Philly’s voice heard through Kickstarter

Kickstarter is a simple con-cept — a website for groups with a specific project who need help fundraising. But in Philly, it’s been a huge boon for small businesses and unique projects.

“Kickstarter was ab-solutely essential in the story of Pizza Brain getting known outside of Philadel-phia,” said Brian Dwyer, founder of the famous neighborhood pizzeria and pizza museum in Fish-town.

“It was the beginning of the whole domino ef-fect of getting national attention,” Dwyer said. “We’ve had people from Tokyo to Germany to Downingtown, [Pa.], come through our doors and say they read about us some-where or heard about us

somewhere.”With their Kickstarter

campaign, which ended in April 2012, Pizza Brain raised $16,000 to put the finishing touches on its shop.

“When they walk in from the neighborhood, they have the pride in knowing this was some-thing they did with us,” Dwyer said. “I don’t think Pizza Brain would look the same magical way if we hadn’t done that.”

Next door, Little Baby’s

Ice Cream ran a smaller Kickstarter campaign but also raised their profile thanks to the website. They raised about $6,000 to get reusable cups to serve their pints in, instead of dispos-able paper cups.

“Presently, we use the exact same packaging that we purchased with these funds,” said Pete Angevine, co-owner and co-founder of the ice cream shop.

Currently using Kick-starter for Philly projects are many small businesses,

such as Gerald Lawson’s Dhengi Brand clothing.

“My brand is for ev-erybody — even aliens,” Lawson said of his Brew-erytown-grown clothing brand.

Lawson is raising funds to launch Dhengi Brand’s new fashion line. Since the death of his business partner last year, he’s re-doubling efforts to raise the profile of Dhengi (pro-nounced like “dingy”).

“I’m definitely trying to go to a new level,” Lawson

said. “Before [his partner] passed, we would always talk about the brand mov-ing forward, across the U.S.”

Lawson has 45 days to raise about $6,500. It’s his first attempt with Kick-starter, which he heard about after Spike Lee fund-ed a project on the site.

Philadelphia’s Data Garden, a trans-digital con-servatory, is on Kickstarter trying to raise $25,000 to get its “MIDI Sprout” bio-data sonification device — which converts plant bio-rhythms into audible tones — developed as a real in-strument for distribution.

“We’ve been using this technology ourselves for two years,” said co-founder Joe Patitucci. “People just kept asking us, ‘How can [we] do it [our]selves?’ We decided we want to make it really easy for other people to make music with plants and get this technology out there.”

Crowdfunding. The Kickstarter online platform is helping Philly groups get their voices heard.

Popular Comedy Central television show “Drunk History” set a season two premiere date and this year, one of its storytell-ing ventures starts at a Philadelphia bar.

The 10-episode second season begins on June 24 and earlier this year, an episode was filmed at McGillin’s Olde Ale House in Center City.

“Drunk History” is a web series turned comedy show, created by Derek Waters and Jeremy Kon-

ner, where an intoxicated narrator tells a — usually convoluted — story from an event in American history while famous actors lip sync and act out the dialogue — however slurred it may be.

Big names have appeared in the series including Jack Black, Bob Odenkirk, Winona Ryder and more.

Other featured cities this season include Bal-timore, Charleston and Honolulu. METRO

City fast-food workers support lost wages suit

In light of recent lawsuits claiming McDonald’s il-legally withheld wages from its workers, local fast-food workers called for changes outside the restaurant on Broad Street and Girard Avenue on Tuesday.

Workers gathered to

protest and share their stories and renew the call for higher minimum wage.

Filed last week in three states, the lawsuits claim the well-known restau-rant chain deliberately cut employees’ pay and enforced unfair work practices such as work-ing longer hours without compensation.

“Since November 2012 fast-food workers have been campaigning for $15 and the right to form a union without retalia-tion,” according to a news release.

The lawsuit demands the chain pay back the stolen wages and change its policies.

“As an employee, I have often questioned my pay,” said Justin Watson, McDonald’s employee and Philadelphia resident.

McDonald’s has refut-ed the claims. METRO

Man charged for nine rapes in three years

Jorge Arellano, 35, of New Castle, Del., was charged Tuesday for allegedly raping a woman nine times over a three-year period, state police said. METRO

A Philadelphia police of-ficer is suspended after being arrested in Mont-gomery County for al-legedly fighting with her boyfriend, and faces criminal charges, accord-ing to police.

Officer Robbi Huff, 35, a 15-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police De-

partment assigned to the Highway Patrol Unit, was arrested in Cheltenham Township on March 13 and faces charges of sim-ple assault and disorderly conduct.

The domestic incident for which Huff was ar-rested reportedly arose after Cheltenham Town-

Defying Ukrainian protests and Western sanctions, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a treaty on Tuesday making Crimea part of Russia again but said he did not plan to seize any other regions of Ukraine.

In a fiercely patriotic address to a joint session of parliament in the Krem-lin, punctuated by stand-ing ovations, cheers and tears, Putin said Crimea’s disputed referendum vote on Sunday, held under Rus-sian military occupation, had shown the overwhelm-ing will of the people to be reunited with Russia.

As the Russian national anthem played, Putin and

Crimean leaders signed a treaty to make Crimea part of the Russian Federation, declaring: “In the hearts and minds of people, Crimea has always been and remains an inseparable part of Russia.” Parliament is expected to begin ratify-ing the treaty within days.

Putin later told a rally in Red Square beneath the walls of the Kremlin, near where Soviet politburo leaders once took the sa-lute at communist May Day parades, that Crimea has returned to “home port.” REUTERS

Area of the Malaysia plane search now size of Australia

An international land and sea search for a missing Ma-laysian jetliner is covering an area the size of Austra-lia, authorities said on Tues-day, but police and intelli-gence agencies have yet to establish a clear motive to explain its disappearance.

Investigators are con-vinced that someone with

deep knowledge of the Boeing 777-200ER and commercial navigation diverted Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, carrying 12 crew and 227 mainly Chi-nese passengers, perhaps thousands of miles off its scheduled course from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

But intensive back-ground checks of everyone aboard have so far failed to find anyone with a known political or criminal motive to hijack or deliberately crash the plane, Western security sources said.REUTERS

Has Courtney Love found #MH370?

Courtney Love is about as stable as Los Angeles was at 6:25 a.m. on Monday. If given the choice, I would not elect Courtney to the position of Flight 370 Finder-in-Chief. For that, I’d probably go with an international team of aviation experts. However, the interna-tional team of aviation experts haven’t turned up much, have they? Every day they widen the search area so much that I presume we’ll soon be looking on the moon. Courtney Love, on the other hand, believes she knows exactly where it

is, so maybe we ought to give her a shot.

“I’m no expert but up close this does look like a plane and an oil slick,” she tweeted, with a link to the photo above.

She then tweeted that the plane was “like a mile away Pulau Perak, where they ‘last’ tracked it.”

I really don’t know what I’ll do with myself if it turns out she’s right. Then again, “Courtney Love Finding Missing People All Around the World Through the Power of MS Paint” is definitely a TV show I’d watch. MELINDA TAUB

Designer L’Wren Scott’s sudden death was made even more shocking when her social media ac-counts continued posting several hours after she died. Because of previ-ously scheduled posts or a PR team that wasn’t yet aware of her passing, several Facebook posts and tweets appeared after her death was announced, confusing and upsetting her followers. Perhaps the eeriest image was the above photo of several of L’Wren’s designs hung

from a tree and apparently lit from within, which appeared on the designer’s Facebook hours after her death was announced. A strange, ghostly image indeed, after the designer’s apparent suicide.

Her Twitter account also remained active, leaving some fans unsure of whether her death was a hoax or not. Fashion blogger Bryan Boy shared a befuddled screenshot and tweeted, “But L’Wren tweeted 3 hours ago???” MELINDA TAUB

‘That ’70s’ wedding shocks the cast

Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis are set to tie the knot and seem ridiculously happy together, and no one is more surprised than their former “That ’70s Show” colleagues. “Everyone shakes their head over the romance,”

a source says, explaining that the

pair “despised each other” while mak-ing the hit sitcom, according to Radar Online. “Ashton and

Mila were absolutely not friends during much of the making of ‘That 70s Show.’ In fact, they couldn’t stand working together.” That all changed, apparently, after Kutcher’s very public split from ex-wife Demi Moore. “Mila was the one who came forward to bury the hatchet,” the source ex-plains. “Everyone’s amazed at how diff erent Ashton and Mila are together from when they were younger. It’s such a total change.”

Jason Bateman plays a grown, profane man who crashes spelling bees in “Bad Words,” which he also directed. / GETTY IMAGES

Interview. Jason Bateman didn’t want to make another heartwarming tale about a jerk softening up.

For his directorial debut, Jason Bateman puts some pretty terrible words in his mouth as Guy Trilby, a grown-up spelling bee con-testant making life difficult for his tween-aged competi-tors with some truly wither-ing insults. That coarseness was something Bateman didn’t want to shy away from. “No one needs to see another PG spelling bee movie. We’ve seen those,” he says with a laugh. “Or another heartwarming tale about an adult befriending a child or vice versa. There’s a bunch of great movies that have done that and I didn’t want to do another

one of those.”Luckily Bateman had

an ace in the hole to avoid things getting too dark: himself. Known more for playing the nice guy, Bate-man as an actor has a de-cent amount of goodwill built up with audiences on which to rely. “I wasn’t afraid about pushing the envelope as far as possible because I knew that I’d be playing the character, and I was somewhat confident that I would be able to play him in a way where you would excuse his behav-ior,” Bateman says. “Or at least I knew that would be a nice challenge for me. I don’t know whether I hit the target, it’s not for me to say. But I do like that I was increasing my odds of hitting that narrow target and managing that very specific tone by being able to have a huge presence on camera as well as behind the camera.”

Surprisingly, Jason Bate-man the actor was not

Jason Bateman the direc-tor’s first choice for “Bad Words,” but he eventually managed to talk himself into it. “I went after some pretty big actors, some heroes of mine to play the part, and they were either too busy or not interested,” he admits. “Then I thought, ‘Maybe I should play the part because it’s actually go-ing to end up being a little

‘Bad’ to the bone On directing

Wearing both hats did prove logistically challeng-ing in other ways. “As a director, you can sit there and you can know exactly what you’re getting as you’re getting it. I didn’t have that perspective,” he says. “We had to adjust our process a little bit where we would rehearse a lot more with my stand-in in there so I could see

what the camera was see-ing. Then once I was satis-fi ed that everybody was doing it the way I thought that it needed to be done, then I went in front of the camera. And then after a couple of takes I would go and watch playback. If you watch every take in playback, by defi nition you’ve doubled your time in the day, so I couldn’t do that. I had to be judicious with that.”

easier.’ For better or worse, every single take is going to be exactly the way that I want it. You have no idea how long it takes some-times for a director and an actor to get on the same page while the whole crew waits before you can roll.”

A Doll’s house

What’s in a name? That Dolly Wells and Emily Mortimer are called Dolly and Emily on HBO’s “Doll & Em” wasn’t always intended. “We were calling each other by our

real names, thinking it wouldn’t be seen by any-one but us,” says Mortimer. “We were too lazy to come up with others.” Their fate was sealed when Jacobs labeled the fi le of the test episode “Doll & Em,” which still makes them queasy.

“We’ve had moments of hating it,” says Mortimer.

Jacobs agrees: “Their friendship is where this came from. That’s what’s being celebrated here. At the very base of this is something true, and that’s in those names.”

Best of the bestiesLifelong friends. Emily Mortimer and Dolly Wells teamed with Azazel Jacobs to make “Doll & Em.”

In the HBO comedy “Doll & Em,” Dolly Wells becomes the personal assistant of her lifelong bestie, the ac-tress Emily Mortimer. Over six episodes, Mortimer and Wells, who has so far largely worked in British comedy (including being one of Bridget Jones’ buds), explore a friendship as a crack runs slowly through it. In real life, only the bes-

tie part (and Mortimer’s Hollywood stardom) is true.

“We have a shorthand where we can understand each other,” Wells explains.

“We find things fun-nier sooner than some-body watching us. We fill silences with words,” says Mortimer. “We needed someone else in our lives.”

That person became

Azazel Jacobs, the film-maker of oddly rhythmic comedies like “Momma’s Man” and “Terri.” (He’s also the son of avant-garde ti-tan Ken Jacobs.) “I think if there’s anything I brought to the process, it was be-ing someone who’s out-side a relationship that’s so incredibly tight,” Jacobs says. “They have their own language. They don’t have to say many words for the other person to understand them. I felt like a conduit. I could sense what the audience would feel like [watching them].”

Mortimer and Wells had long wanted to work together. They thought it would be funny if Wells played an assistant, and modeled the overall arc — in which Wells starts getting more attention than Mortimer — on “All About Eve.” Another in-fluence was the Harold Pinter-scripted psychologi-cal thriller “The Servant” (albeit told with two gig-gly, sweet-natured people deathly afraid of confronta-tion).

They brought in Jacobs, who they had known since his days studying at the American Film Institute. He suggested making it into a self-contained TV show. They shot a test pi-lot while Mortimer was filming “The Newsroom.” The test became the first 20-minute episode.

Emily Mortimer, Azazel Jacobs and Dolly Wells collaborated on the new HBO show. / GETTY IMAGES

Jacobs wrote the scripts with Mortimer and Wells.

“It became what we then decided what we wanted it to be, which was a movie with all the aes-thetic qualities of a film-maker’s movie, made over six episodes,” Mortimer says. “It has the production values and the sensibility of a movie. But it just hap-

pens to be on television.”The fact that it’s about

showbiz came about not because they had a burn-ing desire to add to the deep genre devoted to it.

“We tried other things before, but they weren’t things we knew very well, particularly,” says Wells. “The idea of being actors we both really knew about.

There was something about me being an assis-tant that really resonated with us, because it seemed so funny and sad at the same time. That’s our hu-mor. There’s a darkness to it.”

2201 E. Norris

Lawrence McKnight, Presi-dent of BKM Properties, is expecting to break ground on this three-story, three-bedroom home this week. He anticipates about six months for completion, but mentions that the weather may interfere with that. This home isn’t the fi rst in the area for BKM, and it certainly won’t be the last.

“Demand is outpac-ing our ability to deliver,” says McKnight. “We keep

telling people we can’t build them fast enough.” McKnight also says that he’s very connected to the Fishtown and Kensington neighborhoods where he’s building: “We live in the neighborhood. If some-thing goes wrong, we’re right there to fi x it.”

The Perks: Third-fl oor master suite with balcony, roof deck with a view of Center City, hardwood fl oors, and what McKnight is calling a “grandiose” foyer.

Metropolis at Second and Wharton is 17 townhomes being built by Rock Construction and Develop-ment. “The developer and I sat down and discussed all of the things that a buy-er is looking for and tried to include all of those things as standard items in these homes,” says Noah Ostroff , realtor at Coldwell Banker Preferred. The es-timated completion date is late summer, leaving us just a few months to

pack up our boxes and get over to the ever-evolving Pennsport neighborhood.

The Perks: Three bed-rooms, 2.5 baths, roughly 3,000 square feet, fi ber-glass roof deck, two-car garage.

Take heart, not-so-clean person: With a delight-ful mix of self-help and humor, Jolie Kerr is here to turn your messy life into one of order and beauty (or at the very least, inspire you to make your bed in the morning). In “My Boyfriend Barfed in My Handbag … and Other Things You Can’t Ask Martha,” Kerr has taken the tricks and advice that made her column, “Ask a Clean Person,” so popular on Deadspin and Jezebel, and compiled them into one handy and, yes, neat book.

What is the No. 1 cleaning dilemma for apartment-dwellers?Too much stuff/too little space for it. Though, to be frank, this happens to homeowners, too. But smaller spaces present storage challenges that can be so difficult for people to overcome. Generally speaking, there needs to be a combination of getting rid of things and finding the right storage solutions for the things you do have.

What is the most overlooked cleaning task for women? For men?I actually don’t think there’s much of a gender divide there. The ques-tions I get from men and women are more similar

than dissimilar. One excep-tion would be bra washing for women — the ladies are really just not washing their bras often enough!

How did you become a clean person?Gosh, this is the $64,000 question! I was sort of always this way, which is a terribly unsatisfying

Chores. Boyfriend barfed in your handbag? “Ask a Clean Person” columnist Jolie Kerr has a solution.

The dirt on keeping clean

DOROTHY [email protected]@metro.us

Bonus question

Why is keeping a clean and orderly home important? It can make life easier, for sure. Things like not losing your keys, or realizing too late on an interview day that your lucky blouse has a stain on it — those are benefi ts of keeping things orderly. But some people thrive on chaos, so getting into why being clean is “impor-tant” isn’t so much my focus. ... If people want my help, I’m available, but I’m not interested in dictating to people how to live.

answer. And I started writ-ing my column as mostly a hobby — it was just a fun thing I did, sharing the body of knowledge I’d built up over the years.

Which is the one cleaning item you can’t live without and why?Scrubbing Bubbles. I mean, there are so many to choose from, but yeah, those bubbles delight me. I clean my bathroom twice a week, so having a product that basically does all my work for me is so marvelous.

What is the fi rst step a not-so-clean person can take to put them on the path of order and cleanliness?Committing to writing what they’d like their home to look and feel like is something I can’t recommend enough. ... Identifying where your home makes you feel panicked or bad and then considering how you’d like to change that is a really powerful step.

KARL LAGERFELDWe catch up with the designer in London to talk about street style and the recent Chanel fashion

You set the Chanel show in a supermarket. When was the last time you went grocery shopping? In a photo shoot for ELLE magazine. You see, it’s a part of daily life today on every social level. Everyone goes to the supermarket. That’s why

I had in the center of the show the chic couple with the Chanel bag because also they go there. It’s like a modern pop world. But I don’t shop. The show

was unbelievable. And people stole everything out of there. Even the food, eh? And the food was supposed to go to the poor.

gone too far? This [street style debate] is a fake problem. Every-thing changes. ....We live in the middle of change. Look at how the world has changed since this and all that. The computer has changed it all. Fashion is about change, and the world is about change, too. The changes in the world are not as quick as the changes in fashion. But we are in the middle of a huge change. I say: Don’t compare the present to the past if you want to survive happily in the next period. You have to adapt. Times don’t have to adapt to you. And then you start to say, “Oh the good old days!” And then you’re over.

launch is almost like recre-ation for me. It’s different from the normal daily discipline and work.

There’s been a lot of talk this week about something called normcore. It’s the idea of looking plain or boring, but with intention and

irony. Some people don’t have to make an effort to look boring, eh? I don’t know how irony and plainness can go together. Me, I look the way I look. My look was not a market-ing process. I had shirts with high collars already 30 years ago. I can show you photos from Helmut

Newton in the ’70s with shirts like

this. No, I don’t want to have a plain look. But perhaps I should because

I cannot cross the street without

people wanting to pho-tograph me. But the word “plain” alone is something that even with irony I prefer to escape. But I’d have to see photographs of this normcore and see it visually and decide.

“This is why I don’t do selfies. I hate selfies! It’s too wide, it’s too wide!” Karl Lagerfeld says. We’re in a hotel suite in Mayfair, London, and I’m following him from one corner of the room to another as we search for the correct light and the right angle to take the perfect Instagram.

Karl looks remarkably energetic considering that he’s just gotten off a plane from Paris for a quick trip to London to celebrate the launch of his first flagship store in the U.K. for his eponymous clothing line and his new perfume range. He plans to fly back home as soon as the parties are over. But first there is an interview to do and selfies to take. “I think they’re elec-tronic masturba-tion,” he says. But he does one for us anyway.

It’s been several months since the Xbox One and Playstation 4 started invad-ing our already overstuffed living rooms. However, there really hasn’t been all that much to, you know, play on either console. The drought begins to lift now. Here are thoughts on AAA exclusive titles for each.

‘Titanfall’

System: Xbox OneCompany: Electronic Arts••••The “Halo” series almost single-handedly made the Xbox and the Xbox 360 household names, so it’s only fitting that another first-person shooter would help put the new console on the map. “Titanfall” actually brings new ideas to the table, which could help bring new players to the genre. The gameplay is lightning fast and kinetic, calling to mind “Mirror’s Edge” rather than “Call of Duty.” Also, it must be noted, you can get in gigantic mechs and blast the crap out of everyone you see. When is that ever not cool?

About the only down-side here is the under-whelming campaign, which features some half-baked missions and mediocre voice acting. Seriously, though, this is a game for people who want to blow their friends up — and to that end, it is an

Emotional stress may trigger heart trouble in women

Location of study: U.S.Study subjects: 24 women, 16 of whom had microvascular dysfunctionResults: In an eff ort to better understand gender-related coro-nary artery disease, researchers at Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute studied the eff ects of emotional stress on women with a type of coronary artery disease called microvascular dysfunction. The condition occurs when the smaller arteries of the heart fail to work properly. Researchers found that the emotional stress of anger may contribute to the disease, which can lead to heart attacks and other cardiac issues.Signifi cance: The study sheds light on the diff erences between male and female coronary artery disease. Most men with the dis-ease typically exhibit blockages in the large arteries, while many women do not. Researchers also say that since smaller arteries are partly controlled by the nerve network that regulates heart rate, our thoughts and emotions may impact blood fl ow in these small vessels.

Migraine suff erers, rejoice

Location of study: BelgiumStudy subjects: 67 people with frequent migraines Results: In a recent study, a battery-operated device that uses external cranial neurostim-ulation to prevent migraines resulted in a signifi cant drop in overall migraine frequency. The Cefaly device, which resembles a headband, is to be worn daily for 20 minutes before the onset of a migraine. When compared to those who used a placebo device, patients who used Cefaly reported an up to 75 percent reduction in the amount of migraine medications they

consumed.Signifi cance: The results of the study were so impressive, the U.S. Food and Drug Administra-tion has approved it for use in the United States. The Cefaly medical device will hit the U.S. market in early April and will be available through a prescription.

Trial underway to test prostate cancer vaccine

Location of study: U.S.Study subjects: Men with newly diagnosed, localized prostate cancerResults: If successful, a develop-mental prostate cancer vaccine

may potentially trigger the body’s own immune system to kill cancer cells. The treatment, called ProstAtak, is designed for early-stage prostate cancer. It works through a series of three injections. Each is ac-companied by antiviral pills and standard radiation therapy. The combination seems to awaken the immune system to attack the cancer. Signifi cance: With the immune system jump-started, the patient potentially develops a lifelong immunity specifi c to their cancer. This circulating immunity may also be enough to mop up any leftover cancer cells throughout the body. In a previous study, the treatment was associated with a signifi cant decrease in expected tumor recurrence. A study at Advanced Radiation Centers of New York (ARC) and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is currently enrolling patients with newly diagnosed, localized prostate cancer.

“Sitting is death,” a col-league likes to remind the Metro newsroom. Morbid? Yes. True? Alas, yes.

The studies are in, and they are all horrible. A damning report from the journal Diabetologia, which looked at 18 studies involving nearly 800,000 people, found that the av-erage adult spends 50 to 70 percent of his or her time sitting, and that those who sit the most had “a 112 percent increase in their relative risk of developing diabetes, a 147 percent increase in their risk for cardiovascular disease and a 49 percent greater risk of dying prematurely — even if they regularly exercised.”

What’s a chronic sitter, aka the average office worker, to do? We need to change how we work. So, we looked at three alternative office chairs and workstations to gauge how realistic they are in the workplace.

The Buoy

Overview: If you’ve always wanted to sit on a stability ball at your desk but think you need something a bit more profession-al, the aptly named Buoy is your chair. The Buoy (starting at $199) is basically a wobbly stool with no back, so it encourages move-ment and sitting up straight. It is not scientifi cally proven to be

the handlebars. The FitDesk X is streamlined so it doesn’t take up too much space. Its workstation has room for a laptop and is tilted so that typing while biking is possible, although we primar-ily used it to browse social media (for work, of course). As bike desks go, it’s comfortable, quiet and, at around $250, within most budgets. Plus, it folds up easily. Frankly, it’s a great invention, one that will help a lot of people make sure they don’t die an early death while updating their Facebook accounts. Review: We all thought the FitDesk X would be our savior. Work out while at work? It was too good to be true. And it was. The FitDesk was novel but it’s hardly been used. Why? Because it’s awkward to be huffi ng and puffi ng next to your co-workers and then go into a meeting slightly sweaty. It’s perfect for home while surfi ng the ’net and watching TV, but not so much the offi ce. However, if you are in the market for a bike desk, we highly recommend the FitDesk X.

Our favorite

NextDesk Solo PlusOverview: NextDesk is the Mercedes-Benz of standing desks, made in the USA using sleek, sustainable materials such as natural bamboo and recycled aluminum. Sure, it’s stylish, but what makes it so great is that it has a quiet internal motor, letting you go from seated to upright in seconds. There are many diff erent models to choose from — some very large and beautiful — but we tested one of the smallest versions, the NextDesk Solo Plus. Un-like many standing desks, the NextDesk Solo Plus provides plenty of room for your desktop computer (not just laptop) and keyboard.Review: Our art director called the NextDesk Solo Plus “the greatest thing to ever happen to Metro.” Our movie critic said he felt “refreshed and lively” at the end of the day. This is the revolution offi ce workers have been waiting for. There is only one (big) drawback: the price. The one we tried comes in around $1,000, which is a lot for a workstation. But if you have the means, this is the desk to buy.

healthier for you, but if you take the chair’s hint — move! — it can be very benefi cial. Review: While attractive and fun, the Buoy isn’t an all-day desk chair. But for brief periods, it’s great. Ideally, we’d love to use Buoys around a small conference table for more casual meetings.

The USSR caused its own demiseRe: ‘Reagan did help world redecorate without the Iron Curtain’ (Metro, March 18) Actually, letter writer Timothy Laren is more accurate than Dan Schwarz with regard to the USSR situation and Ronald Reagan. The Communist regime that crushed the uprisings in the 1960s was much stronger. The USSR that Gorbachev inherited was much weaker, and long before Reagan demanded that Gorbachev “tear down this wall,” Russia was already making preparations for an inevitable transition. Russia’s own policies were its downfall. Decades of trying to best us in an arms race and misguided domestic policies caused

the USSR to implode more than any outside force. By the time Reagan showed up, the USSR was already in steep decline. AL SAINT JEAN, VIA EMAIL

RYAN HOWARD

The former MVP and three-time All-Star talked to Metro about his stance, his approach at the plate and whether

Phillies fans give him enough love.

THE BIG PIECE HOPES TO

RETURN TO FORMTrade rumors

Eagles unlikely to trade Jackson

Rumors are swirling about Eagles wide receiver DeSean

Jackson and his lack of clarity about his future with the team. ESPN’s

Adam Schefter reported that while the Eagles are not actively looking to move Jackson they

were open to hearing off ers for him.

It begins and ends with Ryan Howard for the Phil-lies. If everything else goes right for the Phillies and the Big Piece goes down, it’ll be a long summer at Citizens Bank Park.

It’s not a coincidence

that the Phillies went on the greatest run in their long, mostly woebegone history, from 2007-2011, when Howard was in the heart of those lineups.

Howard missed most of 2012 and 2013 and those

were the worst seasons since the hulking slugger emerged in 2005.

We recently sat down for a one-on-one with the player the Phillies need most to approximate what he was, a historic run producer.

When you won the Rookie of the Year in 2005 and the NL MVP in 2006, you were off the plate more than you have been

Ryan Howard has battled

some big injuries recently.

• Howard tore his Achil-les making the last out of the 2011 NLDS.

• He was sidelined with a torn meniscus in July 2013. He was hitting .266, with 11 homers.

over the last few seasons. Have you considered moving back off the plate?Yes. I’ve actually moved back off the plate. That’s something I’m doing during spring training. It’s a work in progress. I’m trying to get used to the distance. I like how it feels.

Did you do this after watching video?Yes. Absolutely. I think I would be more effective.

That way you won’t get tied up by lefties and you have long enough arms to cover the plate and extend those arms.I really want to extend my arms. That’s something I need to give myself a chance to do and moving off the plate will definitely help that.

Is there another approach you’re taking, such as possibly being more selective? It’s all going to depend on the situation. There will be times when I’ll try to swing early in the count. They’ll be times up there when I’ll take pitches. But I don’t want to ever not be aggressive. I’m going to be aggressive, even though I’ve shortened my swing. I’m going to try and hit the ball hard somewhere.

You lost weight and put on muscle.I needed to do that. I have a lot of responsibility. This team is counting on me.

How are your legs?Much better. It’s huge to have my legs under me. I didn’t have that the last couple of seasons. But this year, the legs are back.

Somehow you managed to drive in 56 runs in 71 games in 2012 on one leg. How did you do that?I drive in runs. That’s my

Howard is hopeful

Howard thinks Phillies can contend in 2014

Most experts don’t have the Phillies in the running for a playoff berth. Do you use that as motivation? We can use that as motiva-tion, as a chip on our shoul-der. I’m sure some of us will do just that.

Are people underestimating this team?I think they are and they can do that all that they want. I wouldn’t judge us where we are now in spring training. We’re a work in progress. I have a feeling we’re not going to be on all cylinders until toward the end of March. We’re aiming for being ready March 31 in Texas. My mom once told

me that anyone can beat anyone on any given day. I believe we can beat anyone in the league. We just need to stay healthy and get it going.

What do people not know about this team? That we get along great. We’re feeling really good together. We haven’t felt good as a team in about two years. I really like the

guys who joined our team like (Marlon) Byrd-man and (A.J.) Burnett. Our combi-nation of talent and how we get along is going to be an awesome combina-tion. You’ll see. Let’s talk in about a month and a half and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

You’re a historic run producer. You have had three 140 plus RBI seasons. You’re going to pass the 1,000 RBI mark this season. Do you believe you get enough appreciation from Phillies fans? The fans have been great. You can’t please everybody. What I can do is focus on what I can do on the field. But if you take a look at my body of work, it’s pretty good. I know when I retire I’ll be able to say I left it all out there on the field. I gave it all I had.

The Sixers are a laughing stock. They have gone through 19 players dur-ing their franchise-long 21-game losing streak and have all but locked up the most pingpong balls in the NBA draft lot-tery.

So isn’t it time they regain a little respect by winning a game?

The team is five losses away from tying the all-time NBA record for con-secutive losses, set by the Cleveland Cavaliers just a few seasons ago.

“We try to come with a positive attitude and give people opportuni-ties every day,” an opti-mistic Brett Brown told the media after a loss in Indiana Monday. “There is no ‘woe is me’ going

on around our program. I hope that they play off of my staff and feel me out, because that’s the mes-sage I’m trying to day-to-day send.”

They face the playoff-bound Bulls Wednesday night at the Wells Fargo Center, and then the Knicks at home Friday.

If Philadelphia can’t win one of their next two games, they might not win again until next Oc-tober.

After two games at home this week, the Six-ers will try and earn their elusive first win since January in Chicago, San Antonio and Houston next week.

25SPORTS

No. 2

Spurs (50-16)Make it 10 straight for the Spurs. Even more impres-sive is that nine of those wins were games in which their opponent lost by three possessions.

NBA power rankings | by James Toscano

No. 1

Clippers(48-20)A loss in Denver snapped the Clippers’ win streak at 11 games, but few are worried in and around the Staples Center. Blake Griffi n and Matt Barnes, in particular, have really stepped up their play lately and Los Angeles will march on. They have the Pistons and Bucks coming up, so they should get right back on track.

No. 3

Thunder (49-18)With a win over the Bulls on Monday night, Kevin Durant extended his streak of 25 or more points to 32. Michael Jordan posted 40 in a row in the 1986-87 season.

No. 4

Rockets (45-22)After three convincing wins the Rockets lost all three of their games on the road to the Thunder, Bulls and Heat. That will knock you down a peg.

No. 5

Pacers(50-17)Don’t let the Pacers’ four game win streak fool you. The victories came against the Celtics, Sixers (twice) and Pistons. It gets harder Friday vs. Chicago.

No. 6

Heat (45-19)They’ve lost fi ve of their last seven games and have two sets of back-to-backs over the next fi ve days. Don’t expect them to push it too hard.

No. 7

Warriors (42-26)Gotta hand it to the War-riors for going into Portland and coming out the one-point victors on Sunday. Steph Curry and Klay Thompson combined for 64 points in the win.

No. 8

Blazers (43-24)At 2-6 over their last eight games, the Blazers have hit a rough patch. They’ve got a bunch of winnable games on the horizon, however.

No. 9

Grizzlies(39-27)All eyes on Friday and Saturday, when the Griz travel to Miami, then back to Memphis for a game vs. the Pacers. That’s one tough back-to-back.

No. 10

Mavericks(41-27) San Antonio aside, the Mavericks have the longest win streak in the West ... at three games. It’s a testament to how tough the conference is.
