ILMINSTER LIONS 2014 SUMMER FETE
Welcome to our 2014 Summer Fete. After two years of holding the Fete indoors we decided this year to go back outside into Swanmead School Sports Field where we can do so much more and in the hope that we get good weather. This year our Fete is on Saturday 24th May during the Spring Bank Holiday weekend. As always there are lots of stalls to visit and things to see and do.
Entertainment includes the ever popular Bartlett Irish Dancers, Dan Brazier the Magician, Punch and Judy with Tony James, a Static Model Aircraft Display by the Ilminster and District Radio Control Club and we are hoping to have the ever popular Climbing Wall. There is also a Junior Football Competition.
Once again we are indebted to the local business community for their support for the Fete. Please mention that you saw their advert in our Fete Programme. Thanks also to Swanmead School for allowing us to use their Sports Field.
In addition to helping local charities to raise funds we want everyone who comes to our Fete to have a good time. We hope you have a great family day out and find something for all the family to enjoy.

I have lived and worked in the Ilminster area all my life and have been a member of Ilminster Lions for the past 6 months. I was delighted to be invited to join Ilminster Lions. I have known of their work for many years and often thought it would be good to be involved, so when approached, I was keen to take up the opportunity.
I have found the members welcoming, helpful and understanding, recognising my working commitments. The Club prides itself on it’s involvement in and support from the community. Rightly so, much of the help the Club gives

The Summer Fete is Ilminster Lions largest and usually biggest fund raising event of the year. As well as that, it is a major community service activity aimed at giving local people a good day out, with something for all the family to enjoy. This and other smaller events held throughout the year generate funds and all of these create a public face for the Club.
In a year we will support individuals or groups. Occasionally we have a major project we want to help with a large donation, but more likely funds are spent on smaller local things. The majority of cases are never reported. Sometimes donations to a school, to a community event like the Christmas lights make the newspapers, but never a personal story.
Many Club Members are active in the community in their own way. Amongst other things, helping disabled people, involvement in organising the Ilminster Senior Citizens Christmas Lunch, collecting unwanted spectacles for sending to third world countries, managing the very successful ‘Message in a Bottle’ to name but a few. Basically, Members can get involved in Lions activities as much or as little as they like.
Ilminster Lions appreciate the tremendous support they get from the local community and the willingness of local people to help others through the Lions. Many Club Members joined the Club as a way of putting something back into their community. The Club has been going for over 35 years now and we want it to go on and on.
To continue our work in the community we need new members, male of female over the age of 18.

Juggler and Magic Man Dan Brazier is appearing at our Summer Fete for the first time. When we met him we were impressed with his skill as a juggler and magic tricks, but it was the way he related to his audience, a mixture of children and adults that convinced us that he would be right for our Summer Fete. Ilminster Lions Re-cycling Old Ink Cartridges
Just over four years ago a collection system was introduced into Ilminster
by the Ilminster Lions Club for the re-cycling of inkjet cartridges, toners
and used mobile phones. This project has gathered momentum and has
become a very important part of Lion’s fundraising .
If you would like to be part of this project you can donate your inkjet
cartridges (not Epson), toners and mobile phones in the special boxes
which can be found in Ilminster Post Office and Ilminster Warehouse.
Large numbers can be collected by arrangement. Please ring 01460 259371.

Tony James Traditional Punch & Judy Show
Making its first appearance at Ilminster Lions Summer Fete this well known family show travels thousands of miles every year appearing throughout the UK. During the summer it appears at major Town and Country events, Steam Fairs, Festivals, Agricultural, Historical and Nostalgia related shows. Tonight the show will travel to Abergavenny for the Steam Rally and then next week returns for the 11th year to the Royal Bath & West Show at Shepton Mallet
Tony James’s Traditional Punch & Judy Show is the largest UK touring show. The beautiful puppets are old and originally carved long ago by Fred Tickner, the man who made Muffin the Mule.
Each Punch & Judy performance today will be different featuring the old familiar and favourite characters along with many rare Edwardian, Victorian and Georgian novelties. So make certain you see all the performances.
