Entering its 64th year, the Ohio Valley Conference continues to build on the success that has made it the nation’s eighth-oldest NCAA Division I conference. For only the second time in a decade, the Conference expanded by adding Southern Illinois University Edwardsville as the league’s 11th member in 2008. The move expanded the OVC’s geographical footprint to the St. Louis market and marked the first change in membership since expanding to the state of Alabama (Jacksonville State, Samford) in 2003. The 2009-10 school year saw a change in leadership as Beth DeBauche was named the seventh full-time Commissioner in league history. She is currently one of just five females to be the head of a Division I conference, and one of just eight to lead a Division I conference all-time. The last three commissioners of the OVC have moved onto jobs as the commissioner of the Big Ten, Big 12 and the Mid-American Conferences. The OVC’s proud past dates back to 1948, but seeds for the new league were actually planted in 1941. It was then that Roy Stewart, the athletics director at Murray State, Charles (Turkey) Hughes, the athletics director at Eastern Kentucky, and Kelly Thompson, the public relations director at Western Kentucky, first broached the idea of forming a new conference. Discussions were put on hold by World War II, but reemerged Feb. 27-28, 1948 at the Kentucky Hotel in Louisville as the three original institutions com-bined with Morehead State, Louisville and Evansville to form the OVC. In the 1950s, the OVC became a pioneer on a much more significant scale socially. During times of racial segregation, league mem-ber Morehead State became one of the first non-traditionally black mid-southern institutions to accept a black student. In 1958, Marshall Banks earned athletically-related aid at Morehead, which signed a second black athlete, Howard Murphy, a year later. In 1961, Murphy earned all-conference recognition as a halfback in football. With racial barriers broken, the rest of the institutions in the league began to provide educational and athletic opportunities to African-Americans.

A first in the OVC occurred in 2008, when the league had a first round draft pick in both the NFL (Tennessee State’s Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie) and Major League Baseball (Eastern Kentucky’s Christian Friedrich) Drafts in the same school year. The OVC sponsors the following sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis and track for men, and basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and volleyball for women. In addition, the OVC also sponsors the combined men’s and women’s sport of rifle. Current league representatives include charter members Eastern Kentucky University, Morehead State University and Murray State University, along with Austin Peay State University, Eastern Illinois University, Jacksonville State University, Southeast Mis-souri State University, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Tennessee State University, Tennessee Technological University and the University of Tennessee at Martin.

Tennessee State has been a member of the Ohio Valley Conference since 1986.

Founded in 1912, Tennessee State University has grown dramatically from a small college to two campuses: the 500-acre main campus and the downtown Avon Williams campus which is located in the heart of Nashville near the State capitol.

The diverse student population of more than 8,000 represents 46 states and 45 countries. TSU has been listed for 11 consecutive years in the U.S. News & World Report “Guide to America’s Best Colleges.”

Tennessee State University is a comprehensive, urban, coeducational land-grant university offering 45 bachelor degrees and 24 master’s degrees. Doctoral programs include biological sciences, psychology, public administra-tion, computer information systems engineering, administration and supervision, and curriculum and instruction. When you think about Tennessee State University, many things come to mind – a rich heritage and legacy in ath-letics, academics, entertainment, research and service.

Tennessee State University has long been a rising star among universities across the country. It is designated as one of the best public historically black colleges and universities in the nation, and it’s not by accident.

Tennessee State University is among the few historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) with a chapter of Phi Eta Sigma, the oldest and largest freshman honor society in the United States and a Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, the most prestigious honor society comprising all academic disciplines.

A great deal of focus has been given to improving the academic environment – strengthening our research repu-tation, attracting and retaining the best and brightest students, encouraging service-focused programs, engaging and supporting expert faculty in diverse fields, building on our student-centered philosophy and holding steadfast to our motto of “Think. Work. Serve.”

There are more than 400 faculty and more than 1,200 staff who are part of the university’s team.

Additionally, the university’s rich strength in embracing diversity is ev-ident with 45 countries and 46 states representative of the student body.

The beauty and accessibility of the uni-versity’s main campus is a plus with now 65 buildings on more than 450 acres.

Complimenting the main campus is a newly renovated downtown campus that features a simulated stock-trading center, a student computer laborato-ry and continuing education, distance learning and multimedia services.

The university is arming students with the intellectual resources to compete in a global environment. In support of that, important partnerships have been established with leading global compa-nies such as Boeing, Raytheon, Dell, IBM and others, in which both funding and service-learning opportunities are currently active.

KEAN HALL, a simplified Art Deco style gymnasium erected in 1951 at a cost of $1,500,000 was dedicat-ed Wednesday, November 25, 1953.

The structure is located on the south side of the campus at John Merritt Boulevard and 33rd Avenue, North and is named after former TSU Football head coach and Athletic Director, Henry A. Kean.

The building contained at the time of its construc-tion: a gymnasium, health, physical education and recreation classrooms, laboratories, staff offices, and facilities for indoor intramural sports, staff and student recreation and physical therapy. The build-ing was vacated in 1980 when the HPER moved to the new Gentry Center Complex.

The $300,000 renovation, approved in 1986-1987, connected the building to the Floyd-Payne campus center in 1991. The building became a recreational facility for the general campus population. It also serves as the headquarters for the Air Force ROTC, TSU Athletics and the academic and Hall of Fame.

The PERFORMING ARTS CENTER is located adjacent to the east side of the existing Strange Music Building. The facility houses the Theater, Television, Radio and Music Departments and includes a complete renovation of the Strange Music Building.

A performance theater seating for 400 was constructed as part of the new building. Theater department spaces include classrooms, support spaces and offices. Rehears-al and production facilities are provided for television and radio departments, as well as offices and support areas.

The music department has new laboratory facilities, practice rooms, classrooms, offic-es and an expanded band practice room and support facilities. The project included ap-proximately 30,400 sq. ft. of renovated space (the Strange Music Building) and 43,000 sq. ft. of new construction.

The DAVIS BUILDING is topped by its landmark cupola and houses the Department of Languages, Literature and Philosophy and the Thomas E. Poag Auditorium. The building, which once housed the administrative offices, is named after TSU’s second president Dr. Walter S. Davis.

The FLOYD-PAYNE CAMPUS CENTER contains various student and administrative offices, campus bookstore, post office, and dining services. The Center is named after former TSU student and fifth president, Otis L. Floyd, and long-time Dean of Students and Vice-President of Student Affairs, Joseph A. Payne.

The AVERITTE AMPHITHEATER located in the center of campus; landscaped and has permanent seating for 200. The structure is named after Laura M. Averitte, author of Tennessee State Universi-ty’s alma mater.

The BROWN-DANIEL LIBRARY was erected in 1976 and opened for service during the summer of 1977.

This present structure has 82,000 square feet of space with special study and research facilities for faculty and graduate students, and a Special Collections Room which houses the University’s histori-cal archives, theses, dissertations, and other special materials. The library is named in memory of Library Directors, Martha M. Brown and Lois H. Daniel.

Blue Never Fades

The 2013 season was a down year for the Tennessee State Uni-versity volleyball team. They qualified for post season play, but lost in the first round of the OVC Tournament and finished the year with a 10-18 overall record, 6-10 record in conference play.

For head coach Kathy Roulhac it was her first season under .500 since 2010. TSU had a strong month of October, going 6-4 and pulling within three games of .500, but won one game the rest of the season.

Coach Roulhac received some stellar performances from two players who return for 2014. Both senior Naomi Wells and soph-omore Arijana Anderson made All-conference teams last year. Wells, a redshirt-junior last year, made her second straight All-OVC team after finishing tops in kills per set (3.64) and points per set (4.11). Her freshman year at TSU, Anderson made the All-Newcomers team after posting 2.73 kills per set and 2.86 points per set. Coupled with the return of senior Taylor Swayz-er up front, and seniors Jaime Cooper and Ileanushka Maldona-do on defense, the Tigers have a strong base to build on in 2014.

The key factor to the team’s success in 2014 will be how they replace the production of the program’s all-time assist lead-er, Erika Moss. TSU has sophomore Taylor Patterson, who saw a limited amount of action as a setter last year, coming back for her second season under coach Roulhac. The New Cas-tle, Ind. native recorded 35 assists in 26 matches last season.

Another potential replacement is freshman Samantha Beltran. The newcomer from Mississuaga, Ontario, Canada has impressed the coaches with her ability and game IQ in training camp. She has also shown good ability on the block and she is a helper on defense. Coach Roulhac is very excited to see what she can do during a game.

The defense, with Maldonado and Cooper returning, will be strengthened by two newcomers: junior Madison Halterman and freshman Ariel Manuel. A transfer from Iowa Western Community College, Halterman was a standout libero for her school and Manuel has shown raw ability to get to almost any ball. Maldonado will fig-ure prominently in this year’s back line. The senior from San Marcos, Puerto Rico played in all 28 matches and led the team in digs, with 372.

The front line will be the strength of this team. With both Wells, Anderson, and Swayzer returning, newcomers Haley Hampton and Carla Grayson will have a wealth of experience to learn from. A transfer from Mesquite, Texas, Hampton has shown amazing athleticism and strength on the attack in practice. Coach Roulhac says the sky is the limit for her. Grayson adds her height and long arms to the block up front. Swayzer, a senior from Houston, Texas, has had a terrific camp and looks to build on her first year with the Tigers when she averaged 1.97 kills per set and 1.26 digs per set.

Between the experience of the returners and the talent of the newcom-ers, coach Roulhac has the kind of squad that will surprise people. Big Blue fans can look forward to a good year for Tigers volleyball as this team has the ability to improve on the ten wins they had a year ago.
