Healthy EncoresTM is a non-profit organization that provides on-going health information, awareness and advocacy initiatives that focus on reducing health disparities and inequalities in the United States (Baltimore, Maryland) and the U.S. Virgin Islands by organizing community health fairs. These health fairs offer early detection for chronic diseases, patient information, and access to medical resources.
The series takes place in picturesque St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands on July 18 - 20, 2014. Healthy EncoresTM presents an opportunity for the healthcare and corporate communities to present information and issues to various diverse communities in an effort to both raise health awareness and impact behaviors in historically “at risk” populations. While Healthy Encores TM will spotlight diabetes awareness, management and prevention, it will also address other health disparities.
Healthy EncoresTM is supported by the community and Congresswoman Donna Christensen. She is very passionate about this event; as a member of the Health Committee in the House of Congress. Congresswoman Christensen also participates at the event each year utilizing her medical expertise.

Cancer is a chronic disease that is the second leading cause of death in both the United States and the Virgin Islands. The Cancer Facts and Figures 2010 from the American Cancer Society states, “cancer accounts for one in every five deaths in the United States, and one in every three Americans alive today will eventually develop cancer.” The mortality data in the Virgin Islands mirror national trends, with Breast and Prostate cancers being the most common for female and male deaths due to cancer.
Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) do not exist in the Virgin Islands. Medicaid managed care is also non-existent in the territory. The Government of the Virgin Islands, as the largest employer, offers health insurance coverage to its employees. Health insurance fees and increased costs of health insurance continue to be a barrier for low-income families.
Diabetes in the Virgin Islands affects more Black and Hispanic residents and is more common in older adults and persons with lower education and income levels.
Heart disease is the number one leading cause of death to Virgin Islanders.
Limitations in access to care extend beyond basic causes, such as a shortage of health care providers (prevalent in the Virgin Islands), or a lack of facilities. Individuals also may lack a usual source of care or may face other barriers to receiving services, such as financial barriers (having no health insurance or being underinsured), and personal barriers (sexual orientation, cultural differences, language differences, not knowing what to do, or environmental challenges for people with disabilities).

About the Founder
Lolo is the host of “The Quiet Fire,” on Radio One’s WWIN-FM (Magic 95.9). She is the preferred nighttime announcer of Baltimore’s adult radio listener’s ages 30-64.
In 1981, Lolo started her radio career at Lucky 13 (WSTA) in her hometown of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. While at WSTA radio, she was also the manager of Studio 54, St. Thomas’s hottest nightclub (affiliated with New York City, Studio 54). In 1985 she left St. Thomas, moving stateside to pursue more opportunities.
Orlando, Florida’s WOKB became her first stop in 1986, where she caught the attention of the legendary Jack “The Rapper” Gibson. Gibson took an interest in her and her career was off and running. WFXA (Foxie 103) in Augusta, GA. was the next stop in late 1986.
In 1991 Lolo moved to Charleston, SC. and accepted the midday position at WDXZ-FM (Foxie 104). Shortly thereafter, she was promoted to Music Director. In 1993 she moved to Baltimore, MD where she has been employed by Radio One Inc., at WWIN-FM (Magic 95.9) for 21 years. Lolo is the veteran announcer at the station.
Lolo is Founder/CEO of Healthy Encores/LifeStyle Festival, an annual festival in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The festival’s focus is on Health Awareness combined with Musical Entertainment.
Some of Lolo’s other accomplishments includes:
Working for the U.S. Virgin Islands Public Television System (WTJX Channel 12) in St. Thomas from 1979-1981, and
Writing the song, “Jesus to Hold” a duet performed by national artist Tony Terry and Nekita Wright.
Passion for Healthy Encores
Lolo’s Story: Diabetes Awareness for Healthy Living Testimonial In her home on February 2, 2005, Lolo lost her father Luther Milliner, Sr. to type2 diabetes. After her dad was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in the late 90’s Lolo watched her father slowly and painfully lose himself to the complications of diabetes. Lolo recalls her handsome, vigorous, soft-spoken father suffering with kidney failure, blindness and eventually, an amputation from a disease that is all too treatable, manageable and preventable.
Consequently, it has become Lolo’s passion to promote healthy living, bring attention to diabetes awareness and find a cure for the deadly disease. “No one should suffer like my dad and everyone needs to be informed about diabetes”.
Healthy Encores healthcare initiative compliment the Lifestyle Festival. While the 2013 Healthy Encores/Lifestyle Festival will spotlight diabetes awareness, management and prevention, other health disparities will be addressed.
Lolo invite you to join her to raise awareness about the complications of diabetes and the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle.
