It started with a belief and a philosophy that if you work hard at something it can be achieved. The 2013 edition of the North Park football team entered the campaign as a squad without much it could bank success on. But as the season progressed and ultimately came to a close, the Vikings were left with one of the most successful seasons the program has produced in nearly 35 years. This year’s Vikings’ contingent is no different as North Park looks to build on the success it had from a year ago with some veteran leadership and a number of new faces eager to meet the challenges. “Each week presents a new opportunity and challenge, and we are going to approach it that way,” Vikings’ head coach Mike Conway said. A l t h o u g h North Park ended the year with a 3-7 record, the Vikings put to rest some of the doubts that carried over from years past. “Success is relative,” Conway said, “and three wins does not normally constitute a successful season. But now recognizing the task we had here last year, I understand a little more that we had our work cut out for us.” The North Park Football team went out and broke numerous records, most notably a 13-year, 89-game College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin losing streak with a 22-20 victory over Carthage College on Homecoming weekend October 5. In addition, the Vikings earned three CCIW victories, the most since the 1979 season which included victories over Augustana College (45-35, October 26), NP’s first win over Augie since 1971 and the first-ever in Rock Island, and a 35-32 win over Millikin which ended a 42-year losing streak against the Big Blue. The Vikings had their best finish in the final conference standings (tied for fourth) since the 1968 season and Coach Conway was named the CCIW

Coach of the Year, becoming the first-ever head football coach in NPU history to earn the honor. He attributes that honor to his coaching staff and the hard work and perseverance the players exhibited throughout the season. “When we first arrived we talked about being competitive and then about building a foundation to earn some respect,” said Conway, who also had the best finish for a first-year NPU football coach. “I think we gained at least a small amount of respect which was definitely important, and our players gained some much-needed confidence moving into 2014.” That started with the one-two punch of All-CCIW selections Dakota Conway and T.D. Conway.

Dakota earned First Team all-conference honors, becoming the first player to do so since the 2007 season. T.D. set the single-season mark for pass completions (218) and total yards passing as well as the single-game record for pass

completions against Hope College in the opening week of the season. “T.D. still has a ways to go, and as in any position, especially, at quarterback, you have to learn from your mistakes while you are in the heat of the battle,” Conway said. “It was tough for him but that should be expected from a first-year quarterback. T.D. maintained a good attitude about it and did not let things bother him. He progressed well as the season went on, and we only see him continuing to build on that success.” Dakota started all ten games at the wide receiver position last season and ranked second in conference receiving yards with a 60.8 average. He garnered 607 total yards on 49 catches and had a team-best six touchdowns while finishing with a team third-best 629 all-purpose yards.

SEASON PREVIEW

“I believe the senior leadership on defense is excellent and we anticipate much from upper classmen such as Darryl Blair, Daniel Roman and Devin Grote along with a very exciting class of newcomers,” Conway said. “We are going to be a more disciplined and confident defense in 2014.” On special teams, we return place kicker Noah Moore and punter John Gieseking who both are coming off breakout seasons. North Park opens the year with three tough opponents, including NCAA Division III playoff-qualifiers Concordia University Wisconsin and Washington University-St. Louis before the rigorous CCIW schedule. “We are going to take this season one game at

a time and not think ahead to our other opponents,” Conway said. “We are going to prepare to win every game. We were over-matched by the top-three teams in the conference last year, but we want to be competitive in those games this

year. I believe we have turned that around, and we hope that it develops into more wins, but you have to take things one step at a time. That’s all part of the process.”

In addition to these two young starters, there were many players who saw the field for the first time in their collegiate career or played in a new position. “Last year was an introduction into college football for a lot of young players,” Conway said. We are hoping tailbacks D.J. Jones and Drew Walkington can build upon the success that they had last season. With the implementation of a new offense during 2013, our players approach the 2014 season with more confidence.” The return of four-year starter Kenny Pistorius, junior Matt Davis and sophomore Logotaeao Etelagi should provide stability for the offensive line. We are also looking for a number of our offensive seniors to make an impact this year such as Alvin Cash, Andrew Gapsch, Chris Butz, Marcquel Hawkins and Dan Anderson along with a host of talented newcomers. Although the Vikings defense lost All-CCIW Second Team selection Bennett Dettlinger to graduation, they return nine starters including Second Team All-CCIW defensive back Philip Pendleton who ranked second on the team in total tackles with 65, including a career-high 12 tackles for the Chicago native in NP’s historic win over Millikin. “Phil had an outstanding year for us last season. This year we moved him back to free safety which is his natural position,” Conway said. “He along with safeties Ryan Boswell and Brian Palmer had exceptional seasons a year ago. Kyle Leibforth had a good second half of the season as did Brendon Dull and Joe Butz. We return our defensive front led by nose guard and interior linemen Matt Leibforth, Trevor Forker and Hunter Corrigan as well and who are all exceptional leaders.” The defensive back field will return three players from last year’s squad, Ryan McCann, Justin Davis and Mike Harris.

Conway, a native of Pittsburgh, enters his second season at North Park after a successful first year as the Vikings’ head coach where North Park broke numerous records, including an 89-game, 13-year College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin losing streak, not to mention a 42-year losing streak against Millikin University and the most CCIW victories by a North Park team since the 1979 season. Conway was also named the CCIW Coach of the Year, becoming the first coach in the history of North Park University to earn the honor, and had the best finish for a first-year NPU head football coach. Under his tutelage, North Park had its best finish (tied for fourth) in the conference since the 1968 season and the Vikings defeated Augustana College 45-35 for the first time since the 1971 season and the first time ever in Rock Island. Two of Coach Conway’s players, sons T.D. and Dakota, were named to the All-CCIW team with Dakota becoming the first player to earn First Team All-CCIW honors since the 2007 season. In addition, T.D. set the single season record for pass completions (218) and total yards passing (2,452) as well as the single-game record for pass completions (37) against Hope College in Week 1. Prior to North Park, Conway had successful coaching stints as both an assistant and head coach for NCCAA, NAIA and NCAA Division I, II and III programs, and most recently, had been coaching at California University of Pennsylvania. He served as the associate head coach and defensive coordinator at California University of Pennsylvania, an NCAA Division II institution, for 11 seasons. There, he helped guide the Vulcans to a 97-36 record, including five-straight playoff appearances since the 2007 season. The Vulcans

also earned three-straight Division I I Regional Championships and produced the No.1-ranked defense in 2007 under Conway’s leadership. In addition, Conway has coached three American Football Coaches Association All-Americans and three defensive backs that have continued their athletic careers into the National Football League and the Canadian Football League. Prior to coaching at California University, Conway served as the associate head coach and defensive and special teams coordinator at Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pa. in 2000. As the associate head coach, he was named the NAIA Assistant Coach of the Year and developed defenses ranked in the top three in all of NAIA during the 2000 season. Conway’s head coaching experience began at Olivet Nazarene University

in Bourbonnais, Ill., his alma mater, where he led the Tigers to a 31-14 record over a four-year period. As the head coach and offensive line coach, Conway turned the Tigers’ program around as he led them to a Victory Bowl championship in 1997 and a Mid-States Football Association Co-Championship in 1999. Conway was named the NCCAA (National Christian Colleges Athletic Association) Coach of the Year for the 1998 season and the Tigers finished as an NAIA National Championship finalist. His coaching career also includes stops as a defensive coordinator at Washington & Jefferson College, Washington, Pa., as well as an assistant coach of defensive ends at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind., and defensive line coach at Arkansas State University, Jonesboro, Ark. As an assistant at W&J for ten years and the

Game 1Hope ..................................................................... 41North Park ........................................................... 21

Sept. 7, 2013 @ Chicago, Ill. - 6 p.m. startHolmgren Complex (2,018)

Although the Vikings lost their home and season-opener to visiting Hope College 41-21 before a near sellout crowd at the Holmgren Athletic Complex, there was a buzz in the air about the new-look Vikings. Donning black jerseys with blue numbers and yellow trim for the first time in the history of the program, the Vikings electrified the crowd with a mixture of plays that lead to a 14-3 lead after one quarter. Freshman quarterback T. D. Conway who completed 37 of his 64 passes for 315 yards, threw two first-quarter TDs after Hope took the initial lead with a 28-yard field goal three minutes into the game. Conway’s first target was freshman sensation Alan Geneva who caught a 13-yard pass from Conway giving the Vikings their first lead of the game at 7-3. T.D. padded the lead with another touchdown strike, this time connecting with senior Nick Weinstein for a seven-yard score. Hope College did manage to trim NP’s lead to 14-13 heading into halftime with a field goal and a touchdown in the second quarter, but three turnovers, two fumbles and an interception, kept the Vikings in contention. Hope pushed its lead to 28-14 midway through the third quarter, but North Park trimmed the deficit to 28-21 when T.D. rushed for a one-yard touchdown, which ended a nine-play, 81-yard drive. A pair of scores from the visitors in the fourth quarter deflated the Vikings some down the stretch, but it deter the fact that there is some substance within the Vikings program. In all, North Park garnered 471 yards of total offense and had 33 first downs, compared to Hope’s 29. The Vikings also had 156 yards rushing with Marquis Magwood leading the charge with 97 yards on 11 carries.

Game 2Benedictine ........................................................ 36North Park ........................................................... 10

Sept. 14, 2013 @ Lisle, Ill. - 7 p.m. startSports Complex (971)

Coming off the heels of a sensational freshman debut where he threw for over 300 yards, T. D. Conway had yet another performance worthy of some national recognition. Conway connected on 25 of 45 passes for 228 yards at Benedictine, but four costly interceptions opened the door for the host Eagles to roll to a 36-10 victory, their first of the season in the non-conference tilt. The final score wasn’t nearly indicative of how the contest played out however. Up until late in the third quarter, the Vikings were looking at possibly their first victory of the season. Benedictine grabbed a 17-0 lead on a pair of touchdowns and a field goal heading into halftime, but T.D. and NPU made their second half comeback so quickly it nearly sent Benedictine to its second-straight loss. T.D. engineered the Vikings first scoring possession on a 10-play, 82-yard drive right out of the gate in the second half. T.D. made the first scoring connection to his older brother Dakota Conway when he found him for a nine-yard pass in the back of the end zone. North Park’s defense then held serve on BU’s ensuing possession and the Vikings closed the gap to 17-10 when a 36-yard drive ended in a 26-yard field goal from Noah Moore with 8:04 left in the contest. After Benedictine used a 61-yard drive to up its lead to 24-10, the Vikings immediately went back to work but their offense fell stagnant. NP had an opportunity when it started one of its final drives of the night with a little under two minutes remaining, but Benedictine put the game out of reach when T.D.’s pass on second and three was intercepted and returned 53 yards for a touchdown. In all, the Vikings garnered 380 yards of total offense, including 152 yards rushing, and had 19 first downs. Junior running back Drew Walkington led the ground game for the Vikings with seven carries for 66 yards.

Sept. 28, 2012 @ Chicago, Ill. - 1 p.m. startHolmgren Complex (2,005)

North Park inched ever so closer to its first victory of the season. The 14-10 loss to visiting Olivet College of Michigan proved that the Vikings do have what it takes to turn the program around. Despite the loss, NP held the advantage at halftime, for the second time in the first three games this season. Freshman quarterback T. D. Conway completed 19 of 39 passes for 135 yards, and was inches away on a few occasions throughout the contest to give North Park a larger advantage than the 7-6 edge it held at the break. Conway engineered the Vikings first scoring drive when an Olivet mistake on a punt attempt set up a 10-yard touchdown pass. Conway easily found his brother Dakota down the left sideline for the score and the Vikings staked a 7-0 lead with 3:35 left in the first quarter. Olivet closed the gap just before halftime when it ended a 68-yard drive on a one-yard run from its quarterback, but the point-after-touchdown (PAT) missed, keeping the momentum in favor of the hosts. North Park then drove down to Comets’ one-yard line, but a costly fumble allowed the Vikings only to come away with a field goal, a 20-yard boot from sophomore Noah Moore with just under nine minutes remaining in the third period. Olivet did respond with a touchdown to claim a four-point lead late in the period, but North Park stuffed the Comets attempt at a clock rundown after a fourth and five went for naught with 46 seconds remaining. The Vikings reclaimed possession and immediately gained a first down after Conway hooked up with freshman wide receiver Alan Geneva for an 11-yard pass, but an interception on the next play put the game out of reach for NP.

Dakota Conway

This day had been 12 years and 363 days in the making: For the first time since Oct. 7, 2000, North Park walked off the football field with a CCIW victory. The Vikings held off visiting Carthage College 22-20. Coach Conway had to fight back tears because of how much this meant not only to the seniors of the football team, but also to the student-athletes that came through the football program before them. “I’m a little overwhelmed because we play every game to win,” Conway said. “Even though we lost our first three games there were little things along the way that taught us how to win, and that culminated here today. I can’t say enough about our team in general, but especially our defense did an amazing job. Those guys fought so hard and fought through injuries.” North Park’s defense truly won the game as they held Carthage to under 300 yards of total offense and forced the Red Men to kick two field goals on a pair of scoring drives. The Vikings held a 10-0 lead through the first 20 minutes of the game after freshman quarterback T. D. Conway connected with his brother, Dakota, on a 17-yard touchdown pass, and Noah Moore added 20-yard field goal with 10:02 remaining the half. The Vikings then pushed their advantage to a 16-3 margin after Conway fired a 12-yard touchdown pass to senior Tyler Krebs with 12:53 left in the third quarter. A pair of Carthage touchdowns brought the visitors back to a comeback with a 17-16 edge just before the contest was delayed by lightning and rain for an hour and 18 minutes. Carthage picked up right where it left off after the delay as it pushed its lead up to 20-16 on a 26-yard field goal from Brett Burkari with 2:40 left in the third quarter. But T.D. Conway led the Vikings down field 80 yards in eight plays and culminated the drive with a 20-yard scoring pass to senior John Barnabee. Carthage got the ball back with 4:21 left in the contest, but senior linebacker Bennett Dettlinger came up with a crucial interception to thwart the Red Men’s chances on their third play of the drive. T.D. Conway finished the day completing 27 of 48 passes for 302 yards. Dakota Conway was on the receiving end of most of them, racking up 12 catches for 97 yards. Sophomore Drew Walkington led the Vikings’ ground game with 10 rushes for 60 yards.

Oct. 12, 2013 @ Bloomington, Ill. - 1 p.m. startTucci Stadium (3,000)

Despite 300 yards passing on 19 of 33 completions from freshman quarterback T. D. Conway, the Vikings couldn’t find an answer to Illinois Wesleyan’s offensive attack as the host Titans earned a 52-21 victory over North Park. A week after snapping an 89-game College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin football losing streak with a 22-20 victory over Carthage, North Park was looking to build on its momentum. But IWU combined for 531 yards of total offense and staked a 45-0 lead before the Vikings got on the board in the fourth quarter via a 63-yard touchdown pass from Conway to senior Nick Weinstein, which ended a three-play, 68-yard drive with 12:48 left. North Park added two more scores in the final period on Conway touchdown passes as the freshman phenom found Alan Geneva for a 20-yard strike and again on a 51-yard pass play with just over two minutes remaining in the contest. Geneva led the Vikings air attack as he had five catches for 97 yards, while Weinstein snagged two completions for 78 yards. Freshman Marquis Magwood added 10 carries for 43 yards on the ground as NP amassed 326 yards of total offense.

North Central racked up 542 yards of total offense and staked a 35-0 lead at halftime as they earned a 42-0 victory over the Vikings. North Park couldn’t find an answer for the Cardinals high-powered offense as NCC quarterback Spencer Stanek completed 12 of 15 passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore running back Oshayne Brown rushed for a pair of TDs and finished with 65 yards on six carries. Despite the loss, NP had a few strong individual performances as freshman quarterback T. D. Conway completed 11 passes for 130 yards. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Conway now has 1,420 yards passing this season with 10 touchdowns. Freshman Marquis Magwood led the Vikings ground game as he had 18 carries for 66 yards and sophomore Dakota Conway had two catches for 58 yards.

Game 7North Park ........................................................... 45Augustana ........................................................... 35

Oct. 26, 2013 @ Rock Island, Ill. - 6 p.m. startLindberg Stadium (634)

It may have taken the Vikings 13 years to end an 89-game CCIW football losing streak, but it only took them three games to earn their second conference win. North Park rode the solid performances of freshman quarterback T.D. Conway and freshman running back Marquis Magwood to stun host Augustana College 45-35 in Rock Island. The victory marked NP’s first win over Augie since the 1971 season and its first-ever victory in Rock Island. T.D., a first-year phenom from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was not going to deny the visitors a victory as he racked up 345 yards passing on 17 of 33 completions. He also threw for three touchdowns and had 17 yards on the ground as NP amassed 504 yards of total offense, the highest output by a Vikings team since the 2010 season. Augustana seized a 14-7 first quarter lead however as the hosts completed an 83-yard drive and returned T.D’s lone interception back 51 yards for a score. But North Park silenced the Augie faithful as it turned the deficit into a 24-14 advantage after T.D.’s 15-yard scoring pass to his brother Dakota, a 41-yard field goal from Noah Moore and Magwood’s one-yard run up the gut, which ended a nine-play, 78-yard drive with 2:59 left in the first half. Magwood, who had garnered only 115 yards total in his last two games, had a breakout game against Augie as he rushed for a career-high 167 yards on 33 carries and scored three touchdowns. His second TD came at the 10:42 mark of the third quarter when he bullied his way in on another one-yard run, this time ending a 76-yard drive to give the Vikings a 31-21 edge. Augustana closed within three with another score, but North Park would add two more scores – another Conway to Conway connection on a 30-yard pass, and a Magwood one-yard run—before Augustana put away its final score of the game with 3:15 left. Along with the performances of T.D. and Magwood, Dakota had 146 yards receiving on eight catches and freshman Cody Hood had three catches for 136 yards. Hood’s only touchdown of the game was one for the highlight reel as the first-year wide receiver from Schaumburg caught a 71-yard bomb from T.D. to put the Vikings up 7-0 before Augustana tallied back-to-back touchdowns in the first quarter.

Game 8Elmhurst ............................................................... 28North Park ............................................................14

Nov. 2, 2013 @ Chicago, Ill. - 1 p.m. startHolmgren Complex (994)

Seeking their first two-game College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin winning streak since the 1993 season, North Park just came up a little short with visiting Elmhurst College at the Holmgren Athletic Complex. Despite a 200-plus passing yards performance from freshman T.D. Conway, his fourth in the last five games, the Vikings couldn’t solve Elmhurst’s run game in the second half as the Bluejays earned a 28-14 win before a near capacity crowd. Conway, who threw for 283 yards on 24 completions, connected on only one touchdown in the contest. Elmhurst garnered 183 yards on the ground, led by 81 from sophomore running back Josh Williams, and finished with 315 yards of total offense. The Bluejays overcame a 14-7 deficit midway through the third quarter with a game-tying touchdown at the 3:47 mark, which ended a 62-yard drive, and added two more scores in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. North Park took the initial lead when Conway found his brother Dakota Conway for a three-yard score with just under 30 seconds remaining before halftime. Elmhurst tied it on a one-yard run from Williams, but the Vikings engineered another scoring drive, this time a 75-yard march that ended with a one-yard score from freshman Marquis Magwood at the 8:23 mark of the third. The Vikings ground game sputtered unfortunately as NP was only able to garner seven yards, but they kept their drives alive with sensational pass plays that led to nine catches for 105 yards for Dakota. Freshman Cody Hood added two catches for 48 yards, and Magwood had four catches for 40 yards.

Some games you just have to show a tip of your cap to a strong team. That was the case for North Park in its season finale with visiting Wheaton College. Wheaton attacked from the onset and as a result, earned a 58-0 victory over the Vikings in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tilt. Despite the loss, freshman quarterback T.D. Conway proved once again that he will be an elite QB in the conference in the years to come as he broke the single season passing yards record by finishing with 2,452 yards on 218 completions, also a single-season NPU record. Conway finished the day completing 17 of 33 passes for 117 yards. He needed only 65 yards coming into the contest to earn the record. Along with Conway’s historic day and historic season, North Park honored its 17 seniors for the hard work and dedication they’ve given to the program over the last four years. NPU honored John Barnabee, Zach Bates, Jordan Bevilacqua, Andy Bridge, Chris Broadway, Zach Curl, Darius Dacanay, Bennett Dettlinger, Zach Greco, Jose Guevara, Tyler Krebs, Nate Lawler, Joseph Mimms, T.J. Rodriguez, Tyrone Saunders, Taylor Simental and Nick Weinstein. This year’s Vikings’ squad is one that will be remembered for years to come under first-year head coach Mike Conway as not only the graduating class, but the host of first-year players and returnees set the standard for future Vikings to follow. North Park finished with three conference victories, the most since the 1979 season, and broke an 89-game, 13-year losing streak in the CCIW with its historic 22-20 victory over Carthage College on Homecoming weekend Oct. 5.

As Head Coach Mike Conway said, “We’re not here to think about the past, but focus on the future,”… Those words couldn’t have been more evident in the CCIW match up with Millikin University in Decatur. North Park was chasing a 42-year-old demon, having not won a game against the Big Blue since the 1971 season, a 20-17 victory. But the Vikings tamed their demons and pulled out an insurmountable victory with a 23-yard field goal from sophomore Noah Moore that put NP over the top for a 35-32 decision. Sophomore running back D.J. Jones, as well as fellow sophomore Dakota Conway and freshman quarterback T.D. Conway were key in the game-winning drive as they kept it alive with a few solid plays. Jones finished with 128 yards on 22 carries, but his run of three yards on a first and goal at the Millikin 8, after T.D.’s pass to Dakota for a seven-yard completion, set up Moore’s game-clinching boot with nine seconds left on the clock. Coming into the game, it was the 54th meeting between the schools with Millikin owning a 49-4 record. But North Park used the confidence of its strong freshman class and scored the most points against a Big Blue squad since the 1973 season (41 points). T.D. finished the game with 287 yards passing on 22 of 43 completions and two touchdowns. North Park took a commanding 26-7 lead on a pair of T.D. touchdown passes, including a 53-yard bomb to Cody Hood in the second quarter, and touchdown runs from Jones and Marquis Magwood, but Millikin came storming back with back-to-back scores to close within 26-21 with 3:31 left in the third quarter. A 56-yard run from Jones ended an 85-yard drive that put NP ahead 32-21, but another touchdown and field goal for MU knotted the score at 32-all. North Park garnered 441 yards of total offense and gained 21 first downs to Millikin’s 20. The Vikings were also a perfect 3 of 3 on fourth down conversions and finished four out of their five scoring chances in the red zone. Seniors Tyler Krebs and John Barnabee finished with four and three catches, respectively for a combined 65 yards to lead the receiving corps as well.

ACADEMIC SUCCESSLIVES OF SIGNIFICANCE AND SERVICE.

The mission of North Park, as an intentionally Christian university of the Evangelical Covenant Church, is to prepare students for lives of significance and service through liberal arts, professional studies, and theological education. Our vision, building on our core institutional identity — Christian, urban, multicultural — is to fashion a university of uncommon character and enduring excellence where faith and learning meet. Our philosophy clearly identifies and develops high caliber students. We foster an atmosphere of academic excellence that allows our students the chance to pursue a multitude of options after graduation. In the past year, we have had over 46 Academic All-Conference and six Academic All-Region who counted themselves proud to be North Park Viking student-athletes. Through both campus and private organizations, on the local and national level, our student athletes recognize the need to give back to their community and constituencies. Members of the Vikings’ football team and the Student Athlete Advisory Council sponsor “Viking Kids Day”, hosting underprivileged local youth at our home athletic events, as well as providing tutoring and mentorship. The Student Athlete Advisory Council and the CHAMPS/Lifeskills program nominate Viking athletes for the NCAA National Leadership Conference.

* North Park’s 13 selections is the most for the program in the last eight years as only 10 or more student-athletes have been selected for the prestigious academic award for the football team three times in the last eight academic school years. In order to qualify for CCIW Academic All-Conference, a student-athlete must carry a 3.30 grade point average or higher and must have been a letter winner for the season.

PRESIDENT DAVID L. PARKYN

David L. Parkyn has served as president of North Park University in Chicago since 2006. Previously he was Provost and Senior Vice President at Elizabethtown College, following two decades of service on the faculty and in administrative appointments at Messiah College. By vocation an educator, President Parkyn has dedicated his professional career to teaching undergraduates and leading institutions of higher learning. He earned a bachelor of arts from Messiah College (Grantham, Penn.), a master of divinity from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (South Hamilton, Mass.), and a doctor of philosophy from Boston College (Chestnut Hill, Mass.). He also completed post-graduate study at both Boston College and Harvard University (Cambridge, Mass.).

President Parkyn is an active leader in higher education in Illinois and nationally. He has been active in the Society for College and University Planning, is a member of the Board of Directors for NAICU, is a member of the Executive Committee of the Associated Colleges of Illinois, and is a member of the Board of Directors for Illinois Campus Compact. President Parkyn also provides leadership in our athletic conference as chair of the CCIW President’s Council. President Parkyn is married to Dr. Linda Parkyn, an accomplished teacher and scholar who currently serves as professor of Spanish and director of the Honors Program at North Park University. Previously Professor Parkyn was on the faculty at Messiah College, served as a Fulbright Scholar at the Universidad Autónoma de Aguascalientes, Mexico, from

2001-2002, and continues as a Fulbright Senior Specialist. Married for nearly 40 years, the Parkyns have two children. Their daughter, Betsy Parkyn Cruickshank, is married to Calder Cruickshank. They have three children; Will, Anna, and Cate. The Cruickshanks reside in Marblehead, MA. Their son, Nathaniel David Parkyn, is married to Casey, and they live in Philadelphia, PA. They are the proud parents of twins, Carter and Ella.

North Park University has a rich history which has shaped the institution we are today. Established by a Swedish immigrant faith community on the far north side of Chicago, North Park is an academic community molded by a commitment of faith, located in the heart of a world-class city, and comprised of people from myriad of world cultures and ethnic traditions. We summarize this heritage and present character in three short phrases: North Park University is Christian, urban, and intercultural. In his recent book, Seeing the Light: Religious Colleges in Twenty-First Century America (The Johns Hopkins University Press, 2010), higher education scholar Samuel Schuman profiled North Park University and described it as a place which is “difficult to compare to others.” Schuman wrote: North Park University “is, on the one

hand, vigorously religious and strongly denominational with a continuing tie to a particular immigrant population, and yet equally strongly and vigorously open to students from the widest diversity of backgrounds. It occupies a pleasant green and historical campus, in the very middle of a bustling major American city. Perhaps most impressive and surprising, not only is North Park University Christian, urban, and multicultural, but it has managed to be all those things and also to be coherent.” As you visit the University’s web site, and as you have occasion to visit our campus and know the people who teach and learn here, I’m confident you’ll discover for yourself this distinctive character, intentional ethos, and purposeful mission and vision central to North Park University. Welcome to North Park!

History of Success At North Park University, our past athletic success is considerable. We choose to honor that tradition actively because we know the roots of our historical achievements help us continue to build a vibrant, diverse, and successful offering of NCAA athletic programs. Our men’s basketball team has gained national attention by being crowned NCAA Division III national champions five times. Only four other NCAA basketball programs in any division have matched that level of success. Our baseball program has won six CCIW titles and has competed in six NCAA National Tournaments. They are one of two teams in the CCIW to have qualified for the conference tournament every year since 2010. Several Vikings hold positions in the NCAA record books for career and single season statistical accomplishments. Football, men’s basketball, and baseball have had over 50 players sign professional contracts after their Viking careers.

A Bright Future Our present accomplishments are just as considerable. Today, we continue to garner national attention in a number of sports, and we are poised to continue the winning Viking tradition. Our men’s soccer team won CCIW titles in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2010, competed in the NCAA National Tournament in 2005, 2006, 2010, 2011 and 2012 and has been nationally ranked from 2005-2013. They have had 57 All-CCIW players since 1999. Our women’s rowing team has earned gold, silver, and bronze medals in their first three years of competition at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta. This feat has been achieved by very few rowing teams. Our women’s basketball team has won seven tournament championships since 2003.

Our Baseball team competed in the NCAA tournament in 2012, and has had numerous All-Region and All-America award winners, including one prestigious Rawlings National “Gold Glove” recipient. North Park University athletes have distinguished themselves off the playing field serving as North Park University student senate president in 2012 (Casey Smagala - football) and 2013 (Tim Ahlberg - soccer). Vikings were named Academic All Americans in 2012, 2013 and 2014.The CCIW Man of the Year in 2012 (football - Josh Startup) and 2013 (Ahlberg) were North Parkers. Recent academic recognition has gone to Fulbright Scholar Tim Ahlberg in 2013 and to Shelby Switzer (volleyball) who was the recipient of the prestigious NCAA Post Graduate Scholarship in 2014.

During his tenure at North Park his focus has been on the improvement of facilities, staff, and programs. The River Park Soccer/Track Complex was completed in 2000 and renovated in 2013 the Holmgren Athletic Complex was dedicated in 2004 and improved in 2013, and the Helwig Recreation Center was opened in the fall of 2006. Varsity locker rooms have been renovated in 2011 and 2014. Women’s golf and rowing were added as varsity programs in 1999 and 2003. A recent expansion of the athletic department has been the implementation of the graduate assistant program in 2008. This fall women’s tennis returns after an eleven year hiatus. Surridge also has an extensive career in collegiate coaching (football, women’s basketball, baseball, and softball) with a combined career record of 571 - 397 including ten conference championships and seventeen tournament titles (one national championship). He holds a doctorate in zoology from the University of Nebraska and was inducted into the Concordia University–St.

Paul (1994) and Concordia University–Wisconsin (2006) halls of fame. Dr. Surridge is married to Mary Surridge, who serves as the Vice President of Development at North Park University. They are the proud parents of one daughter, Jessie, a sophomore honor student at Von Steuben High School.

Our pre-professional programs are tracks to follow if you plan on pursuing a specialized field in graduate school, like medicine, dentistry, art therapy, or law.

Some students come to North Park with a clear path already, but many others start without a firm decision for a major. That’s just fine: we also offer specific resources for “undecided” students, along with our Core Curriculum that will give you a broad introduction to the disciplines you can pursue. HOLMGREN ATHLETIC COMPLEXCompleted in 2004, this complex is among North Park’s most functional and heavily used facilities. The complex includes the Ted Hedstrand football field, designed for both practice and play for recreational and intercollegiate use. The field features a state-of-the-art, injury-reducing artificial turf system, new bleachers, and a press box. Field lighting enables the complex to be used into the evening hours, providing more flexibility in programming.
