Times They Are A Changin’! (With new features and the latest technology!)

Summit Hut has been making some big changes the last few years and this year is no different. Last year we focused on relocating our Northwest store into Oro Valley, on Oracle just north of Ina. (If you have not checked it out yet- you really should- it has a wonderful look and feel and the staff are great!) This year we decided to put our focus on a new and improved website!

On November 5th, we launched a new version of SummitHut.com in the interest of bringing you all of the latest gear and clothing to you in the way you wish to shop. We have changed our category and brand pages, added customer account options

and implemented faster and easier navigation. With these new updates and faster check-out we hope to be your go-to, online specialists in addition to being your local regional experts!

And not all of our efforts this year were web focused, we celebrated our 45 years of business by expanding our free Meet the Experts programs to occur week-ly (7pm on Wednesdays at Oro Valley and 11am on Saturdays at Speedway), had our first ever Customer Appreciation event, added Hiking Club Appreciation Nights and just recently hosted our 2nd Annual Gear & Beer Guys Night that served as a fundraiser to the Arizona Trail Association. We continue to look for-ward to adding more events to our busy schedule (something for everyone!), and pressing forward in bringing you the newest gear and fashion trends.

And don’t you worry, next year we will not disappoint as we have some other big changes in the works! Warm Wishes,

Dana, Jeremy and the Summit Hut Crew

Summit Hut will host two awe-inspiring nights of the Banff Mountain Film Festival on Wednesday, March 18th and Thursday, March 19th, 2015 at the Fox Theatre Tucson!

Each evening will feature a unique selection of films ranging from high-adrenaline action sports to thought-provoking mountain films with no films repeated! Tickets will be avail-able soon at both Summit Hut locations and online at www.summithut.com.

2015 Banff Film Festival

Situated on the western edge of the Santa Catalina Moun-tains, Catalina State Park is a haven for wild-life and recre-ationists alike. This 5,500 acre park boasts ample oppor-tunities for hik-ing, camping, bird watching,

mountain biking and horseback riding surrounded by bountiful flora and fauna, including more than 5,000 saguaros and over 150 unique bird species.

The park is supported by The Friends of Catalina State Park (FOCSP), an all-volunteer organization who work to improve, promote and preserve the park for present and future generations. FOCSP were the recipients of one of two 2014 Summit Hut Banff Grants. The fund-ing helped support community based educational pro-grams including the Nature Program at Catalina State Park. Every Saturday throughout the cooler months of the year, volunteers set up aquariums with snakes and critters indigenous to the Sonoran Desert. Visitors both locally and from all over the world learned about the balance of the Sonoran ecosystem and about

snakes such as the Western Diamondback, Mojave Rattler as well as the nonvenomous snakes so im-portant to our area.

Funding also s u p p o r t e d other educa-tional activities like the Ari-

zona Archeol-ogy Expo at Catalina State Park, which celebrated the area’s rich ar-c h e o l o g i c a l history, teach-ing about sites like Romero Ruins with an emphasis on the impor-tance of pres-ervation.

As part of our commitment to supporting our local community, each year Summit Hut donates a portion of the proceeds from the Banff Film Festival to local outdoor related non-profit organizations. Last year we con-tributed nearly $5,000 to some amazing or-ganizations including our two Grand Prize

Winners – Friends of Catalina State Park and Southern Arizona Rescue Association. Learn more about their work and if you have a fa-vorite outdoor organization that is deserving of special recognition, let them know about our Banff Grants. We’ll be accepting applica-tions for the 2015 grants on our website soon!

For more than 50 years, area residents and visitors have benefited from Southern Arizona Rescue Asso-ciation’s (SARA) highly skilled members who serve as a vital link to safe rec-reational land use. SARA is a professional un-

paid organization providing des-ert and mountain search and rescue services to all of Pima County and Southern Arizo-na, at no direct cost to the tax-payer. The mis-sion of SARA is to save lives through search, rescue and outdoor safe-ty education.

In an average year, SARA responds to 85 search and rescue missions and logs approximately 4,500 volun-teer hours in the field. SARA members are proficient in all aspects of search and rescue, including advanced medical care, wilderness search, high-angle and tech-nical rescue, cave rescue, swift water rescue and mine

rescue. SARA’s services are offered free of charge, 24-hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year and the organization has achieved a 99% success rate of individuals successfully rescued. SARA received a 2014 Banff Grant which was used to outfit their Moun-tain Rescue Truck – adding storage, additional rescue equipment and a much-needed upgrade to their ser-vice radios.
