May 2014

My Dear Franciscan Friends,

Alleluia, Alleluia, Christ is risen! The Lord is risen indeed, alleluia,

alleluia!

One of the joys of being an Episcopalian is that we have not just

one day to celebrate Easter, but rather a whole season. During this

season of joy, let us pray that that God would bring new life into our

daily lives: at breakfast, during our work, and at night as we rest.

May God bring new life to our eyes that we may see you walking

beside us and new life to our fingers that we may touch the signs of

your life among us.

With these thoughts and prayers in mind, I share with a poem written by an Anglican priest

George Herbert who lived at the turn of the 17th century.

The Dawning

Awake, sad heart, whom sorrow ever drowns ;

Take up thine eyes, which feed on earth ;

Unfold thy forehead, gathered into frowns ;

Thy Saviour comes, and with Him mirth :

Awake, awake,

And with a thankful heart His comforts take.

But thou dost still lament, and pine, and cry,

And feel His death, but not His victory.

Arise, sad heart ; if thou dost not withstand,

Christ's resurrection thine may be ;

Do not by hanging down break from the hand

Which, as it riseth, raiseth thee :

Arise, Arise;

And with His burial linen drie thine eyes.

Christ left His grave-clothes, that we might, when grief

Draws tears or blood, not want a handkerchief.

May God bless you during this Eastertide!

Youth Sunday will be May 18th! If you have a senior

graduating from high school or college, we would love to

acknowledge their accomplishments during the Worship

Service. Please contact Amanda at

[email protected] with their name, where

they are graduating from, and a brief description of their

future plans.

This year we will have TWO Mission Trips: one for Middle Schoolers,

and one for High Schoolers.

The Middle School Mission Trip will be June 18th-21st. This trip will

focus on the needs of our local community, and is open to rising 6th-

rising 8th graders. We will stay at St. Mike's and shower at the YMCA.

chaperones, please contact Amanda at [email protected]

to sign up for the trip as a student or as a chaperone.

Our High School Mission Trip will be June 29-July 5th! This trip will be

in partnership with the High School students at St. Paul's Episcopal Church

in Winston-Salem, NC. This trip is open to all rising 9th graders-graduated seniors. We will be

going to Glory Ridge, NC and working to repair and rebuild homes for those in need. **We espe-

The 2014 Easter Egg Hunt was a great success! Over 300 eggs were hidden, and over 40 children

participated! This was a wonderful Easter celebration for the children of St. Francis. Happy Easter!

This year's Confirmation class has also decided on a wonderful project to help our local commu-

nity: collecting hygiene items for the homeless. From now until May 18th, we will be collecting

various hygiene items, particularly toothbrushes and toothpaste, deodorant, and travel size soaps

and shampoos. Please bring these items to the church office throughout the week, or place them

in the box in the Narthex. All of these items will be donated to those served at the Interactive

Resource Center, which provides several services for the homeless in our community.

Confirmation Service Project

All Franciscans are invited to attend the regional Confirmation Service, which

will include our Confirmands as well as those from other churches, on Wednes-

day evening, May 14th. The service will be at the Canterbury School in the Phil-

lips Chapel at 6:30pm, with a light reception to follow. It would be wonderful to

have many parishioners come to support our Confirmands!

Additionally, if anyone from St. Francis would like to participate in the service

by being an acolyte, please let either Amanda ([email protected])

or Robert ([email protected]) know.

The following is a brief summary of the first quarter 2014 financial reports for St. Francis Episco-

pal Church:

First Quarter First Quarter YTD YTD YTD

ACTUAL BUDGET ACTUAL BUDGET VARIANCE

Revenues $138.465 $137,795 $138,465 $137,795 $ 415

Expenses 159,100 162,133 159,100 162,133 3,032

Net Margin ($20,635) ($24,338) ($20,635) ($24,338) $3,702

The operating fund’s first quarter of 2014 finds the Church in a very good place. Our revenues

were slightly above our first quarter budget and expenses were $3,000 below budget. Current year

pledges were right on target through the first quarter. Our first quarter net margin was negative

but it was below the first quarter budget by $3,700. The only unusual expense item that we experi-

enced was utilities, given the rather harsh weather we have had this year. We spent about $3,100

on additional capital items in the first quarter and on an ongoing basis we have totally spent

$143,500 on Capital. We also have about $49,300 in capital funding against this expense, yielding

a net of outstanding amount of $94,200. We continue to finance this amount internally through

cash management.

Through the 9th month of the school year the Day School financial report showed a net margin of

a negative ($2,500). This is a real improvement from the last quarter. The revenues were $133,400

and the expenses were $135,900. We hope this small negative position will be overcome during

the next 3 months of the school year. Currently, the school has 64 students, but the annual budget

was built on an assumption of 72 students, which is the core reason for the shortfall in revenue.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns ([email protected].)

We are looking for four parishioners to join three Vestry members to decide the

next Vestry class for the upcoming three years. Please contact Claudia Reich

([email protected]), Jim Cox ([email protected]), or Brian MacKenzie

([email protected]) if you are interested in serving in this ministry.

Vestry Highlights for April 2014

Outreach funds were approved in the amount of $3,000 for The Interactive Resource Cen-

ter which is an organization which focuses on helping the homeless in our community and

also $2,500 for The Adult Center for Enrichment to assist with their Adult Day Care.

Book Sale - the St. Francis Book Sale funds the entire Outreach budget for our church.

The major work starts this Saturday, May 3rd, as ALL of the books need to be moved from

the garage to the Parish Hall. This can be an easy job if we have about 50 volunteers. As

of right now, we only have six, which will not be enough to get the job done. Please take

some time to help out on Saturday as the success of the Book Sale depends on it!

Tennis Social will be on May 10th at Pinetop Tennis Club.

There will be a presentation during the 10:00 service on June 1st regarding the completion

of the Discernment Phase for the Proposed Capital Campaign. A Parish Hot Dog Lunch

will take place following the service and Leadership Ambassadors will be available to an-

swer questions.

We had 75 Parishioners sign up to participate in the Pledge to Pray Campaign.

Quench your thirst for Fellowship – Starting April 27th

we will revive the coffee social after the 10:30am service in

the Parish Hall. Take advantage of this opportunity to grab

a cup of java and chat with old and new church friends. In

June we will move this event out into the Courtyard begin-

ning our summer of Lemonade on the Lawn.

Spring Tennis Social - Dust off your tennis rackets and

mark your calendars! May 10th starting at 7pm will be

the Second Annual St. Francis Tennis Social, held at the

Pinetop Tennis Club. Players of all abilities and specta-

tors are all welcome, and both St. Francis members and

non-members may participate. The event will be set up as

a round robin, with prizes awarded in several categories.

The cost will be $20 to play, which includes all court fees

as well as heavy appetizers. Assorted alcohol and non-

alcohol beverages will be available for sale; no outside

alcohol is permitted on the grounds. All proceeds from

the event will go towards Urban Ministry. Registration

is required to play. Please send an e-mail to jmes-

[email protected] to register. Checks sent to the office or handed in after the service will con-

firm your spot(s), with the reference "2014 Tennis Social" in the memo field.

All Parish Luncheon – We will kick off the summer June 1st

with a parish wide hotdog lunch in the courtyard following the

10am service.

The Interactive Resource Center has made a presentation to the Outreach Committee describing

their history, their services, and their mission to the homeless in our community. At last count,

there are more than 1,000 homeless in Guilford County along with 2,700 children. 143 of those are

“chronically homeless”, leading to the community spending $109,000 for 75 days on these folks

who end up in jail, shelters, ER visits, etc. IRC provides day care services, such as laundry, show-

ers, obtaining ID’s, bus passes, telephone services, some basic medical needs, disability claims,

assisting with GED’s, to mention a few. They collaborate with other non-profits for referrals and

to avoid duplicate services. Outreach has determined this is an organization we need to support

and stay connected with, as they provide a much needed service to those homeless in our commu-

nity.

http://gsodaycenter.org/

We continue to support the Adult Center for Enrichment, which provides adult day care for seniors

in our community. Many patrons are able to pay for this service, but just as many are not, and it is

a valuable service which allows more seniors to remain in their homes longer. http://

www.acecare.org/

We’ve also become interested in Malachi House 2, which is a non-profit 9-month residential faith-

based recovery program for men, which is seeing remarkable success. Learn more at http://

www.malachihouse2.org/

We thank the congregation for their support during Lent for “Change-ing Lives”, for the volun-

teers who assisted us with the Greensboro Urban Ministry Food Drive, and for those in addition to

the EYC for the 50 comfort backpacks assembled for troubled teens. All these organizations are

most grateful to have St. Francis as a caring partner.

As our annual Book Sale approaches, we will all be coming together with our time and talent to

make it a success once again this year in order to continue providing these much needed services

to our brothers and sisters in need in our community.

The Chrismon Construction Company has received a letter and pictures

from St. Clements Anglican Church, Poole, England, thanking us for

the Chrismons we sent them last Christmas for their small Chrismon

Tree.

We will be walking again this year under the name Jane Stubbs and

Friends of St. Francis. The walk will be held on Saturday, May 17th.

11:00am to 11:00pm at Proehlific Park, 4517 Jessup Grove Road. Our

team is on ACS website: www.relayforlife.org/greensboronc

I would love for you to sign up as a team member and raise money or

ask that you make a donation or purchase luminaries in honor or mem-

ory of a family member or friend. You are welcome to do this online or

mail check payable to ACS/Relay For Life to me. You can get 3 lumi-

naries for $25 or 1 for $10. Thank you in advance for supporting this

great cause as we continue to make a difference in the fight against cancer. I am a 13 year Survi-

vor and we have many church members who are also survivors and several who lost the fight.
