HEAD COACH JEFF BUXTONJeff Buxton enters his third season as Grove

City College head women’s tennis coach.Buxton joined the College’s athletic department

in July 2012 as head tennis coach and as an assis-tant professor of physical education and exercisescience.

In his first season, the Wolverines went 9-6 over-all and 7-2 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.Current senior Caroline McGuire captured theconference’s Player of the Year award.

In 2013, Grove City posted a 9-6 mark overall,including an 8-1 record in conference action.

As men’s coach, he has guided Grove City’s men’s team to two confer-ence titles and consecutive berths in the NCAA Division III ChampionshipTournament. He earned PAC Coach of the Year honors in April 2013.

Buxton came to Grove City after spending nine years as the generalmanager of One on One Fitness Consultants in State College, Pa. In thatposition, Buxton developed One on One’s personal fitness training instructorprogram and educational curriculum. He also coordinated and oversawthe development of all staff members

He has been certified as a National Academy of Sports Medicine Per-formance Enhancement Specialist and as an ACE Certified Personal Trainer.

He earned a bachelor’s of science degree in kinesiology/movementscience from Penn State in 2003. He completed his master of science inexercise science and health promotion at California University of Pennsyl-vania in December 2010.

A native of Wyoming, Pa., Buxton lives in Grove City with his wife andtheir son and daughter.

2014-15 SEASON PREVIEWThe 2014-15 season could be a special one for the

Grove City College women's tennis program.With six returning letterwinners, including five Presi-

dents' Athletic Conference individual flight championsfrom last season, and a strong freshman class, third-year head coach Jeff Buxton and the Wolverines will bein the hunt to reclaim their spot as conference champi-ons and return to the postseason for the first time inthree seasons.

Leading the way for the Wolverines will be a pairof seniors in co-captains Caroline McGuire and LeahWhite.

The 2012 PAC Player of the Year and conferencechampion at first singles, McGuire battled through in-juries last season but still managed to finish as theconference runner-up at first singles.

White will look to move up in the lineup and buildoff a strong junior campaign that culminated with aconference title at sixth singles. Along with posting a13-8 record in singles competition, White also saw ex-tensive action in the doubles lineup last season.

Junior Karolina Lagerquist and fellow junior KendraTetrick will both provide great experience to theprogram's most veteran lineup in three seasons.

After a brilliant freshman campaign that saw herwin the PAC title at third singles, Lagerquist split time

Junior Karolina Lagerquist has won three total confer-ence titles during her first two seasons at Grove City.She is a two-year starter and letterwinner.between first and second singles last season, eventu-ally finishing as the conference runner-up at secondsingles. She posted a 10-10 record in singles competi-tion and a 17-5 record in doubles action.

Tetrick will compete to maintain her spot in thelineup at third singles after reaching the conferencechampionship match at that flight last season. Tetrickalso paired with then-freshman Linnea Peters to winthe conference crown at second doubles, and sheposted a 12-8 record in singles competition and a 13-6 record at doubles during the season.

Junior Leah Thomsen returns after missing last sea-son and will compete for a full-time spot this year.

Sophomores Peters and Julie Becker both returnto the Wolverines after playing integral roles in theteam's success as freshmen. Peters made an immedi-ate impact in her first year at Grove City, winning thePAC title at fifth singles while also teaming with Tetrickfor the second doubles crown.

Becker will look for an increased role this seasonafter proving to be a key part of the Wolverine doubleslineup and also seeing spot duty in singles play.

Grove City will open its season September 6 atAllegheny's Nancy J. Heath Invitational, facing the hostGators and Baldwin-Wallace.

The Wolverines open their Presidents' Athletic Con-ference schedule on September 13, hosting both Tho-mas More and Thiel.

Junior Kendra Tetrick is a two-year starter for GroveCity. She is a returning conference champion at seconddoubles.

2013-14 IN REVIEWWith five letterwinners returning, including the top

four singles players, the Grove City College women'stennis team was poised to remain among the top pro-grams in the Presidents' Athletic Conference yet againduring the 2013-14 season.

Under the leadership of second-year head coachJeff Buxton, the Wolverines did just that, recording a 9-6 overall record, an 8-1 record in league play and asecond-place finish at the 2013 PAC Championships.

Grove City won conference titles in four of the nineflights at the championships- two in singles and two indoubles.

Freshman Linnea Peters capped a strong first sea-son by winning the league crown at fifth singles whilejunior Leah White earned the title at sixth singles.Junior Caroline McGuire teamed with sophomoreKarolina Lagerquist to win the first doubles title whilePeters and sophomore Kendra Tetrick were victoriousat second doubles.

After opening the season on September 13 with a9-0 setback at perennial power and eventual nationalquarterfinalist Carnegie Mellon, the Wolverines openedconference play with an 8-1 victory at Thomas Morethe following day.

The Wolverines opened their home schedule onSeptember 16 with a 6-3 victory over league foe Genevabehind victories at the top four singles slots.

Grove City then improved to 2-0 in PAC play withan 8-1 home win over Waynesburg on September 19after sweeping the doubles competition.

The squad then traveled to Fredericksburg, Va. forthe 2013 Intercollegiate Tennis Association SoutheastChampionship. McGuire and Lagerquist highlighted theweekend by advancing to the finals of the Blue 1Doubles draw.

Following a 7-2 setback to Westminster on Sep-tember 24, the Wolverines rattled off six consecutivevictories to close their fall season, including five in con-ference play.

Despite playing without McGuire in the lineup, theWolverines managed to earn a hard-fought 5-4 victoryover defending conference champion Saint Vincent onSeptember 25.

The Wolverines took two of three doubles matchesand then, keyed by a super-tiebreaker victory by fresh-man Julie Becker at sixth singles, split the singlesmatches to earn the win.

McGuire returned to the Wolverine lineup as GroveCity kicked off the month of October with an 8-1 winover Washington & Jefferson. The Wolverines wouldthen earn consecutive 9-0 victories at Chatham andBethany, dropping just four total games to the Cou-gars and two to the Bison in the sweeps.

Grove City continued its road trip by visiting Thielfor the conference finale on October 10. White earneda 6-0, 6-0 victory at fifth singles as the Wolverines tookall six singles matches in an 8-1 triumph.

The Wolverines wrapped up their fall regular sea-son by visiting non-conference foe Penn State Behrendon October 14.

Despite dropping close matches at first and sec-ond singles, the Wolverines earned a 7-2 victory toconclude their fall schedule with a 9-3 record.

After a strong first day of competition at the 2013PAC Championships at the Pennbriar Club in Erie, theWolverines finished with four individual conferencechampionships and second place overall in the teamstandings.

Along with Grove City's conference champions, eachof whom earned All-PAC First Team status in their re-spective flights, McGuire (first singles), Lagerquist (sec-ond singles) and Tetrick (third singles) each earnedSecond Team accolades.

Becker and senior Lauren Troxel garnered Honor-able Mention status at third doubles after winning theconsolation match in that flight.

The Wolverines competed in matches against Slip-pery Rock, Mount Union and Mercyhurst during thespring season.

ABOUT THE PACFounded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Confer-

ence continues its mission of promoting intercollegiateathletics and the pursuit of academic excellence.

Comprised of 10 select private colleges and uni-versities - Bethany College, Chatham University, GenevaCollege, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, ThielCollege, Thomas More College, Washington & JeffersonCollege, Waynesburg University and Westminster Col-lege - the PAC remains a unique organization in thisday of high-pressure intercollegiate athletics.

With academics at the center of each member’sphilosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that anathletic program is a part of college life, but not anentity in itself.

During the 2005-06 academic year, Chatham,Geneva and Saint Vincent all joined the PAC. Chathamcompeted for PAC championships for the first timeduring the 2007-08 academic year. Saint Vincent firstcompeted for conference titles in 2010-11.

Geneva became eligible for conference titles in2011-12.

The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports.All-Conference status is awarded in all 19 sports. Headcoaches select all-league squads for all team sports,while in individual sports such as cross country andtennis, all-PAC accolades are based upon performancesat the conference championships.

The PAC annually awards its men’s and women’sAll-Sports Trophies to the schools which perform bestacross the board in conference competition.

Grove City won the Women’s All-Sports Trophy forthe 2013-14 academic year while Washington &Jefferson earned the Men’s All-Sports Trophy.

In 2013-14, the league named a conference-record902 student-athletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll,which recognizes all participating student-athletes whoattain a term grade-point average of 3.60 or aboveduring their semester of competition.

The beautifully landscaped cam-pus of Grove City College stretchesover 150 acres and includes 28 neo-Gothic buildings. It is considered oneof the loveliest in the nation.

While the College has changedto meet the needs of the society itserves, its basic philosophy has re-mained unchanged since its found-ing in 1876. It is a Christian, liberalarts institution, dedicated to theprinciple of providing the highestquality education at the lowest pos-sible cost.

Wishing to remain truly inde-pendent and to retain its distinctivequalities as a private school gov-erned by private citizens (trustees),it is one of few colleges in the coun-try that does not accept federalfunds.

Affiliated with the PresbyterianChurch (U.S.A.), but not narrowly de-nominational, the College believesthat to be well-educated a studentshould be exposed to the centralideas of the Judeo-Christian tradi-tion.

Grove City College offers under-graduate degrees in liberal arts, sci-ences, engineering, business, andmusic and is distinguished as a na-tional leader in education.

Grove City’s programs in elec-trical and mechanical engineeringare accredited by the EngineeringAccreditation Commission Board ofthe Accreditation Board for Engi-neering and Technology.

The “big business school cur-riculum” prepares students fortoday’s global business reality. Anextensive variety of internship op-portunities are provided across thecurriculum.

Grove City College wants its stu-dents to be prepared in this age ofmobile information technology.

Each entering freshman receivesa tablet computer which is his or hersto keep upon graduation with afour-year degree.

This is part of the InformationTechnology Initiative, a total pro-gram integrating technology acrossthe curriculum.

The College believes that its stu-dent body has a unique mix of tal-ents and abilities.

Its Career Services programhelps students identify those key as-sets during the first year and thenbuilds a four-year strategy to helpthem pursue a satisfying career.

Personal counseling, profes-sional speakers, databases, alumnicontacts, summer internships, cor-porate visits, employer presentationsand more are incorporated into thecareer preparation experience.

Grove City follows the semestercalendar plan, in addition to offer-ing two-week sessions in Januaryand May.

Most of the 2,500 students livein separate men’s and women’s dor-mitories. The rest are local com-muters or married students.

A full program of cultural, pro-fessional, athletic and social activi-ties is offered, including 19 intercol-legiate varsity athletic teams.

Grove City, a town of 8,100people, is located 60 miles north ofPittsburgh. It is located nearInterstates 79 and 80 and has a mu-nicipal airport.

ATHLETIC FACILITIESAll 19 of Grove City College’s intercollegiate

varsity athletic teams utilize the College’s superiorfacilities for competition, practices and off-seasontraining and conditioning.

Grove City’s athletic facilities have undergonenumerous renovations and improvements in re-cent years, with more upgrades scheduled in theimmediate future.

On lower campus, Robert E. Thorn Field is hometo the College’s football and track and field teams.The College installed CSTurf at Robert E. ThornField. CSTurf is a synthetic playing surface thatfeatures polyethylene LSR grass fibers and a rub-ber infill system.

The College also installed lights and resurfacedthe 8-lane track around the field. Grove City alsoreconfigured its setup for track meets during theserenovations.

In 2011, the College installed a new state-of-the-art scoreboard and new bleachers on the visi-tors’ side at Thorn Field.

These upgrades benefit the entire campus com-munity as the complex is used by both the College’sclub sports teams and its intramural program,along with the varsity teams.

The track is also available for use by recre-ational walkers and joggers. The complex also fea-tures 10 all-weather tennis courts next to the sta-dium.

Phillips Field House, located at the north endof the complex, features several locker rooms, anathletic training room, meeting rooms and coaches’offices. It is used by the football, track and tennisprograms throughout the academic year.

The Physical Learning Center (PLC) houses theGrove City College Arena, home to the College’sbasketball and volleyball programs.

In summer 2012, the College renovated theArena by installing new lighting and a new playingfloor. In recent years, the Arena has also receivednew scoreboards and scorers’ tables.

The James E. Longnecker Pool is one of the nation’spremier small-college venues for both swimmingand diving and water polo.

In addition, the PLC features the James E.Longnecker Pool, one of the premier aquatic facili-ties in the region.

Each year, Grove City hosts the Presidents’ Ath-letic Conference Swimming and Diving Champion-ships at the state-of-the-art facility.In 2012, the College also hosted the Collegiate Wa-ter Polo Association Division III Championships atthe James E. Longnecker Pool.

The PLC also features a second pool, the Rec-reational Pool, which is used by members of theCollege community year-round.

A fitness room featuring aerobic and Cybexequipment and a separate weight room with freeand mechanized weights are also keystone areasof the facility.

The PLC also features six racquetball/handballcourts as well as two adjacent intramural rooms.The intramural rooms feature four basketball courts,four indoor tennis courts, four volleyball courts, anindoor track and two indoor jumping pits.

The College installed new synthetic flooring andseveral new electronic scoreboards throughout theintramural rooms.

The Physical Learning Center houses the ath-letic training room, locker rooms and offices forcoaches and physical education faculty.

The College recently constructed a new officesuite for coaches and athletic administration, whilealso incorporating its Athletic Hall of Fame area.

Grove City’s outdoor athletic facilities have alsoreceived numerous upgrades in recent years.

The varsity soccer field, College Field, was ex-panded and re-sodded during the summer of 2005.College Field also received a new press box dur-ing the summer of 2007.

Meanwhile, Grove City’s baseball and softballfacilities recently received major facelifts as newdugouts, new fencing and electronic scoreboardswere installed on both fields.

The home of Grove City’s football and track andfield teams, Robert E. Thorn Field has receivednumerous renovations in recent years.
