Terry still has Octie of course, you cannot go to bed without anybody, can you. Also Octie is very useful for swinging downat your little brother on the bottom bunkwhen you want him to shut up.

Every night after Little Tim has been tuckedup in bed, Terry will start his bounce to bedtime.

He will start by bouncing upstairs, then hewill bounce into the bathroom to clean histeeth, bounce into his pajamas, thenbounce up to his top bunk and bounce intobed.

Terry Turnvale has a bunk bed. Terry sleeps on the top bed of the bunkbed and Terry thinks his bunk bed is just magic.

Terry has small brother called Little Tim. Little Tim sleeps on the bottom ofthe bunk bed and he is definitely not magic.

Little Tim is not grown up yet, he is only four and still sleep with teddy, monkey, spiky and foggy. This all makes for a very full bed.

Terry on the other hand is very grown up, he is eight and a half and does notneed all these toys to go to bed with.

Well one day, Terry Turnvale was feeling very bouncy and bounced onebounce too much. The last bounce into his bed was bigger and higher than hehad ever bounced before.

  • Page 2

Today he found himself falling, falling, falling into, well Terry did not know what.He was falling into amagnolia coloured mist, the colour of the bedroomwall.

Terry could not see anything but he knew he wasfalling down, falling very slowly. Gradually Terry foundhe could make out some shapes, as the shapes gotcloser Terry could see they were magnolia flowers. The flowers began drifting past in ones and twos, thenthere were more as he fell further and further downuntil the sky was full of magnolia flowers.

Without any warning Terry landed quite softly on theground, a ground covered as far as you could see inmagnolia blossom.

Terry bounced into bed grabbingOctie as usual, but this time Terryover bounced and bounced right outof the bed again, right out and overthe side.

Not the side where the bedroom was, with Little Tim on the bottom bunk, but the other side where the bedroomwall should have been.

When Terry had over bounced beforehe had just hit the wall and landedback in bed.

"I wonder where I am." saidTerry to himself.

Terry had got to talk to himselfbecause there was no one elseabout.

Terry looked around, every thing was magnolia coloured, magnolia ground, magnolia sky, magnolia trees, round fluffy pink bird!.

  • Page 3

Round fluffy pink bird, that was not there a minute ago thought Terry. Thebird started to walk toward Terry. The bird got closer. The bird who had beenlooking at the ground all the time looked up and saw Terry.

"Ooooooooooo" said the bird. "Who are you."" I'm Terry." said Terry."Oooooooo." said the bird. " What's a Terry."" Where are we." asked Terry."Oooooooo." said the bird and walked round Terry eyeing him up and down."Ooooooo." said the bird. "You are a strange thing."

This was good coming from a round pink bird with a trumpet for a beak, longlegs and the silliest stubby wings you could imagine.

"Where are we" ask Terry again."Oooooooo you are a silly thing." said the bird. "We are here of coarse."

The bird bent down with his long beak and nibbled at one of the magnolialeaves. It then looked up again rather surprised.

"Ooooooo you still here. Can't stop here talking to you all day." said the bird."I have got go." with that the bird started to walk off.

"Wait." shouted Terry getting up and chasingafter the bird. "Where are you going, whereare we."

The bird stopped and turned around to look atTerry.

"Ooooooo." said he bird. "You do ask allot ofquestions. Well I'm going to sing at the placeall Doobries sing, the singing place. As toyour other question that is far too difficult forme, you'll have to ask the Wise Old Doobrie."

"Where do I find him." ask Terry.

"Ooooooo he'll be singing of course, we will allbe singing." said the Doobrie. " Just followme."

The Doobrie bird turned and started to wander off again. Terry justfollowed, followed to where ever the bird was going. There was no path orany signs, no indication they were going anywhere special, just wanderingthrough the magnolia blossom.

  • Page 4

Then out of no where Doobrie birds were appearing all over the place and allgreeting each other with a long "Oooooooo". It was beginning to get quitedeafening. Now there were Doobrie birds as far as the eye could see, alldifferent shades of pink, purple, orange and yellow.

Slowly the "Oooos" began to die down as the birds began to shuffle around toface the same direction. They were all facing a large wooden platform built inone of the magnolia trees. It all went very quiet as if the birds were waitingfor someone to appear.

Then over the silence from the back ofthe crowd, and from totally the oppositedirection of where all the Doobries werelooking, there was a shout.

    "Yoooo Hoooo I'm over here."

There was great confusion and alot of"Oooooooooos" as all the Doobries tried toturn round to face the direction of birdwho had called out.

The bird who had shouted was biggerthan the rest and was a deep shade ofblue with pink wing tips.

As the Doobries saw who it was littlebursts of Hooo Hooo Hooo ran round thecrowd.

This it seemed was a Doobrie type ofpractical joke.

When all the birds had shuffled around to face the big bird, it all wentquiet again. The big Doobrie then raised both of his short wings then let outa long cry. "Dooooooooooo.". As the dooo began to fade away it wasanswered by the crowd who all went "Doooo" then the big bird went "DoooBe dooo be dooo be." and the crowd responded. "Dooo Be dooo be dooo be."Then the Big Doobrie went. " Dee be dee be dee bee."

After quite a bit of wondering this way and that, suddenly there was another Doobrie bird. Thisone was yellow. When the two bird saw eachother the each gave a long "Oooooooo".

  • Page 5

As all this calling got under way a small group of Doobries just behindTerry broke away and started a round of "Ooo bee ooo bee" ing. Differentgroups started other rhythms turning up the pace of the singing.

Gradually the tempo got faster and faster the birds started dancing roundand round. It was like a magic painting all the colours of the different birdsswirling round forming new patterns all the time. Terry found himself drawninto the into rhythm of colour and singing, he started to dance and sing.

"Dooo be do be dooo bee, Oooo Ooo Doo." sang Terry.

Terry completely forgot where he was as he danced and danced, round andround. Terry started to sang. "Dooo be do be dooo bee, Oooo Ooo Doo." Terryspun round and round.

"Doo be doobe Yarrr Yarrr Feee beee Feee be Dy Do Tun be Tum be Tum TumTum." he shouted

Gradually the Doobrie birds who were dancing round Terry stopped.

Terry kept on dancing untilhe realised all the Doobriesaround him who could hearhim singing were looking athim. The rest of the Doobriesin he distance were stilldancing and singing.

    Terry stopped dancing andsinging

"What's the mater." saidTerry to one of the Doobries.

"You're singing the wrong words." said the Doobrie." You mustn't do that it isone of our most important national songs."

"I'm sorry." said Terry. "I didn't know I only came here to see the wise oldDoobrie.""We had better take you to him before you upset every one here with yoursinging." said the Doobrie.

The Doobrie who had spoken picked up a magnolia leaf in his beak and heldit high in the air, "Follow me", he mumbled through the magnolia leaf.

Terry followed the magnolia leaf through the mass of dancing Doobries. Finally Terry and the Doobrie with the magnolia leaf reached the edge of thecrowd. Here they found the Wise Old Doobrie, the one who had started thesinging.

  • Page 6

"Meeee mrrrr mrrr meeee mrrr mee mrr" said the Doobrie who Terry hadbeen following. The Doobrie then dropped the magnolia leaf from his beak."I've brought some one to see you Wise Old Doobrie." it said.

"Oooooooo." said the Wise Old Doobrie and walked all the way round Terrylooking him up and down. "Oooooooo." he said again. " I suppose you wantto go home" said the Doobrie continuing to walk round Terry. "They all do yousee, they all do and its a long way, a very long way. You'll need porters andguides and freshly made pies.""Tooters and scooters and peperment frouties." added the Doobrie terry hadfollowed."Taps and maps and faraway hats." said another.

Terry wanted to ask the Wise Old Doobriewhere he was and how he had got here and a lot ofother things, but the Doobrie was deep in thoughtand going "Oooooo" rather allot.

"You can help us with a very tricky problem." saidthe Wise Old Doobrie at length. "Follow."

The Wise Old Doobrie marched off followed byseveral other Doobries all in a line. Terry taggedonto the end of the line and followed.

They moved away from the singing and eventuallyarrived at the edge of a small lake. All the Doobriesbegan looking very troubled and seemed to be upsetby the water.

"Here." said the Wise Old Doobrie. "Is our problem."he waved a wing at the lake, a small blue featherdrifted down and gently landed near the edge of thewater.

"She arrived like you."explained the Wise OldDoobrie. "But she ran awayfrom the dance to sit on thathill and start to cry, she hasbeen crying ever since. Thelake surrounding her wasformed by her tears and wecan not go near it."

Terry could not see what the problem was, it was just a small lake. Then theWise Old Doobrie pointed to a small island in the middle of the lake whereTerry could see there was a small girl sitting crying.

  • Page 7

"It is only water." said Terry moving over to put his hand in it."Oooooooooo."shouted all the Doobries and stopped him.

" It is death to touch the water." the Wise Old Doobrie explained." He pickedup a feather and dropped it into the pool.

As soon as the feather touched the surface of the water it turned black andfell into dust. "You see the water is sad." explained the Doobrie.

"Everything here is kept alive by being happy, if the little girl keeps on cryingshe will destroy everything. She is crying because she wants to go home andwe can not help her because she is crying." The Wise Old Doobrie gave a longsad Ooooooo. " If we could get the Hankie of Happiness to her it would dryher tears and we could show her the way home"

Terry walked round the edge of the lake. There was no way to get across tothe island."This is like one of those problems we get in the Boy Scouts." said Terry."Where you to have to get to the island without touching the water. Only inthe Scouts they let you have three barrels two planks of wood and alot ofrope."" You mean like those." said the Wise Old Doobrie pointing his beak at threebarrels two planks of wood and alot of rope.Terry looked amazed, they had not been there a moment ago. Terry did notwaste any time, he tied the planks to the barrels and made a good raft. Hepushed the raft into the water.

"Will not the barrels die." ask the Doobries.

Terry explained that barrels would not die as they were never happy, theywere always complaining about being filled with things, but they were notsad either they were dozey sort of things.

  • Page 8

"My names Terry." said Terry. "I fell out of my bed and landed here, it seemsto be the land where the Doobries sing"

"I'm Feneela." said the girl. "I fell here out of my bed as well." she dabbedher eyes with the handkerchief " But I don't know how to get home again."

"The Doobries said they would show us the way home." said Terry. "If youcome back with me on the raft we can start right away."

Terry and Feneela got on the raft and floated back to the shore where all theDoobries greeted them excitedly with alot of "Ooooooo's".

Wise Old Doobrie gave Terry theHankie of Happiness. Terry put thehankie in his pocket quickly floatedacross the water to the island with thegirl on it. Terry handed her the Hankie ofHappiness and she wiped her eyes.

The Hankie of Happiness worked well forwith in moments the girls eyes weresparkling and she had a big smile.

"Thank you very much." she said. "Butwho are you and what are you doinghere." ask the girl.

As Terry and Feneela stepped onto the shore there was a large slurpingsound from behind them. When they looked round they saw the barrels haddrunk all the water from the lake, then suddenly the barrels were gone.

  • Page 9

The Wise Old Doobrie gave couple off "Oooo Ooooo's" and the smallerDoobries started to busy themselves all around collecting magnolia blossom. They put it into cardboard boxes then balanced the boxes on there heads. After each had gathered a box of magnolia blossom, they formed a linebehind the Wise Old Doobrie.

"Are you ready." said Wise Old Doobrie to Terry and Feneela. "For the journeyback home.""We are more than ready" shouted Terry and Feneela together.

With the Wise Old Doobrie leading the way they all marched off. Theywent up hills and down dales, they went up ups. and down downs. They evenwent down ups and up downs, which was all very strange.

After they had been walking a very long time they stopped as they cametowards a large wide gray desert. Here the magnolia blossom which hadcovered the ground all the way, suddenly stopped.Ahead lay a flat gray plain dotted here and there with mushroom like plants.

"This is the land of coconut tarts" said the small Doobrie who had been justin front of Terry and Feneela. "You can see why we brought our ownsupplies." he said and offered Terry a magnolia leaf."I think I'd prefer a coconut tart." said Terry." They do not taste very nice ." said the Doobrie." Magnolia leaves are muchnicer." he offered Terry another one. After a short break for magnolia leaves they set out across the coconut tartdesert. As they passed near one of the mushroom like plants Terry could seeit was indeed a coconut tart growing on a long stalk, Terry grabbed a bigpeace and broke it off.

  • Page 10

The coconut tart looked good so Terry broke off a peace off, he washungry so he took a big bite. With a cry of "Errrraaahh" Terry spat out the mouth full of tart. "They arehorrible." Terry declared. "That is not how I remember coconut tart tasting."

"I told you they did not taste nice." said the little Doobrie." I think it hassomething to do with what they are growing on."" What are they growing on." ask Terry looking down at the ground whichseemed to be some kind of woolly substance.

"Odd socks." said the Doobrie." If you have ever wondered where the othersock goes when you can only find one of a pair, well it eventually finds itsway here."Terry looked around, as far as the eye could see in the gray desert stretchedout in all directions, made up entirely of odd socks.

As suddenly as it started the coconut tart desert stopped where a grassymeadow started.

The Doobries all ran onto the grass gathering round a solitary tree standinga little way into the meadow. The tree had little bells on it that tinkled inthe breeze. Terry and Feneela thought the tree was very beautiful.

The Doobries sat round the tree and started munching on there magnolialeaves. The Wise Old Doobrie came over to Terry and Feneela.

"This is the tree at the end of the world." he said "This is as far as we cantake you, from here on you must find your own way but it is not difficult."he looked across the meadow. "Simply go straight on from here, turn left byyour dreams and right at the first sign of hope."

"Why can you not takeus all the way." saidFeneela.

"It is too close to yourworld." said the bigDoobrie. "There is fear, anger and heartache,we can only live in aword of completehappiness, but followmy instructions andyou will be safe."

  • Page 11

All the pictures on the washing line seemed to be old dreams.

"It must be where they put dreams out to dry before putting them away."said Feneela."That's what the Wise Old Doobrie meant." said Terry." Left at your dreams."Terry and Feneela turned to their left and followed the path.

After walking down the brick path for a while they came across a signpointing to a track on one side. 'Fresh cream cakes and lemonade' it read.

"I could just eat a cream cake." said Terry."The Wise Old Doobrie said nothing about creamcakes." said Feneela."But I'm hungry." said Terry."So were Hansel and Gretel." said Feneela."Look what happened to them when they wentto the ginger bread house."

"It does seem a bit suspicious." said Terry." TheWise Old Doobrie did say something about lostones trying to stop us."

Terry and Feneela waved good bye to the Doobries and set off acrossthe meadow following a very small track winding its way across the grass.

" Beware the lost ones." shouted the Wise Old Doobrie just before they wereout of ear shot. "They will try and stop you."

Terry thought he should go back and ask about the lost ones but when heturned round the Doobries were gone. The tree at the end of the world wasgone, there was just the meadow.

"It looks like we do not have any choice but to go on." said Feneela.

After a while they came across a footpath made of bricks, this ran both to theleft and to the right as far as you could see. On the other side of the footpathwas a long washing line and hanging from the line were clothes. When Terryand Feneela walked across the path they saw that each peace of washing hada picture on it.

Suddenly Feneela gave a startled cry. "Ahhhhhhaaaa" she cried. "That's myAunty." she said. "I was dreaming about her the other night."

"That's funny" said Terry "Here's our dog I was dreaming about."

  • Page 12

Terry and Feneela kept walking, trying not to take any notice of thesigns. There were so many, it washard not to read any of them. Theywere getting tired and just about togive up and go for the free pizza, when they saw just ahead of them, the sign they had been looking for,the first sign of hope.

Compared with all the other signs itwas quite small, with just the oneword on it, 'HOPE'.

Terry and Feneela turned to the right down the path that was just in front ofthe sign. 'Turn right at the first sign of hope', just as the Wise Old Doobriehad instructed. On the small path they now followed there were no moresigns.

The green meadow slowly gave way to a gray emptiness, the sky becamegray, the ground became gray, the distance became a gray mist. Feneela heldTerry's hand and they drew closer together as it grew darker and darker. Theyseemed to be waking in emptiness.

Terry thought he caught sight of a shadow in the corner of his eye, but whenhe turned to look, there was nothing. They heard whispers, 'You'll never getback' they said. It was all very frightening.

They carried on walking along the path and as they did so they came uponeven more signs. The signs pointed to every nice thing you could imagine, the chocolate factory. play world, free pizzas. It became very clear someonewas trying to get them to leave the footpath.

"The lost ones." whispered Feneela quietly in case any one else was listening.

  • Page 13

Just as they were thinking it was not worth walking any further they saw notvery far away something that looked like a bunk bed. Terry and Feneelawalked toward the object and as they got closer Terry shouted."That's my bunk bed, that's Octie on the top bed."Feneela also looked in disbelief"And that's my bed on the bottom, I can see Daisy Mazey, my doll waiting forme."

The two of them started to run towardsthe bed. Suddenly they stopped as athick black shadow ran in front of them.

"You wont get back" whispered theshadow.

Suddenly in the moment the shadowpassed there two beds, it flew pastagain laughing. Now there were fourbeds.

The shadow swirled round and round like a whorl wind, and each time itpassed the numbers of beds doubled the numbers were increasing all thetime. Now in front of them there were dozens and dozens of beds and theyall looked the same.

  • Page 14

"Choose the wrong one and you'll never get back" laughed the shadow.

Feneela started to cry. "I don't know which is my bed any more." she cried.

Terry grabbed her hand. "I've got and idea." he said. "When I say run wehave to be quick."

Feneela stopped crying and looked at Terry.

"You see there is only one real bed and only one real Octie and one realDaisy Mazey in that bed." whispered Terry to Feneela then.

"Ready." whispered Terry. " now." "Octie." shouted Terry.

    "Daisy Mazey." shouted Feneela.

Terry was right from only one ofthe beds and not too far away, abig pair of round eyes lookedover the side of the bed, theylooked towards Terry and Octiewaved a long tentacle.

In the bottom bed of the same bunkDaisy Mazey sat up and waved toFeneela.

    "Now." shouted Terry. "Now.

    Run.. run.. run.."

  • Page 15

Holding hands Terry and Feneela ran towards the bed as fast as their legscould carry them, as they ran they heard the shadow shouting getting closerbehind them.

They both jumped the last short distance t into the bed, Terry into the topbunk, Feneela into the bottom.

Terry closed his eyes and grabbed Octie. It was all very quiet.

After a few moments Terry dared to open his eyes, it was very dark. Then hecould just make out the shape of the bedroom window. Terry felt for thesmall torch he kept under his pillow. He switched it on and shone it aroundthe room. He was back in his bedroom, he shone the torch into the bottombunk, little Tim was there, fast a sleep. Terry lay back in his bed he reallywas back home and safe, he hugged Octie.

Terry suddenly sat up in his bed, he just had a thought, he looked at Octiestraight into those big round eyes.

"Perhaps it had all been a dream." he said holding Octie at arms length.

Octie looked back at Terry andwinked one of his big round eyes.Octie then lifted up one of his longarms to show Terry.

Clutched tightly in the end of Octiesarm, was a large, very beautifulmagnolia flower.

At the other side of town Feneela wascrying but crying with joy as she sat upin her bed hugging and hugging DaisyMazey.

O it was just a dream said Feneela, hugging Daisy tighter.

Daisy Mazey gently picked a magnoliapetal form Feneelas hair and with asmile quietly dropped it behind the bed.

What neither of them knew was thatthere paths would cross again one day.

About these booksThis series of books was designed with two functions in mind :-

Firstly as a reading resource for primary education at schools and for privatetuition. They are graded from simple picture books to full text short stories. The layout is simple and designed to be fun and downloaded so they maybe used without being connected to the internet.

The layout and text is designed for easy reading on computer screens.Instructors and parents can be assured there is nothing in these booksthat not suitable for young children.

Secondly or possibly primarily, somewhere formy little cartoon characters to live. I have beena draftsman for many years and during idlemoments and in meetings, especially inmeetings, little characters get doodled. Thesecharacters seem to take on a little life of theirown and hang around in the mind until theyeventually find a home in a story. They thenseem to go away until the next one comesalong. These books and the original web site issomewhere to share these little cartooncharacters with. If they give anybody a littleenjoyment then I am well pleased.

These original picture books are free todownload, keep, copy, print and use quite freelywithout any restriction. Tony J Moon
