over the last several months GRIP Leadership hasconducted ‘Leading & Teaching’ conferences forteachers throughout australia. one of the questions

I posed to teachers during that conference was, “Can you to think of a time in your teaching career when something occurred and your response to that event was a very heartfelt ‘This is why I do this job!’?”

Leadership

Figure 1. Influences on our values.

“The greatest teachers i’ve ever met didn’t teach me facts from a text

book. They taught me about myself and the kind of person i want to be. Teachers don’t always realise the

impact (influence) that they can have on a person’s life – you do make a

difference everyday.” a.M.inTheTeacher,2007

asaYear10studentIwouldsitforhours during the holidays withmy text books sprawled across

the study tables at the local library.during theholidaysmostofmy friendswould be out at the nearby shoppingcentreormaybetheskate-parkbutnotme, I barely left the library. You mightassume that Iwasadedicatedstudentor perhaps low on social options, butneitherofthesewerethecase.Sowhatwould cause a normal fifteen year oldboyfromthesuburbstospendhisdaysinthepubliclibrary?Mentoring.

at the time, I didn’t knowmuch aboutwhat mentoring was, but during thoselong days at the library I was beingshaped, formed and moulded into theschool captain that I would becometwo years later. none of this learningwas from library text books, but fromRob.IhadmetRobwhenIfirststartedhigh school a few years earlier, andRobwas two years older thanme. hewasoneof thosestudentswhoalwayshada leadershippositionofsomekindandwas loved by every student in theschool.ourmentoring relationshipwasnot the resultofa traditionalstructuredmentoringprogram, butofwhatImightcall ‘informal mentoring’ in which theregular time I would spend with RobwouldprovetobesignificantindefiningthepersonIwouldbecome.

ItwasprobablyjustluckthatImetRobwhilststandingbehindhiminaqueueasatwelveyearold,butitwasadeliberatedecisionofminetocontinuefollowinginhisfootstepsforthenextfiveyears.What

amazed me was the similar deliberatenature in which Rob would share histime, knowledge and experience withme.althoughourschoolhadnotpairedusupinaformalmentoringarrangement,it felt as if Robwas aworld expert onmentoring. We would sit next to eachotherintheschoolband, butthat’saboutthe extent of any formal arrangement.anythingelsewasbecausehedecidedtobefriendayoungandenthusiastickidcalledRonan,becausethat’sthekindofguyhewas.

In regards to the public library, that’swhereRobwouldgomostdaystostudyforhisfinalYear12exams.Eventhoughmy Year 10 homework was hardly a

demandingtask,Iwouldtakemyselfoffto the library so that I could sit acrossfromRobat theothersideof theopenplantableseagerto learnanythingthatI could from the most revered studentleader in our school. and it happened.during our casual chats I learnteverything from his outlook on schoolwork, teamwork and goal setting, tohis favourite hotdog option (nick’s hotdogswasjustoutsidethelibraryandwewouldgotheremostdaysforlunch).

By the time Rob graduated from ourschool, hehadplayedanimportantrolein developing me as a future studentleader. Even more than that, he haddevelopedmeintothekindofleaderthat

Thebeautyofmyownstory is that thementoringoccurredquitenaturally.Ihavehadplentyofdiscussionswithteacherswhohavesharedwithmehowtheirmorestructured‘studenttostudentmentoringprograms’neverreallygetpastfirstgearandoftenstallintheprocess.

Reflecting on my own experienceand the many conversations I havehad with teachers, I am able to offerfour suggestions towards launchinga successful ‘student to student’mentoring program at your school, regardlessofwhetheryouareaprimaryschoolorsecondaryschool.

Have your senior leaders as mentors.I hear many schools share that theyprefer to protect their main groupof student leaders for ‘special roles’and then use another group of seniorstudents as mentors in their program.Structurally this is appealing, howeverin reality youngerstudentswant to feelthat they are spending time with themostreveredstudentsintheschool;therecognisedstudent leaders.Byutilisingthe senior leaders in this way, you willgenerate significant enthusiasm andparticipationfortheyoungerstudents.

Have a variety of mentoring settings. Potentialmentorsandmenteesalikewillbeinspiredbydifferentthings.Creatingmentoringenvironmentsinsport, music, art, leadership and other areas willcreateamorenaturalrelationship, ratherthanassumingthatmentoringinjustoneofthesedisciplineswillbeappealingorbeneficialforallstudents.

declare a short time-frame.It is common for schools to work inone year time frames. however, somementoringrelationshipssimplydonotgothedistanceandoftenfeel likeafailureiftheydonotlasttheyear.Irecommendlaunching a mentoring program thatwill last just one term, with only afew gatherings over the term. at theconclusion, invite students to continueonlyiftheywish.Youwillfindthatthosewho do continue will draw amazingbenefitfromit.

Provide resources but give freedom. Mentoringispersonal, andhencecannotbescripted.Itiswise, however, topreparementorsfortheirroleinageneralsenseandtoassisttheminsimplepreparationfor mentoring discussions. Studentmentors should feel suitably supportedgoing into the process and also feelcomfortabletomaketheirowndecisionsabout how to help their mentees oncetherelationshipisunderway.

To assist those wanting to initiatemore deliberate mentoringactivities in their school, GRIPLeadershiphasdevelopedabrandnew resource called ‘SuccessfulStudentMentoring.’

in a relay race, each team has to ‘want’ the baton.as you would have experienced, some students may notwant to be considered as a leader in the school. This canoccurformanyreasons;fearofresponsibility, toomuchwork, lowselfesteem,or the imageof itbeingnot funorway too‘uncool’.Studentsteachingtheirpeersaboutleadershipcanbeaneffectivewaytotransformanegativemindsettowardsleadership. a studentmay benefit significantly from havingtheir peers teach them about what being a leader involves, howitcanberewarding, enjoyableandofservicetoothers.
