Tony on The MoonOgg gets sick

  • Tony lives at number 23 Railway Cuttings a smallterraced house backing onto an old redundantrailway line that was closed in the 1960 by the fatcontroller.

Tony worked for the railway until it closed as thechief assistant to the assistant station master. The station was a magnificent building and waslisted. Tony did not know where it was listed butit must be somewhere important as they werenot allowed to pull it down. He now worked parttime as caretaker and maintenance man at thestation.

The rooms in the station were now let out topeople for dancing classes, meeting rooms andnurseries. Although he was very proud of his jobpeople looked down on him as he swept paintedand mended things.

It was noisy and busy most of the time but notmany people talked to Tony.

    Page 1

  • Tony had been told someone famous once livedat 23 Railway Cuttings but it made no difference, with two large families on each side it was rathernoisy.

Tony liked it quiet, he built a shed at the bottomof the long garden where he made things, it wasquieter there. It was here that he started to buildhis space ship from an old wheelie bin and partshe picked up from the local scrap yard.

Tony started the project when he found an oldFlux Capacitor in the wreckage of a car that hadbeen hit by a train. The wreckage and beendumped in a corner of the scrap yard and theowner of the yard said he could have what heliked as it was all useless.

    Tony however thought otherwise.

    Page 2

  • Tony had tried to get the Government interestedin his spaceship, he had even written to NASA.

Nobody listened to him as he was not a professor,or a science boffin at some big laboratory.

One of Tonys few friends was Joe a reporterfrom the local newspaper. Joe had said he wouldwrite an article for the local paper but knew hiseditor would just laugh at him and he might loosehis job.

Tony fiddled away at his space ship. All hewanted was to become world famous earnbullions and zillions of pounds so he could buy asmall cottage somewhere quiet with lovely views.

Tony was really really fed up, he knew hisspaceship would work, well he was fairly sure itwould work.

    Page 3

  • When the spaceship was finished he decided heshould try it make sure everything did work as hethought it would.

Someone had to try it, it was all or nothing hemight vanish forever, or more likely sit outsidethe shed amid a lot of smoke and dust lookingrather silly. Rather than look silly in the daylightthe decided to wait for a really dark night.

So one dark night when the moon was shinningbrightly Tony decided to take his spaceship for itsfirst flight. He put on an old diving suit, it if keepswater out it will keep air in, he then climbed intothe driving seat pressed the button. Silentlyslowly the craft lifted into the air.

Tony held his breathe waiting for the big bang, orbits to start falling off or the flux capacitor tostop fluxing.

Nothing happened the space ship went higherand higher.

    Page 4

  • Tony had not intended to go to the moon. Notthen at least, not on his first flight, he hadnttaken any sandwiches or a flask of tea, buteverything was working so well and the moonlooked so close, so bright.

Like a moth to a flame Tony pushed theaccelerator and the moon grew bigger and bigger.

As the went the began to have a plan, he wouldland on the moon, pick up some rocks, dust andthings then bring them back to earth.

That would show everybody that he had been tothe moon and his spaceship really worked, people would listen to him then.

With only the slight worry about the fact that thathe had not yet worked out how to land the craft,Tony descended to the moons surface.

    Page 5

  • No one saw Tony as he left the earth, he didnudge a television satellite and sent it spinningaway, but it was only Sky television so no onenoticed.

Tony was spotted however traveling to the moonand as he got closer to the moon he found hiscontrols were not working, he was movingsideways very fast, too fast.

His craft was being drawn to a flashing pink light.Suddenly his spaceship flipped over and did aperfect soft landing next to the flashing pinklight. Tony got out and stood by the pink lightlooking down at it.

There was a knocking on the back of his helmet,Tony turned round and there was a Traffic Wardenwriting something in his notepad.

"Oh no! my first visit to the moon and I get aparking ticket." said Tony. No one could hear himhowever as he still had his diving helmet on.

    Page 6

  • The Traffic Warden seemed to be indicating thatTony should take his helmet off. As the wardenwas standing with no protection at all Tony tookhis helmet off, still however half expecting to besucked out into space and an agonising death.Which did not happen.

You are not going to give me a parking ticketare you. said Tony.

You are going to get a ticket. said the Warden . But only a residents ticket, Im from bordercontrol, we have to keep a check on whoscoming and going we dont want the place to gettoo busy. Its a nice quiet place at the momentand we want to keep it that way.

The Warden gave Tony a small back pack and anarm band telling him it was an Enviro unit, it kepta breathable air bubble three meters around thewearer and only needed recharging every sixmonths.Tony looked at the Warden then lookedup a the earth shinning in the sky, in a moment Iwill wake up he thought....

    Page 7

  • It turns out the moon is not the desolateunfriendly place that all the scientists tell us it is.A lot of people go there for a bit of peace andquiet away from all the hustle and bustle ofwhere they come from.

The Moon Warden took Tony to see a smallcottage he could rent. It was very cheap withterrific views and best of all very quiet.

The Warden read out some rules about living onthe moon. The First rule is you never talk aboutliving on the moon, the second rule is you nevertalk about living on the moon and third rule, leave your bin out on Wednesday afternoon forcollection.

As they went into the house Tony noticed a smallyellow bird near by. Whats that ? said Tony.

A Beaker bird. said the Warden. The cant flyas there is no air and no one know how theysurvive but they are very friendly. Houses havethere own Enviro unit so they like to comeinside. Page8

  • Tony likes living on the moon. Its is very nice andvery quiet and best of all no one says you areodd, or your inventions wont work or that theydont like your cat, or up here your Beaker bird.

It was a very nice cottage with a chimney, a placeto put a bicycle or spaceship and a lovely view ofthe stars through the window.

You could get nine hundred satellite televisionchannels (minus a few Sky channels that seemedto have gone off air) and three of the channelswere quite good. Best of all Tony loved sitting bythe fire looking at his home shopping catalogueand planning what little item to buy for thecrottage.

Tony would use his little spaceship to pop backdown to earth to do his care taking at the railwaystation, or pick things up from the local store. Hedid this late at night on bin day at RailwayCuttings, or when he knew the neighbors wereout.

    Page 9

  • It was by chance that this home shoppingcatalogue was to result in a rather unfortunateincident with one of Tonys little friends on theMoon called Ogg.

As we have said the Moon is not quite theunfriendly desolate place scientists try to makeout it is. So it was not long before Tony madefriends with some of the other people who hadgone there looking for a bit of peace and quiet.

One of these was Ogg, a small friendly littlecreature from the planet Blogg. Ogg was in theutility supply business, he supplied parcels offrozen electricity to the people who lived on themoon, for use in their houses.

    Page 10

  • Now, little Ogg was sitting by the fire one day inTonys crottage waiting for Tony to put the newblock of frozen electricity in the electric box.

Ogg was waiting for Tony to give him back thebrown paper packaging and string so he coulduse it again. Recycling is considered veryimportant on the Moon.

While Ogg was sitting by the fire he saw thehome shopping catalogue laying on the floor. Oggpicked it up and started flicking through thepages.

Ogg was delighted as it was filled with very brightpictures of amazing things that had never seenbefore.

    Page 11

  • As Ogg was looking through the pages of thehome shopping catalogue, one picture caughtOggs attention. Ogg slowly and carefully readthe text beside the picture.

It was a skateboard. I want one of those, saidOgg. Ogg who was from the planet Blogg hadvery short legs, as did everyone from the planetBlogg.

This meant it was a very great effort for Ogg todeliver the electricity all round the Moon.

Ogg thought the idea of a piece of wood withwheels on it would be the perfect thing for him toget around on.

    Page 12

  • Ogg showed Tony the picture of the skateboardand ask if he could get him one on his next tripto the shop.

I dont see why not, said Tony looking at thepicture of the skateboard in the catalogue. Onmy next trip to Earth I will bring one back foryou.

Tony looked at the picture then at Blogg, Areyou sure you want one of these?

Ogg nodded his head as fast as he could, which isdifficult for a Blogg as they are almost all head.

Its perrrfect, said Ogg in that Bloggish way hehad of speaking.

    Page 13

  • On his next trip to Earth to pick up somecornflakes and a packet of digestive biscuits,Tony went into the home shopping store andpicked up a shiny new skateboard for Ogg.

Tony also went into the local do-it-yourself shopto buy some gray paint to paint the top of hishouse with.

The people living on the Moon have to paint theroofs of their cottages gray so they cant be seenfrom Earth.

If people saw it was not a barren desolate placeeveryone would want to come and they wouldspoil it.

    Page 14

  • When Ogg next came to Tonys crottage todeliver his parcel of frozen electricity, Tonyshowed Ogg the brand new skateboard he hadbought him.

Oggs eyes nearly popped out of his head.In fact they did pop out of his head but that isthe way Oggs eyes actually work.

Ogg was delighted, he thought it the mostwondrous thing in the world or perhaps thatshould be on the Moon.

Ogg read the instructions that simply said youstand on it and push yourself along with one foot.

Ogg knew he would soon get the hang of that ifonly he could work out which foot to use as hehad four.

    Page 15

  • Ogg jumped onto the skateboard and zoomedaround the room and he did really zoom aroundthe room.

Because of the low gravity on the Moon, Ogg wasable to get such a speed as he went across thefloor, he went up the wall, across the ceiling anddown the opposite wall.

Tony decided to gently guide Ogg through frontthe door and out of the crottage before Oggstarted to break things.

As Ogg left the crottage he was smiling from earto ear or would have been if he had any ears.

    Page 16

  • Ogg went off on his new skateboard as happy asan Ogg can be.

He could deliver his boxes of electricity mucheasier now.

He could already see himself zooming around themoon on his skateboard, delivering his boxes ofelectricity.

He would become the fastest Ogg there had everbeen. He might even get a mention in the MoonTimes or even the inter planet Blogg Blogg.

He would be a hero on the planet Blogg.

It was funny that no one on planet Blogg hadinvented the skateboard, in fact they had noteven invented the wheel.

    Page 17

  • Over the next few days and following weeks Oggwould be seen on his skateboard zooming abouteverywhere.

Ogg became very good at skateboarding andcould almost make it fly.

If there was anywhere that could have beendesigned just for skateboarding it was the Moon.

Ogg would whizz around a crater, up one side, around the rim, across to the other side, then doa twirl on the edge before zooming along thesurface of the Moon to the next crater.

He was a wonder to watch.

    Page 18

  • After a few weeks however the people on theMoon who knew Ogg and those he deliveredfrozen electricity to began to notice a change inOgg.

This became a topic for gossip at the Moon PostOffice where Mrs Letterfly said people thoughtOgg was getting ill.

Lots of people had commented on it. Ogg was nolonger that lovely colour of green, he was goingquite gray, if not slightly pink.

    It was all very strange.

Ogg was not his normal jolly self, he was lookingvery sad and wobbly.

    Page 19

  • None of Tonys friends on the Moon knewanything about the kind of illness someone fromthe planet Blogg might get.

One thing was very clear however, whatever itwas, Ogg had got it.

All the people at the Post Office decided that Oggshould see the local Moon doctor.

Ogg did not like seeing doctors but Tony insistedand wheeled him along on his skateboard to seeDr Strange.

Everybody loved Dr Strange. Dr Strange kneweverything about anything and sometimes evensurprised himself by knowing things even he didnot know he knew.

    Page 20

  • Dr strange looked at little Ogg and little Ogglooked at Dr Strange.

Dr Strange felt for Oggs pulse in one of his legs. There wasnt one.

This was a good as Bloggs dont have a pulse justa slight wobble.

Dr Strange then listened with his stethoscope tothe top of Oggs head to see if he could hear theticking of Ogg brain. The ticking was very faint.

That was not good. Dr strange then hit one ofOggs knees with a small rubber hammer. Oggfell off the stool.

Dr Strange scratched his head, Most strange, hesaid, most strange.

    Page 21

  • Dr Strange then ask Ogg what he had been doingrecently.

Ogg told him he had not been doing anythingmuch different, just delivering his boxes ofelectricity as he had been doing for a long time, only on his new skateboard.

Doctor Strange looked at Ogg very hard. Whatmay I ask, said Dr Strange, is a skateboard?

Ogg told him all about the skateboard and howhe could get about much faster on it.

Ah ha, said Dr Strange. He spun around on hisswivel chair and selected a book from thebookshelf behind him. It was a medical bookabout Bloggs.

I am afraid that is the problem, said the doctorafter reading some of the book, the skateboard.

    Page 22

  • With a note from the doctor Tony took Ogg homeand tucked him up in the spare bed.

Dr Strange had said that Ogg would have to lievery still for at least two days.

You see Bloggs have very short legs for a goodreason, being very jelly like and very wobbly, they are not the kind of beings that can travelvery fast.

If they move too quickly their insides get mixedup, they get dizzy and sick and if they dont slowdown their body stops working altogether.

Luckily Ogg had not been moving about very veryfast or it could have been a very serious illness.

    Page 23

  • After a few days rest and plenty of Tonys chickensoup, Ogg recovered and was his old self again.

Ogg decided that perhaps things are the waythey are for a good reason and that he should notmove around so fast any more.

Ogg decided going slow had its advantagesanyway. It gave him time to talk to the Breakerbirds who had always ran away from him whenhe was on his skateboard.

Ogg liked the Breaker birds but thought theywere very strange.

What was really strange is that the Breaker birdsliked Ogg but thought it was Ogg who was verystrange.

    Now that is strange.

    Page 24

  • If you look out on a dark starry night and yousee a large moon rising slowly up into the nightsky.

Think of the little cottage in a crater just to theupper left, where Tony will be putting down thebook he is reading and going over to the windowto look out.

He will give a big wave to the earth then slowlygo off to bed.

If you see the moon dont forget to give Tony abig wave back.

    End

  • Secondly or possibly primarily, somewhere for my little cartoon characters to live. I have been adraftsman for many years and during idle moments and in meetings, especially in meetings, littlecharacters get doodled. These characters seem to take on a little life of their own and hang aroundin the mind until they eventually find a home in a story. They then seem to go away until the nextone comes along. These books and the original web site is somewhere to share these little cartooncharacters with. If they give anybody a little enjoyment then I am well pleased.

These original picture books are free to download, keep, copy, print and use quite freely withoutany restriction. Tony J Moon
