‘Honor your father and your mother, that it

may be well with you and that you may

live long on the earth’. Eph. 6:2-3

The Providence of God – 4 In our previous article we were looking at the law of compensation, namely Paul’s statement in Romans 8:28 that “all things work together for good.” We were noticing God’s providential care in working things out to the benefit of His people. As we close that thought we want to look at the example of Joseph in the Old Testa-ment. Joseph was sold by his brothers into slavery where he would eventually be carried into Egypt and become the slave of Potiphar. God was with Joseph and he soon rose to the position where he was placed in charge of all that Potiphar had. But Joseph was a handsome man and soon Potiphar’s wife tried to entice Joseph into lying with her but Joseph refused. This con-tinued day after day until one day she caught Joseph by his garment saying, “Lie with me.” Then Joseph fled leaving his garment in her hand. Potiphar’s wife ac-cused Joseph of coming in to sleep with her. Because of this Joseph was cast into prison. But again God was with Joseph and soon he was placed in charge of all the prisoners and in time would be released and become a ruler, second only to Pharaoh himself. God would use this as a means of saving Jo-seph’s family. Later he would tell his brothers, “But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive” (Genesis 50:20).

The Law of Limitation The promise that comes from God through Paul in Romans 8:28 is limited in its application. It is limited first of all to “them that love God.” This means it is limited to those who have obeyed God in becoming Christians. Jesus made this clear in His statement of John 14:15 – “If ye love me, ye will keep my commandments.” The corollary to that would also be true, namely, “if you do not obey God, you do not love God.” Therefore, this promise would not apply to you. Secondly it is limited to “them who are the called.” Again this is in reference to Christians, to the church. The word “church” is a transla-tion of the Greek word ekklesia which literally means “the called out.” We have been called out of the world to follow Christ. This same apostle told the church at Thes-salonica, “to which He called you by our gospel, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ” (II Thess. 2:14). Then finally it is limited to those who are called “according to His purpose.” God’s eternal purpose was to gather the saved of all ages into one body “in Christ,” and was a design “which God foreordained before the worlds unto our glory.” What a marvelous promise from our God! What a relief to know, that though each of us will experience sufferings and sorrow in this life, God will work it out for our good. But remember that it is a promise limited to His children. Let us make sure that we are His and that we are living daily for Him.
