Correcting Run-on Sentences

There are 3 ways to correct a run-on sentence:

1. Use an end mark to separate a run-on sentence into two sentences.

• I went shopping on Black Friday. I forgot my list of gifts I wanted to buy.

2. Use a comma and a coordinating conjunction to combine two independent clauses.

• I went shopping on Black Friday, but I forgot my list of gifts I wanted to buy.3. Use a semicolon to connect two closely related ideas into one sentence.

• I went shopping on Black Friday; I forgot my list of gifts I wanted to buy.

Ste_ÿ_l -- When you find a comma {,) or FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so), circle it.

- Check to see if there is a complete sentence on either side of the comma or FANBOYS.

Step. 3- If so, it is a run-on sentence, and you need to fix it in one of the three ways listed above.

Your turn! Underneath each run-on sentence, write the sentence correctly three different ways.

1. Today is December 1, we are back at school.

Today is December first. We are back at school

Today is December first, and we are back at school.

Today is December first; we are back at school.

2. There are only three weeks of school left and I can't wait until we are off again!

Complex Sentences

A complex sentence consists of one main or independent clause (parent clause) and one or more

subordinate clauses (kid clause).

The indeÿ,,,'erÿdent cÿsuse can stand alone as a complete sentence.

(just like parents are independent - they pay their own bills, vote, take care of the kids)

The dependent clause cannot stand alone because it is not a complete sentence.

(just like kids are dependents - they depend on their parents to buy groceries and

clothes and take them places)

Two Rules to Remember:

1. When a complex sentence begins with a dependent clause and ends with an independent

clause, you place a comma after the dependent clause (just a comma...no FANBOYS allowed!)

Example: When you use your strategies, you have a better chance of #etting the ar',,,swer right.

(dependent clause) (independent clause)

Example: If you like zombies, lknow a r;reat book you should read!(dependent douse) (independent clause)

2. When a complex sentences begins with an independent clause and ends with a dependent

clause, you do not use a comma.

Example: You have a better chance of £;ett}ng the answer ri£ht when you use your strategies.(independent clause) (dependent clause)

Example: ! know a great book you should read if you like zombies!(independent clause) (dependent clause)

£ - When you find a comma (,), circle ito- Check the phrases on e}ther side to see if they could be complete sentences or not and label

them IC (}ndependent clause) or DC (dependent clause)° Based on the rules above, VOU will know if }t is scomplex sentence and whether or p,,,ot it needs a comma,

,.,'3 - If ÿhey are both compRte sentences (independent clauses), use the steps for Combining

Sentences.

confidence, and the test was three hours away.

(13) Finally, with my heart racing, I spun my pencil anxiously as Mr. Simms distributed the tests. (14) I thought I took

my time. (15) I thought I did well. (16) But that afternoon I saw my score: 78. (17) Allison got a !00. (18) I waited until I

got home to cry. (19) If I knew that material, why couldn't I get a 100?

(20) My counselor, she suggested after a chat that we try a schedule change so I'd have science first period so I

wouldn't have to be apprehensive all day about those troublesome tests. (21) We tried it out, and I got an A on the very
