ACCOUNTING Accounting is the language of business.

The major in accounting at the Sy Syms School of Business prepares students for many different careers. The usual career path is to join the professional staff of a public accounting firm, where audit, taxation and consulting services are provided to a wide range of clients, and then to become a certified public accountant. One may enter into a private practice as a public accountant to offer these services as an integral part of the company’s management.

The accounting department offers numerous courses in accounting, taxation and business law. Required courses vary for students who follow the CPA track or the non-CPA track.

Department Chair: Dr. Moses PavaFor more information, visit www.yu.edu/syms/ug/accounting/courses

FINANCEThe finance program at Sy Syms develops an understanding of the domestic and international financial environments by studying shareholder value creation, corporate decisions, financial structures, capital markets and instruments, derivative markets, strategies in risk management, and the nature of risk and reward in long term investment planning and entrepreneurship.

Sy Syms students with a finance concentration gain expertise in all areas of finance, including asset management, investment and commercial banking; financial management, the financial aspects of venture capital, mergers and acquisition; and management consulting. Additionally, a finance concentration will help prepare students for future careers in government and law.

Students who major in finance will take courses such as corporate finance, investment analysis, portfolio management and advanced corporate finance.

INFORMATION AND DECISION SCIENCESThe information and decision sciences (IDS) department at Sy Syms gives students an understanding of why and how information systems and technology are driving changes in markets and business. Many of the strategic and routine decisions that firms face involve the study of “big data,” which includes analyzing large datasets through the use of information systems and information technology. Through knowl-edge of operations management and related statistical and quantitative methods, firms are able to gain a competitive advantage by creating cost leadership and providing flexible response to customer needs.

The IDS department offers courses in information systems that include topics such as business intelligence, decision models and database management. Our major in Business Intelligence and Marketing Analytics focuses on the intersection of business intelligence approaches and marketing. This interdisciplinary approach uses data and marketing knowledge to show how companies can get closer to their consumers, develop a better understanding of the relationship between their consumers and the brand, and help marketers create better marketing plans and innovative products.

Department Chair: Dr. Avi Giloni For more information, visit www.yu.edu/syms/ug/information-decision-sciences/courses

MANAGEMENTBusiness and management are the rigorous and critical study of the ways in which individuals and groups interact in a dynamic business environment. It is an aca-demic discipline that examines how business decisions are made and the impact of these decisions on internal and external environments. With today’s advanced technology and globalization of the business world, the role of a manager is more crucial than ever. With the experienced background of our management faculty, an academic program has been developed that prepares our graduates for careers in management with a special focus on innovation and entrepreneurship in the global marketplace, with a growing emphasis on sustainability.

The management department offers courses in organizational behavior, leadership and business in the global environment.
