THIS WEEK - The University of Hawai‘i Rainbow Warrior baseball team resumes Big West Conference play this week, host-ing Long Beach State for three games at Les Murakami Stadium. The ‘Bows and Dirtbags will play Friday, May 9 (6:35 p.m.), Saturday, May 10 (6:35 p.m.), and Sunday, May 11 (1:05 p.m.). The Rainbow Warriors are coming off a series sweep of the New York Institute of Technology. The ‘Bows shut out the Bears in the first three games, the first time a UH team had three straight shutouts since 1991. Matt Cooper tossed five scoreless innings in the opener to extend his scoreless innings streak to 14. In Saturday’s nightcap, Scott Kuzminsky struck out a career-high 14 batters en route to his complete-game shutout. Three players lifted their batting averages north of .300 after the weekend. Adam Hurley is hitting .316 after an 8-14 weekend that included two three-hit performances to go along with three runs, three RBI and three doubles. Marc Flores (.300) belted his team-leading fifth homerun of the season in UH’s 17-0 game one win and Kaeo Aliviado upped his average to .304 after a pair of three-hit performances over the weekend.

Facing the Dirtbags - Long Beach State holds a 7-3 advantage over the ‘Bows in their all-time series. The two teams played last season for the first time as conference foes with the Dirtbags winning two of three games in Long Beach. Marc Flores had a monster series, batting .455 (5-11) with three doubles.

Teaming Up - The UH starting rotation has combined to be one of the most formidable in the nation. This weekend’s rotation of Matt Cooper, Jarrett Arakawa, and Scott Kuzminsky is tied for 9th nationally with a combined 2.17 ERA (minimum 7 starts). Even if you add in Scott Squier, who has started in every Big West series up to this point, the staff ’s ERA is still a stingy 2.40.

Career Day - Scott Kuzminsky unleashed a career-high 14 strikeouts in UH’s 11-0 win over NYIT on Saturday. It was the most strikeouts of any Mike Trapasso coached pitcher at UH. He scattered seven hits in posting his second complete-game shutout of the season.

In Rare Form - Matt Cooper extended his scoreless innings streak to 14 with his five innings of work this past Friday night. In what was his shortest outing of the season in terms of pitch count, and tied for shortest in innings, he equaled his career-high of 11 strikeouts set just one week earlier. Cooper also leads the Big West in strikeouts.

First Time For Everything - Scott Squier has had some impressive outings over his near three-year career, but last week he threw his first complete-game shutout in a 1-0 win over NYIT. It was his first scoreless outing of the season and sixth scoreless start of his career.

Doing the Work - Quintin Torres-Costa is slowly working himself back into shape after Tommy John surgery a little under a year ago. Last week he had his longest outing of the season in which he gave up a pair of hits and posted four strikeouts over four and one-third scoreless innings.

Going With the Flo - Marc Flores belted his team-best fifth homerun of the season, more than the ‘Bows hit as a team for the entire 2013 season.

Here Today, Gone Tomorrow - Kalei Hanawahine awoke from his slumber in the opener of the NYIT series, recording a career-high four hits (4-5) including a dou-ble, two runs, and two RBI. Hanawahine

started two more games in the series but went hitless (0-8).

Coming Through The Gates - Hawai‘i currently ranks 16th nationally and first in the west region in attendance. The ‘Bows have an average attendance of 3,147 over 27 home contests. LSU is tops in the nation with an average attendance figure of 10,794.

New and Improved - Les Murakami Stadium replaced its current score-board to much critical acclaim with a new state-of-the-art Daktronics video board out in right centerfield. The active area will be comparable to the size of the current board.

‘Bows Picked 6th - The Big West Conference announced its baseball preseason order of finish with the University of Hawai‘i picked to fin-ish in sixth place for the second straight season. The poll was voted on by the nine conference coaches. Cal State Fullerton was picked to win its fifth straight title, garnering all but one first-place vote. UC Irvine received one first-place vote in finishing fourth. Hawai‘i, who begins its second season in the league, received 33 votes, six ahead of UC Riverside.
