I t’s all about nuance and beauty... Just how do we know it’s Spring in this part of the world? A
brief shimmering from the sun? The sounds of birds? Unremarkable buds appearing on local crab trees and the sheer might of a crocus flower emerging from it’s winter slumber?
Spring in Bend can be enigmatic and fleeting. For sure, it is a season of subtleties. And, it is with
deep respect to this awakening of beauty, that we welcome this, the most elusive of our Central Oregon seasons, into the fold. Welcome Spring! Welcome!

Bend Spring Festival, presented by The Source Weekly and Whole Foods Market. This year, the Peak 104.1 mainstage will kick off on Friday Night, April 11th, at 5pm and will feature 2nd Hand Soldier, Hobbs the Band, and Larry and His Flask~ all to coincide with the Friday Night Art and Wine Bop, when live music, fine art, and fine wine, from 5-9pm, will decorate the insides of participating NorthWest Crossing merchants!
Centrally located on NorthWest Crossing Drive, The NorthWest Crossing Bend Spring Festival is designed
to build community for the neighborhood of NorthWest Crossing, to promote vitality for the many fine merchants and restaurants of the NorthWest Crossing Neighborhood Center, to invite greater Central Oregon to discover this pristine place, and to gather and celebrate the coming of Spring! Using art as our canvas, music as our medium, and children’s activities and performances as a way to honor local area families, we, at West Bend Properties, Brooks Resources,Tennant Development, and C3 Events, are proud of the many ways that this festival might enrich your life.
The festival launches into full gear on Saturday, April 12th, when you can “pull your best Picasso” by entering the
Street Chalk Art Competition (for both adults and kids) and qualify to win any of a number of great prizes! As you browse
the more than 50 local and regional fine artists, crafters, and importers, by walking the artist promenade and the Souk de Spring Festival, you may bump into recycled art installations, known affectionately as “trashformations,” created and installed by local area fine artists. You might also see a 10 foot high puppet, zany stilt walkers, jugglers, magicians, fire dancers, a bike rodeo, and other merry-making!
The Children’s Street will be packed with drumming, music and more! And
there will be free children’s arts and crafts at our “creation station,” hosted by local professional artists-in- residents. And we’ll be blooming with great sounds all week-end long~ check out the Peak 104.1 Mainstage, where our very own Larry and His Flask, headline the Friday Night Kick-Off Concert, and The Shook Twins, along with Catie Curtis, Seth Glier and Redwood Son, all let it shine on Saturday.
The “Conscious Living Showcase” vendors are a remarkable group of
businesses who will be promoting green, clean, and collective wellness. We’re bringing fine wines, Bend Distillery Spring themed cocktails, Atlas Ciders and Deschutes Brews on tap. In producing this festival, we are standing behind the many courageous bulbs, perennials, birds, and trees, who, despite their annual confusion, are resolute in their belief that spring is indeed coming to Central Oregon!

School of Music, Westside Village Magnet School, and the String Theory Group, among

2ND HAND SOLDIERS 2nd Hand Soldiers was formed by inspired singer Darian Mahaney and her dad John Collins AKA JC on the guitar in 2007. Band members Mackenzie, Jaren, Jarrod and Meshem all bring their influence to the unique sound of their music. You will hear the sounds of Tanya Stephens, Toots & the Maytals, Adele, Aretha Franklin, and others throughout their energetic set.
HOBBS THE BANDHobbs Magarét , a Texas Pandhandle guitar player, Patrick Pearsall a left-handed Seattle-raised bassist and local drum set phenom Kaleb Kelleher raised the tent roof off the 2012 Sisters Folk Festival in their debut performance. Their post-industrial blues rock burns up the Central Oregon night.
LARRY AND H IS FLASKHailing from Central Oregon, Larry and His Flask are a high energy, five-piece carnival of a band that incorporate rock, folk, bluegrass, soul, brass band, punk and alt-country into their unique sound. Some people call what they do “folk-punk”, others call it “a bluegrass traveling cirus”. No matter what you call it, this is a band that has to be seen to be believed.
CAT IE CURT ISCatie Curtis, dubbed a “folk-rock goddess” by The New Yorker and treated as one by her loyal fans, is one veteran artist who has resolutely refused to coast along in comfort. Performing songs at the festival from her 13th album, Flying Dream, this work captures the way she’s embraced a season of heady change with the emotional intelligence that has been her songwriting signature.
SETH GL IERDespite his young age of 24, Massachusetts based singer/songwriter/pianist/guitarist Seth Glier is a seasoned troubadour. Averaging over 250+ live performances a year, he has shared the stage with artists as diverse as James Taylor, Ani DiFranco, Martin Sexton, Emmylou Harris and Ryan Adams and is becoming renowned for his passionate live sets. USA Today remarks that his “exquisite tenor echoes Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel”.
TUMBLEWEED PEEPSHOWTumbleweed Peepshow is a local collaboration between three very talented singer/songwriter instrumentalists. Benji Nagel, Raman Ellis and Brent Alan perform their original songs that reflect the wide-open space and dramatic effect of their rural and mountainous home in Sisters, Oregon . As a trio, they pull at the heart-strings and create a raw, soulful, bluegrass-infused sound with real life, acoustic stories and a groove you can move to.
T IM SN IDER BANDTim Snider is an energetic and intense performer! Playing the violin since the young age of three, it is no surprise he has master several different instruments including the electric violin, guitar and cajon. Using a combinations of instrument and skill Tim's music can be described as a world- fold- jazz hybrid.
REDWOOD SON AND THE REVELRYThe authentic bluesy, warm, Americana sound of Redwood Son and The Revelry, leaves their audience wanting to take them along, as they float down the river, or warm themselves on the banks of it. Redwood Son's music has always been an effort to unite the laid-back vibe of sunny, southern Californian acoustic music with the immediacy and heart of 90's hip-hop.
SHOOK TWINSIdentical twins, Katelyn and Laurie Shook, Kyle Volkman and Niko Daoussis form this inspired quartet, featuring a wide range of instrumentation, including banjo, guitar, electric and upright bass, mandolin, electric guitar, electronic drums, face drum (beatbox), glockenspiel, ukulele, banjo drumming and their signature golden EGG. Beautiful twin harmonies, layered upon acoustic and electric instrumentation coupled with Laurie’s inventive use of percussive and ambient vocal loops, and Katelyn’s repurposed telephone microphone, set their sound apart, creating a unique and eccentric blend of folk, roots,

Chalk Art CompetitionFeaturing Professional Chalk Artists
from Bend and across the State! Saturday, April 12 11am-5pm
In the tradition of fantastical street art festivals held across the globe, we invite professional artists, students, kids and anyone who doesn’t mind a little chalk dust on their hands and knees to “bring what you got” to this awesome artistic event and competition. On Saturday, April 12, the east end of NorthWest Crossing Drive will turn into a collection of some of the finest street art around. Whether you’re an Adult 18 and over, or a Student 8-17, we have an empty piece of paved canvas ready for you to let loose with pastel brights.
The event will also feature four highly esteemed artists creating exhibition street chalk art murals. The photos above depict the works of previous professionals and contest winners.
The Chalk Box, a non-competitive chalking area for kids under 8 is perfect for little ones. Send them over to create their own special masterpiece with sidewalk chalk, sponges, brushes, brooms and more.
Tips From a ProPlan your drawing ahead of time and bring a few essential supplies to make your street painting experience successful. Things you might want to bring:
• Chalk-we’ll have some pastels on hand but bring your own for a wider selection• A pre-sketched drawing or photo for reference• Tape measure• Carpenter’s chalk snap line (if working from a grid)• Yardstick for drawing straight lines• Knee pads• Masking tape• Pieces of cardboard• Felt chalkboard eraser• Plastic surgical gloves• Baby wipes to keep your hands clean• Hat• Sunscreen• Water• Camera! All work is handmade on potters wheel. Peter’s finishing techniques are all alternative firing methods; horsehair, pit, raku and slip resist. No glazes are used and all pieces are one of a kind.

Karsten Boysen Port Orchard, WA
Karsten Boysen holds Bachelor degrees in art and education, and a Masters of Fine Arts degree, all from the University of Washington. His sculptures are created from recycled steel found in scrap yards.
A bend, burned steel frame of a mobile home that was destroyed in a fire inspired him to see the beauty in loss. The shapes of the steel damaged by fire created a visual foundation for his art that continues to evolve today.
The artist has numerous large public percent-for-art and private art commissions in Alaska, Washington, Oregon and Arizona. He formerly instructed art at the University of Washington, the University of Alaska, Juneau; and was Washington State Arts Commission Artist-in-Residence at the Seward Park Art Studio in Seattle.
Boysen explains his art in the manner of a native Alaska artist who worked with ivory. ‘To make a bear, start with a piece of ivory and cut everything away that does not look like a bear,’” he says.

This year we are thrilled to host the TRASHFORMATIONS exhibit at this year’s
festival. TRASHFORMATIONS is a brilliant partnership between Pak-It Liquidators, a
local liquidation store and The Environmental Center, where from April 4th through April 6th this year (8am-5pm all three days), Pak-It opens their yard and store to individuals and teams of all ages, amateurs and professional artists alike, to create one of a kind sculptures, all recycled from the store. This year the sculptures will be delivered and installed in NorthWest Crossing
during the festival for public viewing. The caliber sculptures will be visible throughout the festival with signage denoting materials and artist.

BEHIND THE CURTAIN Constructing a Spring Festival
about C3 Events and staffing the event
For almost 25 years, C3 Events has been a different sort of contractor,
building community in Central Oregon. Company founder, Cameron Clark, studied the notion of “community” while working on his masters degree at the University of Redlands. While there he discovered that connection led to care; that moving folks with beauty prompted more curation of beauty. And so, in 1990, he moved to Central Oregon and brought these same intentions to Bend! C3 founded Munch and Music in 1991, and added the Bend Spring, Summer and Fall Festivals shortly thereafter. In addition C3 Events has produced Peak Summer Nights at the Athletic Club of Bend, Munch and Movies, the Woodland Park Zoo Concerts (in Seattle), Maya Angelou, the Hullabaloo and the Saturday Farmers’ Market (our favorite new event). Building community requires heavy lifting. Our team, this week-end will be asked to defy impossible odds (more than once). Here’s a bit about each of these lovely community builders...

Leann SchoalesEvent LeadLeann was perhaps, the most talented event technician in the C3 history-- having just the perfect knack for design and event aesthetic. Most recently, Leann has parlayed her event planning, food and
beverage, and sales experiences into a role as the wedding and event lead for Tetherow.
Jim KoneConscious LivingShowcase DirectorJim launched this grass roots street dedicated to non profits, mom
and pop businesses, green living, and healthy lifestyles four seasons ago. It’s all about community. Jim’s history in green building, and owning his own steel construction company has made him a massive asset for our team.
Bill PurswellADA City PermitCompliance DirectorBill is entering his fourth season of helping to make sure that C3 Events as
accessible for everyone. He is a former school teacher who infuses care and detail in this very important aspect of what we do.

lovely human, Jen is perfectly suited to work as the new C3 Events ADA Liaison.
Natalie FletcherKid’s Street and Chalk Art Competition CoordinatorA fine artist and body painter by trade who recently starred in a gameshow network reality television shoot about
body painters, Natalie brings her deep, soulful love for detail into all aspects of her C3 Event planning and street coordinating.
Lee Perry-GibbensOperations CoordinatorOwner of the event planning/talent purchasing/consulting firm “Event-Theory,” Lee comes to the Spring Festival as the single most experienced event
logistics and operations planning coordinator in Central Oregon. Lee has previously worked with Lay it Out Events and C3 Events for more than 15 years.

her extensive experience in sales and food and beverage to become one of the brightest stars in the C3 Events hemisphere. Melissa’s ethic of care and love of events have led her to her current roles in sponsorship and beverage sales and event lead management.
Tiffany ClarkArt and SoulTiffany Clark comes from the hospitality industry, where most recently she served as the Vice President of Marketing
for Pronghorn Properties. She is a distiller of soul, a creator of beauty. Everything she touches (artist coordination, general counsel, event development) turns to gold.
Cameron ClarkOwner, MeddlerCameron is a cancer survivor who finds his greatest joy in spending time with his daughters Cecilia Grace (8) and Liliana-Kayce-Marie (5).
He has been producing award winning events since 1984 (30 years). He is passionate about building community and looks forward to a great 2014 season.

Towards this end, as a work in progress, we will be implementing some additional programming for the NorthWest Crossing Bend Spring Festival that will include the following: • On site full time ADA Event Permit Compliance Leader (Bill Purswell) ~ electric chord maintenance-- keeps them taped down, covered with ramps, etc ~ ensures that porta potties are maintained at proper ADA levels ~ working with Cascade Security staff to ensure that ADA event loading and unloading zones are kept unobstructed ~ working with Cascade Security staff to ensure that temporary ADA parking spots are maintained for use by the ADA community ~ monitoring key sidewalk access points, and making sure that they remain available for use ~ monitoring placement of event rental equipment to make sure that it is strategically located or relocated to promote less obstructed pathways
