Description:
This is an ongoing Historical Streams research study by Eymund Diegel of CSI Gowanus (Creek Scene Investigation) using community generated research and insights from the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club, Proteus Gowanus and the Gowanus Canal Conservancy. By reaching out to residents of the Gowanus Canal watershed, stories of flooded basements and rumors of buried ponds and streams were collected to begin a comprehensive database of opportunities for urban stream restoration as part of the Gowanus Canal Superfund Cleanup program and the City of New York Green Infrastructure Plan. This research was presented at the White House Maker Faire on 18 June 2014. Raw data on historic stream mapping is available by contacting [email protected]. See http://vimeo.com/50839044 for an overview of Lost Rivers.

Studying our high resolution balloon aerials for “CSI” clues prompted us to inspect local storm grates and shorelines. We found clean water from historic farm springs diverted into combined sewers, causing unnecessary pollution into the Gowanus Canal. Piecing together all these clues we were able to remap our forgotten streams. We reported these springs to the City as part of their Green Infrastructure Plan to reduce sewer overflows.
