Christie’s concluded its 2012 Old Masters season with a global total of XGBP/USD, solidifying our leadership in the market and demonstrating the strength and demand for this category from an increasingly diverse global audience. We were delighted to see the momentum continue in New York in January 2013 with Old Masters Week, an exciting series of sales that set several new benchmarks for our field, as you will read in the Market Barometer report below. One of the many high points of the week was the specially curated Renaissance auction which was such a success that we are already planning to stage a second sale of this kind in January 2014.
Beyond the world of auction, our specialists remain ever-engaged with the art world at large, finding opportunities to indulge their artistic passion through travel, literature, and visits to cultural institutions around the globe. In this issue of the newsletter, our Amsterdam specialist Sophie Bremers shares an insider’s look at some of the many cultural events taking place in the Dutch capital in 2013. Overseas, Emma Kronman, our newest team member in New York, tells us how her love of Old Masters first began, and what Renaissance read she currently can’t put down.
We thank you for your interest in Old Masters and hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you to Christie’s in the months ahead.

Spotlight: AmsterdamBy Sophie Bremers, Associate Specialist, Amsterdam
Home to world-class art collections and vestiges of the Golden Age at every turn, Amsterdam has long been a destination for Old Masters enthusiasts looking to explore the city once inhabited by Rembrandt, Ferdinand Bol, and Govert Flinck. On the heels of Christie’s Amsterdam’s 40th anniversary in November 2012, we asked specialist Sophie Bremers to tell us about a few of the not-to-be-missed celebrations taking place in the Dutch capital in the months ahead.

As the newest member of the Old Masters team in New York, Emma Kronman brings to her role a wealth of professional experience (she has worked at the Metropolitan and Guggenheim Museums), academic expertise (she holds degrees from the Courtauld Institute of Art and Yale University) and a passion for the object that is truly contagious.
Throughout the past four months, our sales have demonstrated the enduring strength and demand for Old Master works of the highest quality. But an interesting trend is taking shape in this “masterpiece market”…

The Renaissance RebornBy Ann Guité, Head of Old Master Paintings, New York and Emma Kronman, Junior Specialist, New York
The Renaissance has captured our cultural imagination, riveting 21st century society just as it did the Popes, Dukes, Kings, politicians, writers, and artists of centuries past. We take a closer look at the modern fascination
with this captivating moment in history.
