the transformationTHE GREAT COMMISSION IS CENTRAL TO THE MISSION OF

THE CHURCH AND A CHRISTIAN LIBERAL ARTS EDUCATION.

WHEN JESUS WAS PREPARING TO ASCEND INTO HEAVEN,

HIS DISCIPLES WERE CONCERNED ABOUT UNDERSTANDING

THE “TIMES AND SEASONS” IN WHICH THEY WERE

LIVING. JESUS DECLARED THAT THESE KIND OF MATTERS

BELONG TO GOD THE FATHER. WHAT IS MOST URGENT IS

FOR CHRIST FOLLOWERS TO YIELD THEMSELVES TO THE

DYNAMIC OF THE HOLY SPIRIT AND SERVE AS WITNESSES

WHO DISCIPLE PEOPLE THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. THE

PRIME THEME OF JESUS’ REITERATION OF THE GREAT

COMMISSION IN ACTS 1:8 IS AS FOLLOWS: BEGIN WHERE

YOU ARE IN JERUSALEM, MOVE OUTWARD TO JUDEA AND

SAMARIA, AND DO NOT STOP UNTIL THE ENTIRE WORLD

HAS RECEIVED THE GOSPEL.

A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

“BUT YOU WILL RECEIVE POWER WHEN THE HOLY SPIRIT COMES ON YOU; AND YOU WILL BE MY WITNESSES IN JERUSALEM, AND IN ALL JUDEA AND SAMARIA, AND TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH.”

Grace and Peace,

Ray G. Barber, D.Min. ’85, ‘88President

In fulfillment of this directive, Oakland City

University provides educational opportunities

for multiple needs and challenges. Our

first commitment is to serve in our local

community. From our Jerusalem we seek

to move outward with educational services

to the local region, state, nation, and the

world at large. The Oakland City University

family often defines this commitment as

transforming the heartland, the nation,

and the world.

Space prohibits a comprehensive review of

all the activities and services Oakland City

University provides regionally, nationally, and

globally. It is our privilege to share a few of

these stories with you. Without friends like

you who understand the dynamic power of

God and the transforming influence of an

OCU education, these stories would never

come to fruition. Your faithful contributions

allows Oakland City University to exist as an

Acts 1:8 community.

THE PRESIDENT’S MEDALLION SIGNIFIES DR. RAY G. BARBER’S ONGOING COMMITMENT TO THE DEVELOPMENT

OF: THE HEAD, HEART, AND HANDS OF OCU STUDENTS.

Page 4: 2014 Annual Report

HEARTLANDSince 1994, Oakland City University has collaborated with

the Indiana Department of Corrections (IDOC) providing

education programs to incarcerated individuals. Through this

collaborative effort numerous students have found renewed

hope, purpose, and meaning for life. Meet August Calderon…

one shining example of a life transformed through OCU’s Prison

Education programs.

August Calderon has a natural gift for culinary arts. After being

incarcerated at the Indianapolis Re-Entry Educational Facility,

he thought that gift would never be used again. But Mr.

Dennis Brady, OCU Culinary Arts Instructor, mentored August

to rediscover his love for cooking. August advanced through

rigorous academic and professional expectations completing

the three-month Culinary Arts Certificate Program.

In 2012, August Calderon was sent to a Work Release facility.

August was hired by locally owned restaurant, Iozzo’s Garden

of Italy, in downtown Indianapolis. Restaurant management

was pleased with his job performance and considered him for

future promotions.

August furthered his education by attending the Chef’s

Academy in Indianapolis. Because of his willingness to learn

and strong work-ethic he was promoted to Sous Chef. As a

result of his culinary talents, August was promoted to Executive

Chef and charged with the responsibilities of leading the entire

kitchen staff.

August Calderon contributes much of his success to Oakland

City University. He commented: “My passion for cooking was

reinvigorated because of OCU’s Culinary Arts program. I am

also grateful to Mr. Dennis Brady who gave me specialized

education and training in this career field. I have a second

chance at life because of OCU.”

TERRY JOHNSON

Oakland City University Online extends the tradition of academic

excellence at OCU. Online programs provide busy adults with

an alternative learning solution to the traditional classroom by

taking advantage of tools and resources on the World Wide Web.

The Online Criminal Justice Program is one example of OCU’s

success in this type of educational environment.

OCU proudly conferred Officer Terry Johnson with its first Online

Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Degree in 2014. Terry

began his law enforcement career in 1994 with the Vincennes

Police Department; holding various positions within the police

department including detective and emergency vehicle operations

(EVO) instructor. He achieved the merit rank of Lieutenant and

was appointed as Assistant Chief of Police in 2012.

Recently, Terry tested for the merit position of Captain with

the police department. He placed first on the eligibility list and

attributes these successes to his academic experiences. Terry

states: “The educational venture with Oakland City University has

not only refreshed criminal justice topics that I encounter routinely,

but it has made me a better administrator with classes focusing

on issues specific to police supervisors.”

Terry is married to Autumn Johnson and they have three very

energetic children. Terry describes the balance between family,

work, and education as: “Autumn has been very supportive with

my law enforcement career and with my decision to continue

educational endeavors with Oakland City University, it was as

important to my family as it was to me to complete my degree.

The fact that the Criminal Justice degree was completely online

left valuable time for me to spend with my family.”

“BE MY WITNESS IN ALL JUDEA AND SAMARIA”

Terry Johnson ‘14 says the faculty and staff made his

educational experience as uncomplicated as possible.

“They were absolutely fantastic and if I had to do it all again

I would not change a thing! My personal experience has

prompted me to inquire about a Master’s degree program

with OCU.”

The Online Criminal Justice Program has experienced

fast-paced growth in enrollment, academic development,

and national exposure. In this specific program, courses

are taught by subject matter experts and eTextbooks are

provided with an iPad mini. Oakland City University has

been listed as one of the most Affordable Online Colleges in

Indiana for 2014. Furthermore, OCU has been recognized

by BestColleges.com as the fourth Best Online Criminal

Justice Program of 2014.

Oakland City University offers fully online degrees in:

Religious Studies, Business, and Criminal Justice.

6 MAKING A DIFFERENCE 2013 ANNUAL REPORT

My trip to Jamaica was short in time,

but never ending in memories. I was

blessed to spend a week working

with a local church putting on a

Vacation Bible School for the area

children. Working hard alongside

fellow classmates, the week was

filled with joy, laughter, growth, and

God. I was in charge of running

the arts and crafts section with

a good friend and fellow OCU

classmate of mine, Emily Engle.

Jamaica opened my eyes to the

work God was already doing

within the island and the work He was doing

inside my heart.

JAMAICAI departed on my second trip to

Faith Home Honduras in May. I was

immediately blessed by seeing the

smiling faces of the children who I

met the year prior and overjoyed to

meet the new kids! My primary job

was working in the kitchen to prepare

meals for the team. God used this

responsibility to help me realize

the mission field is everywhere. As

believers, we are to serve the Lord no

matter what the task He has called us

to do! Through this outreach, we were

able to share the Gospel to the village

people and show them God’s love.

Hong Kong: This summer I spent four amazing weeks teaching

the English language in Hong Kong. It was the most amazing and

challenging month of my life. In Hong Kong, God revealed Himself

to me in so many different ways. I wish I could say every day

of my summer was exciting, fun and overwhelmingly awesome,

but I cannot. There were very trying and hard days during

these experiences in Asia. But God has never called us to be

comfortable. As the Apostle Paul writes in Galatians, when

we step out of our comfort zone and “die to self”, Christ lives in

and through us!

Cambodia:

From Hong

Kong I traveled

to Cambodia.

Cambodia stole my

heart! The people

there are so strong

and happy. The

country as a whole

is still recovering

from a haunting past

filled with pain. While

in Cambodia, I visited the Killing fields from the Genocide in the

1970s. It truly opened my eyes to all the things that countries go

through every day without the majority of the world even noticing. It

is time we open our eyes and our hearts to the other nations...they

are God’s children too.

Oakland City University was honored to have Dr. John Ed Mathison, noted author and pastor serve as our 119th Commencement speaker. In his remarks, Dr. Mathison coined the phrase…“Selective Deafness.” He commented: “You must have Selective Deafness when others tell you that the task at hand cannot be accomplished. Because we serve the Almighty God who helps us overcome giants. For our God is so big…so strong and so mighty…there is nothing our God cannot do.” He went on to elaborate the story of King David and how God used the most unexpected person to defeat the giant, Goliath, and lead the children of Israel.

Oakland City University, much like King David, has overcome challenges or “giants” yet remained focused on our mission to be an Acts 1:8 community. Through God’s great hand of providence, the University has pushed forward becoming a relevant leader in Christian higher education.

In this annual report, you have read how Oakland City University is transforming the nation, the heartland, and the world. In each of these pillars, we believe our institution is doing vital work for God’s Kingdom because of generous friends like you.

As you plan your year-end financial giving, we want you to know how grateful we are for your philanthropy. We believe our greatest duty as a Christ-centered community is to live out the Great Commission. As we join together to advance our mission, I pray that God gives you “Selective Deafness” when confronting the challenges before you. Thank you for your generous financial and prayer support.
