COMMODORE’S COMMENTSAhoy OSC members, This is it .... APRIL .... the month of our Big Regatta! The "2014 Lake Weir Invitational & 10th Annual Harpoon Nationals Regatta”!!!We have been preparing and working behind the scenes to make this a success. By now you know we have the time, the place and the team (that's all of us) to do it. Be sure to go to www.regattaregistration.com and sign up whether you are a participating sailor or a non-participating attendee, sign up. We want to be able to plan on dinner and lunch counts and all of the details that make these kind of events run smoothly.!!We have advertised this event with the help of our friend, Joan Bernat, to sailing clubs within a 200 mile radius. Our active Intra-Lake OSC sailing competitors have spread the word and enthusiasm to our friends in the near-by clubs at Lake Monroe, Crescent Lake, Gainesville, Central Florida Yacht Club, and sailors at Palatka on the St. Johns River. Jim Davis of the CFYC has contacted the Buccaneer/Mutineer sailors out of Tampa to join us. We have posted it on the “[email protected]" site because it is, after all, also the Annual Harpoon Nationals Regatta. We are anticipating our friends from Texas, Chicago, and Jamaica to return with vigor. The water is up to ripe levels on Lake Weir ...What more could we ask for .... Wind? Let's work on that!.!!Speaking of the "Intra-Lake OSC sailing competitors", by now you should know who I mean. This is a nucleus of OSC members which is growing who have grasped the brass ring of racing in the regattas of near-by Sailing/Yacht Clubs. It is propelled by Ed Sims, Paul Straub, and John Hult, who have carried this ball for years. Recently it has expanded with newer members, like me and Ross Martin, who have added a sailboat to the mix and within the last month another new member, Jim Edens, has joined the ranks. Also, Bob Cole and David Moring are outstanding OSC sailors who also belong to Lake Eustis Sailing Club and compete there on a regular basis.!

With the expansion of these additional sailboats active on the Intra-Lake racing scene allows for!interested, but maybe reluctant, members to request to jump into the fray of crewing. These!races are a blast and an excellent opportunity for the bug of racing to bite you.!!I would like to point out that just this month, in the two regattas in the Intra-lake events, all of our OSC competitors won trophies in each regatta.!!Trans-Monroe Regatta / March 1st / Sanford, Florida: !Ed Sims', "Point Blank" and crew; Paul Straub, John Hult, and Barbara Hancock won trophy for 6th out of 26!!

Jim Edens and Charlene Johnson; catamaran,"For Play", won 11th place trophy and #1 trophy for catamarans!!

Ross Martin and Art Twitchell's, "Pivot" won 12th place trophy out of 26 (not bad for first time racing

with "Pivot"!).!

Shamrock Regatta / March 15th / Palatka on St John's River: !Jim Edens and Ken Ficket's, "Undecided", won 1st place trophy for Class B!!

Ed Sims', "Point Blank" and crew; Paul Straub, John Hult won 2nd place trophy for Class B!!

Ross Martin and Art Twitchell's, "Pivot", won third place trophy for Class A!!!That is a pretty good showing for a breath-of-fresh-air on the nearby sailing scene and OSC participation.!

But, as you know, we are a social as well as sailing club and for those supporting the club's activities with their enthusiasm and goodwill, our hats off to our other members, we would seriously not exist without you.!!At our March Buccaneer meeting at Cody's Restaurant, we had our annual Napkin Nominations for OSC Club Officers for 2014-2015. Oh yes! It is always a mystery as to what will emerge from this fluid tradition. We got nominees in spades .... What a Team! In fact, before the wind could blow away our trusty list, we held elections at our next meeting which was the OSC cover-dish monthly meeting held at Charlene Johnson’s on March 20th. By the way, Thank you so much, Charlene, for a very warm and productive meeting at your lovely home. The new Officers are announced in the "OSC Meeting Minutes" Secretary's Report in this Newsletter ...be sure to read on.!!There is so much to be covered in this Newsletter that it flabbergasts me as to how Jan Schumacher continues month after month to keep churning out!these magnificent editions..... Jan, You do an outstanding job! Thank you for your creative, resourceful and very appreciated hard work!!!!Looking forward to seeing everybody at our April 3rd Buccaneer meeting at Francesco's (previously Taverna Red) Restaurant. Will this be another Gavel transfer event?????!!Your Commodore,!!Art Twitchell

What were you thinking? That is far and away the most common response I get when I tell people that I’m building a boat. Even sailors who find the project interesting ask that question, although not usually verbally. I can see it in their eyes and they’re asking primarily because sailors know that time on the water is often difficult to come by and I could certainly spend more time sailing if I wasn’t constantly in my garage building this thing. It’s also very likely that I’d have a better final product if I left the boat building to the professionals. With this in mind it’s not likely that I’ll be able to offer any logical and compelling answer to the question to what was I, or am I, thinking, but perhaps I can, through illustrating my project, provide some measure of insight into the madness that has afflicted me.!

First, I’ve nearly always sailed multihulls and am addicted to the speed and stability of these boats. I’ve been particularly interested in trimarans recently. A good trimaran offers the boatspeed of a multihull and the room of a monohull (more so in fact). In particular I’d looked at the Corsair boats with a certain amount of lust. The problem with the Corsair boats, at least until the Sprint 750, is that to get a genuinely fast boat, you had to consider one of the larger, more expensive, tris. The smaller tris are great, but if you’re going to race sailboats, faster is better and the performance of the smaller tris just isn’t the same as the larger ones and it’s hard to justify the expense of the big ones. Of course I view this from the perspective of high-performance catamarans, which are hard to beat for flat-out speed and are relatively inexpensive.!

One day I stumbled upon a trimaran that I thought might well fit my needs. While there are only a few of these built, and all of them were built by owners, they seemed to perform well and are small enough to be responsive. It’s the F22 and I had to have one. However, after talking to the designer, Ian Farrier in New Zealand, it became all too clear that production was some time off and I was unable to exercise any real measure of restraint, so I purchased the plans and started down the path of building my own boat.!

Now is probably a good time to note that I really do like working with my hands. And it’s a great feeling to watch the boat coming together. I’ve made a lot of progress, but I think it’s best to start the tour of my project with the finished product.!

There are a variety of options and configurations for the F22, but the one to the right is very much like the boat I’m building (I’m even a fan of the color choice; although for my wife, not so much, lol). The boat has a fairly large center cabin and a cockpit that can accommodate 6 people in a pinch. The trampolines on either side of the main hull provide a lot of additional space. The boat is 7m (22’10”) long and 5.5m (18’) wide under sail. The boat folds to only 2.5m (8’2”) wide for trailering. Once completed, I expect that the displacement will be approximately 1,200 lbs. The boat will carry 386 sf of sail area (main and jib) with options for a screacher and/or asymmetrical spinnaker. The boat shown is somewhere in Taiwan. !

Building the boat starts with building the form frames, which are attached to a support that positions the form frames properly. Once the form frames are in place, batons connect the form frames and create the mold. This photo illustrates the form frames with the batons installed. This is the mold for the outer hulls (amas or floats) and the keel is to the right with the bow in the foreground.!

WHAT WERE YOU THINKING? BY JIM EDENS

Page 11: 2014 OSC April Newsletter - ocalasailingclub.org...April 26 - 27, 2014 2014 Lake Weir Invitational &! 10th Harpoon Nationals Regatta Carney Island Park! Lake Weir, Florida CALENDAR

Once the form is complete the foam is heated and placed in the frame. The foam is cut in strips and glued to each other to make the general hull shape.!

Once the entire hull half has been completed in foam, the inner laminate is placed on the foam. The hull half can be removed and set aside while the other ama half is built in the same mold. The photo to the right shows the starboard half of one ama. Once the two starboard halves are completed the form frames are turned around to build the port halves of both amas. Also in this photo is the blank for the carbon fiber chainplate, which is the attachment point for the rigging.!

Once 4 ama halves are completed, assembly of the hulls can start. Since the ama halves (and later hull halves) are made in the same mold, they match up well and can be glued together with little difficulty. The decks for the amas are constructed separately from the hull and are installed after the assembled ama is removed from the form frame.!

The photo to the right shows the installed deck with the hatches in place, but not yet attached. To complete the amas, the outer laminate is applied around the entire hull, making the laminate continuous. The laminates are overlapped at the gunwales and along the keel to add additional strength to these critical areas. The photo above (right) shows one of the laminated amas (the starboard one), but both amas have been laminated and are awaiting fairing.!

I left out lots of details regarding bulk heads, specific reinforcement, and other components. Nor is the project close to being done, which is why I’ve stopped short of showing my complete boat. However, I hope that you’ve found my project (or plight, depending on your perspective) interesting and insightful, particularly if you’re considering such a project. Of course I should also point out that while no production boats have yet been delivered, Ian is currently taking deposits and it’s unlikely that I’ll splash mine before delivery starts. It’s a bit comical to think that if you were to order a boat now, you may well be sailing your F22 long before I am. However, if you have lots of time on your hands and you enjoy working on a long-term project, building your own boat can be very rewarding.! ! !
