Head Coach Paul Hamilton enters his 31st year coaching collegiate football at both the Division I and Division II levels, with 16 years of experience as a head coach. Hamilton is in his eighth year at the helm of the Tornados.

In 2013, Hamilton guided the Tornados to a three-win campaign that saw a number of statistical highlights. His quarterbacks led the conference in passing efficiency and ranked third nationally in yards per completed pass. In addition to being disciplined, committing just 12 turnovers on the season for the fifth-best total in Division II and ranking third nationally in penalties, Hamilton coached a trio of All-Region performers and an Honorable Mention All-American linebacker in Michael Gruber.

In 2012, Brevard was the least-penalized team in Division II football as Hamilton led Jordan Ollis (FB) and Eric Watts (P) to Don Hansen’s Division II All-America Team. BC also toppled formerly nationally-

ranked Newberry 27-13 in its season finale on November 10th.

The 2011 season saw Brevard again in the top 10 in the NCAA DII in rushing as the Tornados finished eighth in the nation. The Tornados also had a school record seven players named to the postseason All-SAC team and their first two All-Americans in program history in Caleb Campbell (OL) and Jack Woerner (FB).

In the 2010 season, the Tornados finished with the NCAA DII’s third ranked rushing attack and saw five players named to the All-SAC postseason team, including the SAC Offensive Freshman of the year, Kelvin Jeter.

The Tornados finished 7-4 in 2009 with wins against SAC opponents Lenoir-Rhyne, Tusculum and Catawba. The turnaround from the 2008 season, when they finished 1-9 in their first year in the SAC, was recognized as the 11th best in Division II that year by Somis Sports. Coach Hamilton’s squad, which only had a month of preparation under the head coach prior to the start of the 2007 season, recorded home wins over both Chowan University and LaGrange College. In 2007, the Tornados improved in every statistical category as they competed as provisional members of both the NCAA Division II level and of the South Atlantic Conference, which had four different teams ranked throughout the season.

Hamilton began his collegiate football coaching career at the Citadel in 1981 where he coached the receivers. He then moved on to East Tennessee State University where he coached the receivers in 1983 before coaching the quarterbacks in 1984-1985 and 1986-1987. Hamilton coached the quarterbacks and served as the offensive coordinator at Wofford College in 1988-1989.

Coach Hamilton served his first coaching stint with the U.S. Air Force Academy from 1990-1996. During his last three seasons, he called the offensive plays for the Falcons in addition to serving as the quarterbacks coach. Air Force competed in four bowl games during Hamilton’s time there and ranked second nationally in rushing and in the top-25 total offense four times.

While at Air Force, Hamilton coached quarterback Beau Morgan, who finished in the top-10 in the Heisman Trophy voting and was named a third-team Associated Press All-American in 1996. Under Hamilton’s guidance, Morgan became the first player in NCAA history to pass and rush for over 1,000 yards in two different seasons. He also broke the NCAA single season rushing record for a quarterback, and became only the second player in NCAA history to run and pass for 3,000 yards in a career.

Hamilton’s first break as a head coach came at East Tennessee State, where he coached from 1997-2003 and amassed a record of 38-41.

During his first season at ETSU, Hamilton’s team led the Southern Conference in total offense, total defense and boasted the league’s Male Athlete of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year. The team’s 7-4 record in 1997 tied as the second highest win total ever by a Buccaneer squad and gave Hamilton the best record ever by a first-year head coach at ETSU. The Buccaneers set three single-season team records in 1997, including the marks for points per game and total offense per game. ETSU was ranked in the top-25 throughout much of the season, as two of Hamilton’s players were named first-team All-Americans by the Associated Press and the Sports Network.

Hamilton then moved on to be the head coach at Elon in 2004 and 2005. In his first season as head coach he guided the Phoenix to two Southern Conference victories, a first in the school’s young history as a conference member. He posted a 6-16 record at Elon over the two year span where he coached seven All-Southern Conference players, five Southern Conference Athletes of the Month, two Academic All-Conference players and one Academic All-American.

In 2006, Hamilton returned to the Air Force Academy to coach the fullbacks for his former college coach, Fisher DeBerry.Hamilton graduated in 1981 from Appalachian State University where he lettered for three years as quarterback under DeBerry. Hamilton earned his master’s degree in secondary education from The Citadel in 1986.

Hamilton and his wife, Jane, a native of Spruce Pine, NC, have three children – a son, Kye and two daughters, Jenna and Alanna.

Vince Reese - SlotsVince Reese is entering his first year as an assistant coach at Brevard in 2014. He comes to Brevard from Emory & Henry College in Virginia, where he coached the running backs during the 2013 season and worked with the wide receivers during the spring of 2014.

Reese spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at North Greenville University, helping guide the team to the Division II quarterfinals in 2011. He spent a season each coaching the running backs and tight ends. He also was an offensive quality control intern at Furman University for the 2010 season.

He played quarterback for Division III Bridgewater College in Virginia. After completing his eligibility, Reese spent a semester working with Bridgewater’s tight ends in the spring of 2010.

BC Football Coaching Staff

Joe Battaglia - Defensive Coordinator/Inside LinebackersJoe Battaglia came to Brevard in March of 2014 after a one-year stint at Midwestern State University where he was responsible for coaching the safeties and special teams units. His safeties led the Lone Star Conference in four categories during the 2013 season.

Before moving to Midwestern State, Battaglia worked at Juniata College in two separate stints. As defensive coordinator, he helped engineer a turnaround that saw the league’s worst defense become one of its best in nearly every defensive statistical category. He also spent a season at Stevenson University coaching defensive backs and special teams.

Battaglia graduated from Guilford College with a bachelor’s degree in sport management while spending four years as a linebacker. He was named a team captain during his senior campaign.

Justin Jefferson - Defensive Line/Strength and Conditioning

Justin Jefferson joined the Brevard coaching staff in 2011 to work with the Tornados defensive line and now adds coordinating the Tornados’ strength and conditioning program to his duties.

A 2009 graduate of Brevard College, Jefferson worked as the Defensive Line Coach at the Varitas Sports Academy in Greensboro, N.C. Prior to that, Jefferson worked with the Columbus Lions of the Southern Indoor Football League. He worked as a coaching assistant and the Offensive Line Coach, while serving as an assistant to the Pro CFL and AFL scout.

Jefferson was a three-year letterman on the defensive line for the Tornados. He finished his career at Brevard by being selected to the All-South Atlantic Conference football team in his senior season, as well as being named to the 2010 Don Hansen’s Super Region II team.

Randy Thompson - SecondaryRandy Thompson begins his first year as Brevard’s secondary coach in 2014 after a one-year stint at Lenoir-Rhyne University in which he coached in the national title game and mentored three first team all-conference performers, including the SAC Defensive player of the Year, a first team All-American, and a Capital One Academic All-American.

Before taking a position at Lenoir-Rhyne, Thompson was an assistant coach at Greensboro College, where he coached the secondary, wide receivers, and kick returners and was responsible for various administrative duties. He has coached at several Gastonia-area high schools.

Thompson received a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Western Carolina University in 2004 after a four-year playing career as a cornerback and wide receiver with the Catamounts.

Trey Bray - Wide ReceiversFormer Brevard player and 2014 graduate Trey Bray returns to his alma mater to coach the Tornados’ wide receivers this season.

Bray saw action in 15 games for the Tornados over a three-year career and ranks ninth all-time in the NCAA era at Brevard with 13.67 yards per catch. His career long reception came in last season’s 52-33 Senior Day triumph over conference foe Tusculum, when he hauled in a pass of 40 yards.

Thor Pate - Outside LinebackersThor Pate joined the Brevard Staff for the 2013 season and coaches the outside linebackers.

Pate spent two seasons as a volunteer coach for West Montgomery High School during his football career at Guilford College, helping with summer workouts, preseason camp, and handling sideline responsibilities.

While at Guilford College, Pate started at a variety of positions including TE/H Back, nose guard, and defensive end. Pate earned the Outstanding Senior Performer Award and was a one-time Dean’s List student.

Pate graduated from Guilford in May 2013 with a degree in History and a minor in Business Management.

Thor is the son of John and Tammie Pate, and has three sisters Kelly, Kathleen, and Kasey.

BC Football Coaching Staff

Jerel Drew - Tight Ends Jerel Drew will spend the 2014 season working with the tight ends after two years coaching fullbacks and spending time as Brevard’s Assistant Recruiting Coordinator. Drew began his career as a student-assistant coach with the football program in the spring of 2012.

Drew enjoyed a four-year career as a member of the Tornados football program as a fullback and slot receiver. He was named to the South Atlantic Conference Commissioners Honor Roll.

He graduated in 2012 with degrees in History and Education.

The Brevard College football team will look to improve upon last season’s 3-8 mark as the Tornados enter their seventh season of full NCAA Division II membership and eighth campaign under the leadership of head coach Paul Hamilton.

Brevard will play what many consider to be the most dif-ficult schedule in Division II this season. The 2014 slate features back-to-back road contests against Division I op-ponents Western Carolina and Liberty to open the season. In conference play, the Tornados will face three teams ranked in last year’s final Division II poll, including national runners-up Lenoir-Rhyne.

Brevard’s home games against last season’s No. 2-ranked Bears and fellow South Atlantic Conference opponent Win-gate will be broadcast locally on WMYA My40, marking the

second and third times in program history that the Tornados will appear on television.

“I don’t think there are any Division II teams in the country that open with a tougher first five games than we do,” said Hamilton. After playing the first two games of the season on the road at Division I opponents, the Tornados welcome last year’s No. 17 team in Carson-Newman to Brevard Memorial Stadium before traveling to North Greenville and hosting national championship participant Lenoir-Rhyne. “We’re going to have to be a very good football team early on for this season to be successful.”

A year ago, the Tornados were one of the most disciplined teams in the nation, finishing with the third-fewest penalties and penalty yardage of any Division II team and were fifth nationally with just 12 turnovers on the season. Brevard’s potent triple option offen-sive attack allowed the Tornados to amass 258.9 rushing yards per contest, the 12th-best total in the country and third among South Atlantic Conference teams. The Tornados return three starters on an offensive line that cleared the way for Tornados’ running backs to gain 2,848 yards on the ground last season, an average 4.65 yards per carry.

Preseason second team all-conference selection Kelvin Jeter will be called upon to spearhead the Tornados’ running game. The fifth-year senior from Gastonia, North Carolina led Brevard’s

three-headed rushing attack with 800 yards on the ground. He is Brevard’s all-time leader in rushing yards (2,520), total offense (2,520), and all-purpose yards (3,770), and ranks third with 6.83 yards per carry over the course of his career.

Joining Jeter in the backfield is Andre Overholt, a first team all-conference selection as a kick return specialist. A senior from Tryon, North Carolina, Overholt set a program record with 1,024 kick return yards last season and needs just 114 rushing yards to break 1,000 in a Brevard uniform. His career average of 6.76 yards per carry is fourth on Brevard’s all-time list, and he led the team last season with an astonishing 8.0 yards per carry. He has gained 3,016 all-purpose yards in his career, good for second in program history.

Rounding out the Tornados’ rushing attack will be Jordan Ollis, a senior from Columbus, North Carolina that was Bre-vard’s second-leading rusher with 786 yards in 2013. He fin-ished second in the conference with 11 rushing touchdowns on the season, which tied a Brevard single-season mark, and can become the Tornados’ all-time leader in touchdowns with nine scores this season. His best game in 2013 came in the 52-33 triumph over Tusculum on November 9 in which he scored five touchdowns, including four on the ground, to set a Brevard single-game record. The Football Ga-zette named him second team all-region for his performance in 2013.

Senior Tanner Wright is penciled in as the starting quarterback. In seven games played last year, Wright went 20-of-38 passing for 305 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. He also picked up 195 yards on the ground and reached the end zone five times. Kevin Herbst, who started the last three games of 2013, comes into preseason camp as the backup. As a true freshman, he passed for 243 yards and four scores on 10-of-21 passing with three interceptions. He also gained 77 yards on the ground and rushed for a touchdown.

Page 20: 2014 FALL SPORTS MEDIA GUIDE

While the offense returns seven starters from last year’s team, the team will look to gain experience quickly on the defensive side of the ball. Preseason first team all-conference linebacker Michael Gruber will anchor a defense that returns just three starters from a year ago. A senior, Gruber needs just 16 tackles this season to break the all-time Brevard record. His 124 tackles last season stand as the most in Tornados’ history for a single campaign. He also added a pair of interceptions and a fumble recovery to his impressive totals in 2013.

“Michael has been an outstanding football player for us since the day he got to campus,” remarked Hamilton. “He’s a just tough, hard-nosed football player.” Gruber’s skill has earned him recognition from multiple national publications. He was named second team all-region and an All-America honorable mention by The Football Gazette last season and garnered preseason All-America honorable mention accolades by the Collegiate Devel-opment Football League in 2014.

Senior defensive lineman Landon Allen will also be called upon to help lead a position group that will likely serve as a barometer of the team’s success this season. Allen has 98 career tackles, needing just 42 stops to move into the top ten in Brevard history. He is currently 10th all-time with 13 tackles for loss and ninth with five sacks in his career. Last season, he forced two fumbles, the second-highest total in the conference, and had three sacks that caused a loss of 26 yards. Junior safety Marcus Lunsford, Brevard’s lone returning defensive back, had 50 tackles, an interception, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery during his sophomore campaign.

After opening the season at Western Carolina and Liberty, the Tornados’ home opener comes against 2013 playoff participant and conference favorite Carson-Newman. Brevard travels to North Greenville in a noncon-ference tilt, then has a televised Homecoming matchup with a Lenoir-Rhyne squad that made a run to the national title game a year ago in the first of six straight conference games. The Tornados travel to Mars Hill on October 11 before its second televised game in three weeks against Wingate.

After a matchup at Catawba, the Tornados wrap up the home portion of the conference schedule with a No-vember 1 tilt against Newberry, which was picked third by the coaches in the conference preseason poll and finished last season with a No. 23 national ranking en route to its second-ever Division II playoff appearance. A Thursday night matchup at Tusculum concludes the conference slate before the Tornados return home for a matchup against the College of Faith to close the 2014 campaign.
