Music remains an art form thatevokes strong emotions and holdsa special place in many a listener'sheart. The nearly universal appealof music makes it a great gift comethe holiday season, when shoppersmay not always know what to buya loved one. The following are a fewgift ideas that are sure to have yourfavorite music fan singing yourpraises this holiday season.

*Concert tickets: Perhaps nogift makes music fans' hearts racemore than tickets to see their favor-ite musicians perform. Your lovedone probably has a favorite artist orsomeone he or she has long desiredto see live. Look into that perform-er's tour dates to see if they areplaying your area anytime soon.

*Musical instrument: It's nevertoo early or too late to learn howto play a new instrument. Shop-

pers whose loved ones love a goodrock-and-roll riff might nd guitarsmake a great holiday gift, whilethose who can't stop playing airdrums should enjoy nding a realdrum set come the holidays.

*Music lessons: Lessons are thenext logical step once a music fanhas the instruments to work with. But even those without an instru-ment of their own can bene t frommusic lessons.

*Sound system: Advancementsin technology have proven to bemusic to music lovers' ears. Mu-sic fans can now take advantageof crisp sound systems that makemusic that much more enjoyable.Sound systems come in manyshapes and sizes, and they canvary signi cantly in regard to price.

*Streaming service member-ship: Shoppers can buy their fa-

vorite music fans subscriptions tostreaming services, such as Pan-dora or Spotify, and listeners canthen tailor their own stations to in-clude their favorite genres, artistsor individual songs.

Thank you for supporting Wauseon businesses.

Giving eco-friendly gifts is noweasier than ever before. As more andmore people are conscious of reduc-ing their impact on the planet, the de-mand for environmentally consciousproducts and services has grown.

Choosing earth-friendly gifts is notonly generous, but gift-givers also canrest assured theyre doing their partto safeguard natural resources forfuture generations. The following aresome gift ideas for the eco-consciouspeople on your holiday shopping list.

LOCALLY MADE PRODUCTSLocally made products make great

holiday gifts. Such gifts are not pro-duced halfway around the world, meaning they dont contribute togreenhouse gas emissions and globalwarming like products that need tobe own or driven across the globe.Craft fairs and artisan shops are goodsources for locally made gifts, whichalso are a great way to support busi-nesses in your community.

GIFTS OF SERVICEA massage or music or tutoring

sessions are examples of gifts of ser-vice. These gifts do not require muchuse of natural resources and recipi-

ents nd their personal nature verythoughtful. Gifts of service also caninclude tasks you do yourself for thegift recipient, rather than paying an-other person to handle. For example, teach a senior member of your fam-ily how to navigate their new smart-

phone or agree to help them shop forgroceries.

RECYCLED GOODSWhen many people think of recy-

cling, they tend to picture piles of dis-carded plastic bottles, glass jars andaluminum cans. While the end prod-uct of many of these recycled piecesis new cans, bottles and jars, recycledmaterials also can be turned into newand unique pieces. Trivets and spoonrests made from recycled and melt-ed wine bottles make for clever andattractive gifts. Recycled re extin -guishers have been turned into vases, and you can even nd bike parts thathave been used to make wind chimesand belts if you know where to shop.

NATURAL GIFTSNatural gifts are among the most

environmentally friendly ones youcan give. Foodies may appreciate anherb-growing kit that enables them toexperiment with freshly picked basilor thyme in the kitchen, while tree-growing kits and ower seed packetsare nice stocking stuffers for buddinggardeners. Offer to purchase a livingChristmas tree for a relative so thathe or she can plant the evergreen af-

ter the holidays have come and gone.

ANTIQUESNew, shiny gifts are not the only

ones that have appeal. Gifting a sen-timental piece of family history is anearth-friendly way to share the holi-

days. Pass down a cherished pieceof jewelry or, if you do not have any-thing in your own collection, browseantique shops for items that have in-

teresting histories. The holiday season is often a timeof excess, but giving doesnt have tobe detrimental to the environment.Givers can seek out earth-friendlygifts and share even more this timeof year.

Eco-Friendly Gift Ideas For Green Giving

REUSE ... Sentimental or uniqueold gifts make great new gifts and donot require a great deal of naturalresources, making them ideal eco-friendly gifts.

The holiday season is a time to share happy experi-ences with friends and family. But reconnecting withloved ones come the holidays is not always possible, especially when family and friends are spread outacross the country, if not the globe. Even though thesepeople may not be close geographically, theyre stillclose in our hearts and, therefore, still on our holidayshopping lists.

Some issues arise when sending gifts to farawayfriends and family. Distance necessitates shipping giftsor making travel arrangements. To make that processless complicated, consider these suggestions.

Package gifts wisely. When shipping gifts, exercisecaution to ensure the item arrives on time and in onepiece. The holiday season is one of the busiest times ofthe year for the shipping industry and packages mayendure a few bumps along the way. For fragile items, use extra packing peanuts, newspaper or other pro-tective wrapping material. Choose the right size pack-age so the gift does not move around much inside ofthe box. If the gift is expensive, insure the package inthe event it gets lost or damaged. Also, you may wantto spend a little more money to have the shipmenttracked and a con rmation sent when the package isdelivered. This can offer some peace of mind during ahectic time of year.

Take advantage of free shipping offers. Many re -tailers offer discounts on shipping rates during the

holiday season. Shop at retailers that offer such dis-counts, as shipping costs can be exorbitant dependingon the sizes of the packages being sent. In addition, online retailers may allow you to ship the gift directlyto its recipient, which can help you ensure the gift getsto its destination on time.

Give gift cards and certi cates. Gift cards are aneasy item to ship, and can be sent within the regularmail for the cost of a stamp. Certain retailers may havedigital gift cards or certi cates that allow buyers toemail a special code to the gift recipient, who can thenredeem the code for a purchase credit.

Dont forget about inspections and customs pro -cedures. Items shipped out of the country may be de-layed by customs inspectors at their ultimate destina-tion. Assume that certain packages may be opened ordetained, and ship such packages early so the giftsstill arrive on time. Packages that look unusual or liketheyre hiding something may be prone to inspectionmore so than others. Be honest about declarationsof value and what is contained in the package. Also, realize certain items, like fruits, vegetables, plants,or seeds, may be prohibited. Learn the internationalshipping rules for your gifts destination prior to send-ing anything.

Distant family members and friends may be out ofsight but certainly not out of mind come the holidays. When it comes to sending gifts, ship smart.

    the Holidays!

Holiday shoppers tendto fall into three distinctcamps. There are those peo-ple who have completed allof their shopping and wrap-ping even before Novemberends. Others shop in theweeks between Thanksgiv-

ing and Christmas. Final-ly, many people wait untilthe last minute, and suchshoppers are the ones seenrushing from store to storeon December 24.

Waiting until the lastpossible second to pur-chase a gift may not provemuch of a problem whenshopping for birthday gifts. But come the holiday sea-son, such procrastinationmay nd shoppers perus -ing limited inventories anddealing with other franticprocrastinators.

But even those shop-pers who still plan to put

off their holiday shoppingcan make the most of suchstalling this holiday sea-son.

Consider eGift cards. Many retailers offer digi-tal gift cards that can beemailed in a matter of min-utes. Purchase the cardfrom the online retailerand email the redemptioncode to the gift recipient.

Time the email to arrive onChristmas morning or in-clude all of the necessaryinformation in a holidaycard.

Ship to store. Someshoppers like the conve-nience of ship-to-store ser-vices. This enables a personto purchase a gift onlinebut avoid shipping charges

by having the item madeavailable at a store loca-tion. In-stock items are typ-ically ready the day of pur-chase, and this helps youavoid crowds and impulsebuys, as online purchasesare typically available at

special pick-up locations inthe store that allow onlineshoppers to skip long linesat the registers.

Avoid gimmick gifts.Skip the as seen on TVaisle at the store or trendyinfomercial gifts. Such giftsmay suggest to their recipi-

ents that you waited untilthe last minute to buy thegifts and then really didnthave any good ideas.

Shop smaller retail -ers. One way to avoid thehassles that often comewith holiday shopping is to

patronize smaller, indepen-dent shops. Chances arethe crowds will be smallerat these shops and youmay have access to a moreunique selection of giftsthan you would nd at thenearby mall.

Holiday shopping season has hit fullswing, and shoppers everywhere aresearching far and wide for the perfect giftsfor their family and friends. Veteran holi -day shoppers know that no two people ontheir shopping lists are the same, whichcan complicate their quests for the perfectpresents. But a careful consideration of

Thanks to sales featuring heavilydiscounted items, millions of peoplewait to start their holiday shoppinguntil the season hits full swing. Butin spite of such bargains, overex-tending budgets during the holidayseason is too tempting for manyshoppers to resist. However, shop-pers need not risk nancial peril ifthey shop smartly and heed somedos and don'ts of holiday shopping.

*Do set a budget. Establish what you can afford to spend on gifts andother seasonal trimmings early on.

The National Retail Federation es-timates that the average consumerwill spend around $700 come theholiday season. But not every per-son needs to be a big spender. The"buy now, pay later" mentality thatcredit cards offer lands many shop-pers in trouble, a sticky situation

many only notice once the rst billcomes due. If you cannot affordto pay your entire credit card bal-ance off once the bill arrives, youface steep interest charges that canquickly add up. Instead, pick a setspending limit and keep to it nomatter how tempting it may seem tooverspend with a credit card.

*Don't be fooled by false sales.Retailers understand that a good

advertised deal lures shoppers intotheir stores. As a result, some re-tailers mark up the cost of certainitems in order to slash the prices fo rholiday sales. Even if you are sav-ing the assumed 50 to 60 percent, the nal cost of the item still maybe higher than normal. Comparisonshop and do your research so youdon't fall victim to clever pricing.

*Do schedule time for shopping.Hectic schedules sometimes resultin last-minute shopping that leadsto impulse purchases. Schedulesome distraction-free time for yourholiday shopping so you're lesslikely to rush into purchases beforethinking them through.

*Don't double buy. Some shop-pers use the holidays as an excuseto buy more for themselves thanthe people on their lists. While it's

tempting to treat yourself come theholiday season, this is a great andquick way to deplete your budget. If you plan on using holiday dealsto supplement your own wardrobeor household needs, reduce yourspending the rest of the year andsave money for year-end purchases.

*Do collect coupons and look forpurchasing incentives. Comparisonshopping not only helps you get the

best price, but also it can shed lighton coupons, shipping discounts andother incentives that lower the over-all cost of products. Search onlinefor Web sites that publish couponsand codes for online discounts, in-cluding free shipping. Join a store'smarketing list and receive emailswith deals sent directly to your inbox.

*Don't be afraid to delay somepurchases if need be. If hosting apost-holiday gathering where giftswill be exchanged, it's perfectly ac-ceptable to delay buying those giftsuntil after Christmas or Chanukah, when many items can be found ateven lower prices. Many stores re-duce prices on merchandise comeDecember 26, so you can wait untilafter the holidays to shop for itemsthat will be exchanged with distantfriends and relatives. This enables

you to save more money and use anyreceived gift cards toward shopping.*Do keep a level head. Some peo-

ple forget the true meaning of theseason is spending time with lovedones. Getting swept away by shop-ping and worrying about deadlinescan make the season less enjoyable.Don't allow the stress of holidayshopping to compromise an other-wise joyous time of year.

25%OFFWith so much on our plates between Thanksgiving and

New Years Day, the holiday season can be hectic. Fortu-nately, there are many ways to save time and make theholiday season more manageable.

If you dont have plastic clips to hang lights aroundwindows and to the eaves of your home, inexpensiveclothespins will work just as well. If youre concernedabout the color of the wooden clips, paint them holidayhues before stringing the lights.

Put a bath mat, rug-side down and rubber-side up,beneath your Christmas tree stand. This allows you tospin the tree as you hang lights and ornaments withoutdamaging the oor underneath. It also makes it simple toundress the tree once the season is over. Use a tree skirtto hide the mat.

Squeeze arti cial tree portions into concrete formtubes. First wrap the tree portions in twine and then slipthem into the concrete sleeves. Each tube can be stowedin attic or garage rafters, freeing up precious space.

Store one or two strings of lights in a plastic shop -ping bag to keep the strands from getting tangled. Hangthe bags from a hook in a garage or stack them in a stor-age bin.

Use plastic zip ties to attach garland and lights tobannisters.

A paper towel holder can be screwed to the wall in acraft room to neatly hold spools of ribbon.

Mount a tree stand to a piece of wood with screwsor glue. This prevents spills from reaching the oor whilestabilizing the tree.

Old maps make interesting gift wrap and are a nicechange of pace from commercially produced paper ornewsprint.

Wrap duct tape or another type of sticky tape around your hand or oor sweeper. Pat over fallen pine needlesthat accumulate around the tree.

When traveling for the holidays, use a brightly col -ored suitcase or ashy tape to make your suitcase standout from others at the airport.

Place hardened brown sugar in a baking dish, coverit with a moist paper towel and either microwave it onhigh for 20-second intervals or place it in a 300 F oven for

ve minutes. This will soften the sugar, making it easierto use the sugar to prepare your favorite holiday cookierecipes.

Save plastic bread ties, which can be used to maketags for the wires on certain devices. Such ties also can beused to organize decorating components and to keep yourplace on a roll of tape.

Measure the inside of your picture window and con -struct a wooden frame to its dimensions. Staple holidaylights to the frame and then easily slip the frame in andout of place each year.

Hang a live wreath or some boughs of evergreen in your home to give it that fresh pine scent if you have anarti cial tree.

Color-code storage containers so you can easily ndholiday decorations in the attic or basement.

Pack for a holiday excursion using a collapsible cloth -ing storage hanger for closets. Fold clothes on each fabricshelf and then collapse it into your suitcase. When you getto your destination, unfold and hang it in a closet so all of

your clothes will be at the ready.

Many parents fondly re-call their rst holiday sea -son as a mom and dad. While youngsters may notremember much abouttheir rst Thanksgivingdinner with family or wheretheir rst Christmas pres -ent was placed under the

tree, parents tend to cher-ish such memories, mak -ing their rst holidays withchildren in tow very memo -rable.

Loved ones of new par -ents can take steps to makethis holiday season evenmore special. The follow -

ing are some gift ideas forholiday shoppers who wantto make this season evenmore memorable for theproud new parents in theirlives.

Photo album: Todaysnew parents have morepictures and video of theirbundles of joy than any pre-

vious generation of momsand dads, as smartphones, tablets and other deviceshave made taking picturesmuch easier than in yearspast. But family membersalso have more access tosuch photos than ever be -fore, making it easy to puttogether a special photoalbum of the new parentsand their new child. Pullpictures from the parentssocial media accounts ormake an album of the nu -merous photos you have nodoubt received since yourloved ones became parents.Parents likely dont havetime to make such albums,

so your efforts will almostcertainly be appreciated.

Camcorder: Manysmartphones are capable oftaking video, but such de -vices are not ideal for shoot -ing longer home videos newparents will want to watchfor years to come. An HD

camcorder with suf cientinternal ash memory canallow new parents to takelonger, higher quality vid -eos with superior audioto those that are shot onsmartphones. Such a cam-corder may be costly forthose shopping on a strictbudget, but its a gift new

parents are sure to love andutilize for years to come. Nursery sound sys -

tem: New moms and dadsare no doubt anxiously an-ticipating the day when thenewest additions to theirhouseholds sleep throughthe night. Help speed upthe arrival of that gloriousnight with a nursery soundsystem that provides sooth -ing sounds to create a per-fect sleeping environmentfor newly born boys andgirls. The results may notarrive overnight, but par -ents may soon nd theirlovable youngster is spend -ing more of the wee hours

of the morning sleeping andless time waking up momand dad.

Spa treatment: Not ev -ery gift you buy for the newparents in your life needsto focus on helping themcherish their rst holidayseason as parents. Newparents tend to experiencelots of exhaustion in their

rst few months on the job,but a spa treatment can be

just the relaxing break theyneed from catering to theirbundle of joys every need.Moms may prefer the fullspa treatment, while dadsmay simply want a massageand some relaxing time inthe steam room. Book atreatment for both momand dad so they can spendsome time relaxing duringthis hectic time of year.

The best holiday gifts areoften those that encouragetheir recipients to pursuea passion or favorite hob -by. Tickets to a ball gamemight be right up a sportsfans alley while the familyglobetrotter would no doubtlove a contribution to his orher travel fund.

When gifting the fam-ily foodie, that one person

who loves to cook or simplycant get enough of his orher favorite cuisines, shop -pers have a host of optionsat their disposal to ensurethis holiday season brings asmile to their favorite food -ies face.

Spice rack: Few homecooks can get by without avast selection of spices, so aspice rack that includes allthe essential spices makesperfect sense for the familyfoodie.

Cooking lessons: Cook -ing lessons can be a greatway for men, women andeven children to cultivatetheir love for food. If yourfriend or family memberprefers a speci c type ofcuisine, then nd him orher cooking lessons where

he or she can learn how toprepare and not just eatsome favorite dishes. Cook -ing lessons also make agreat opportunity to bondwith a loved one. If you, too, want to expand your cook -ing horizons, buy your ownlessons and go with yourfriend or family member.

A night out: If your fa -vorite foodie prefers his orher meals made by some-one else, treat that friendor family member to a night

out at his or her favoriterestaurant. You can give agift card to the restaurantor take this special some -one out yourself and enjoya great meal and great com-pany to boot.

Serving dishes: Manyfoodies not only love to eatbut also love to serve up

their favorite foods to familyand friends. If your friend orfamily member has playedhost to guests many timesin the past, surprise him or

    her with some new servingdishes.

Wine rack: A greatbottle of wine completesa great meal, so why notbuy your family foodie aplace to store all of his orher bottles of wine? Wineracks can range from thesimple, inexpensive stand-up models to more com-plex or expensive models

that need to be installed. If the eventual recipient of

your thoughtful gift rentsrather than owns his or herhome, avoid buying a winerack that needs to be in -stalled, as that might causedamage that will cost themsome money when the timecomes to move out. But if

your friend or family mem-ber owns their home, thenlook for a wine rack that tsin with their established d-cor. You even can christenthe new wine rack by sup -plementing your gift with afew bottles.

With so many potentialgifts to choose from, shop-pers often nd foodies arefun to shop for come theholiday season.
