ConcentratingPhotovoltaics (CPV)andConcen-tratingSolarPower (CSP)aretwoareasofsolarenergyresearchanddevelopment(R&D)thatarerapidly evolving and attracting a high level ofinterest and innovation. These technologies uselensesormirrors toconcentrate sunlight fromalargeareaontosmallhigh-efficiencysolarcellsorthermalreceivers.

CPV, compared to non-concentrat ingphotovoltaics,allowstheareaofthesolarcellstobereducedbytheconcentrationratio,offeringasignificantreductioninthecostofthephotovoltaicsystemforwhichthesolarcellisoneofthemostexpensivecomponents.ThesystemdesignofCPVis highly dependent on the concentration ratio.High-concentration systems usually incorporatehigh-efficiencymultijunctionsolarcellsandtrackthe sun, typically on a 2-axis tracker. The useof a tracker usually makes high-concentrationCPV primarily compatiblewith large-scale utilityinstallations. Low-concentration systems, withconcentrations less than 10 suns, usually usesiliconorthinfilmtechnologythatdonotrequiretrackersandthusareconducivetobothroof-topandcommercialapplications.ThefollowingtopicsonCPVareofinterest:•highandlowconcentratingoptics•fluorescent/luminescent/daylightingoptics•holographicconcentratoroptics•spectrumsplittingconcentrators•optimizingintegrationbetweenopticsandsolar

cells.

CSPconventionallyusesmirrors to reflect sun’sradiation toa receiverwhere it isconverted intohigh-temperatureheat,whichgenerateselectricitythroughaturbine.TransformativeconceptsintheareaofcollectorsandreceiversforCSPwiththepotentialtoachievelowcostandhighefficiencygoalsmayinclude:•novelcost-effectivematerialsanddesigns

forcollectorsthatcanberapidlyassembledandinstalled,havehighopticalperformance(≤4.0mradpointingaccuracyand≥95%weightedspectralreflectivity)whilemaintainingsufficientflux.Potentialtechnologiesinclude:high-qualityoptics,ultra-low-costcollectors,material-efficientstructures,snap-in-place

facets,lenses/membranes,GRIN,waveguides,collectorpods,passivetracking,fluidics,photo-responsivematerials,etc.

•novelcost-effectivereceivermaterialsandselectivecoatingsenablingreliablehigh-temperatureoperation(heattransferfluidexittemperature≥650°C)andhighthermalefficiencies≥90%.

•non-imagingapproachestocollectionandtheirviablecouplingwithreceiversthatmeettheopticalandthermalrequirementsabove.

Nonimaging designmethods usually involve solving ordinary orpartialdifferentialequations,calculating theflowlinesof the raybundles,coupling theedge raysofextendedsourcesandtargetsoroptimizingamulti-parametermeritfunctioncomputedbyray-tracing techniques. While geometrically based,thedesignfundamentalshavebeenextendedtothe diffraction limited and even sub-wavelengthdomain.Thereforeapplicabilityexistsinnear-fieldopticalmicroscopyandnanometerscaleoptics.

This conference will address the theory ofnonimagingopticsanditsapplicationtothedesignand experimental realization of illumination andconcentration systems, tailored freeform optics,displaybacklighting,condenseroptics,high-fluxsolarandinfraredconcentration,daylighting,LEDopticalsystems,laserpumping,andluminaires.

Therevivalofconsiderableworkinsolarenergyconcentration for both photovoltaic and thermalapplications,muchofwhichincludesnonimagingoptics,prompts reincorporating thesefields intothisconference.
