hello and welcome to the bso!

The BSO offers a wide range of Education and Community Engagement programming designed to connect community members from across ages and backgrounds to orchestral music and the BSO. It is our desire to build opportunities for you and those you know to begin or deepen your relationship with orchestral music in a meaningful way; we have created our programs with the intent of building a path of engagement throughout an individual's lifespan. Our department is grateful to work with the musicians of the Boston Symphony Orchestra as partners in these efforts. Their direct participation in our Education and Community Engagement programs allows for important personal connections to be made between the stage and the community.

We invite you to explore our program offerings for the 2014-2015 season and to be in touch with us regarding any questions you might have. To help you search for program offerings that best fit your needs, we have divided our current Education and Community Engagement programs into the following constituent categories:

Children and Families (pg. 3) Schools and Educators (pg. 6) Community (pg. 12) Young Musicians (pg. 15)

Also included are our additional program offerings at the BSO's summer home at Tanglewood (pg. 16) and the BSOs Adult Education (pg. 18) programs led by our Marketing Department.

We are always exploring the best ways to better understand and meet the diverse needs of our community, and we seek to offer programs that match the BSOs unique resources with those needs. In 2014-2015, we look forward to introducing two new programs designed for our active community: the Collegiate Ambassadors program (pg. 13) and the Onstage at Symphony program (pg. 14).

To keep you informed about our offerings throughout the year, we offer a monthly e-newsletter designed to share photos, participant feedback, and updates related to our department’s programs and activities. If you wish to receive the newsletter, please email [email protected] with your request to join the mailing list.

We hope that the Education and Community Engagement programs listed in this brochure will help to open the BSO door to you in a personal way, whether you are someone who is new to our programs or a long-time friend. We look forward to seeing you and yours throughout the season.

Sincerely, BSO Education and Community Engagement Staff

Days in the Arts at Tanglewood (DARTS)The Days in the Arts (DARTS) program is a summer residential program near Tanglewood that provides middle school students with a high-quality arts immersion experience, allowing each student to engage with and create art with their peers in a positive, non-judgmental environment. The program unites students from urban, suburban and rural communities, seeking to break down barriers and stereotypes by creating a community of mutual respect and understanding. The DARTS philosophy is founded on fostering respect for and interest in each person’s diversity, interests, talents, and individuality. DARTS strives to provide an environment in which students are exposed to the arts and to people from a wide range of backgrounds.

Each summer since 1968 in the Berkshires of Massachusetts, the BSO operates the Days in the Arts residential education program that invites middle school students from across Massachusetts to gather together to explore the arts. DARTS offers students the opportunity to spend five of their summer days immersed in the arts, engaged in intensive arts workshops and to experience a variety of partner cultural organizations throughout the Berkshires.

DARTS serves 400 middle students each summer during eight one-week sessions. Arts workshops are offered in Instrumental Music, Vocal Music, Theatre, Dance and Visual Art and are taught by experienced arts educators who are also professionals in their own field. Each session convenes students from urban, suburban and rural communities with the intent to create a single community through the arts. While there is a fee attached to the experience, need-based financial assistance is available for families; no student is turned away from DARTS due to an inability to pay.

The 2015 DARTS season will take place from June 22- August 14, 2015. Rising 6th, 7th and 8th gradestudents from across Massachusetts are eligible. For more information regarding the DARTS applicationprocess, visit: www.bso.org/darts.

BSO Classroom Connections ProgramThe BSO Classroom Connections Program provides elementary school students with high quality musical performances that offer participating students the opportunity to engage with a range of BSO musicians who the students see onstage during a BSO Youth Concert at Symphony Hall. Taking the form of ensemble performances in informal settings for small groups, the BSO Classroom Connections program creates meaningful interactive experiences for students and musicians that will cultivate students’ knowledge and relationship with orchestral music and BSO players.

The BSO Classroom Connections program is available by application to elementary school classrooms to serve as an additional resource for music specialists and general classroom teachers in their efforts to incorporate orchestral music into their schools. The BSO Classroom Connections program partners with up to ten elementary school classrooms each season between January and May to present a free ensemble chamber performance in support of the current curriculum. Performances will be offered to schools who are committed to attending the 2015 Youth Concerts at Symphony Hall, and will offer either a concert preparation or extension opportunity for schools, based on the full orchestra concert experience.

Symposium Series for Music EducatorsThe Symposium Series for Music Educators serves as a resource for music educators from around the Greater Boston Area, offering the opportunity to learn instrumental methods and techniques from BSO musicians in a focused workshop setting. The series provides two free opportunities each year for teachers and BSO musicians to interact directly in a learning atmosphere of mutual respect and professionalism, affording BSO players the opportunity to serve as a direct resource for the advancement of quality music education in New England schools, and building an informal network of support and collaboration among area teachers from a wide variety of districts and backgrounds.

The Symposium Series has been designed to put music educators in direct connection with BSO musicians, allowing BSO players to “unlock the secrets” of aspects of their instruments or musical technique for their music educator attendees. Sessions often include information regarding hints and tricks of their instrument family for younger players as well as pedagogical practices and learnings and perspectives from the point of view of a professional musician. Sessions are also designed with the intent of bringing music educators from various backgrounds together in a supportive and interactive setting at Symphony Hall, allowing them to connect with each other and to build their ownership of the “behind the scenes” experience of the BSO.

Community Chamber ConcertsBSO Community Chamber Concerts provide high-quality, relevant and engaging free chamber music concerts performed by BSO musicians in greater Boston area communities limited in access to the BSO by distance or economics. Community Chamber Concerts build personal connections to the BSO and orchestral music, allowing community members to become more deeply engaged with the BSO over time. Each concert program lasts approximately one hour and is followed by a coffee and dessert reception for the audience and musicians.

The 2014-2015 Community Chamber Concert season will include an “artistic exchange” element before four of the ten total Community Chamber Concert performances. These four communities are: Lowell, East Boston, Roxbury, and Quincy. At each of these four locations, an ensemble of community musicians will be featured in performance from 2:30-2:45, prior to the BSO musicians’ 3 pm performance. This is the third year of this expanded effort which is intended to allow the concert afternoon to represent an “exchange” of performances between the BSO and the community, and to highlight the musical strengths and programs of each community.

Symphony for Our City ProgramThe BSO’s Symphony for Our City program allows the BSO to provide in-depth musical experiences across BSO performance types for local non-profit organizations. This program allows the BSO to build deeper relationships with representatives from a variety of organizations across the greater Boston area, bringing together individuals of various backgrounds, and informing the BSO’s work through reciprocal relationships. Each year, the BSO will partner with up to ten community-based organizations in the greater Boston area through an open application process. Chosen nonprofit partners will engage with the BSO throughout the year by attending one each of three types of performances:

• BSO Concert (Fall)• Boston Pops Concert (Spring) • Tanglewood Concert (Summer)

Participants will be asked to attend either a pre- or post-concert educational activity around each designated performance. These activities will be designed to build further engagement with the art form, and to foster an affinity amongst the program constituents.

Organizations may apply to be a part of the program in the summer/early fall of 2014. Do you represent an interested nonprofit organization or know of an organization that may want to apply? Visit this page for more information, participation expectations, and to download an application form: http://www.bso.org/symphonyforourcityprogram.

Applications are due by September 26, 2014. For more information, contact [email protected].

Responsibilities focus on providing general support as needed for events and activities held at Symphony Hall or offsite; participants will be compensated at an hourly rate and with a small travel stipend (as applicable). Programs that will require support include BSO Community Chamber Concerts, BSO Youth Concerts, and Onstage at Symphony.

Those interested in participating must attend an orientation meeting at Symphony Hall on Friday, October 3 at 4:30pm. Participants must be enrolled in a Boston-area college, should be over the age of 18, and should have fIexible schedules allowing them to be available on some evenings and weekends, as well as certain daytime hours. Being able to provide your own transportation is not required but is helpful! For more information and to download an application, please visit: www.bso.org/collegiateambassadors.

In an effort to reduce barriers to access around the Symphony Hall experience, the final performance of the group will be free and open to the public. Music will be distributed to the participating musicians at least one month prior to the first rehearsal. The activities of the 2015 Onstage at Symphony program will take place at selected times from Wednesday, January 28 to Saturday, January 31.

Are you an adult (18+) amateur (non-union) musician who currently lives in Massachusetts and is interested in being a part of the Onstage at Symphony program? Visit this page for more information, participation expectations, and to download an application form: http://www.bso.org/onstageatsymphony.

Applications are due by Friday, October 17, 2014.

Onstage at SymphonyNew in the 14-15 season, The BSO’s Onstage at Symphony program convenes amateur musicians of all backgrounds from across Massachusetts for a set of rehearsal and sectional experiences culminating in a performance on Symphony Hall’s stage, celebrating their talent and continued commitment to music while also providing them access to the resources of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Symphony Hall. This opportunity is intended to build long-term ownership of orchestral music and the BSO, giving community musicians an opportunity to experience a “day-in-the-life” of a professional musician under the leadership of BSO Germeshausen Youth and Family Concerts Conductor, Thomas Wilkins. Onstage at Symphony is a program designed for adult, Massachusetts amateur musicians who have a true love for musical performance but have pursued alternate career paths. Participants will be selected from a pool of applicants on a lottery basis; the BSO will select enough musicians to constitute a full orchestra fitting of selected repertoire. Chosen participants will attend two rehearsals – one on a Wednesday evening and one on a Saturday morning – and will complete their experience by performing a Saturday afternoon concert on the stage of Symphony Hall. Community musicians will also have the opportunity to work in sectional settings.
