SUPERINTENDENT’SCOMMENTS

We moved! You can now find us at16 North Street Extension, just upthe road from Video World right off

Route 7. Our phone number is once again773-1822. It is very exciting to have a longterm home where we can settle in and setit up to meet our needs. It is the first timein the history of the Recreation & ParksDepartment where our administrativeand operations staff are on the samecampus. It is very positive! Thank you tothe Aldermen for supporting the key piecethat was needed to make it a viable home forthe administration – a new roof. VermontRoofing did a fantastic job and there are nomore leaks!

It is sometimes overwhelming to thinkabout how we as a Recreation & ParksDepartment fit into the solution to movingRutland forward through our challengesof substance abuse and poverty. We havedetermined that our role is to provide greatparks and great programs for our residents. We are the department designed to improveyour quality of life through people, parks andprograms!

We are moving forward on many greatprojects that EJay Bishop started in hisquest to improve our parks and facilities. The Godnick kitchen is being updated withan improved design and new appliances;Otter Creek Engineering is providing anengineering study for the Rotary fields; workis continuing on bringing Giorgetti Arenainto full code compliance; and the MainStreet Park gazebo will be getting somemuch needed attention.

One of our two main goals for theRecreation division is to do a better jobof marketing what we offer to youth notutilizing our programs. We will directlymarket with Tapestry to make sure ourscholarship program is fully utilized. We arealso looking at an intramural 3rd – 6th gradebasketball program in collaboration withTapestry in November and December. Oursecond goal is to increase the satisfactionlevel for our programs. We want to makesure that we are providing the best programpossible for our participants. Please be onthe lookout for surveys at the completion ofprograms.

The parks division this year is lookingto get back to the basics and nail down allloose ends. I have promised them to keepNoricanes, Irene’s and other major weatherevents out of Rutland to allow them to focuson doing all the little things that make ourparks special. Our parks staff is incrediblypassionate about parks and the role theyplay for the community in providing placesto play, recreate, socialize, or just simply sitand relax.

Have a great spring enjoying our incrediblecity and all that it offers!
