BY SCOTT THOMAS ANDERSONGOLD COUNTRY NEWS SERVICE

In the history of Greek love stories, Des-tiny itself can conjure mighty twists andturns. Id read enough of the Old World

myths to know this, so when I secretlyplanned to ask my girlfriend to marry meduring a trip through the Mediterranean, Iwas trying hard to make sure that the Fatesand Furies didnt cause the plan go awry.

I had actually given the proposal quite abit of thought before we left. I knew wedbe venturing through Greece, Italy andCroatia, and any of these countries mighthold the ideal place for the moment. Asour plane took off over the Atlantic Ocean,I came to a silent decision that I was notgoing to pop the question in Venice. Ofcourse, Venice is arguably the mostromantic city in the world; but it was thatvery reason that gave me hesitation. I wassure that over the years a lot of Americanand British girls had been proposed to inVenice. If we were wealthy, it would almostbe too predictable.

Photographs of Croatias medievalrooftops set on rocky sweeping shorelines

convinced me it would have its ownamorous spell. I later found out that Croa-tia does have a stirring mystique; but asour jetliner rocked in the nighttime turbu-lence I was doubtful about it as a proposalspot. Right or wrong, did I really want mygirlfriend telling people Id ask her to mar-ry me in a country Americans still associ-ate with NATO air strikes and PrincessDiana walking through mine fields?

Before our plane touched down in thePeloponnese, Id made up my mind that Iwas proposing somewhere in Greece. After all, my girlfriend loves epic Greek

poetry. Shed even named her daughterCassandra after the tragic seer in HomersThe Iliad. But just because Id made adecision didnt mean proposing was goingto be as easy as, say, the Greek myth ofAcontius and Cydippe. In that timelesstale the clever would-be Romeo, Acontius, tricks the beautiful Cydippe into marryinghim by tossing her an enchanted coin. When Cydippe innocently picks the coinup and reads its inscription out loud Iswear by the temple of Artemis that I shallmarry Acontius she is instantly obli-

gated to through with the union, whethershe wants to or not. Barring the possibilitythat Id stumble on one of Acontius coins,I knew I was going to have to try a little

harder than that.Ah, bustling Athens. This was my first

option for a proposal site. Athens is anincredible place. It feels like the very heartof Antiquity itself. However, it also feelslike one of the poorest cities in WesternEurope: The reveling nightlife is beyondvibrant, but the daytime ambiance ofancient temples and wild olive trees issoftened by spates of ugly graffiti, Romaschemers on the corners and refugee hus-tlers lining the port. Athens is crazy andCosmopolitan but, for me, not quite

    romantic enough.In Delphi I saw a jagged, sun-drench

landscape that was enchanting my gifriend: She loves mountains and rucountryside, and Delphi brings botogether in an ominous and broken kindmajesty. I thought I might have found tperfect place. The only problem was it wextremely hot out. Making matters wormy girlfriend had access to all of our hosafes, which meant I had to carry a bacpack on me at all times so her engagemering would be safe. Since obvious questio

would be raised by my toting around apparently empty backpack, I had to fill tpack with travel books and novels I insistI needed at all times. The ruse workbecause Im such a book nerd; but tproblem was I was now climbing up tsteep, flinty ridges of Mount Parnassus wa heavy backpack anchored to me. By ttime we reached the perfect view of trolling olive orchards below I was dizzy adrenched in sweat. This was not a gomoment to pull out the ring. When we gback to the mountain-bound dining decin rustic town of Delphi, I was so deplet

from the heat that the first glass of red wiput my head nodding.Delphi was a great place to be in b

it was not working out for the proposalI decided I would stop trying to pl

everything and just wait for a momethat felt right.

Two nights later, we found ourselves the Greek island of Hydra. Meditative, scnic and serene, the island has no autombiles. Its only modes of transportation asmall boats and restless donkeys. We weout to dinner that night at TaverGitoniko, enjoying wine on its rooftop t

race laced in hanging vines. I thought mgirlfriend looked like a movie star frombygone era in her stunning black cocktdress. After dinner, we were strolling alothe islands tiny port, basked in candlight from seas-side bars and cafes as

watched ship sails teetering in the breeI stopped her, got down on my knee ashowed her a ring. I asked her to marme.

I didnt have Acontius magic coin; bthe moment still felt like it was on the rigside of Destiny.

these questions, while thehobbyist (whos calling himselfor herself professionalbecause theyre charging you),may try to sidestep the ques-tions or avoid them altogether.Ask friends and family forreferrals, and begin yourphone interviews. If you likewhat you hear, set up the

appointment as quickly aspossible; youd hate for themto get booked before you havea chance to meet them.

Do you hold a current busi-ness license, and a sellers per-mit from the State Board ofEqualization (BOE)?

Its against the law to con-duct business without alicense, as well as not hold asellers permit from the BOE. If

a photographer isnt chargingyou tax, you can assume theydont carry the permit. If theyget shut down for operatingillegally (which has hap-

pened), youve just lost what-ever money you gave them.Additionally, youre not pro-tected if theyre not licensed(its like hiring an unlicensedcontractor do so at yourown risk.

When did you become a pho-tographer, and what photogra-phy education do you have?

Experience is key! Having afoundation in the technical

side of photography, i.e. expo-sure compensation, lightingratios, depth of field, etc., iscrucial for your photographerto know. No photographer

should rely on the automatedsettings of their camera. If theydont know how to use thecamera in manual mode, dontlet your wedding be the one at

which they have to learn. If theperson youve hired is anautomated photographer, I

would hate to see what hap-pens if theyre forced to usetheir manual mode because ofa camera malfunction. Irecently encountered a newer

photographer who copletely relied on automacamera settings. When I askabout why almost every imathey took was photograph

with the same setting (atwide aperture), the reply wThats what someone told mI should do. The resultiimages were exposed impro

Exposure compensation, lighting ratios, and depth offield are just some technicalities of photography thatshould be done right to ensure you get the best photographs. If your photographer doesnt have experiencewith these principles, it might be time to start looking

    for a new one.

If they don't know how to use the camera in

manual mode, dont let your wedding be the one

at which they have to learn.

have E&O coverage in addition to liability.E&O coverage will protect you againstnegligence in the care of your images (i.e.,the photographer loses a memory card),or if they dont show up to your wedding.

How do you protect my images whilephotographing, as well as when you getback to your computer?

Just burning your images to multiplediscs is not good enough. Images should

be backed up to an online server within 48hours of the wedding to ensure completesafety. Wedding photographers shouldalways use cameras that contain dualmemory cards, which allow images imme-diately to be backed up to a second mem-ory card. If a memory card should go bad, which happens when a card gets corrupt-ed (and theres no way to know when onecan go bad), the second card has theimages protected. When a card goes bad,it is often unreadable. Can you imagine acard going bad just as youre getting readyto cut the cake, and the whole day of pho-tography has been lost?

How many cameras do you bring to thewedding, and do you own the backupequipment or will you be renting it?

All photographers should have at leasttwo cameras, multiple lenses and flashes. They should not be renting a camera foryour wedding, because there is a learningcurve with cameras.

How many weddings have you pho-tographed?

Photographing weddings is vastly differ-ent than portraiture or commercial pho-tography. Among things that are part oftheir work day, a photographer must dealwith lighting that is consistently changing, strict time management, posing largegroups of people, working with varyingpersonalities and sometimes working indifficult weather conditions.

I want beautiful photographs, and I alsowant to enjoy my wedding. What are yourtime management skills?

Weve all been to weddings where the

couple takes an hour and a half before theyget into the reception because the photog-rapher has no idea how to maintain aschedule. My philosophy is that my clientsare there to spend the day with theirfriends and family, all of which I need tophotograph. The day is not about havingfriends and family watch me take the brideand groom on a six-hour photo session.

Why is wedding photography expensive? For every hour I spend at a wedding, I

probably spend another five hours in post-production. An eight-hour wedding willmean I spend approximately 40 hours inediting, retouching and album creation.

Additionally, a professional will carry closeto $20,000 in equipment, hold liabilityinsurance, maintenance, education, etc.No new photographer should be charging

what an experienced photographercharges. Just like with any job, when you

start out in the field, your pay reflects that.

I think Ill just have a friend take my pho-tos.

I recently photographed a weddingwhere the mom was involved in selectingthe photographer. When she got married30-plus years ago, they had a friend photo-graph their wedding. Yes, you guessed it their photos are nothing more than ahandful of faded snapshots. Sadly, this is astory that I hear all too often. This mother

knew she didnt want to make the sammistake with her daughters wedding thshe did with hers, incorrectly thinkinTheyre just photos; anyone can tathem. She learned the hard way thanot true.

After all your research and narrowindown to a couple of photographers, herone final tip. Select a photographer you it off with! The consultation is a gre

barometer for how you get along, and hmuch fun you can all have together. If tconsultation is full of laughter, feelicomfortable enough to reveal some detaabout your courtship, engagement, even family situations, then you may ha

just found the person who will capture timages that will someday become yofamilys heirlooms. Someday, your grgrandchildren will be happy you hiredprofessional photographer, because yophotos will stand the test of time.

Wedding photography may be expensive, but if the photographer puts inenough time and effort you wont be disappointed by the result.

Its never too soon to beginThe minute you get engaged is the time

to start your plans and maybe even beforeif your wedding is your ongoing fantasy.Betsy Arbogast, Auburn resident whoplanned her own wedding and has helpedwith others, suggests that the first thing onthe list has to be a budget.

Its amazing how those little details addup, Arbogast said. Be sure of your budgetand stick to it.

Another handy hint is that instead ofsetting a date and seeking a wedding ven-ue, contact and interview venues and thenset the date around whats available. If youchoose an off day, like Friday afternoon, consider asking for a discount. Also makesure that if you are using a rented venuethey will not then require you to use theircatering, flower, and cake services.

Venues are all over the mapBefore you choose you own backyard, or

a park, consider what extras might beneeded and what they would cost. Tables, chairs, and kitchen might be on yourmust haves list. For instance the Apple-gate Civic Center charges a modest feethat includes the above plus a piano, rea-sonable rental for linens, and ample park-ing.

Catered, barbecues, potlucks, sit-downs, buffets weve had them all andmore, said rental agent Barbara Morris.

Google wedding venues in your chosenarea and youll find more than you mighthave expected. Ask a lot of questions andremember, even a park might charge a feeand require a reservation and insurancepolicy. Do the research so you dont getany surprises.

A little help from your friendsVenue decided, the remaining budget

needs to be divvied upon everything else. The trick here is to decide the most impor-tant item to you and your groom. (Yes.There really is a groom!) Photos? Dress?

Friends and family come up hugewhen planning your big day

When looking for someone to talk toabout Do-It-Yourself weddings, wedidnt have to leave the office. Brit-

tany Jolley, who works at the Placer Heraldin Rocklin, has planned a couple of wed-dings for friends and even hosted one ather home in Meadow Vista. Shes offeredsome tips and insights from her first-handexperiences.

My sister in lawgot married at myhouse last year itwas beautiful and alldone without a pro-fessional weddingcoordinator, shesaid.

Heres a rundownof how they wentabout putting

    together the Octoberwedding.

Photographer: RonHufford is a relativeof the groom, not aprofessional photog-rapher but he had aprofessional camerawhich he knew howto use.

Official: We foundKen Burk by going to

Google and search-ing for a local one.

Cake:We got the cupcakes at Sams Clubin Roseville. Originally we thought wecould do them ourselves, but then wewondered where we would put 90-pluscupcakes for a day. We ordered the cakefrom Alyxandras Cakes in Auburn and shedid a very beautiful job on it.

    You donthave to do it

    all yourself

Hair: Maria (the bride) did her own hair

and makeup as well as hair and make upfor Wilma Alvarez, her Maid of Honor.Maria does hair and make up for specialevents and weddings.

We spent about $2,500-$3,000 for theentire wedding and there were about 100

people that attended, Jolley said. Eventhough we wanted to do many of the

things ourselves such as the cupcakes, when you have a DIY wedding you have toallow some things to just be ordered or tak-en care of by family members, etc., or else

you set yourself up to be very over-whelmed.
