Internet Week‘s Webu-tante Ball, which happens tonight at Marquee, is well-known for being one of New York’s biggest tech parties, but it also functions as the perfect pickup spot for Silicon Alley singles.

Founder Richard Blake-ley said unlike other male-dominated tech events, the Ball’s gender ratio is even.

“Most tech parties in New York are after-work drinks at a bar where you come with your laptop on your back, sweating, and stand awkwardly in a cor-

ner with a bunch of other guys,” said Blakeley.

But at the Webutante Ball, tech scenesters dress in tuxedos and cocktail dresses. Add a DJ and free-flowing booze and it’s no surprise that the party be-comes a hot spot for young people in tech looking to exchange phone numbers — and not just to network.

Lisa Besserman moved to Argentina in 2012 to found Startup Buenos Ai-res, but that hasn’t stopped her from attending every Webutante Ball since 2009.

“I was single for the first couple of them and I always walked away with a few numbers,” she said.

Graphic designer Nick McGlynn admitted to get-ting lucky at a Webutante Ball. “It’s a prom for tech

nerds, and I mean, what better place to hook up than at a prom?” he asked.

At least one couple is walking down the aisle thanks to the geek chic bash. “I famously intro-duced two very unlikely people to each other at a Webutante Ball — and they are getting married,” said journalist Julia Allison.

Every Webutante Ball features a king and queen, and couples are encour-aged to strike prom poses in their photos.

Alison Flood, director of

business development at ICED Media, helped orga-nize the 2010 Webutante Ball, but couldn’t flirt be-cause of some game-killing guests: her parents.

“I’m not bringing my dad this year, so who knows what can happen? It’s anyone’s game,” she said.

Tickets are available at TheWebutanteBall.com, but not at the door.

Court. Prosecutors say thousands of documents incriminate Grimm Embattled Congressman Michael Grimm made his first appearance in a Brooklyn court on Monday since he was indicted in late April with perjury and tax fraud charges.

Grimm sat in court while prosecutors dis-closed that they have some 7,000 pages of documents and 8,000 emails as evi-dence against him.

The next hearing is scheduled for July 21.

Last month, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York unsealed a 20-count indictment on charges for mail, wire and health care fraud, as well as filing false tax returns, perjury, and obstruction of an official proceeding and employing unauthorized immigrants.

“We’re going to fight tooth and nail until I am fully exonerated,” Grimm said shortly after the in-dictment was revealed.

He gave no comment to the press after Monday’s hearing.

Grimm represents Staten Island and parts of Brooklyn and is up for re-election this fall. CHESTER JESUS SORIA Rep. Michael Grimm appeared in Court on Monday. / GETTY IMAGES

Trial

Occupy protester sentenced for assaulting cop An Occupy Wall Street protester convicted of assaulting a police offi-cer during a demonstra-tion was sentenced on Monday to a 90-day jail sentence.

A jury on May 5 found Cecily McMillan guilty of elbowing a police officer, Grantley Bovell, in the eye as he was attempting to arrest her.

McMillan, 25, was arrested along with scores of others on March 17, 2012 at a demonstration marking the protest movement’s six-month anniversary in New York City.

McMillan’s lawyer argued his client was reacting to someone groping one of her breasts, according to accounts of the trial. Prosecutors said that claim was a fabrication.

The 90-day sentence, followed by five years’ probation, was handed down by New York State Court Justice Ron-ald Zweibel. McMillan had faced a potential sentence of as much as seven years in prison. REUTERS

After missing a year due to sequestration, Fleet Week has returned to New York. Now in its 26th year, the an-nual celebration of military sea services embraces its mission of lighting up the city that never sleeps with military band concerts, aer-ial demonstrations, sports tournaments, parades and showcases of the latest maritime technology.

As always, the public is invited for guided tours of docked ships. This year,

three U.S. Navy and two U.S. Coast Guard vessels are open, including the Harp-ers Ferry-class dock landing USS Oak Hill, the “keeper of New York Harbor” cut-ter Katherine Walker and the guided-missile cruiser USS Cole, which gained no-toriety during the suicide attack in October 2000 that killed 17 U.S. Navy crew members and injured 39.

Festivities kicked off Monday in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, where the 45-person Navy Band Northeast “Pops Ensem-ble” performed pop, jazz and patriotic favorites. Today, they cross the Hudson to Manhattan for an afternoon performance in Bryant Park.

A solemn re-enlistment and promotion ceremony takes place at the 9/11

Memorial & Museum on Friday, the first day it’s open to the public. This year’s ceremony commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address at the Soldiers and Sailors Monu-ment on Riverside Drive.

The Navy’s most valu-able resource, its service men and women, num-bering near 1,500 this year, also get some well-deserved R & R. For many, Fleet Week marks a return home; for others, it’s a highly anticipated first visit to the city of legend.

Metro asked eight ser-vice members to share what they’re looking for-ward to seeing and doing this week in NYC.

Land, ho! Celebrate those who serve our country by visiting an event, touring a ship or just saying hello.

Officers responding to a call about a stabbing on Sunday shot and killed a man who allegedly lunged at them.

Two NYPD officers rushed to 60 Clarkson Ave. after they received a call that a woman had been stabbed in Flatbush.

Cops arrived at the building at 10:30 p.m. where they found the victim bleeding from the shoulder in the lobby be-fore going to the second floor, where they found the suspected assailant.

Once inside the apart-

ment, the 39-year-old male charged the officers with scissors in hand, according to cops.

Authorities said the officers then pulled out their guns and shot the suspect, striking the man’s hand and torso and killing him at the scene.

EMS took the victim to Kings County Hospital Center, where she was listed as in stable condi-tion. The officers were taken to Maimonides Medical Center and treated for tinnitus. CHESTER JESUS SORIA

Authorities bust drug ring traffi cking heroin

Police and federal agents intercepted more than 50 pounds of heroin and 20 pounds of cocaine, busting a drug ring that supplied what authorities described as the source for massive amounts of heroin sold throughout the northeast.

Investigators made the bust last week mid-delivery between the Bronx and Connecticut, where police said the heroin has double its street value.

The confiscated heroin is thought to be worth $11 million.

Two men were arrested in connection to the ring: Edualin Tapia and Guill-

ermo Esteban Margarin, who were seen entering an apartment off Orloff Ave-nue in the Bronx suspected of being a heroin mill.

On May 16, the two men drove to Hartford, Connecticut, with nearly 22 pounds of the heroin and walked into an apart-ment with another box of nearly 29 pounds of heroin.

A joint task force of federal Drug Enforcement Agency officers, NYPD detectives and New york State police investigators entered the apartment while the suspects pre-pared to dump a white sub-stance down a sink.

Both men were charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance and conspiracy. They are being detained in Connecticut pending extradition.

Score. The drug ring was carrying heroin between New York City and Connecticut.

Ground zero

“These seizures and arrests demonstrate that NYC is ground zero of heroin distribution networks supplying the northeast, as well as being the prime market Mexican drug traffi ckers are using to earn profi t from the sale of poison.” DEA Special Agent James J. Hunt

Hacking. US accuses China of cyber spying A U.S. grand jury has indicted five Chinese military officers on charges of hacking American companies and stealing trade secrets, the toughest action taken by Washington so far to address cyber spying by China.

China denied the charges, saying they were “made up” and would

damage trust between the two nations. The Chinese foreign ministry said it would suspend the activities of the Sino-U.S. Internet working group.

The indictments mark the first time the United States has filed charges against specific officials of foreign governments, accusing them of corpo-rate cyber spying. REUTERS

“Selfie,” “tweep” and “turducken” were among more than 150 new words and definitions added to the 2014 updated Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, the publishing company said on Monday.

The additions to the U.S. dictionary reflect the growing influence of tech-nology and social network-ing, the company said.

“So many of these new words show the impact of online connectivity to our lives and livelihoods,” Pe-ter Sokolowski, an editor for Merriam-Webster said in a statement. “Tweep, selfie and hashtag refer to the ways we communicate and share as individuals. Words such as crowdfund-ing, gamification and big data show that the Inter-net has changed business in profound ways.”

One new entry is “steampunk,” defined as “science fiction dealing with 19th-century societies

dominated by historical or imagined steam-powered technology.”

And the word “catfish” takes on an added defini-tion, referring to a person who sets up a false social networking profile for deceptive purposes.

“These are words our editors have decided to put in based on usage in the English language,” said Merriam-Webster spokes-woman Meghan Lunghi. “They look for widespread, sustained usage — and when they think the usage merits it, they include it.” REUTERS

Deal

AT&T bets on video with $48.5 billion DirecTV bid AT&T Inc. plans to pay $48.5 billion to buy DirecTV, in the latest sign that the wireless industry and the U.S. television market are set to converge as custom-ers consume more video on their mobile devices.

The deal highlights AT&T’s pressing need for fresh avenues of growth beyond the maturing U.S. cellular business, which has become in-creasingly competitive.

The combination with DirecTV, the No. 1 U.S. satellite TV provider with 20 mil-lion customers, would beef up Dallas-based AT&T’s packages of cellular, broadband, TV and fi xed-line phone services.

For DirecTV, the deal will enable it to off er broadband Internet for the fi rst time to its U.S. customers. REUTERS

Kremlin says again

Putin has ordered troops from Ukraine

The Kremlin announced on Monday that Presi-dent Vladimir Putin had ordered Russian forces near Ukraine back to their bases, but NATO and the United States said they saw no sign of a pullback and Moscow had failed to carry out such promises before.

Moscow has massed tens of thousands of troops near the border regions where pro-Russian separatists have declared independent states, and Kiev and its Western allies fear they could be used to invade in support of the rebels.

Ukraine holds a presidential election on Sunday, which Western countries consider a crucial event in resolving the country’s crisis. The United States and EU have threatened to ramp up sanctions on Moscow if it interferes in the vote.REUTERS

Former IMF chief Domi-nique Strauss-Kahn has instructed lawyers to sue the makers of a movie in which veteran French star Gerard Depardieu plays a sex addict who commits a sexual assault on a hotel maid, his law-yer said on Monday.

“Welcome to New York” by Abel Ferrara, which had a private screening on the sidelines of the Cannes film festival at the weekend and has

been on pay-per-view in France, is billed as a piece of fiction and comes with a legal disclaimer.

But Strauss-Kahn’s lawyer said the film was defamatory in that its subject matter was similar to the accusations leveled against Strauss-Kahn, who quit the Washington-based International Monetary Fund in 2011 after a New York hotel maid accused him of sexual assault. REUTERS

Don’t i gnore monthly credit card statements

Verify that you made all purchases yourself, and report any unknown transactions to your bank as possible fraud. This is key to protecting yourself from any fraudulent use.

Money matters. C redit card mistakes most people make Misinformation has made our knowledge of credit cards a little muddy, and therefore, there are several common mistakes most credit card holders don’t know they’re mak-ing. Here are the top ones:

Closing old credit cardsMost think that once they pay off a credit card, it’s in their best interest to close it. Closing the card can impact your credit utiliza-tion ratio, however, which can negatively affect your credit score.

Applying for multiple cardsOpening new credit cards is one way to improve your credit scores because it adds to your total avail-able credit. That being said, applying for multiple credit cards at once could end up having the reverse

Maxing out credit cardsEven though there are circumstances when you may need to use most of your credit, it’s best to pay the balance as quickly as you can. If you don’t, it can have a negative im-pact on your credit scores. Similar to closing old credit cards, maxing out your credit cards raises your credit utilization ratio. JULIE MYHRE

Do this

Ask in person, not over email

Schedule a meeting with your professor so that you can talk about the schools you are applying to, your goals and why you want to go to grad school. Mak-ing a request for a recom-mendation over email or just after class can seem too casual and rushed.

Dodd adds that you

should also tell your pro-fessor why you would like a recommendation from him or her specifi cally.

“Saying something such as, ‘I think that as a student, you really saw me as a writer,’ lets the profes-sor know why you’re mak-ing the request,” she says.

Getting the right professor to recommend you

If you worked closely with a professor, he or she could be the one to write your letter. / PIXLAND

Thinking about applying to grad school this fall? Now is the perfect time to start thinking about which professors you would like to ask for recom-mendation letters. These simple steps can make the entire process easier for everyone.

1Ask someone who knows you well: “My

biggest tip is ‘Make sure the professor really knows

you,’” says Julie Dodd, a journalism professor at the University of Florida who often blogs about jobs and internships.

Dodd also points out, “You are kind of audi-tioning [for the recom-mendation] while you are in class.”

Make it a point to talk to your instructor about your other interests; don’t be shy about mentioning your extracurriculars or your work-study positions.

Dodd recently recom-mended a student who had taken a class with her while he was a sopho-more, yet made it a point to regularly stop by her office for two years after-ward. When he asked her for a job recommendation, “I was really invested in

him,” she says. “I wanted him to get a job.”

2Ask as early as possibleGive at least a month’s

notice before your dead-line, says Dodd, though earlier is always better. Keep in mind also that lots of students are also asking for letters and that the deadlines are all at the same time.

3Take no for an answer If a professor tells you

that he or she isn’t the best person to write your letter, believe him or her and move on.

4Provide all of the information they need

Make a folder with a copy of your résumé, a list of all the programs you’re

applying to and note all the classes you took with the professor, listing each semester.

5Remember that you are asking for a favor

Ask nicely and send a thank-you note afterward. (Also, be sure to let your instructor know which school you picked; don’t leave them wondering.)

College. Here’s how to make the recommendation process go as smoothly as possible.

21 Talking points

Thicke still wants his wife back

Robin Thicke also made a statement while he ac-cepted a Billboard Award for “Blurred Lines.” “Most importantly, I’d like to thank my wife for her love and support, and for putting up with me all these years,” he said. The same night he performed a new song called “Get Her Back,” he also dedi-cated it to his soon-to-be ex-wife, Paula Patton. But Paula, seriously, can’t you just take him back already, so the rest of us don’t have to watch him

try so hard? It gets pretty tiring.

Timberlake hates Donald Sterling, too

Just like everyone else in the entire world, Justin Timberlake is not very fond of Donald Sterling. He made that very clear Sunday night when he accepted a Top Artist Bill-board Award via satellite. “I want to thank everyone on Earth, except Donald Sterling.” We want to thank you, Justin, for be-ing awesome!

Thicke’s “Get Her Back” is quite likely about Paula Patton.

An SAT question: If 5 Seconds of Summer, pictured here, fl ash two fi ngers, will they be 7 Seconds, or will they still be confused with One Direction? / ALL PHOTOS GETTY IMAGES

Who are 5 Seconds of Summer?

By now, everyone knows Kendall Jenner flubbed her lines at the Billboard Music Awards and almost introduced 5 Seconds of Summer as One Direction. But can you blame her? I mean, there are five guys in 1D and only four guys in 5 Seconds! Here’s a primer for Kendall, if she’s reading: 5 Seconds of Summer, also known as 5SOS, are an Aussie band whose

members range in age from 18 to 20. They aren’t the singing and dancing type of boy band; these dudes rock out! And the catchy lyrics to their sin-gle, “She Looks So Perfect,” could be confused with 1D’s “What Makes You Beautiful,” if it didn’t have

a refrain about American

Apparel under-wear.

Can’t make it to the drive-in? Invite Amber Rose over! Amber Rose (remind me, why is she famous?) wore what looked like a fl at screen TV as shades for the Billboard Music Awards Sunday night. Looking at her makes me want to eat popcorn while watching a chick fl ick on those shades. Maybe that could be a way for her to get into the movie biz. If you can’t be on the screen, then be the screen! Just saying.

Best-selling author Em-ily Giffin is known for telling a good love story. Whether it’s about falling for a best friend’s fiance in “Something Borrowed” or the gnawing feeling of wondering “what if” about someone you let go long ago in “Love The One You’re With,” Giffin has made a career of explor-ing the complications of love and lust. Her new book, “The One & Only” is no exception. We got Gif-fin to spill details, plus she tells us what she really thinks about love.

The setting for “The One & Only” is completely diff erent from your past books. How did you get into the sports culture of Texas?I have been passionate about college athletics since I was a little girl and there are few worlds more colorful than Texas foot-ball. I actually spent some time in Dallas and visited SMU’s spring training. I also had several coaches, including Hall-of-Famer Jim Boeheim, read early drafts to make sure that the character of Coach Clive Carr and the story, particularly the NCAA-investigation subplot, felt authentic. That being said, the sports background is just the setting for the story, which, at its core, is centered on a young wom-an dealing with difficult, important life choices and the unresolved feelings that ultimately complicate them. You don’t need to love football to enjoy this book, any more than you have to love boxing to watch “Rocky.”

of course, friendships. Friendships are integral to who we are as people — and I think they are particularly important to women. But even our closest friendships can be complicated and layered. The simple, easy ones aren’t always the most worthwhile ones.

What is a real-life love story you love?

Kate and William. I believe in their sweet happily ever after. But the pretty, fairy tale ones aren’t the only ones I’m drawn to. I think there is great beauty in relation-ships that go through really rough, dark times — and still survive.

EMILY GIFFIN The best-selling author spills about her new book, plus debates fi ctional love stories versus real ones.

THE AUTHOR’S REAL THOUGHTS ON LOVE

How did the idea for the book come to you initially? All of my books generally begin with a core theme or idea. For “The One & Only,” I wanted to explore the idea of unconventional love. I think if we’re hon-est, the way most of us think about romantic love is pretty narrowly defined, and there’s a tendency for us to dismiss, or at least feel uncomfortable with, anything outside of those

seemingly impossible love. Do you believe love conquers all in real life? This is definitely the “big question” in the book, and I’m really happy with the way “The One & Only” ended — it felt right for the characters and true to the story as a whole. But what happens in the book is just that. ... a conclusion to one fictional story and not necessarily a reflection of my personal beliefs. Honestly, I’m not really

definitions. With this story, I really wanted to portray a relationship that, while difficult for some to understand and accept at first, is beautiful and idyl-lic in its own right. I also wanted to consider the question of whether true love can really conquer all, especially in the face of judgment and scrutiny from those outside of it.

Without giving anything away, your books have a common theme of

sure whether love can conquer all in real life. ... I like to believe it can!

The intricacies of female friendships are something else you write a lot about in your books, and this one is no exception. Why are adding these types of relationships to your stories important to you?My books are all relation-ship-driven. I write about mothers and daughters, husbands and wives and,

Repertoire. There are so many Fassbinder fi lms for one to see Rainer Werner Fassbinder isn’t the most prolific filmmaker there ever was, but over 40 films in under about 14 years is nothing to sneeze at. The filmography of the German filmmaker, who died after ingesting a toxic drug cocktail at only 37, is tough to surmount, not only due to volume, but because of how bleak and rigorous his vision is. His films relentlessly explored sadism; his world view could be summed up in the title of his debut, 1969’s “Love is Colder Than Death.”

Through June 1, Lincoln Center will burn through part one of their complete Fassbinder retro-spective. (Part two begins in November.) Tonight

Win or lose, what are you walking away with?

“The fi rst time I walked on that stage, I was already a winner along with everyone else. Win or lose, I walk away with a chin held high, a good conscience and everything I learned in every vocal lesson.” WORTHINGTON

“I’ve learned that if you set your mind to something and pursue it,

it will eventually pay off .” KAUFMAN

“The greatest reward for me has been inspiring people. Despite the challenges I might face as an artist, it motivates me to see that other people are impacted by my music. I feel like I’ve been called to do this, and I don’t want to do anything else.” GRIMMIE

Singing

The heat is on as “The Voice” comes to a close. We caught up with the last artists standing as they pre-pared to sing their hearts out for the competition’s finale.

Christina Grimmie, the 21-year-old pop singer, left her hometown in South Jersey to follow her dreams in Los Angeles. Grimmie began her music career on YouTube and now has over 2 million subscribers. The YouTube sensation got all four chairs to turn and went with Team Adam.

“I have been busier than ever before and my memo-ry has gotten a lot better too because we have to memorize a song a week,”

Interview. “The Voice” fi nalists share their journeys to the singing competition’s big fi nale.

Grimmie tells us. “[But] the biggest challenge for me is being away from my fam-ily. We got to go home for a week after the Blinds, but now we stay here to work on the show.”

Josh Kaufman, the fam-ily man from Indianapolis, supported his wife and three kids as an SAT prep tutor and band member playing local gigs. The soul singer got all four chairs to turn in the Blinds and originally went with Team Adam, but was later stolen by Usher. Kaufman hopes that winning “The Voice” will allow him to support his family as a full-time musician.

“Usher has a unique coaching style,” says Kaufman. “He has me run around the stage before rehearsal and sometimes he’ll have me sing in the mirror. But he’s a really good communicator.”

Jake Worthington, the country kid from Texas, discovered his passion for music after a terrible foot-

Early in your career you were in the 1969 fi lm of “True Grit.” What was John Wayne like?Somebody said we didn’t get along. That’s not true at all. We got along. It was the director [Henry Hatha-way]. He said to an actor, “When I say ‘action,’ tense up, goddammit!” Can you imagine your boss telling you that? It’s crazy. It’s the opposite of what you should say.

In his opinion

What was Marlon Brando like on “The Godfather”?This might sound like heresy to some: More right for “The Godfa-ther,” that part, was the guy who starred in “The Sopranos.” [James Gandolfi ni] was more willing to play the pr—. Brando was more heroic. On the second day of fi lming, there was a makeup guy who came in the dressing room, saying, “He’s playing this like a kindly old uncle.” He was more romantic. But Brando was wonderful to work with. His scene with Al Pacino, he had a big sign in a tree. He was reading his lines. [Laughs] He was a master at reading those lines all over the place.

ROBERT DUVALL’S LATEST FILM IS THE SEMI-WESTERN

“A NIGHT IN OLD MEXICO.” WIREIMAGE

Robert Duvall may be 82, but you wouldn’t know it. He’s still energetic, personable and not afraid to speak his mind. He’s promoting his new film, “A Night in Old Mexico,” in which he plays an old-timer whose land has been taken from him by a com-pany. Instead of moping, he heads out on the town with the grandson (Jeremy Irvine) he has just met.

This screenplay was written 25 years ago.Bill Wittliff wrote it. He wrote the screen adapta-tion for “Lonesome Dove,” but he had written this as an original screenplay be-fore. So when we finished “Lonesome Dove,” he said, “Let’s go do this.” I said, “It’s too soon. [Laughs] I’ve got to get a little older first.

What drew you to this character? He was just a nice charac-ter. He’s a good character — a real Texas character that Whitliff understands. He’s like a descendent of the guys from “Lonesome Dove.”

Some have said that you like to say in character during production.Nah. I mean, some of it sticks with you. But to stay in character all day long,

that would be too labori-ous. Tiresome. It’s a game, like kids playing house. It’s adults playing house for money. It’s make-believe.

You went to a New York theater school at the same time as Dustin Hoff man, Gene Hackman and James Caan. Do you still hang out with them often? No, no. I don’t see most of those guys. The country’s so big. One guy I keep up with is Jimmy Caan. Periodically I see Wilford Brimley. He used to be a bodyguard for Howard Hughes. Interesting guy. He sings jazz with a band. He sings very well. He puts out albums. You put them on and people go, “That’s not Mel Torme. Who is it?” I say, “It’s Wilford Brimley.”

Interview. Robert Duvall is as rambunctious in real life as he is in “A Night in Old Mexico.”

Interview. Griffi n Dunne leads the ‘The Discoverers’ Griffin Dunne was the star and producer of one of the definitive views of scary old pre-Giuliani New York: Martin Scorsese’s “After Hours” from 1985, in which he plays a data pro-cessor who heads to SoHo for a date and winds up almost being murdered by an angry mob. That would never happen today.

“You could lie down in the street and sleep there now,” Dunne says of the neighborhood, now perpetually mobbed by clothes-hungry tourists. He says he was recently looking at a SoHo building only to belatedly realize it was one of the key sets in that film. “It’s changed so much. A spooky loft is now a Gap or a Timberland.”

“After Hours,” regret-tably, has been one of only a few times Dunne has played lead. He does it again in the serio-comic indie “The Discoverers,” in which he portrays a historian forced to drag his two kids to a historical recreation camp to rescue his grieving father.

Dunne has done his share of supporting work; most recently, he was in “Dallas Buyers Club.” But this role is more than just a change of pace. “It’s great to have a sense of continuity with a character,” he says. “With [supporting roles], you do your part in four days or whatever it is. You’re a needle dropped into a

production already mov-ing before you and will go on after you leave.”

The role is reminis-cent of his “After Hours” character: the exasperated glutton for punishment, although he feels this one is more mature.

“That comes from having a guy who’s an aca-demic in that small world, who’s written a book that is intellectual and overly long in a culture where there are popular history books,” he says. “Being a filmmaker in a changing medium wasn’t that big a leap for me. I could draw on that fear of being older and out-of-date and having to reinvent yourself to keep moving forward.” MATT PRIGGE

Lucky star

With the Material Girl In 1987, Dunne co-starred with Madonna in “Who’s That Girl.” “She was hilarious and had an incredibly great take on the insanity around her,” he says. In fact, it was unusual for him to be near the center of the madness. “At one point, we were shooting on 5th Avenue the same day as the Marathon. We were near the fi nish line. And these people would be right at the fi nish line, but they’d give up to watch Madonna.”

Island life. Take in what Costa Rica has to off er at this chic new resort.

Say the word “resort” to your chicest jet-setting friend, and he or she will probably scoff. And an eye roll might be apt as well — a typical tropical beach

ald Zurcher and is decorat-ed with the work of local artist Salvador Odre.

The resort’s private beach offers activities such as top-notch paddle-boarding, kayaking and snorkeling.

The staff at Andaz Pen-insula Papagayo take pride in where they work; the beautiful Culebra Bay and its surrounding rainforest are the focal point of the hotel’s decor rather than a side note. Everything is open — the rooms, the dining areas, the walk-ways between rooms and the path to the beach all let you experience para-dise. And if it’s not open, it’s enclosed in clear glass. With the resort’s open concept, you can take in monkeys chattering in the background as well as the sweet smell of the rich earth. It was especially nice to see open-air spac-es utilized in the hotel’s Onda Spa, where trained masseuses work out the kinks while a natural

breeze tickles your back. The same philosophy is

applied to the chic, modern hotel rooms, which encour-age you to shower with the glass door open so you are one with nature, rather than shut off from it.

When you sit to dine at any of the property’s three restaurants, you’re encouraged to be outside. Over tapas at Chao Pescao, you can sip on artisanal cocktails on the deck while vines sway above you. At the more fine-dining res-taurant, Ostra, the walls are open so you are always looking out to the sea. Ca-sual dining spot Rio Bhon-go is surrounded by an in-finity pool and bay breezes.

And instead of the trees being stripped and paved for your walk down to the private beach, you nimbly meander through the jun-gle. This resort is paradise, experienced.

resort can bring to mind an ecological eyesore with no direct connection to the paradise or its inhabitants. It’s the place where the locals who work there are forced into Hawaiian shirts while they sling frozen drinks to pale visitors nosh-ing on chicken tenders by the pool.

However, there is a sea change occurring in the realm of resorts: Smart hotel chains have realized that their savvy, informed customers are rebelling against homogenous expe-riences. Enter the Andaz boutique chain, a subsid-iary of Hyatt. Andaz works with the community, us-ing local architects, art-ists and chefs to fashion their hotels and cuisine to make for a more authen-tic experience, while also retaining the element of luxury and familiarity that Hyatt guests expect. Andaz bears little resemblance to a behemoth resort chain whose lone architectural or stylistic distinction is the fact that it could be anywhere.

The latest Andaz prop-erty to enter the travel mar-ket is the Andaz Peninsula Papagayo, nestled between the Gulf of Papagayo and the blue waters of Culebra Bay in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. It was designed by Costa Rican architect Ron-

Advice. One mom makes the case for an older, time-tested and approved parenting style

Are these old-fashioned parenting tips the secret to domestic bliss? GETTY IMAGES

Endless pressure to check off items on a lengthy list of short-term goals is the hallmark of modern par-enting. Therefore, it has to go — we need to go retro. Retro parenting doesn’t refer to the trend of opting out of the workforce and going strictly domestic; it means standing firm against modern parent-ing pressure without the reassurance of immediate results.

This is no easy task when it feels like you’re risking your kid’s entire future if he or she fails to score 100 percent on a spelling test or misses a ballet class. Moms need to resolve to think in the long term and resist the clamor to pile more activities into kids’ schedules. Resolve to ignore the disapprov-ing raised eyebrow when someone learns you give your kids chores rather than flashcard drills.

Because a sense of humor helps when go-ing against the status

quo, check out “The Three Martini Playdate.” Although the book’s tone is tongue-in-cheek, it offers advice for parents to teach children practical skills actually required for adult-hood, such as manners, cooperation, chores and, in keeping with the title, cocktail-making for adults.

The original retro-par-enting work, “The Hurried

Child” is also a worthwhile read. Among other things, David Elkind counseled against the full schedules of enrichment activities that parents push on their children to build up their college application résu-més. A résumé of boutique experiences probably doesn’t teach the child much about real life and likely fails to impress these

days anyway. The modern standout application for college comes from the kid who built a summer lawn-mowing business or babysitting service.

Constant accomplish-ment-reaching can make us feel like successful parents, but these books show you how slow down and parent with sub-stance. LESLIE LOFTIS

On their own

Because how-tos help, I recommend “Under Pressure” or “The New Six Point Plan for Rais-ing Happy, Healthy Chil-dren.” These books build on the foundation that we need to let children own their successes and their failures. The fi rst book mostly explains the research, and the second is loaded with practical advice.

33LETTERS & GAMES

Letters

Downstream detrimentsRe: ‘Salmoning is safer for cyclists’ (Metro, May 16-18) I couldn’t agree more with letter writer Jack Dickenson. As a young child fi rst learning to navigate the streets of a small town on my bicycle, I was taught by my dad that you always ride your bicycle AGAINST the traffi c! I want to see what’s coming at me and if it’s an out-of-control vehicle (for whatever reason). I want to be able to ditch the bike and dive for my life! You ride with the traffi c and you’re a sitting duck! As for the disorderly conduct charge against Baldwin — the cops created the “problem” and shouldn’t have arrested him. He’s a star; he’s going to create a crowd no matter what. MICHELLE CALABRO, VIA EMAIL

IRS follows the lawRe: ‘Would Dems be OK with the IRS on their backs?’ (Metro, May 16-18) Why do you keep publishing letters that have clear misstatements of fact? Letter writer Ron Shelton seems to think that the IRS only reviewed right-wing applications. Not true at all. Many progressives were also re-viewed, but Rep. Issa ONLY complained about the Tea Party ones. Also, the progressives want clear and open rules, while the Republicans want special deals. KEVIN DOWD, VIA EMAIL

Find video and recap of last night’s

Rangers-Canadiens Game 2 at:

Metro.us/sports.

The story leading up to Game 2 focused on the man in net for the Cana-diens. But the Rangers’ All-Star goaltender stole the headlines coming out of Game 2.

Henrik Lundqvist made 40 stops as the Rangers beat Montreal, 3-1, to take a commanding 2-0 series lead in the Eastern Confer-ence finals.

Carey Price was ruled out of net for the remain-der of the series for the Canadiens, with Dustin

Tokarski getting the start. Tokarski was effective, if not remarkable.

The Canadiens were the aggressors early on, with Max Pacioretty giving them the early lead after chest bumping the puck into the net off a bad clear-ance by Lundqvist.

But Ryan McDonagh answered back 17 seconds later when his slapshot deflected off a defender to even the score. Rick Nash scored the go-ahead goal with 1:02 left in the first.

Martin St. Louis, a day after his mother’s funeral, netted a goal in the second period to make it 3-1.

The schedule

• Game 1: Rangers 7, Canadiens 2

• Game 2: Rangers 3, Canadiens 1

• Game 3: at Rangers, Thursday, 8 p.m., NBCSN

• Game 4: at Rangers, May 25, 8 p.m., NBCSN

• Game 5: at Canadiens, May 27, 8 p.m., NBCSN

• Game 6: at Rangers, May 29, 8 p.m., NBCSN

• Game 7: at Canadiens, May 31, 8 p.m., NBCSN

By the numbers

5-1The Rangers are 5-1 since Chris Kreider returned to the lineup fol-lowing a broken hand. He has fi ve points (two goals, three assists).

41The Rangers power play is 7-for-17 (41 percent) since Game 4 against Pittsburgh. The power play was on a 0-for-36 streak entering that game.

It’s common to see an NFL player with a tattoo — in fact it’s a rare thing to see a player who isn’t inked up. But Jets seventh-round pick Trevor Reilly’s one and only tattoo is a matter of necessity.

Married since Sept. 4, 2011, Reilly recently got a tattoo of his wife’s initials on his left hand where his wedding band would go. The letters “JKR” for Jessica Kristie Reilly are promi-nent — a necessity because of his own absent-minded ways, he says. Turns out, he misplaced his wedding ring on more than one oc-casion.

“This is so I don’t have to wear a ring anymore, I got my wife’s initials,” Reilly said. “I’ve been against tattoos my whole life, but [I] started losing wedding rings.”

But the number of times he’s lost his ring is the shocking part.

“Five, and I bent one one time because I forgot to take it off. I told my wife, ‘I’m getting tatted up,’ and she said, ‘Fine by me,’ ”

Reilly said. “I told her be-fore I got married, ‘Don’t buy anything nice.’ She bought me some $50 ring. I said, ‘Perfect. I will prob-ably lose it.’ Three months later, it was gone. Then I went on eBay and started buying $3 rings.”

It is the latest chapter in the book of Reilly, a life full of ups and downs.

He lost his younger

brother in a motorcycle accident when both were younger. Then two years ago, his daughter Shayn was diagnosed with kidney cancer. Even though she is now in the clear, he admits it took a toll on him. He also played the entirety of the 2012 season for Utah on a torn ACL, an injury he said no longer impacts him.

After the first day of rookie minicamp on Fri-day, head coach Rex Ryan said Reilly “really fit the profile we’re looking for.”

Reilly was the last of 12 picks for the Jets in the May 8 NFL draft, but he is ready to step in and con-tribute right away, and he seems tailor-made for spe-cial teams. Ryan compared him to another Jets player who succeeded in that role, and even on defense.

“I’ve been impressed with him,” Ryan said. “He’s kind of got, like, Garrett McIntyre [in him]. [He’s] just a tough guy and just loves to play.”

And at age 26, after two years on a Mormon mission, he’s not your av-erage rookie.

“He’s a mature guy,” Ryan said. “As he told us all today, he was an All-America — honorable mention.”

NFL. After losing fi ve rings, Jets draft pick Trevor Reilly decided to just get his wife’s initials tattooed on him.

Reilly’s résumé

Reilly was a member of the

high school class of 2006,

but is getting to the NFL

four years later than most.

• The top player in Rivals.com’s high school class of 2006 was Percy Harvin, who’s played fi ve

NFL seasons already.

• Matthew Staff ord (No. 6) and Tim Tebow (No. 22) were also in Rivals’ top 25 recruits that year.

• Reilly originally committed to Texas Tech.

Coaching search

Reports: Knicks ‘open’ to Jackson, waiting to talk to Fisher

The Knicks coaching search goes on, with ESPN delivering dual reports on possible candidates.

President Phil Jackson is reportedly “open” to speaking to former Golden State coach Mark Jackson. The former Knicks point guard seems like a long shot, with no connection to Phil Jackson. Mark Jackson has already jumped back into the broadcast booth with ESPN for the remainder of the playoff s.

Another option, Derek Fisher, is tied up with playing in the Western Conference fi nals with the Thunder. Fisher, who played under Phil Jackson with the Lakers, hasn’t offi cially said he will retire after the season. But he does appear interested in coaching in the future.

ESPN reports Phil Jackson would at least like to speak to his for-mer pupil before hiring anyone else. METRO
