To put this in perspective: the rate is 5 picometres per second - the calculated diameter of a helium atom is 31 picometres. At this rate, it takes about 1000 seconds to apply 1 molecular layer. We further calculate that we are, in a controlled fashion, depositing 510 NPB molecules per square micron per second.

The material is NPB and the deposition rate is .005 angstroms/sec. You can see the ramp soak profile of the power and a smooth rise to the target rate (with no overshoot or ring), then a smooth power/rate ramp at the end. The duration of the experiment was about 5 hours.

SUMMARY Six years ago, OLED lighting was first being proposed as a serious commercial product. Back then, 2014 was projected as the year when OLED lighting would first make its impact

felt on general illumination. It didn’t happen. OLED lighting has been available for four years now, but with few signs of its moving beyond the luxury and specialist lighting sector. Also, the disappearance of GE from this space is another reason to treat OLED lighting with a little less respect than it once had. So is it time to wave goodbye to OLED lighting as a large-scale business opportunity and label it “niche only?” The case can be made. But then again some large lighting suppliers remain bullish on this technology and appear to mean what they say. Also, the fate of OLED lighting remains of importance well beyond the lighting sector. Because OLED consist of large panels, their success or failure has major implications for both the OLED materials sector and the OLED market itself. Even a modest success for OLED lighting could quickly make it the largest segment of the OLED business; which would completely change the market orientation of the OLED market from one that is currently oriented towards small mobile displays. In this complex market environment, NanoMarkets believes that it is time for a detailed and honest assessment of both the current value proposition and future revenue timeframes for OLED lighting. 2.1 Global Lighting Market According to the United Nations Environment Programme, lighting accounted for 15 percent of the total global electricity demand in 2010 [15]. IHS estimates that the global lighting market generates total annual revenue of nearly $100 billion [16]. Rising electricity prices, mounting concerns about climate change, and desire for energy independence are causing the global lighting market to shift toward energy-efficient light sources, including SSL.

At this time, the global market for SSL is dominated by LED-based lighting products, while OLED lighting is currently confined to decorative luminaires and custom-built fittings, designed more to enhance the ambiance than to produce light. For this reason, the remainder of this section focuses on LED-based lighting. Globally, IHS estimates that LED products accounted for 18 percent of lighting revenues in 2013, which corresponds to revenues of $16 billion [17]. When expressed in terms of unit sales, the greatest contribution has come from replacement lamps. Strategies Unlimited estimates that 400 million LED lamps were sold globally in 2013, suggesting that market penetration is about three percent [18]. However, estimates of global sales vary significantly, with some analyses suggesting less, while others suggest the global sale of LED lamps has reached over 800 million units…

LED Tubes Will Make Fluorescents Seem Old-Fashioned

Cree, front-runners in the scramble to replace traditional forms of illumination with greener LED sources, has just announced the release of a new type of tube light designed to tackle one of the biggest energy hogs in Corporate America: fluorescent overhead lights…. The new Cree T8 bulb looks very much like the traditional T-8 fluorescent tube we've been using since the 1970s.

Samsung hits the pause button on OLED TVs

SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics has abandoned plans for a new facility to manufacture next-generation display panels for televisions, deterred by the inefficiency of production amid intense price competition in the TV market…. Samsung will focus on high-quality LCD TVs for the time being. It will continue research on OLED technologies but will likely not release any new OLED sets for a while. Instead, the company is thinking about setting up a new facility to make small and midsize OLED panels for such devices as smartphones. The development will likely slow the popularization of OLEDs as a TV technology. The OLED TV market amounted to just 4,400 units in 2013, according to U.S. research company DisplaySearch….

So, The OLED SSL industry needs to find its market segment for general illumination ASAP. Before we are totally usurped by more mature technologies.
