Elementary Schools Visits this year
Throughout this year, the CICESE Chapter has made many visits to elementaryschools in Ensenada, Baja California. In each visit, we gave two 1 hourpresentations. We also reached nationwide with one of our member’s temporarystay in Tepic in the state of Nayarit, Mexico, where she gave presentations on localhigh schools.
Without a doubt, these talks encourage the academic development of kids,encouraging them to continue with their studies and to develop their scientificskills.
Elementary Schools Visits this year
School visit
Student Feedback Seminars (with coffee)Throughout the year, the chapter organized 15 feedback seminars, on which chaptermembers could improve their oral presentation skills through amicable feedback.Coffee and cookies were given and cordial talk was encouraged.
Department seminar logo design competition
In collaboration with the department seminar program, a contest for the procurement of a new logo was realized.
A monetary prize was given to the winner.
Demonstration at Local Multicultural Festival
An event organized by the local government along educational institutions in which to show the local community, basic science and applications.
UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering Visit
The student chapter was able to organize a lab visit to UCSD, visiting ProfessorShaya Fainman’s laboratories at the Jacobs School of Engineering. 20 peopleattended.
National Astronomy Observatory Visit• Twelve students were allowed to visit and experience the San Pedro Martir
National Astronomy Observatory in the state of Baja California. This observatoryboasts the largest telescope of its kind in the world. San Pedro Martir is one ofthe 3 best locaitons in the world for astronomic observation.
Science Workshop for Teens DemonstrationThrough a collaboration between UNAM, UABC and CICESE, the Science Workshop forTeens organize a workshop for 40 high school students. The selection level for thisworkshop is highly competitive and on a national scale. The student chapter was invited toperform an optics suitcase demonstration, which gathered the interest of these highperforming kids.
Optics and Optoelectronics Summer School, Oral Presentation Awards
The Optics and Optoelectronics Summer School is an eventorganized every year by the Optics Department at CICESE inorder to entice STEM undergraduate students across thecountry to join our program.
This year, members of our Student Chapter showed theirresearch work through a poster session. Many of ourmembers gave instructional workshops on diffraction,polarization and lasers. Also, they worked directly with thestudents in their projects. At the end of the two weekprogram, the students gave an oral presentation of theirwork. The student chapter awarded the first 3 places in acontest for best oral presentation with prizes andrecognition.
This broadened the outlook of the participants regarding thelines of research in the Optics Department of CICESE.
Outreach Educational Prototypes Contest.This chapter members-only contest allowed the showcasing of simple and demonstrative educational experiment prototypes. The judges were chosen amongst faculty in order to promote neutrality. Prizes were awarded to the first 3 places.
National Week of Science and Technology.
Another outreach and community embracing event organized by the local government and undergraduate and postgraduate schools.
2014 Student Chapter Leadership.
Our officers Alma González, Juan Esparza and Hector Sanchezattended to 2014 O+P Leadership Workshop.
2014 SPIE Optics + Photonics exhibition 2014
We traveled to San Diego in order to attend the exhibition floor of the O+P Conference to attend the whole conference with the Officer Travel Grant.
Optics Outreach Games 2014Gibraham Graciano and Claudia García, winners of the Outreach EducationalPrototype Contest, competed in the 2014 Optics Outreach Olympics of SPIE withthe experiment “Color of light”. This demonstration won the 2014 People’s ChoiceAward.
2014 Regional Optics Congress, Third EditionThe third Regional Optics Congress CReO2014, washeld in the Institutional Auditorium at CICESE and wasa totally free event for students of engineering andphysical sciences aimed to expand their knowledgeon topics related with optics. This congress consistedin technical, career and business oriented talks givenby key leading speakers from institutions such asCICESE, UAA and RevLux as well as 4 internationalresearchers from CREOL, Boston University, BellLaboratories and University of Dayton.
Eight travel grants were offered by the chapter, andthe event concludes with a successful social mixer.
