• a residential campus that fosters a sense of com-munity and integrates curricular and extracurricular life;

• and abundant opportunities for students to under-take community service, internships, and study abroad; to participate in substantive research, of-ten as early as the freshman year; and to study and reflect in ways that foster intellectual, spiritual, and moral growth.

TU’s 230-acre campus is located two miles east of downtown Tulsa, a metropolitan city with a popula-tion of about 400,000. The city’s remarkable cultural, technological, and economic resources nourish the university’s mission and enrich its life, just as the uni-versity, in turn, enriches the city.

In its vibrant urban environment, The University of Tulsa offers a diversity of learning experiences, a bal-ance between career preparation and liberal educa-tion, teaching, and research, and endeavors to instill in its students an understanding that stature as an individual and value as a member of society depend upon continual learning.

The University’s mission is nurtured and supported by:

• exceptional faculty, who draw students into the pur-suit of knowledge, introducing them to the pleasures and responsibilities of the life of the mind in a chal-lenging world, and who include in their numbers the 1998-99 Carnegie Foundation Professor of the Year for all U.S. doctoral and research universities, a national Carnegie Foundation Pew Scholar, a Carnegie Founda-tion Professor of the Year for Oklahoma, a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and four Fel-lows of the Institute for Advanced Study;

• a humanities-based general curriculum that stimulates

scientific, social, and artistic inquiry, while stressing competence in oral and written communication;

• graduate, professional, and research programs that foster advanced theoretical development, promote professional preparation, enhance the quality of the faculty, and extend the University’s international reach;

• substantial library resources and information technol-

ogy that support research and classroom learning;

The University of TulsaAs a comprehensive, doctoral-degree-granting institution, The University of Tul-

also home to several outstanding events too numerous to list, but those worth a mention include Mayfest, Oktoberfest and the Tulsa Pow Wow of Champions.

The Tulsa Port of Catoosa is acclaimed as one of the largest, most inland river-ports in the United States. The Tulsa International Airport offers direct service to most major U.S. cities and is another important contributor to our economic growth.

Ten higher education facilities serve the metropolitan Tulsa area. Options range from community college and vocational studies to undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs at both public and private universities.

Tulsa, one of “America’s Most Livable Communities,” is known as the Mecca for arts in Oklahoma. Art deco masterpieces are prevalent in many of our downtown buildings and churches. Spectacular works of art dot the trails of our beautiful River Parks. From the Tulsa Ballet and Tulsa Opera, to Broadway plays and musi-cals at the Performing Arts Center, to the Philbrook and the largest collection of Western American art at the Gilcrease, Tulsa’s rich cultural legacy greatly enhances our citizen’s quality of life.

The BOK Center hosts the top names in entertainment, as well as major sporting events including the 2011 NCAA Basketball Second & Third Rounds.

For a great shopping experience, a visit to Cherry Street or Utica Square is a must, and for those who would rather spend the afternoon on the links, Tulsa has several exclusive golf courses to choose from. During summer months, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic musical, Oklahoma!, is performed at the Discoveryland amphitheater where a barbecue dinner and roping lessons add to the evening’s entertainment. Tulsa is

What began as Tulsee Town in 1836 under a stur-dy oak tree, which still stands today at 18th and Cheyenne Streets, is today the second largest city in Oklahoma. Ask people to describe Tulsa, and you’ll likely get many different answers. It was a city forever changed by the discovery of oil in 1901. It is home to art deco treasures and nationally renowned museums. Its African American heritage left its mark, in both the business and music worlds. And it’s a city of nostalgia and special memories for countless Americans due to its location on historic Route 66.

Tulsa boasts a widely diversified business base, including aerospace, telecommunications, manufactur-ing, construction, high technology, healthcare, educa-tion, transportation and energy.

Tulsa has the second shortest commute time in the nation, ranks 15th in the nation for the highest rate of high school graduation and boasts a cost of living at 11.5 percent below the national average while the county per capita income is 20.7 percent above the national average.

Tulsa, Oklahoma — “Green Country”Tulsa is nestled in the northeastern quadrant of Oklahoma, right in the heart of “Green

Country.” The rolling green hills and wooded terrain of the city lies at an elevation of

700 feet above sea level and offers a temperate climate. Tulsans enjoy 227 days of

sunshine a year and an average daily temperature of 61 degrees. The rainfall aver-

age is approximately 40 inches, and continually changing conditions occur in the city

during all four seasons.

The facility served as the host site for the 2008 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Division I Championships. It has also served as the home to multiple conference championships, including the 2002 Western Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships, the 2007 and 2010 Conference USA Women’s Tennis Championships, and the 2006, 2011, and 2014 Conference USA Men’s Tennis Championships. Other championships hosted include the 2002 NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championship First/Second Rounds and the 2004 NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championships.

Mike Case, developer and philanthropist, was the driv-ing force behind the project. “The dedication completed more than a year of construction and hard work, and pro-pels Golden Hurricane tennis into a new era,” said the late Fulton Collins, former chairman of the TU Board of Trustees, at the dedication. “This facility will showcase tennis talent, not only our students, but also will serve as a venue for world-class tournaments, exhibitions and clinics right here in our community. versity, I congratulate Mike on his super efforts in making this facility a reality.”

The facility has given TU a competitive edge in the recruit-ment of student-athletes, and has helped take an already outstanding program to the next level, not only in recruit-ing top prospects but also in attracting the nation’s top collegiate programs here for competitions.

Vince Westbrook, director of the tennis program and men’s tennis coach added, “This tennis center is of the caliber that most coaches can only dream. Because of Mike Case and his efforts, our players and coaches experi-ence what it means to have a state-of-the-art facility for practice and competition.”

Following the dedication, John McEnroe, internation-ally known tennis superstar, played the inaugural tennis match against members of TU’s men’s and women’s tennis teams.

A Message from the ITA

Tulsa Welcomes the 2014 ITA Men’s All-American Tennis Championships

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) is delighted to have the ITA Men’s All-American Championships hosted for a 10th straight year by the University of

Tulsa at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. For their long-standing support of this event, we would like to thank Vice President and Director of Athletics Dr. Derrick Gragg, the Golden Hurricane athletics department and especially Director of Tennis and Men’s Head Coach Vince Westbrook, who will be serving as the tournament director.

The ITA Men’s All-American Championships has served as a springboard to professional success for many collegiate stars. Several former collegians had strong showings at the 2014 US Open: Bob and Mike Bryan (Stanford) won their 18th Grand Slam title and 100th career title as a pair. The brothers defeated fellow Stanford alum Scott Lipsky and his partner Rajeev Ram (Illinois) in the semifinals. In the singles draw, both John Isner (Georgia) and Kevin Anderson (Illinois) reached the third round, with Anderson falling in four sets to tournament champion Marin Cilic. As the governing body of collegiate tennis, the ITA oversees 10 National Championships. Four of those events are sponsored by the United States Tennis Association (USTA), as are all 85 USTA/ITA Regional Championships. In addition, the ITA administers the ITA College Tennis Rankings at the NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and Junior College levels. The ITA also has a comprehensive awards program for players and coaches to honor on-and-off court achievements. When you are not on site at the University of Tulsa this week, be sure to follow live scores from the event at www.ITAtennis.com and receive real-time updates on the ITA’s Facebook and Twitter pages. Best wishes to the participants and coaches on the start to another great season.

Always,

David A BenjaminITA Executive Director

College tennis resumes this fall as the nation’s top players are set to compete for the first men’s national title of the fall season at the 2014 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men’s All-American Championships. For the 10th straight year, the University of Tulsa’s Michael D. Case Tennis Center will be the site for the ITA Men’s All-American Championships.

Prequalifying matches are set to begin on Sept. 27 with qualifying matches following on Sept. 29. A field of 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams will then compete in the main draw on Oct. 2.

Singles quarterfinalists, doubles finalists and con-solation champions will receive an automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Nov. 7-10, held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, NY.

Highlighting this year’s men’s singles field is preseason No. 1 Julian Lenz of Baylor University. The junior was named the 2014 ITA Player to Watch after finishing No. 4 in the ITA National Singles Rankings. He advanced to the semifinals in Tulsa last year, fall-ing to eventual champion Mitchell Frank of Virginia.

USC’s Yannick Hanfmann begins the season ranked No. 2 after a strong junior campaign. The senior clinched wins for the Trojans in the semifinals of both the NCAA Team Championships and the ITA Division I National Men’s Team Indoor Championship.

About the ITA Men’s All-AmericanTennis Championships

Axel Alvarez of Oklahoma kicks off the season in the No. 3 spot, turning in a 38-7 record during the 2013-14 season. Alvarez made it to the semifinals of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships during the fall, then posted a 13-match winning streak spanning two months during the spring.

For the second consecutive year, the Tennessee pair of Mikelis Libietis and Hunter Reese start the year as the top-ranked doubles team. The Volunteers captured the doubles championship last year in Tulsa, finished as runners-up at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships and won the NCAA Doubles Championship, while topping the doubles rankings nearly all season.

Players to watch include Virginia senior Mitchell Frank and Vanderbilt senior Gonzales Austin. Frank won this event as a freshman in 2011 and again as a junior last year. He starts the season as the No. 4 player in the ITA Preseason Singles Rankings. Austin is one of three return-ing semifinalists and will start the season ranked No. 9.

A number of former ITA Men’s All-American champions have gone on to professional success, including John Isner (Georgia), who reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the US Open in 2011; Bob and Mike Bryan (Stanford), whose 16 Grand Slam doubles titles and 100 overall doubles crowns are both Open era records for a pair; James Blake (Harvard), who peaked at No. 4 in the world in 2006; MaliVai Washington (Michigan), who was the 1996 Wimbledon men’s singles runner-up; and Mikael Pernfors (Georgia), who was the 1986 French Open men’s singles runner-up.

About the ITA Awards program:As the governing body of collegiate tennis, the ITA promotes both the athletic and academic achievements of varsity collegiate tennis players. The ITA, which is comprised of nearly 1,700 men’s and women’s varsity coaches and 20,000 student-athletes from over 1,200 institutions, has a comprehensive awards program for players and coaches to honor excellence in academics, leadership, sportsmanship and athletic performance. Awards are given to both men and women, on the Regional and National levels to all Divisions represented within the ITA (NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, and Community and Junior Colleges). The ITA annually recognizes over 3,000 student-athletes on an individual and team basis from over 500 different varsity tennis programs. More than 300 coaches participate in the award selection process, serving on Regional and/or National selection committees.
