for them.

Progress 8 will measure students’ progress across 8 subjects. 5 out of the 8 subjects must be part of the EBacc (English Baccalaureate) qualification which includes: English, Mathematics, Science, Geography, History and Languages. The other 3 subjects can be made up of GCSEs and other approved academic, arts or vocational qualifications as permitted by the Government.

There are certain examination subjects which all students will continue to study. These are English, Mathematics and Science. Students will also continue with PSHE/Citizenship during form time and core PE. All students must then choose one subject from either French, Geography or History and three further subjects from the remaining options. If students wish to follow the EBacc pathway, they must study both a foreign language and either Geography or History.

It is essential that students and parents are aware of which qualifications are on offer and the amount of work required for each course. This Pathways Booklet is designed to give guidance at this important time.

We would also like to invite you to our Year 9 Progress and Pathways evening on Thursday 3rd March 2016 4.00–6.30pm during which there will be an opportunity to discuss students' progress and potential. There will also be a presentation at 5.30pm to explain the Pathways process in greater detail. At this presentation students will be issued with a Pathways Choices form for them to complete and return to school.

Please use this evening to ask questions and feel free to contact Mr Ince or Mrs Benigno at school if you wish to discuss anything further.

Yours sincerely,

! Mrs J Benigno Mr Drew Povey Director of Progress Headteacher

Pathways Guidance Team Harrop's Top Tips for Pathways Success:

1. Your main consideration should be yourself and what is best for you

2. Choose subjects you are interested in and that you enjoy

3. Be REALISTIC about which courses you are likely to succeed in

4. Choose subjects you feel you are good at and check with teachers concerned

5. Choose subjects you feel will help you in your possible future career

6. Talk to people who can help and advise you

How NOT to choose!

Don't choose a subject just because you like the teacher. You cannot be sure of having the same teacher for the next 2 years.

Don't choose a subject because your friend chooses it. It may be right for him/her but not for you!

Don't choose a subject because it looks easy - all subjects involve two years of continuous hard work and commitment.

REMEMBER

• No system of Options can please everybody • Pay careful attention to your reserve choices, these might end up being the subjects you study so think carefully and make an informed choice
