Begin your journey in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi— a city filled with contrasts. Spend your nights at Hemingways Nairobi, a new boutique hotel

overlooking the Karen Country Club. And enjoy a full day off exploring a giraffe sanctuary, an elephant orphanage and more.

A morning spent overcoming your jet lag at the hotel’s rejuvenating spa (fees will apply) or simply relaxing and enjoying the beautiful grounds will leave you ready to begin your Kenyan adventure. Browse the exhibits at the Karen Blixen Museum, a gallery dedicated to life in Kenya at the turn of the 20th century as well as the influences of Ms. Blixen’s famed book out of africa. Enjoy private access to the Daphne Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, a working elephant orphanage featured in the 2011 IMAX movie Born To Be Wild. Learn how the Giraffe Center is helping the Rothschild giraffe—one of the most endangered giraffe subspecies in the world—make a comeback, and get hands-on with a chance to feed the large but gentle animals.

T ravel via chartered flight to the next stop on your journey, Lewa Safari Camp. Settle into your authentic

thatched tent before heading out on your first game drive in search of wildlife including black rhinos (approximately 10% of Kenya’s black rhino population calls Lewa home), zebra and more. While at Lewa, guides will escort you on daily game drives and even the occasional night game drive.

Enjoy a day spent with the Maasai people of the Il Ngwesi village, learning their traditional songs and dances, their incredibly specialized hunting techniques and the community’s unique cultural history. Play a game with the children. Master the trick of herding their cattle before helping feed their livestock. And discover a cultural richness to Kenya that few visitors get to experience firsthand.

The theme of preservation of culture and wildlife will continue during a visit to an Anti-Poaching Center near Lewa, where you’ll meet the rangers who fight to end the merciless poaching that continues to target endangered species throughout Africa. And back at Lewa, enjoy many more opportunities to search for more wildlife, heading out into the bush on foot, on horseback and even by camel with your guide whenever you’re not out on a game drive.

The maasaiThe Maasai people, well-known for their bright clothing, oversized necklaces and

intricate head pieces, are a semi-nomadic East African tribe found throughout Kenya and Tanzania. In their strongly patriarchal

society, male elders lead each Maasai group, directing the tribe’s future and enforcing

the community’s oral law traditions, many of which date back centuries. And while they have been able to flourish, even growing in number by an estimated 100%+ over

the past 20 years, the Maasai have begun slowly adopting some new, modern beliefs and agricultural techniques that will likely

change some aspects of their lifestyle. But they remain warmly welcoming toward any visitors who wish to learn more about their

culture, traditions and daily lives.

u pon your return to Nairobi, you’ll check in once again at Hemingways Nairobi, where a room has been reserved for your use as you await your

departure. Most flights back to Europe and the United States depart in the late evening, but if you prefer to depart the following day, the room will remain available for your use overnight at no additional charge.

F rom Lewa, you will travel again by chartered flight to the world-renowned Maasai Mara National Reserve, where your guide will greet you and escort you to

your safari tent at Abercrombie & Kent’s Sanctuary Olonana.

Of course, you’ll enjoy daily game drives here as well, tracking and likely spotting at least some of the “Big Five”—lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino—(and wildebeest as well) with the help of your guide. But your time in Maasai Mara will also include everything from a visit to a nearby school to “sundowners” (cocktails served at sunset, affording you stunning views of the Mara plains as the sun sinks below the horizon) and an optional hot air balloon ride (additional cost will apply). You can even join an expert naturalist on a walk through the bush, learning about the native trees, plants and insects and the roles they play in the daily lives of the Maasai tribe along the way.

While the leopard population at Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is small, there are a few—these expert predators are known for their elusiveness, stealth and compact strength. And for hiding out in tree branches high above the ground.

Kenya’s Maasai depend on their livestock, primarily cattle, for their prosperity. Traditional Maasai warriors—identified by their bright red garments—dedicate their lives to protecting their livestock and grazing lands as well as their tribe.
