HISTORY OF KALEIDOSCOPE AT ROLAND PARK COUNTRY SCHOOL

orty years ago, Alumnae Secretary Peggy Webb Patterson, 1947, was

charged by Headmistress Anne Healy to create outreach programs for alumnae, their friends and the Baltimore community. The RPCS Evening School was established during the 1972 – 1973 academic year and with Peggy’s guidance, RPCS began to develop and offer courses. One of the goals was to support the School’s mission to foster

a lifelong love of learning in alumnae and sustain their connection to RPCS. A few classes per year were offered originally and Kay Cavanaugh’s popular course in modern art paved the way for success. Today, Kaleidoscope at RPCS has grown considerably. Courses, book talks, trips, and summer camps are offered in the fall, spring and summer semesters. Over 100 Kaleidoscope educational programs and entertainment options with 1000 participants are hosted each semester. Topics include Cultural Arts, Book Talks, Creative Pursuits, Film, Personal Development, Culinary Arts, Body, Mind and Soul, Children/Family Programs and Travel. A partnership with Diversions affords Kaleidoscope patrons outstanding seating at major Broadway theater events. Judy Pittenger’s Great Books courses, now offered in the afternoon and the evening, are continually full with a waiting list. Kaleidoscope’s reach has expanded exponentially throughout the greater Baltimore community. Catalogs are mailed to a database of 13,000, many of whom do not have any other relationship to RPCS. Kaleidoscope is led by the External Programs Advisory Board who serve as ambassadors to develop and support Kaleidoscope programs and promote the School’s mission of lifelong learning. RPCS is deeply grateful to these dedicated volunteers who help identify opportunities, design programs, provide contacts, chaperone trips and distribute catalogs wherever they can!

RPCS WelcomesThe Young Victorian Theatre

Company Back to the Sinex Theater Stage

The Young Victorian Theater Company will begin its second season at Roland Park Country School with opening night of The Gondoliers on Saturday, July 12, 2014. The Gondoliers is the 12th Century comic opera in the Gilbert & Sullivan collaboration, a story whose texture is established by mistaken identity, tandem rule by two gondoliers, and satire of nobility and class distinctions.

NOTE: Dates and Times Are Subject to Change.

The “Young Vic” as it has come to be known over decades as Baltimore’s longest-running summer musical theater company, traces its roots to 1971. The company was thrilled with its opening season during July 2013 at the Sinex Theater. The production of H.M.S. Pinafore played to well-attended, enthusiastic audiences in this beautiful venue at RPCS. The presence of a fine orchestra pit and other amenities delighted longtime patrons.

CELEBRATION OF ART AT CYLBURN ARBORETUMPREVIEW BRUNCH AND LECTUREART IN THE INTERIOR Saturday, June 14 $103 12:00 – 2: 00 pmLouis Shields

Louis Shields, artist, interior designer, restorer, and owner of Hastening Antiques in Middleberg, Virginia will speak on Art in the Interior: how color and design elements affect us and our personal environments. Using illustrations from antiquity to modern times, we will explore the importance and the universal appeal of color, shape, and structural balance. A fabulous Southern champagne brunch prepared by The Classic Catering People will be served, and attendees will get a sneak peek of (and first dibs on!) the artwork for sale at the Celebration of Art at Cylburn Arboretum. The Celebration of Art will feature the works of over 30 regional artists, including works by Mr. Shields.

NOTE: Event will be held in the Vollmer Center at Cylburn Arboretum, 4915 Greenspring Avenue. Directions will be provided upon registration.

Louis Shields was a natural artist from a very early age. He studied painting at the University of Alabama and became a fashion designer in San Francisco. In the 1970s, he opened a boutique of his own designs on Fifth Avenue in New York. He later moved to London where he became an expert on antiques’ restoration, and had a successful antiques business for many years. During this period he restored houses from the 16th, 18th and 19th Centuries. In 1981, he returned to the U.S. and opened Hastening Antiques Ltd. in Middleburg, Va., specializing in 18th Century European furniture, and offering interior design services. Throughout, he continued to draw, etch, and paint. His current works are influenced by a lifetime’s experience in classical architecture, the structural form of traditional furniture, and the subtle colors of antiquity. He is represented locally by Oriet’s Fine Art, where his paintings are available for purchase.

BEAUTY AND THE BRAIN: CELEBRATION OF ART SUNDAY LECTURESunday, June 152:00 pmAdmission is free, however, reservations are required to ensure ample seating Dr. Gary Vikan

In this richly-illustrated lecture, Dr. Gary Vikan, former director of the Walters Art Museum, will explore the impact of recent developments in brain science on possible solutions to such old and puzzling questions as: Why are experts fooled by fakes? Is there something called “significant form” - forms in art that we all will acknowledge as beautiful? How is an artist’s creativity affected by brain damage? Ponder these questions while in the presence of nearly 100 works created by regional artists during the public open day of the Celebration of Art Show and Sale.

NOTE: Event will be held in the Vollmer Center at Cylburn Arboretum, 4915 Greenspring Avenue. Directions will be provided upon registration.

Gary Vikan recently retired as director of the Walters Art Museum. Dr. Vikan’s vision was the driving force behind the renovation of the Centre Street building in 2001, and the contextual reinstallation of the museum’s ancient, medieval, and 19th Century collections. During his tenure Dr. Vikan secured three major collections, and has assembled at the Walters the finest collection of Ethiopian art outside of its native country.

Long before she was Carole King, chart- topping music legend, she was Carole Klein: Brooklyn girl with passion and chutzpah. She fought her way into the record business as a teenager and by the time she reached her twenties had the husband of her dreams and a hot career writing hits for the biggest acts in rock ‘n’ roll. But it wasn’t until her fairytale life began to crack that she finally managed to find her true voice. Beautiful tells the inspiring true story of King’s rise to stardom, alongside husband and co-writer Gerry Goffin and fellow song writers Barry Mann, and Cynthia Weil, set to the music that made her one of the recording industry’s most enduring icons. You’ll be carried away just like the NY Times and USA Today by one great song after another including So Far Away, It’s Too Late, Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow, Go Away Little Girl, You’ve Got A Friend and You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman. Beautiful boasts a thoroughly endearing performance by Jesse Mueller. She captures King’s earthiness and pluck, and you can hear her sound blossom. You can also hear the echoes between her life and her work. You can hear a legend being born.

Velocity is set in the Brooklyn brownstone in which Parson’s octogenarian, Alexandra, has barricaded herself and rigged her living room with dozens of Molotov cocktails. Her estranged youngest son, Spinella’s Chris, has been delegated to break in and try to coax her out. It’s the kind of story that is happening in living rooms all over America. So what's the answer? ALL THE WAY – On BroadwaySaturday, May 17 $2657:00 am - 8:30 pm

The place was the American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) in Cambridge Massachusetts, and the reason All The Way, a new historical drama by Robert Schenkkan has sold out its entire run here has everything to do with the man who spends much of the evening in an oval-shaped space at center stage. Bryan Cranston, who racked up three Emmys as the chemistry teacher-turned drug kingpin in the obsessively adored cable series Breaking Bad, and just won the 2014 Golden Globe Award for the Best Actor on TV, stars as President Lyndon Baines Johnson, fighting to assert himself as a figure of authority, both moral and political, in the tumultuous months after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Cranston, who is expert at playing troubled protagonists who have lost their way, transitions from a moment of quiet mourning to an embrace of his manifest destiny. As Johnson, he is a force of nature, bargaining, cajoling, glad-handing, and even tyrannizing those around him to accomplish the little victories he knows will lead to the ultimate prize. He is master manipulator, charismatic charmer, good old boy, bad old boy and ultimately, the tragic hero. Mr. Schenkkan, the playwright, brings us a wide-focus chronology of a key story line often overlooked in the history of the 1960’s, one that resonates with today’s Washington gridlock. With a cast of 17 portraying 45 different politicians, activists, aides and spouses, we are privy to all the late-night phone calls, backroom bargaining, principle-bending compromises and the sly negotiations that serve as aphrodisiacs for this power-hungry lot.

While most schools seek to prepare their stu-dents for the next academic step we strive to prepare our students for life — a life full of wonder, joy and com-plexity. We empower our students with the integrity, will and character they need to live a purposeful life. To achieve this, we build a foundation of strong academ-ics. Then we add layers of experiences and opportunities carefully designed to nurture our students’ curiosity, creativity, confidence, compassion and leadership delivered by an award-winning, experi-enced and much loved faculty. This occurs within the context of a genuinely supportive community where every student has multiple friends, mentors and others looking out for her. We are proud of our strength as an academic institution to stand at the forefront of all girls’ education as we create tomorrow’s world leaders.
